Lagos Begins Dislodging of Illegal Occupants at Lekki Foreshore

The Monitoring Team of the Lagos State Government has dislodged some illegal miners and occupiers of the proposed development site of Lekki Foreshore Scheme in a bid to stop indiscriminate evacuation and carting away of sand meant for construction purposes.

The Permanent Secretary, Lands Bureau, Mr. Bode Agoro, who led the Monitoring Team on the exercise, decried the wanton disregard and encroachment of miners and illegal occupiers of the site, assuring that the government will not fold its hands and watch squatters deface the scheme.

He reiterated that the government is determined to take drastic action against such illegal occupancy of its schemes across the metropolis.

The Acting General Manager New Towns Development Authority (NTDA), Tpl. Olakunle Aboyeji, who was also present during the exercise, expressed disbelief at the theft of the commonwealth of Lagosians by a greedy few who also attempt to discredit the government.

He lamented that the sand which the miners were carting away was designated for the development of the Lekki Foreshore Scheme to create access for allottees who intend to take possession of their land.

Aboyeji stated that the activities of the illegal squatters and miscreants, who perpetrate unlawful acts within and around the scheme, also constitute a security threat to others in the area, warning that anybody caught contravening the rules in the vicinity will face the full wrath of the law.

He explained that the monitoring exercise will be continuous in order to ensure the safety of government property on all sites across the State.

Hijrah: Makinde felicitates Muslims, urges peaceful coexistence

Oyo State governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has felicitated Muslim faithful in the state on account of the New Year Hijrah 1442 AH, which begins Friday, 21 August, 2020.

He wished Muslims in the state, Nigeria and across the world a new year filled with blessings and benevolence of the Almighty Allah.

The felicitation by Makinde came on the heels of the acceptance of Friday, August 21 as the first day of Muharram 1442 AH by the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar (CFR), following a recommendation by the National Moon Sighting Commitee of the NSCIA.

The governor said: “Hijrah (immigration to Madinah), no doubt, kindled the light of hope in the hearts of the early Muslims who set a shining example for all Muslims, in every generation, to emulate. It symbolises a new beginning.

“So, it is my prayer that all Muslims in Oyo State and the country will experience positive improvements and progress as the Hijrah 1442 AH begins.”

Governor Makinde, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, congratulated the Muslim Ummah in the state on the opportunity to witness a new Islamic year, urging them not to relent in praying for the state and the country.

The governor, who stated that Hijrah began when the Holy Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Madinah, enjoined Muslims to continue to demonstrate good neighbourliness, love and dedication to the state.

He urged them to work deliberately to ensure peaceful coexistence at all times.

According to him, the essence of Hijrah is that it is a process of transfer to a better situation, a search for an environment more favorable to continuous and constructive effort.

He noted that Muslims in the state should follow lessons taught by Prophet Muhammad following his immigration to Madinah.

“The Holy Prophet, following his immigration to Madinah, taught a lot of lessons including worship to God, brotherhood, good neighbourliness and good welfare for the people, among others. In short, the Hijrah teaches that wherever Muslims go, they should bring goodness to that land. Muslims should work for both moral and material goodness of the society.

“Therefore, I urge the Muslim Ummah in the state to continue to show their dedication to the wellness of the state, contributing their quota in different ways to its development and I assure that the administration will continue to fulfill its promise to uplift the state and and move its people from poverty to prosperity.

“I commend the Muslim Ummah for the immense contributions they continue to make to the progress of our dear state and wish them a successful and prosperous Hijrah 1442 AH.”

The leadership of NANS spoke on Wednesday evening during a courtesy visit to the Governor’s office , Alagbaka , Akure , the state capital.

The student body leadership led by its President has been in the state for three days, where they have embarked on inspection and monitoring of the Governor’s projects.

Speaking, the former Senate President of NANS, Olalekan Smart Edward said Governor Akeredolu’s projects are speaking for him within and outside the state.

He said:”Your projects are speaking for you. President Buhari has commendations for you. APC has commendations for you. Outsiders have commendations for you. And we agree that there must be consistency in development. Governor Akeredolu is doing well.”

