LASWA to embark on safety sensitization, enforcement during ’ember’ months

As part of efforts to continue sensitisation and the enforcement of all waterways rules and regulations, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), is set to commence a holistic safety awareness campaign and strict monitoring for the remaining four months of the year 2020.

A statement issued by the General Manager of the Authority, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, disclosed that LASWA plans to carry out an all-inclusive Safety Advocacy programme targeted at all waterways stakeholders, including Boat Captains and Deckhands, Fishermen, Dredgers, Loggers as well as Ferry passengers across all jetties and terminals in the State.

Emmanuel said, “During the planned Safety Awareness programme, Boat Captains will be educated and cautioned about the rainy season, overloading, consumption of alcohol or drugs, night travels and over speeding, among other safety measures. Other waterways users will also be enlightened on the importance of using standard Life Jackets with emphasis on what is expected of them when a boat is in distress and other survival skills during an emergency situation”.

Advising Boat Operators to always put the safety of their passengers above all other considerations by regularly going for a boat hull while engines undergo regular and routine maintenance, the General Manager emphasised that the Agency’s enforcement team will continue to patrol the waterways to ensure that all operators comply with best practices on design, construction, operations and safety.

While asserting that violators will be apprehended and prosecuted, Emmanuel maintained that as a responsible agency of government, LASWA will continue to adopt the carrot and stick approach by sensitising the populace at all times while also enforcing all waterways rules and regulations.

Group petitions NBA, demands the withdrawal of Obasanjo as Conference Speaker

A group of lawyers has asked the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to withdraw the invitation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state, as speakers for its annual conference.

This comes a few days after the NBA withdrew its invitation to Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, as a speaker at the conference following an outcry by some lawyers who said the governor stands against what the profession represents.

The lawyers, under the umbrella of the Radical Agenda Movement in the Nigerian Bar Association (RAMINBA), said both Obasanjo and Wike have acted against the rule of law.

In a statement on Saturday, Adesina Ogunlana, RAMINBA chairman, and Ayo Ademiluyi, the secretary, accused Obasanjo of masterminding the Odi massacre of 1999 and attempted to tamper with the constitution for a third-term agenda.

“We are however baffled that the list of speakers at the conference still retains the names of Balogun Olusegun Obasanjo, retired general and former president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as well as that of Mr Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State,” the group said.

“We are persuaded that these men by their antecedents vis-a-vis the respect for and promotion for the rule of law and due process are not fit for an invitation as speakers in a function such as the conference of Nigerian Bar Association, which mantra remains promoting the rule of law.

“Balogun Obasanjo is known in Nigeria’s most recent history to have launched some of the most brutal assaults on the concept of rule of law. Kindly recall that it was Obasanjo, sworn to uphold the constitution of the land, who refused to obey the supreme court order for the release of the N21 billion Lagos state local government funds illegally and oppressively withheld by his administration.

“Despite the popular outcry that the supreme court is obeyed, President Obasanjo arrogantly declined obedience. He remained adamant all through his administration and it was President Yaradua who later complied with the judgement.”

The lawyers also accused Wike of destroying properties during the COVID-19 lockdown in his state despite a court order against his action.

“He is the same governor who ordered the demolition without a court order of two hotels in Rivers state recently. The Rivers states task force under the control of Governor Wike is an agency notorious for violation of human rights of citizens in carrying out their tasks,” the lawyers stated.

Lagos Celebrates Tradesmen, Artisans Day, Upskills 500 Artisans

As part of efforts to continually improve the quality of artisans in the State for global competitiveness, the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, on Thursday, celebrated the Y2020 Tradesmen and Artisans day with a graduation ceremony for 500 upskilled artisans.

At a brief ceremony held at Blue Roof, LTV 8, Ikeja, the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs. Yetunde Arobieke, charged the graduands to be alive to their civic responsibility as productive citizens of the State, adding that the upskilling of practising artisans is the demonstration of the government’s desire to ensure that they adapt to the rapidly changing dynamics in their chosen vocations.

“This upskilling programme is to equip you towards becoming the 21st Century artisans in line with the present administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda. It gives me a deep sense of satisfaction to see you graduate today; this shows our commitment to ensuring that the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises sector of our State’s economy grows and flourishes beyond limit”, Arobieke noted.

The Commissioner noted that the theme of Y2020 celebration – “Building a Vibrant Informal Sector for Sustainable Economic Growth” – revealed the focus of government to grow small and medium scale businesses, urging the graduates to be dedicated and disciplined at all times.

While advising the participants to have a positive mindset as they contribute their quota to making Lagos economically viable, Arobieke said that after undergoing eight weeks intensive training, graduands are expected to attain financial independence as well as improved socio-economic wellbeing.

