Students in Oyo State have embarked on protest to demand for an end to the long-running ASUU strike.

Students are calling on the Federal Government and academics to reach an agreement and terminate the strike.

Students at LAUTECH University in Ogbomosho barricaded the main road in front of the school, asking on the state governor, Seyi Makinde, to opt out of ASUU, as several other state universities have done, so that academic activity could continue.

The SUG President stated that LAUTECH has already been through numerous industrial crises and should not be subjected to further suffering.

In Ibadan, the southwest arm of Nigeria, a similar protest is taking place in Ibadan by the arm of National Association of Nigerian Students NANS, Southwest Chapter. The students who displayed series of placards with various inscriptions too to the streets and barricade major access to suburb of Ibadan.

Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, a former Director General of the Bola Tinubu Campaign Organization, has explained why the ex-governor of Lagos State abandoned his presidential campaign on the APC platform (APC).

Jibrin stated in a statement yesterday that after defecting from the APC to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), led by former Kano governor and NNPP presidential hopeful, Rabiu Kwankwaso, he had no alternative but to withdraw from Tinubu’s presidential campaign.

But the former member of the House of Representatives insisted that his beef was with Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, not Tinubu.

The ex-lawmaker said in a statement titled ‘Why I Left the APC – Hon Abdulmumin Jibrin’ that his political life had been terrible for the past seven years due to the overbearing nature of the party’s leaders in his home state in Kano. He said, “in my twenty-three years of postgraduate experience, the last seven years were my most unremarkable, so much that my long-established career almost reached a point of utter implosion.

“The horrifying disappointments of my past seven years revolved around this character who’s determined to destroy anybody that activates his glaring inferiority complex. His sadistic instincts make him quite a frightening ally, so much that he feels the need to treat his allies as the marginalized black Africans in apartheid-era South Africans to feel a sense of superiority and misguided advantage. I dedicated everything to the political interests of this man, but he kept asking for more. This circus became too embarrassing that I had to take a step back for soul-searching to redeem myself. There’s a difference between service for the common good and a quest to be worshipped by one’s allies. We must never confuse loyalty with slavery.”

“This man yearned for that and put me through a mentally draining phase in my life that I had to step aside to reflect on my political choices. It’s unsurprising that all his political principals and lieutenants are deserting him, and he risks becoming an island at the end of his stewardship.

Honourable Joshua Oyebamiji, Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State, has intimated that Engineer Rauf Olaniyan, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, may shortly decamp to the APC.

Former Chairman of the Oyo House of Assembly Committee on Information and Security Matters, Aanuoluwapo Omorinde, responded to questions from Aanuoluwapo Omorinde on BOTTOM LINE- a political program on IBR 92.5fm Ibadan today, saying Governor Makinde is now left with a crowd without political relevance, adding that the real people are no longer with him.

“How can someone say he doesn’t have a political father?” Is it possible to achieve anything without a mentor? He has lost the popular support that propelled him to power. He’s losing heavyweights on a daily basis, which indicates something.”

“People are leaving the PDP and they are coming into the APC on daily basis. His Deputy is coming to join us very soon, I can confirm that to you, you will see it.

But reacting, the State Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, Elder Dayo Ogungbenro said as the Chairman of the party in the State, he is not aware the Deputy Governor intends to leave the party. His words, “I am not aware the Deputy Governor who is one of our leaders wants to leave the party. If it is true, we can only wish him well”

He denied the insinuation that the Governor has hijacked the party structure stressing that the Governor has never given him or his Executive Council any problem in the daily running of the party. “I laugh when people say these things. Some people who are not informed talk of imposition. They don’t know what they are saying. We are the ruling party and we want to win elections that is why we adopted consensus. I give you an instance, in Ogbomoso North local government area, there are about 17 Aspirants. Primary is like a war, do you now expect us to allow all of them to go into primary? That was why we adopted consensus and the governor never imposed anyone on the Elders or anybody”.

He also announced that the Governor has instructed that Oloye Jumoke Akinjide be adopted as the statutory delegate from Ona-Ara local government at the National Convention.

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,SAN, has congratulated a Nigerian Medical Doctor, Boubini Miyensinte Jones-Wonni on her emergence as the best graduating student in the Howard University Medical School, class of 2022, at the age of 22.

