According to reports, the fire outbreak was caused by an electrical spark inside one of the shops down Odi Olowo Street immediately they brought electricity as at 1:30am.
An eyewitness added that the security guards alerted the residents who tried all their best possible to quench the fire while waiting for the fire service but all to no avail.
Millions of goods and valuables were said to have destroyed by the fire.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday, 11th January, 2023 dismissed the separate appeals filed by Otunba Jimi Lawal and his group members, Taiwo Olabode Idris against the appeal court ruling that allowed Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu’s application against the judgement of the Federal High Court, Abeokuta delivered by Justice O. Oguntoyinbo on 27th September, 2022.
The Supreme Court panel of Justices led by Justice Kekere Ekun before dismissing the two appeals expressed displeasure against the actions of the appellants appealing against the decision of the Appeal court, stating that their actions were just aimed at frustrating the appeal of Hon. Adebutu at the Appeal court sitting in Ibadan despite been heard and allowed.
The interpretation of the judgement is that Hon. Adebutu Kensington is now the authentic PDP Gubernatorial candidate for Ogun State.
The Lagos State Police Command has punished officers captured in a video assaulting a lady after seizing her phone at Ilasan area of Lekki Phase 1.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the command, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this via his Twitter page while reacting to the video.
A tweep, @Austynzogs, on Tuesday shared a video of the lady being manhandled by two policemen, demanding if she had been released by the police after the altercation.
The tweep wrote in the caption,”Last week, police men guarding the palace at Ilasan, Lekki Phase 1, allegedly assaulted a lady for attempting to record them during a confrontation with a Uber driver.”
Tagging Hundeyin and the Force PRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, to the tweet,the tweep asked, “The lady’s phone was seized and she was also arrested. Has she been freed?”
Responding to the tweet, Hundeyin noted that the Ilasan Divisional Police Officer intervened in the case and ensured the lady retrieved her phone.
He also stated that the officers involved had been subjected to disciplinary actions.
Hundeyin tweeted, “The DPO Ilasan waded in, ensured she got her phone back immediately, and subjected the officers to disciplinary actions.
“The lady claimed she was injured, for which the officer was mandated to offset her medical expense.
“The lady went home happy. I equally verified from her.”
Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,SAN, CON has approved the redeployment of three commissioners to various ministries in a minor cabinet reshuffle.
Those affected are the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Akinwumi Sowore; Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives Services, Hon. Lola Fagbemi; and Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Amidu Takuro.
In the minor reshuffle, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Sowore moves to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives Services, while the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Takuro moves to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
Equally, the Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives Services, Hon. Fagbemi moves to the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.
The redeployment takes immediate effect.
Governor Akeredolu said the reshuffle was informed by the need to improve service delivery and strengthen collaboration among Ministries, Departments and Agencies in government.
The Governor charged the Commissioners to continue to work in line with the Redeemed Agenda and the “One Administration” mantra of his administration.
A group of indigenes in Ibarapa area of Oyo State has condemned the recent installation of Governor Seyi Makinde as Aare Atayese of Ibarapaland.
This was contained in a statement made available today to ODUDUWA NEWS by the Secretary of the Council, Olabode Adedamola Olusoji as read in part:
“The administrative and spiritual head of Yoruba monarchy and aristocracy system are Obas who are traditionally believed to be the link between the people and the ancestor. The throne is believed to be held in trust for the ancestors. A Yoruba Oba personifies the kingdom and epitomises the reincarnation of the past ancestors of the community. Their actions are thoughts to be spiritually guided by the interests of the ancestors and thus expected to be nobble and acted in the interest of their kinsmen to avoid the wrought of the ancestors.
“The chieftaincy system in Yorubaland can be categorised into four ranks: royal chiefs, noble chiefs, religious chiefs, and common chiefs. The royal chiefs are inherited, and they assist Oba in the day-to-day administration of the kingdom while noble and common chiefs are mostly honorary conferred on people to appreciate their contributions towards a kingdom. It is also used to give people symbolic sense of belonging for continuous contributions towards collective interest of a kingdom. A Yoruba Oba leads the council of chiefs who made decisions on matters such as war, trade, taxation and ceremonial events, and while the chiefs might be powerful and influential, the Oba held the overriding authority.
“There are five socio-political regions in Oyo state: Ibadan, Ogbomoso, Oyo, Okeogun and Ibarapa zones. The Central Council of Ibarapa Indigene (CCII) observes that the current Engr Seyi Makinde led Oyo state government has concentrated in other regions while Ibarapa is marginalised. The governor himself had been to Ibarapa on more than 3 occasions with the promise to address road, electricity, water, and infrastructural deficits within the region but he has always failed. For example, a recent record from the Oyo State government indicated that over 350 km of roads have been constructed throughout the state in the last three and half years. It is disturbing that less than 2 km of this was constructed in Ibarapa region. Of all the farm settlements in Oyo state, it is only the one in Ibarapa that is not receiving attention despite over #7.6 billion assessed by the state government for agricultural development since 2019.
