Lagos Engages Recruitment Experts on Internship, Job Placement

A call has gone out to private organisations to partner with the Lagos State Government in its drive to bridge the unemployment rates in the State and also increase the chances of gainful job opportunities for job seekers.

The Honourable Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs. Yetunde Arobieke made the call on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting held at Ikeja with recruitment experts on ways to partner with the government to ensure that unemployed youths are gainfully employed in the State.

The Commissioner noted that the meeting was organised at the behest of the Lagos State Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, as one of the strategists being used by the government to solve the rate of unemployment in the State, leveraging on the expertise of recruitment agencies to achieve the collective goal of job creation and work placement as they know where the job opportunities are.

According to her, “We are looking at ways outside what the government can do to solve the unemployment issue, therefore, we need to talk to partners, to experts in the recruitment field on ways to collaborate to solve the unemployment surge and find how we can put graduates in the employment bracket”.

Arobieke explained that despite the high rate of unemployment in the country, there are still vacant positions yet to be filled due to the perception that most graduates are unemployable, adding that this could be linked to job seekers’ lack of employability skills, the mismatch between demand for labour and the ability of applicants and outdated school curricula which lack entrepreneurship and employability skills.

Maintaining that the meeting was to complement the goals of the five job registration/labour exchange centres in each division of the State, Mrs. Arobieke said it the interactive session also aimed at enhancing the graduate internship programme, employability skills training and mentorship programme organised by the State Government.

She expressed the hope that deliberation would continue to engender a professional network between the Ministry and recruitment experts until the margin between the employed and unemployed is drastically bridged.

While highlighting the efforts by the present administration towards addressing the plight of the unemployed in Lagos, the Commissioner commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his commitment and support in ensuring that unemployed youths are gainfully engaged for sustainable livelihood, which was underscored by the recent approval of 2,000 job seekers for internship programmes at corporate organisations where the government will be paying their allowances for six months.

The stakeholders’ meeting with the theme “Partnering for Success, Adapting Internship and Job Placement Practices for Post COVID-19 Reality” later went into plenary sessions moderated by Mrs. Titi Akisanya, a leading recruitment consultant/expert.

South-West Govt, FG set for a showdown on Amotekun mode of operations

The Amotekun Corps launched by the South-West states, through the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria Commission has come with a new dimension of disagreement between the South West States and Federal Government as Buhari through his Spokesman, Garba Sheu just revealed while answering to questions on Daily Sunrise Channels TV programme that the Federal Government will not allow the operations of Amotekun to be solely controlled by the South-West States without proper guidelines from the Inspector General of Police before the security initiative finally kick-started for operations.

Garba Sheu while speaking said, Amotekun, will now be run in accordance with the structure defined by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, further said that the structure of the security network would be as prescribed by the IG.

“Whatever name they go by, Amotekun or whatever, will be streamlined and they will be run in accordance with the structure as defined by the Inspector-General of Police. They will be localised; they will be owned by the local communities. They will be managed by them,” he said.

The President’s spokesman further stated that the community policing structure would be the same across the 36 states and whatever would not conform with the national structure would not be “in the scheme of things.”

Shehu added, “You know the constitution of the committees will be defined as including council chairmen, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups and all of that.

“So, you are going to have a single type structure of community policing permitted all across the country and whatever is not in line with this does not have a place in the scheme of things. That is my understanding.”

Fani-Kayode finally tenders apology, withdraws the ‘stupid’ word used for a journalist

The former Minister of Aviation, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode who had an encounter with a journalist at a PRESS Conference in Calabar yesterday where he verbally assaulted Daily Trust journalist has finally tendered his unreserved apology to the journalist and Nigerians at large. In a statement personally signed by him today read and quoted as follows:

“I met with my advisors till late last night and I wish to say the following. I hereby withdraw the word “stupid” which I used in my encounter with a journalist in Calabar.

I have many friends in the media who I offended by losing my cool and using such words. I hereby express my regrets for doing so.

I do however wish to state categorically that no threat of physical harm was ever made to the journalist in question and neither did I send anyone to threaten him. Anyone that says otherwise is lying and I challenge them to bring the proof.

I would never seek to physically harm a journalist. For the last 30 years I have defended and worked with journalists and fought for the right of freedom of expression.

I am also very close to many in that profession. I would be the last to seek to disparage those that are honorable and noble within its ranks.

I hope that this will assuage the pain and anger of anyone that was hurt or offended by this ugly episode. I have now put this matter behind me and moved on. Now my tour of the South continues. Moving to yet another state today”.

NUJ condemns Fani-Kayode over ‘gangster-like outburst’ against a journalist

The Nigeria Union of Journalists has condemned Fani-Kayode over hos recent outburst against a journalist at the PRESS Conference held in Calabar.

In a statement signed today by the President of the organization, Chris Isiguzo, the NUJ condemns the gangster-like outburst by Chief Femi Fani Kayode against the Cross River State Correspondent of the Daily Trust Newspaper, Eyo Charles who asked him a simple question which he felt was embarrassing.
In his reaction, Kayode assaulted the journalist and threatened him for daring to ask such a question.
By denigrating the journalist, Fani Kayode has exposed himself the more as an intolerant and unstable person who will not want his activities closely scrutinised by the Media.
It is instructive to remind the likes of Fani Kayode that it is the Constitutional right of Journalists to monitor and keep a check on people and institutions in power.
By delving into politics and holding political office, Fani Kayode is very conversant
with the watchdog role of the media.
For him to have embarked on assessment of projects in some states, even though we are yet to be told under what platform, he is doing so, it is proper for the media to hold him to account for his actions and decisions.
His reaction was totally unacceptable, dishonourable and reprehensible and we demand for retraction of his untoward, irritating and awkward utterances which negate simple decorum and civility.
We are more shocked that the same Kayode who had in recent times, used his social media handles to call leaders to account is at the same time attacking a Journalist for a simple demand for him to unmask those behind his nationwide tour. He had already visited six states. This is indeed, terribly disappointing.
