Man arrested for defiling his 15-year-old daughter in Lagos

It was like a drama in Lagos yesterday when Lagos Police Division revealed the identity of a 40-year-old man, Gbenga Taiwo arrested for allegedly defiling his daughter, Folake (not real name).

Taiwo, a widower, and his 15-year-old daughter live together in a rented apartment at Baruwa, Ipaja area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that the father had been constantly molesting the girl since she was 13 by dipping his fingers into her private parts.

Folake, having got tired of the molestation, was said to have reported his father to their landlord who warned Taiwo to desist from the act.

He allegedly persisted which prompted the girl to report him to her uncle recently. While the uncle was trying to handle the case discreetly, a neighbour got wind of it and escalated it.

OduduwaNews learnt that the matter was reported at the Ipaja Police Station and Taiwo was arrested last Saturday.

The Coordinator of a child rights group following up on the case, Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network, Mr Ebenezer Omejalile, while speaking to the PRESS MEN on the matter, said Taiwo claimed to have suspected Folake of going out with men and decided to conduct “a virginity test” on her with his finger.

Meanwhile, the Lagos Police Headquarters has assured Lagosians that all hands shall be on deck to ensure that the rapist which happened to be the father of Folake (not real name) is brought to justice to serve as deterrent to others.

Ondo Council Poll Marred by Violence, Snatching of Ballot Boxes

The Local Council election held today, Saturday, 22nd of August, 2020 across the local government areas of Ondo State. Our correspondent gathered that the election which started peacefully at exactly 12:00pm was marred by violence in some places due to various reasons given by the aggrieved loyal party members.

Our correspondent who covered the poll in Ondo State could reliably gathered that many polling units did not get electoral materials in some places due to the failure of some staff members of Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission ODIEC to arrive various polling units with electoral materials on time.

Voter apathy was also apparent in all the local governments across Ondo State while thugs loyal to some candidates reportedly snatched away ballot boxes in some polling units.

Meanwhile, the poll which started peacefully later turned violent in some places visited by our Correspondent as some hoodlums seen engaging themselves in a free-for-all, brandishing cutlasses and other dangerous weapons to inflict bodily injuries on themselves while voters were seen scampering for safety.

It was learnt that some political thugs hijacked ballot boxes and took them away to an unknown destination in some places.

Though, the election was relatively peaceful in many local government areas of the state, voters’ apathy was, however, recorded across board.

Group petitions NBA, demands the withdrawal of Obasanjo as Conference Speaker

A group of lawyers has asked the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to withdraw the invitation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state, as speakers for its annual conference.

This comes a few days after the NBA withdrew its invitation to Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, as a speaker at the conference following an outcry by some lawyers who said the governor stands against what the profession represents.

The lawyers, under the umbrella of the Radical Agenda Movement in the Nigerian Bar Association (RAMINBA), said both Obasanjo and Wike have acted against the rule of law.

In a statement on Saturday, Adesina Ogunlana, RAMINBA chairman, and Ayo Ademiluyi, the secretary, accused Obasanjo of masterminding the Odi massacre of 1999 and attempted to tamper with the constitution for a third-term agenda.

“We are however baffled that the list of speakers at the conference still retains the names of Balogun Olusegun Obasanjo, retired general and former president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as well as that of Mr Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State,” the group said.

“We are persuaded that these men by their antecedents vis-a-vis the respect for and promotion for the rule of law and due process are not fit for an invitation as speakers in a function such as the conference of Nigerian Bar Association, which mantra remains promoting the rule of law.

“Balogun Obasanjo is known in Nigeria’s most recent history to have launched some of the most brutal assaults on the concept of rule of law. Kindly recall that it was Obasanjo, sworn to uphold the constitution of the land, who refused to obey the supreme court order for the release of the N21 billion Lagos state local government funds illegally and oppressively withheld by his administration.

“Despite the popular outcry that the supreme court is obeyed, President Obasanjo arrogantly declined obedience. He remained adamant all through his administration and it was President Yaradua who later complied with the judgement.”

The lawyers also accused Wike of destroying properties during the COVID-19 lockdown in his state despite a court order against his action.