In his remarks, the NANS President, Comrade Danielson Bamidele said the national delegation of the student body has been in the state for three days for inspection and monitoring of the Akeredolu administration projects, adding that the Governor has done creditably well.

He described the road projects executed by the Akeredolu administration as quality, stressing that that Governor has embarked on enduring projects.

The NANS President appreciated Governor Akeredolu for his interventions at the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa (OAUSTECH) which he said, has turned the school around for good.
He equally appealed to the Governor to reconsider the tuition payable in the state owned institutions in the state.

Responding, Governor Akeredolu who said students are important to his administration, disclosed that he had instructed his team to find out the tuition payable in other state owned institution so as to know what step to take on the reduction of tuition in the state.

He said:”Students are important to us. It will take all of us to sit down to have this discussion about tuition. It’s not a discussion of the deaf. All of us will be hearing. A time when you go to Abuja and take N9 Billion monthly as against when you go to Abuja now and get far less and you have to pay salary.

“Unlike somebody that decided not to pay for seven months. I met seven months salary arrears and I have paid six. So I prioritized the workers’ welfare. We shored up our IGR to spend more on infrastructure. I note what you have raised on this issue of fee.

“At my last meeting, I have said let me have where they are paying less than what we charge here. What we found out was that for those newly admitted, we still charge the lowest in tuition but for the second year and all, we have state owned institutions that charge lesser then us. And if not for this issue of Covid, we have decided to reduce it. We will reduce it.

“It’s not a matter for political gains. I know by the time we announce it they will turn it to political gains. We will make sure that by next week we make the announcement on the fee.

Lagos Considers August 20th Public Holiday For Traditionalists

Lagos State Government, on Tuesday, assured the Association of African Traditional Religion, Nigeria and Overseas (AATREN), Lagos State Chapter, that it has not jettisoned the request of the practitioners of the traditional religion for the declaration of August 20 as a public holiday in their favour.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Solomon Bonu, disclosed this when members of the Association visited his office in Alausa, Ikeja, describing the association as promoters of the indigenous cultural heritage of the State.

He pleaded with the members to allow the State Government follow due process before acceding to their request, considering the legal implications of making such a declaration without due diligence.

“You know that it is a matter of law; even the House Assembly has deliberated on this same issue which attests to the fact that the approval is not such that can be solely granted by the executive arm of the Government. It requires working together with the legislative arm of government in order to reach a conclusion that would be backed by law”, Bonu stated.

The Special Adviser acknowledged that although the State Government has been advocating for very low key celebrations of all festivities in view of the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic globally, the government will also look at the possibility of lending a hand to support the practitioners during this year’s ‘Isese Day’, the same way it has always assisted the practitioners of modern-day religions.

Bonu advised the traditionalists to be very moderate in all their activities, just as he urged the leadership of AATREN to prevail on their members across the State to observe all protocols of COVID-19 and ensure that they do not exceed 6 p,m in any of their activities while commemorating this year’s “Isese Day”.

Disclosing that plans are already being perfected by the Ministry to make the annual celebration more elaborate next year, the Special Adviser gave an assurance that the traditionalists would be fully carried along and involved in the programme.

The idea for the Ibile festival, according to him, is premised on the belief that before the arrival of Christianity and Islam, Africans had their ways of worshipping God, hence the need to celebrate the traditionalists with fanfare that will promote cultural heritage tourism in all the six divisions in Lagos State.

Bonu, therefore, called for prayers for Nigeria and Lagos State in the battle against the deadly Coronavirus as well as for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his entire team in their quest to bequeath a Greater Lagos that everyone will be proud of.

Earlier, the President of AATREN, Chief Olusegun Elegushi had presented the request for approval of August 20th as a public holiday the same way practitioners of other religions enjoy public holidays, arguing that the denial of a single day as public holiday out of 365 days in a year is not fair to the practitioners.

Citing the instance of Osun State which has accorded due recognition to August 20th of every year as “Isese Day” for the practitioners of the traditional religion, the traditionalist pleaded with the Lagos State Government to fast track consideration of the request from the association.
