Soyinka backs Obasanjo, says Nigeria has disintegrated under Buhari

The Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has said that Nigerians no longer have hope in the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government as one that is genuinely committed to the survival of the nation as one.

In a statement on Tuesday, Mr Soyinka said Nigerian citizens no longer believe that the administration understands the minimal requirements for positioning the country as “a modern, functional space of productive occupancy.”

“The nation is divided as never before, and this ripping division has taken place under the policies and conduct of none other than President Buhari – does that claim belong in the realms of speculation?” Mr Soyinka, a professor of literature wrote in the statement he titled Between ‘Dividers-in-chief’ and Dividers-in-law.

“Does anyone deny that it was this president who went to sleep while communities were consistently ravaged by cattle marauders, were raped and displaced in their thousands and turned into beggars all over the landscape? Was it a different president who, on being finally persuaded to visit a scene of carnage, had nothing more authoritative to offer than to advice the traumatised victims to learn to live peacefully with their violators?

“And what happened to the Police Chief who had defied orders from his Commander-in-Chief to relocate fully to the trouble spot – he came, saw, and bolted, leaving the ‘natives’ to their own devices. Any disciplinary action taken against ‘countryman’? Was it a spokesman for some ghost president who chortled in those early, yet controllable stages of now systematised mayhem, gleefully dismissed the mass burial of victims in Benue State as a “staged show” for international entertainment?

“Did the other half of the presidential megaphone system not follow up – or was it, precede? – with the wisdom that they, the brutalized citizenry, should learn to bow under the yoke and negotiate, since “only the living” can enjoy the dividends of legal rights?”

Mr Soyinka’s criticism came days after former President Olusegun Obasanjo warned that the country is slowly becoming a failed, divided state, and the poverty capital of the world.

In its response, the Presidency attacked Mr Obasanjo, describing him as the country’s “divider-in-chief.”

Mr Soyinka said while he is no fan of Mr Obasanjo, he agrees with him that Nigeria is “teetering on the very edge of total collapse.”

Obasanjo hails Buhari over position on Adesina’s emergence as AfDB President

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday, commended President Muhammed Buhari’s led Federal Government for the support given at ensuring successful re-election of the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina.

Obasanjo, in what appeared to be his first official reaction, since Adesina’s re-election penultimate week, also thanked some past and present African leaders for their supports during the period.

The former President made these disclosures when the leadership of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (FIBAN), led by the National President, Comr. Desmond Nwachukwu paid him a courtesy call at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Pent House residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

Obasanjo who was responding to remarks made by the FIBAN President on the support given to Adesina, added that education played a vital role in the success so far made by him and other Nigerians doing the country proud in their different endeavour.

“I must commend the Federal government for the support given to him to get this second term ticket. You know that the former President, Goodluck Jonathan recommended him before this new government came on board. The government could have rejected him. So, I must commend President Buhari for supporting him all through.

“Also, let me acknowledge and commend some of my colleagues, the 14 former Presidents in Africa for joining me immediately I drew their attention to it. Some present Presidents also deserved commendations too,” Obasanjo said.

The former President emphasized on the importance of education, noting “if Adesina had not gone to school, no matter the innate ability God might have given him, he would not have got to where he is today.

“So, the first thing is how do we get about 14m children, who are out of school now back to school. 14m children who should have been in school, undergoing education training that will make them contribute to the development of the country in the near future.

“It is having a good education, that will make them a good product to market in the global world like Adesina. Not only him, we have several like him, including the AFRISM President, Dr Oramah,” Obasanjo said, even as he observed that the country’s present image was not fairing to assist these potentials.

Obasanjo appreciated the members of the Association for the visit, moreso for the commendation on his support for the AfDB President.

The FIBAN national president had earlier disclosed that the former President’s penchant for grooming talents for leadership positions led to the emergence of Adesina, and as such, “the association is therefore using this opportunity to congratulate you on the historic re-election of Adesina.

UCH joins ongoing JOHESU strike, locks up entrance gates

Health workers at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, on Monday, joined the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Joint Health Staff Union (JOHESU).

According to the Nigerian Tribune, many essential places in the hospital have been locked Including the pharmacy, outpatient clinics, medical records sections and the two of the main gates into the hospital.

The JOHESU Chairman, UCH branch, Adeolu Alli, said the strike became necessary after Federal Government ignored them for three years without any show of concern to their demands.

He said: “We are on strike at the moment and our members have gone home. The level of compliance is almost 98 per cent. The government must meet our demands.

“On September 30, 2017, there was an agreement with the Federal Government on some of these issues most especially the adjustment of our salary structure. Three months later, that was April and May 2018, we had to go on strike again. It was as this April that they took us to court and the court referred us to the ADR of the National Industrial Court. And by December 2019, judgment was made on some of these issues. That is why I’m saying 2017 till date is three years.

“JOHESU is made up of over 94 per cent of workers in the hospitals, except doctors. Obviously there is nothing that can be done without this workforce but unfortunately, the Federal Ministry of Health has been biased all the while. We have tried our best. We have been patient enough but it is unfortunate that they are taking our patience for being a fool.”

Some of the workers who spoke with journalists said it was difficult to trust the government in the country.
UCH’s Public relations officer, Mr Toye Akinrinola, said the hospital’s management had appealed to the striking health workers to leave entrances to its emergency units, including the accident and emergency unit, Otunba Tunwase Children Emergency, the ICU, staff clinic, antenatal emergency and labour ward, opened.

He stated that during the strike, the emergency surgeries would still be attended to at the hospital.
Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Bashir Bello said health workers often resort to strike action as an avenue to reach a concrete agreement by all concerned.

He added: “It is the way of calling the attention of the government to issues that need to be addressed in the sector. So, it is not something negative.”

The spate of the deadly coronavirus pandemic surged from over three million cases in April to over twenty-six million cases in August. But while it is still increasing in some parts of the world, the infection rate, according to the figure released by authorities daily, is reducing in Nigeria.