The Governor also celebrated Boubini on her admission into the prestigious Harvard University Medical School as one of the only two members of her class admitted for residency (Post Training) training in internal Medicine.

Boubini is from Arogbo-Ijaw Kingdom in Ese- Odo local government area of Ondo State.

While commending Boubini for her exemplary display of brilliance and intelligence, Governor Akeredolu said she has exhibited the ethos and values the people of the Sunshine State are known for-resilience, hardwork and dedication.

“The young Boubini is our pride in Ondo State. The people of the Sunshine State are known for alluring values and ethos. She has displayed the brilliance we are known for in her exploits even from elementary stage.

“Undoubtedly, Boubini has carved a niche for herself. She is evidently cruising on an excellent path of greatness to the future with a clear vision to render nothing but excellence. The numerous laurels to her credit in the course of her academic pursuits, even at a very young age, underscores her zeal to unleash her outstanding potentials on the world.

“On behalf of the people of the sunshine state, I celebrate our own Boubini. I congratulate the good people of Arogbo-Ijaw Kingdom, and most especially, her parents, who have built her a strong academic background and provided the needed encouragement. We are indeed, proud of her. She is our collective pride.

“On our part, we shall continue to prioritise education and celebrate excellence when it is achieved. It is our belief, that the young Boubini will continue to inspire our young people to strive for excellence. We shall always remind the people of our dear state of our core values. Governor Akeredolu wishes Boubini a very successful career, while praying to God to grant her long life and good health to reach her full potentials.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned the killing in Sokoto of a student, Deborah Samuel, over allegation of blasphemy.

In a statement released by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Friday, 13th May, 2022, MURIC described the killing as outrageous, illegal and unlawful.

The full statement reads :

“A female student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, Deborah Samuel, was on Thursday killed for allegedly blaspheming against the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The blaspheme statement was reportedly posted on a whatshap group. She was asked to withdraw the statement but she allegedly refused to do so. The school’s security unit and police were overwhelmed by the crowd when they tried to rescue her.

“MURIC strongly condemns this killing and all others that have been happening in Nigeria in recent times. Those aggrieved by the student’s post should have reported her to the security agencies or to the Shariah police, the hizbah. Mob killing is archaic and bohemian. It belongs to the Stone Age. Nobody has the right to take the law into his hands.

“The Glorious Qur’an compares the killing of a single person to the killing of the whole of humanity just as it compares the saving of a life to the rescue of all homo sapiens (Qur’an 5:32) In like manner, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) himself condemned all acts of violence and advocated peaceful conduct at all times.

“But this incident should not be condemned in isolation. The recent trend whereby Nigerians now freely shed their brothers blood should be condemned by all patriots. In this regard, we also strongly denounce the killing of several Northern Muslims in the South East in the past few months.

“We frown at the recent burning last week of a truck fully loaded with cows in the South East as well as the killing of many Muslims of South East origin by their Igbo brothers in the same South East. We note with keen interest that Muslims in the North did not retaliate when these killings were taking place.

“MURIC calls on the Sokoto Police Command to do everything within its power to get to the bottom of the yesterday’s killing of the female student over alleged blasphemy. We appeal to members of the public to remain calm and law abiding. Nigerians should allow the police to carry out its investigations on the case. The Sokoto Police Command has started well as it already has two suspects in detention for the killing.

“Meanwhile we remind Nigerians to always exercise restraint on matters of religion. Free speech is no longer free if it amounts to religious provocation. Even the European Court has ruled that the utterance of derisive statements against the prophet of any religion is a crime.

“We affirm clearly, categorically and unequivocally that there is a symbiotic relationship between provocation, violence and extremism. While MURIC will not condone extremism and violence, the anatomy of terrorism is becoming clearer day by day. We must all ponder over the causal-effect theory. Violence and terrorism are mere symptoms. The real disease is provocation. Violence and terrorism are mere smoke. Provocation is the fire and we all know that there is no smoke without fire.

“We therefore appeal to Nigerians to desist from insulting, deriding or abusing the prophets of other religions. Muslims should continue to respect Jesus (peace be upon him) whom the Christians hold very dear. In the same vein, Christians should avoid casting aspersion on the person of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). We have experienced enough religious crisis in the land.