‘It is only in Ibarapa that we have grid-connected communities that do not have electricity for more than 8 months. Of all the five zones, it is only Ibarapa that has not had pipe-born water for up to 2 weeks since inception of this administration.
“Against the aforementioned neglects, and marginalisation by the Engr Seyi Makinde led administration, the CCII notes with shock the conferment of Aare Atayese on Engr Seyi Makinde by the Ibarapa Traditional Council. The Aare Atayese itself means “He who has rebranded, modified and make life comfortable for people”. We have reasonable reasons to believe that the traditional council either acted out of personal interests or are cajoled by the political power brokers to do so without considering feelings of their kinsmen. The farmers, market women, artisans, and professionals across Ibarapa had addressed their displeasures against the Traditional Council for the ill-conceived and purchased Aare Atayese chieftaincy title. The following as captured on the social media handle of a vibrant youth from Igangan, a community from Ibarapa region summarises various displeasures towards the conferment:
“Our chief priests have consistently lied to us,
Our kings seem to have outsmarted the oracle
And taken the people for a ride.

“The Central Council of Ibarapa Indigene therefore advises the traditional council to be guided, respect the throne, and avoid being used as political tools”.
Ogun State Judiciary Staff have been advised to be more diligent, purposeful and faithful in the discharge of their duties in the year 2023.
The Chief Judge of Ogun State, Hon. Justice (DR) Mosunmola Arinola Dipeolu, FICMC, FHNRj gave the advice at a Prayer Session organised by the Management of Ogun State Judiciary to usher in the new year on Monday, 9th January, 2023.
While appreciating the Staff and especially the Honourable Judges, the Chief Judge applauded their Lordships for their moral uprightness and incorruptibility in the discharge of their duties.
“I sincerely want to appreciate our Hon. Judges in the State for their diligence in the discharge of their duties as no one faced the National Judicial Commission panel throughout last year (2022) which shows that they are incorruptible, I implore us to continue in the good deeds” Hon. Chief Judge stated.
Hon. Justice (DR) Dipeolu thereafter encouraged and advised the staff to be more hardworking, cooperative, supportive of the system and maintain integrity in the discharge of their duties. They were further advised to be prayerful in all their endeavours in the new year. The Hon. The Chief Judge implored the staff to maintain decorum and not agigate for what is not due to them. He advised everyone to wait for his time.
Earlier, in his word of exhortation titled “A New Season of Hope”, Hon. Justice A. A Akinyemi, charged the staff to allow God to help them to shine forth through their good works, avoid all forms of evil works and wickedness to one another and to be diligent as prayer will not take the place of diligence.
“We need to improve more on ourselves for without God, nothing can happen this year, no matter how competent we are, we must allow God to build us” Hon .Justice A. A Akinyemi advised.
Also, in his exultation the Muslim Cleric, Mr. Ganiyu Oguntoyinbo charged the Staff of Ogun State Judiciary to make good deeds their priority in the new year.
Thereafter, prayers were rendered for Nigeria, Ogun State, the Hon. Chief Judge, Honourable Judges, Magistrates, Judicial Research Officers and other Members of Staff of the Ogun State Judiciary.
The Christian and Muslim prayer sessions were held simultaneously at the Judiciary Complex Abeokuta and at all other Judicial Divisions of the Ogun State Judiciary.
The Lagos Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, Abdul-Azeez Adediran aka Jandor, has claimed that the location of the Television Continental station used to be a Lagos State Polytechnic campus.
He made this known on Your View programme on the same TVC on Monday.
The governorship candidate asked if it is legal to convert a Lagos owned property to a privately-owned property.
He said, “Where we are sitting right now, this TVC premises used to be a Lagos State Polytechnic property. Even if you tidy up everything and it is so legal to sell it to yourself, is it morally right?“
The Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, on Monday, visited the burnt shasha market in Ikere Ekiti, Ikere Local Government Area, promising supports for traders, who lost their valuables to the inferno that engulfed a section of the market, on Saturday.
Oyebanji, who lamented how multi-million naira wares and other structures, had been razed down, urged traders across the state to be conscious of their actions during this dry season period to avert calamity.
A section of the market located between Ado-Ikere road, was around 4pm, on Saturday, gutted by fire, with property worth millions of naira destroyed in the evening inferno.
Visiting the market alongside members of the State Executive Council, yesterday, Oyebanji assured the Hausa and Yoruba traders that were affected of support to recover their losses.
The Governor’s delegation, led by the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, pledged that the state government will carry out some restructuring in the market, by replacing some thatch-roofed and other old structures with modern ones.
