#EndSARS: Makinde orders deployment of men of Operation Burst to various hotspots in Ibadan

The governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde has ordered Join Task Force, Operation Burst to take over hotspots in Oyo State. This was made known today via his Official handle which reads in part:

“I address you at this time to talk about some of the issues that have been thrown up by the End SARS protests in Oyo State. I have always said that peaceful protests are an important part of our democratic process, and no one should be harassed or brutalised for protesting.

“For this reason, we deployed members of Operation Burst to protect protesters. And we are happy to report that there have been no cases of disruptions of protest grounds in Oyo State since they started work.

“However, the past two days have seen a new dimension to the ongoing protests. Thugs and hoodlums have taken advantage of the situation to perpetrate uncivil acts and harass citizens who are going about their day-to-day activities. Some thugs are going as far as forcing people who have businesses open to close shop and join in the protests. We know these are criminal elements. And so, as a state, we must act to protect the citizenry.

“Therefore, we are deploying members of Operation Burst to various hotspots in Ibadan to arrest the situation and restore normalcy. The members of the team will continue to protect genuine protesters and their right to protest. But we can not allow persons with ulterior motives to hijack the protests.

“We remain committed to the process of meeting the demands of these protests. Already, as promised, the Director of Public Prosecution, Ministry of Justice, Oyo State, has withdrawn cases against End SARS protesters, and those in custody have been released.

“Also, the Oyo State Government has set up platforms for reporting past and present incidents of police brutality and injustice.

“This will naturally pave the way for the next steps in our quest to get justice for the victims. I urge the good people of Oyo State to trust the process that we have set up and rest assured that every case will be pursued to a logical conclusion.

“I have directed that all schools in Ibadan, should be closed from tomorrow, Wednesday, October 21 2020 for the rest of this week. The situation will be reviewed on Friday, October 23 2020, and then further directives will be given.

“Please call 615 should anyone attempt to disrupt your legitimate business activities.

“We will continue to seek ways to engage with peaceful protesters. Our plan is that in the shortest possible time, we can finally say the days of large-scale and wanton police brutality and injustice is a thing of the past. Let me also use this opportunity to call on members of the Nigeria Police Force to remain professional in the discharge of their duties as they will be held responsible for their actions”.

Tinubu breaks silence on #EndSARS, appeals to protesters to call off protest

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has appealed to #EndSARS protesters demonstrating against police brutality and extrajudicial killings to call off the protests and give peace a chance.

This was contained in a statement on Monday night titled; ‘#EndSARS Protests – The Remedy For National Maladies Is More, Not Less, Democracy’.

Tinubu said there is no way any society can make meaningful progress without the enthronement of these values and the demands for fundamental police reforms by the protesting youths are in pursuit of the country’s aspiration in the national anthem.

He then pleaded that the government is given the chance to implement the reforms demanded by the protesters.

The statement reads: “For the past twelve days, our country has witnessed massive protests by youths in different cities, which were ignited by widespread disenchantment with the gross human rights abuses including torture, extortion, harassment, intimidation and even extra-judicial killings of Nigerians by members of the disbanded Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS). The demands for fundamental police reforms by the protesting youths are in pursuit of our aspiration in our national anthem “to build a nation where peace and justice shall reign”. Justice as one of our greatest writers has memorably noted is “the first condition of humanity”. A society where those who are paid from the public purse to protect the lives and property of the people become themselves threats to the liberty, safety and dignity of the people; where human life is difficult to distinguish from Thomas Hobbes ‘State of Nature – ‘solitary, poor, nasty and brutish’ is not one fit for free and decent people to live in. Such impunity and lawlessness are incompatible with the values and tenets of a democratic society governed by the supremacy of the rule of law”.

#EndSARS: Lagos govt directs students to stay at home

The Lagos State Government has directed all students in public and private schools to stay at home following the tension generated by the #EndSARS protests.

A statement issued by the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, emphasised that the safety of the pupils/students, parents and all staff working in schools is paramount at this critical period, advising parents to keep an eye on their wards and prevent them from being used as tools by those who might want to hijack the protests to unleash mayhem on the society.

Mrs. Adefisayo also encouraged schools to utilise other means of distance teaching and learning such as radio, television and online media similar to the practice during the closure occasioned by the COVID-19 lockdown.

The Commissioner said that a new date for resumption of all classes will be announced in due course.

Youth protesters are frustrated, address their demands, Obasanjo tells Buhari

The former President of Nigeria, President Olusegun Obasanjo has attributed the EndSARS Protest as an agitation that needs urgent attention from President Buhari.

Obasanjo made this statement known yesterday during his courtesy visit to Ooni of Ife, Oba Ogunwusi Ojaja II at his Palace in Ile-Ife.

Earlier in his speech, former President Obasanjo explained that the #EndSARS protest is a product of an extensive agitation of the Nigerian youths that needed to be attended to by the government.

“Over 65 percent of our population are under the age of 35 who look up to the best in life who struggle for education, some of them didn’t even get educated while those who are educated get frustrated because of lack of opportunities. We must realize that the lid on the boiling steam would have to be removed.

“But I believe that there are windows of opportunity which the government can explore to show that it cares about the people, especially the youths welfare as the father of the country particularly as the father of the youths.

“Fortunately by experience, the president has children and he knows how youths behave. I believe that the opportunities can still be taken to let the youths know that he as a father understands their plight and his government understands their plight and he is ready to make life better for them.” Chief Obasanjo said.

On the attack on Governor Gboyega Oyetola’s convoy by some suspected political thugs at the venue of an #EndSARS protest in Osogbo, Obasanjo joined Ooni who is the permanent Chairman of the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers, in describing the incident as unfortunate.
