Fuel Hike: NLC, TUC, NANS give FG 2-week ultimatum for a reversal, threaten to shutdown economy

Organised Labour has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if the Federal Government refuses to reverse the recent increases in fuel and electricity tariff.

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Ayuba Wabba while making the announcement on Wednesday in Abuja said the NLC’s central working committee (CWC) has resolved to issue a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to reverse the increase.

He said workers and Nigerians are disappointed that the government decided to increase both the price of fuel and electricity tariff at a time “other countries across the world are giving palliatives to their citizens to cushion the effect of COVID-19.”

“NLC central committee will also mobilise its members, civic society allies, and other social partners to resist this policy because it has driven many into poverty,” Wabba added.

The two weeks ultimatum will end on September 28.

Earlier last week, the National Association of Nigerian Students NANS had also given a 2-week ultimatum to Federal Government to reverse the hike in fuel price and electricity tariff and that failure to do so, Nigerian students shall be embarking on nationwide protest after the ultimatum lapses.

OduduwaNews had earlier reported that the leader and gubernatorial aspirant of African Democratic Congress in 2019 governorship election in Oyo State, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin officially declared his defection to APC on Monday.

In the meantime, Oyo State Chairman of African Democratic Congress, Mr Adeoti Aderoju has disclosed that the party would not miss its members that recently defected to All Progressive Congress.

The erstwhile leader of ADC in Oyo State, Senator Femi Lanlehin was recently reported to have attended a reconciliation meeting called by leaders of APC in Oyo State at Abuja.
Aderoju, at a Press Conference held at Ibadan on Wednesday said the notion in some quarters that ADC Oyo State was rocked with crisis and the exit of Lanlehin and his supporters would be the end of the party was not true.

He described the defectors as insignificant adding that their decision to leave the party was out of greediness. He also made it known that defectors decision were driven by greed and nepotism.

“The erstwhile group led by Senator Femi Lanlehin has ever been on the path of disunity while their greed and nepotism were on the high side to bear for anyone, this is why the recent process of producing a governorship candidate in the last general election was aborted in order to satisfy the desperation of Senator Lanlehin.

“They are the reason for the crack in the folds of not only ADC but also other parties they have ever joined since 2011 till date, they are like refugees who consistently seek asylum in a peaceful State, what really pushes them around, we leave to the public to judge.

“We have gone through thick and thin and we have come out stronger, our platform is open to any decent and sincere politician to accept our handshake to build a virile society,” he hinted.
The party Chairman said ADC was working to change the face of politics in Oyo State by partnering with people with sincere love for the people to deliver good governance.

Aare Onakakanfo raises fresh alarm, says terrorists now occupy Kishi, Oke-Ogun

Few weeks ago, OduduwaNews had reported the statement credited to the Aare Onakakanfo where he raised alarm on the alleged infiltration of Oke-Ogun by some suspected ISIS terrorists.

Again, Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams, on Wednesday, raised fresh alarm that armed terrorists have occupied Kishi, a town North West of Oyo State, and the Old Oyo National Park.

This was contained in a statement made available by his spokesman, Mr. Kehinde Aderemi.

It read, “The reports range from ceaseless kidnapping, rape and threat to lives of Yoruba people in the Oke Ogun area with Kishi as the present hub of terrorist attacks. It is my responsibility to alert the public and also the relevant authorities.”

The statement added that the region was gradually becoming a haven for bandits and terrorists masquerading as herdsmen, warning that the situation must be nipped in the bud to prevent violence.

LASTMA pledges to address unruly conduct of officers in Lagos

The General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olajide Oduyoye, has assured the public that due diligence will be observed in the case of a female officer seen displaying professional misconduct at Aromire Junction, Ikeja on Friday, September 11, 2020, in a viral online video.

In a release by the Agency, Oduyoye disclosed that the officers in the video – Mrs. Adepeju Odunlami and her male counterpart – have been invited for investigation, just as he gave an assurance that appropriate disciplinary action will be meted out on the erring personnel as laid down in the Lagos State Civil Service rules.

According to the General Manager, a statement written by Mrs. Odunlami claimed that the driver of the black Honda vehicle, with registration number SF 885 KJA, ran the red light at Aromire junction and drove without a seat belt.

Giving a further update about the incident, Oduyoye said the lady wrote that the vehicle returned through the route on the same day but the driver and front-seat passenger still did not strap their seat belts.

“She, therefore, decided to apprehend the recalcitrant driver for the traffic infraction. This led to an altercation with the passenger biting her finger and the driver punching her head resulting in lacerations which she also said got her enraged”, the General Manager explained.

While noting that the driver of the vehicle actually committed a traffic infraction, Oduyoye said the LASTMA official should have simply documented the details of the vehicle for action by the Zonal Authority instead of allowing the issue to degenerate to the level of assault.

“The LASTMA official demonstrated poor professional judgement as a public servant, whose conduct is the focus of the public, thereby misrepresenting and casting smear on the State Government and the Agency”, Oduyoye submitted.

He reiterated that LASTMA continuously trains its staff to discharge their duties professionally and will continue to do so, urging members of the public to report all misdemeanour by any officer on Lagos roads, so that appropriate steps can be taken for a more efficient and effective service by personnel of the Agency.