Arobieke explained that the informal sector contributes a large chunk to the GDP of the State, hence, Lagos Artisans need to be up and doing as they are vital to the T.H.E.M.E.S development Agenda of the State.

“The informal sector is the engine that drives the economy, it therefore becomes expedient for the artisans to work towards the realisation of a common purpose, which is to build a vibrant sector for sustainable growth with a view to making Lagos a 21st Century Economy”.

The Commissioner announced that Governor Sanwo-Olu has approved the upskilling of additional 2000 tradesman before the year runs out, while three hectares of land at Ganyingbo in Badagry has been secured by the State Government for the building of the Lagos State Council of Tradesman and Artisans (LACOSTA) Secretariat.

She also solicited for the cooperation of all stakeholders in evolving ideas and strategies for sustainable policies to grow the sector, acknowledging and appreciating the support of critical stakeholders over time.

Chairman of the Lagos State Assembly House Committee on Wealth Creation and Employment, Mr. Jude Idimogu, congratulated the graduands for completing the programme, noting that skillful people are in high demand, therefore, ample opportunities for them to excel.

He enjoined the graduands to make good use of the opportunities available to them and advised Lagosians to key into the various entrepreneurship programmes.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Boladele Dapo-Thomas said the tradesmen and artisans day was set aside annually by the Ministry to celebrate skilled and vocational workers in the State as a recognition of their vital role in the pyramid of socio-economic development, which is critical to achieving sustainable growth and overall prosperity of the citizenry.

She explained that the upskilling of artisans is to enhance productivity in order to create wealth, stating that the graduands have been trained in several areas including Catering and Event Decoration, Tie and Dye Technology, Fashion and Footwear designing, hairdressing and cosmetology etc.

Dapo-Thomas, therefore, urged the graduands to leverage the endless prospects that the State has to offer as the fastest growing economy in Africa.

Speaking on behalf of the graduands, Mrs. Anosike Josephine, the best graduating student in Catering and Event Decoration, thanked the Lagos State Government for the opportunity to upgrade their skills, while promising that they will put into good use the new skills acquired.

Lagos Considers August 20th Public Holiday For Traditionalists

Lagos State Government, on Tuesday, assured the Association of African Traditional Religion, Nigeria and Overseas (AATREN), Lagos State Chapter, that it has not jettisoned the request of the practitioners of the traditional religion for the declaration of August 20 as a public holiday in their favour.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Solomon Bonu, disclosed this when members of the Association visited his office in Alausa, Ikeja, describing the association as promoters of the indigenous cultural heritage of the State.

He pleaded with the members to allow the State Government follow due process before acceding to their request, considering the legal implications of making such a declaration without due diligence.

“You know that it is a matter of law; even the House Assembly has deliberated on this same issue which attests to the fact that the approval is not such that can be solely granted by the executive arm of the Government. It requires working together with the legislative arm of government in order to reach a conclusion that would be backed by law”, Bonu stated.

The Special Adviser acknowledged that although the State Government has been advocating for very low key celebrations of all festivities in view of the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic globally, the government will also look at the possibility of lending a hand to support the practitioners during this year’s ‘Isese Day’, the same way it has always assisted the practitioners of modern-day religions.

Bonu advised the traditionalists to be very moderate in all their activities, just as he urged the leadership of AATREN to prevail on their members across the State to observe all protocols of COVID-19 and ensure that they do not exceed 6 p,m in any of their activities while commemorating this year’s “Isese Day”.

Disclosing that plans are already being perfected by the Ministry to make the annual celebration more elaborate next year, the Special Adviser gave an assurance that the traditionalists would be fully carried along and involved in the programme.

The idea for the Ibile festival, according to him, is premised on the belief that before the arrival of Christianity and Islam, Africans had their ways of worshipping God, hence the need to celebrate the traditionalists with fanfare that will promote cultural heritage tourism in all the six divisions in Lagos State.

Bonu, therefore, called for prayers for Nigeria and Lagos State in the battle against the deadly Coronavirus as well as for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his entire team in their quest to bequeath a Greater Lagos that everyone will be proud of.

Earlier, the President of AATREN, Chief Olusegun Elegushi had presented the request for approval of August 20th as a public holiday the same way practitioners of other religions enjoy public holidays, arguing that the denial of a single day as public holiday out of 365 days in a year is not fair to the practitioners.

Citing the instance of Osun State which has accorded due recognition to August 20th of every year as “Isese Day” for the practitioners of the traditional religion, the traditionalist pleaded with the Lagos State Government to fast track consideration of the request from the association.