“He is the same governor who ordered the demolition without a court order of two hotels in Rivers state recently. The Rivers states task force under the control of Governor Wike is an agency notorious for violation of human rights of citizens in carrying out their tasks,” the lawyers stated.

“However, each of the lawmaker according to the source is expected to get between N10 million to N20 million following the governor’s approval,” the blogger added.

She explained that the upskilling of artisans is to enhance productivity in order to create wealth, stating that the graduands have been trained in several areas including Catering and Event Decoration, Tie and Dye Technology, Fashion and Footwear designing, hairdressing and cosmetology etc.

Dapo-Thomas, therefore, urged the graduands to leverage the endless prospects that the State has to offer as the fastest growing economy in Africa.

Speaking on behalf of the graduands, Mrs. Anosike Josephine, the best graduating student in Catering and Event Decoration, thanked the Lagos State Government for the opportunity to upgrade their skills, while promising that they will put into good use the new skills acquired.

Oyo Council Chair, Timothy Ogunleke Commissions Projects

Yesterday, the 20th of August, 2020 was a memorable moment in Ado-Awaye and its environs as the Chairman of Araromi Local Council Development Area of Oyo State, Hon. Timothy Ogunleke commissioned some projects in his council.

The Chairman of the LCDA, Hon. Timothy Ogunleke in his remark, said the Governor of Oyo State announced the list of caretaker chairmen on the 19th of December, 2019 and they were sworn in on the 23rd of January, 2019. He stated that, since the inception of his administration, he has been embarking on developmental projects to ensure that the entire Ado-Awaye and its environs is given a new facelift.

Ogunleke was quoted as saying, “today is historic in Ado-Awaye as we are launching some projects that will bring development to the council. You will recall that when we came on board, the entire town was thrown into darkness as Ado-Awaye was cut off from national grid due to the complete damage of the electric transformer which inhibits flow of power generation to the town. The inability to have power supply has brought untold hardship to the people of Ado-Awaye as all economic actitivities are on the verge of total collapse if nothing is done to restore the power supply for economic development of the town.

“The people of Ado-Awaye told us when we came on board that their only demand is just the restoration of power supply and that if our administration could achieve that, it is enough for them but we told them that we would make sure that all hands are on deck to ensure that the power supply is restored as well as embarking on other meaningful projects.

“We vouched for them that we would not stop at restoring the light but to bring some other developmental projects to the town.

“My good people of Ado-Awaye, today, while we are commissioning the projects as witnessed by PRESS MEN, I can authoritatively inform you that your prayer has been answered and within few weeks your light will be restored”.

He averred further that their administration inherited the power failure due to the damaged electric transformer but as a people oriented government led by the governor of the people, Engr. Seyi Makinde who sees governance as a continuum necessitated him to strive with the efforts of some stakeholders in his party to ensure that not only that the power is restored but also embark on projects that would be commissioned in the presence of PRESS MEN.

The Honourable representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju State Constituency while speaking said, “to the glory of God, the darkness in his hometown which is Ado-Awaye will be restored within few weeks. He said the vision has been achieved as a result of the synergy and cooperation between him and the chairman. Dele Adeola said, all those who want him and the chairman to be fighting could now see that if there is no cooperation between him and the chairman such a monumental achievement that the past administration could not achieve will be a mirage. He thanks the good people of Ado-Awaye for their support since the inception of his administration while urging them to ensure the safety of the new electric transformer whenever it is installed so as to prevent some unscrupulous people who may have it in their minds that such achievement has brought a total shame to them due to their inability to do same in their political dispensation.

Hon. Timothy Ogunleke thanks Senator Hosea Agboola (Halleluyah) for his elderly role and support towards the achievement of the feat. He expresses his gratitude to Hon. Dele Adeola for his outstanding legislative role at the State Assembly towards ensuring that Ado-Awaye light is restored and also appreciates his counterpart at Iseyin Local Government, Hon. Abilawon and other stakeholders.

Hon. Timothy, while rounding up his speech took the PRESS MEN, the people of the town and some other dignitaries to commission some projects he has embarked on which include grading of all roads that are not motorable, drilling of boreholes, construction of a bridge at Osoogun town and others in his local council.