The governor added that officers and staff of the Ministry of Trade and Investment will be visiting the market to enumerate the the number of victims and take other vital information to provide proper and relevant intervention guide.
In line with the promise made to the traders during the electioneering campaign, the governor, said the road leading to the market from the Ado-Ikere-Akure road will be graded to ease transportation along the axis.
“Governor Biodun Oyebanji sympathise with you on the losses you suffered , but let us be cautious in all our dealings this time because dry season is around now.
“We thank God that no life was lost. We can still make up for those things we have lost through personal efforts and government’s intervention. But if anyone had died, it is irreversible.
“Let us be careful. We never knew the generating set that caused the incident would spark up fire. We thank God that the person who caused the arson also owned up that he was responsible for it. But government won’t punish him because it was not intentional.
“The government will surely give support for the fact our Governor wants everybody plying his trade in Ekiti to be happy and prosperous, not minding where you came from.
“We will provide roads and other facilities that will guarantee safety and good life here. I also appeal to traders to cooperate with the leadership of Traders’ Association for the maintenance of some of the facilities they provided.
“People shouldn’t resist payment of little rates to maintain them because government can’t do it alone, we need your support”.
Recounting how the incident happened, the Chairman of Traders’ Association in the market, Alhaji Adamu Abdulhameed, said the fire surged around 4pm from a generating set and spread to other adjoining shops, including a cold room and razed them down.
He said; “We tried our best to quench the fire. We were in the mosque when it started, but the fire was beyond our control.
“The severity of the fire incident wouldn’t have got to this level if we have a fire service station here that could have responded swiftly and in a better manner”.
In similar fashion, the Iyaloja of Shasha Market, Chief (Mrs) Feyisayo Ayajo, made a passionate appeal to the government to establish a Fire Service Station in the market to always respond to any arson incident timeously.
“This market is big and viable enough to a fire service station. We plead with the Governor to kindly look at this demand and act appropriately to our request. Losing our property to fire can cripple our businesses and render us economically unviable”.
President Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday attended the presidential campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Adamawa State, home of Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to rally support for his party’s candidate, Bola Tinubu.
The president presented the presidential candidate of the party, holding his right hand high on the podium and announced him as the candidate of the party while urging support of the electorate.
He also presented the party’s flag to the governorship candidate, Aishatu Binani.
The president urged the people to be wary of their environment, assuring the people of their protection.
He expressed confidence in the APC governorship candidate, pointing out that Adamawa would be producing the first elected female governor in the country.
“APC is again going to be number one. There is going to be a lady Govenor since we started this system,” he stated.
“We are going to be that one and she’s going to win God’s willing.
“I advise you to please be focused. APC came into the political scene to make sure that Nigerians are recognised as the owners of the country.
“They are nobody’s slaves, they are not anobody’s boys. They are fellow Nigerians,” the president stated.
Buhari added that, “I will like you to make sure that you work very hard in the field to do the food we need, pay your taxes, and make sure our children go to school, that our unhealthy relatives get medical care.
“That’s all we need for the common man – security, education, healthcare.”
On the forthcoming election, the president advised the people to go to their constituencies to elect credible and responsible people that would be able to deliver the needs of the people.
“Please go to your constituencies make sure you choose people that are very responsible.
“People who will keep you informed and act according and within the resources available in your locality.
“And I said education, health care are our priorities.
“Please make sure you have security in your area.
“Don’t allow fraudulent people to come and dominate your locality,” he warned
Oyo state government is to convene a meeting of the management of the Polytechnic Ibadan, governing council and the students over protest on the alleged increase in hostel refusal fee and the issues of consultant in the institution’s affairs.
The meeting which is scheduled to hold at the state’s Ministry of Education’s conference room tomorrow 10th January would address issues raised by the students. Recall, earlier today, students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan protested at the State Secretariat over the increase in amount payable for hostel refusal fee from 5000 to 15000. Addressing the hundreds of students who protested to the Agodi,Secretariat, Ibadan, the Deputy Governor, Chief Bayo Lawal said Oyo state government would look into the suspension of the Students’ Union Government by the management of the institution following the recent protest.
The Deputy Governor therefore appealed for calm from both parties involved with a promise to resolve the matter amicably. Also, the Commissioner for Education, Abiodun Abdul Raheem in an interview explained that the meeting would provide an avenue for parties to speak with a view to solving the problem.
Meanwhile, the management of The Polytechnic, Ibadan has released a statement to lift the suspension order slammed on the Students’ Union activities.
A statement from the Institution signed by the Registrar, Mrs. Modupe Theresa Fawale disclosed that the reversal of the decision was based on interventions to allow for further consultations. The Management has decided not to use the big stick on the students as they have also sheath their sword.
