The protesting students who made their way to the Students’ Union building on Wednesday morning as gathered by our correspondent placed it under lock to hinder activities and movement to and fro the Union building.
Recall, ODUDUWA NEWS had reported a final year student of the institution was beaten to death yesterday by angry mob over alleged theft.
The Management of the institution has also reacted to the incident, appealing for calm while urging the students not to take laws into their hands as law enforcement agencies have taken up the case.
ODUDUWA NEWS has gathered that Hon. Justice Subulade Yerima has just been confirmed by Oyo State House of Assembly as the substantive Chief Judge of Oyo State.
The approval and confirmation of appointment was made known today at the Plenary of the members of Oyo State House of Assembly presided by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi.
Recall, ODUDUWA NEWS had earlier reported how the name of the acting Chief Judge now substantive Chief Judge was forwarded to the House of Assembly by the Executive Governor of the State, Engr. Seyi Makinde for screening and subsequent confirmation.
Justice Yerima took over from the erstwhile Chief Judge, Justice Muntar Abimbola who retired from service in January.
Hon. A.O Mustapha, the chairman committee on petitions and judiciary had recommended the confirmation of Yerima, the majority leader, adopted it and seconded by Hon. Babajide, before it was adopted by the entire house.
In their separate comments, lawmakers representing Ibadan North II state and Ibadan North East II constituencies, Hon. Babajide and Hon. Olusola Owolabi described Yerima as “a woman of integrity whose appointment would foster a rapid transformation of the judicial system in the state.
While addressing the members of the house of assembly, Hon. Justice Yerima said she will do her best to ensure a new judiciary in Oyo State.
“A greater challenge has been vested on me, to make Oyo state judiciary a pride of South West, and Nigeria. I’ll also ensure digitalization to ensure effectiveness in the Oyo Judiciary system, She stated.
“We will also ensure infrastructure in our courts, because there are a lot of things that needs to be in order, so we’ll make sure that everything is put in place and ensure that Oyo State is the pride of Africa”
Hon. Justice Iyabo Subulade Yerima was born on the 8th day September,1958 into the illustrious family of Akinloye of Oje-Itutaba Ibadan, in Ibadan North East Local Government.
She attended Omolewa Nursery and Primary School, Oritamefa, Ibadan from 1962-1969 and St Margret Girl’s Secondary School, Ilesa from January 1970-July 1974.
She also attended Ibadan Grammar School, Ibadan from 1974 – 1975. She did her A-level in The Polytechnic, Ibadan from 1975 – 1977.
His lordship was in University of Ife (now O.A.U) Ile-Ife, from 1977 – 1981, where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in English and Philosophy, before proceeding to the University of Buckingham, United Kingdom (September 1981-December 1983) for her L.L.B.
She proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos for her B.L (Barrister at Law) and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1985. She served her NYSC in the Faculty of Law, University of Ife, as an Assistant to the Faculty Officer and in the Law Reporting Section, from 1985 – 1986.
His lordship began her legal career in Kaduna State, with her pupillage at Baba Amartey & Co. (Barristers & Solicitors) and went on to set up her own flourishing Law office/Chambers – Yerima & Co. (Barristers & Solicitors) also in Zaria, Kaduna State, from May 1986-April 2001.
His Lordship was sworn in as a Judge of the High court of Oyo State in June 2001. His Lordship has attended several International and National Conferences. She has received several awards, among which are:

She has served on several committees, one of which is – Chairman, Sub-Committee on Non-Custodial Sentencing, Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee, Oyo State. She is currently the Administrative Judge for the Oyo State Judiciary.
His lordship enjoys Reading, Travelling, Organization of Social and Administrative functions, she is also an active participant in Church and Evangelistic Activities. She is married, with children and grandchildren.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says the call for his arrest and prosecution for admonishing Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over inciting the public to violence is unjustifiable.
The minister stated this on Wednesday in London while reacting to the call by Elder statesman and leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, Chief Edwin Clark, that he should be arrested and prosecuted for spreading “fake news” about Obi.
Mohammed said he stood by his admonition of Obi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, insisting that his advice was never premised on falsehood.
“What will be my offence? Is it by chiding vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party who said on live television that if the President-elect Bola Tinubu is sworn-in on May 29 that that would be the end of democracy in Nigeria?
“Is it for chiding him for saying that swearing-in Tinubu in May 29 is like swearing-in the military?
“What is the fake news in that?” the minister queried.
Mohammed also said that Obi had also not publicly called his running mate to order over the treasonable utterances.
“The position of the law is clear that anybody who is aggrieved over election results should go to court
“It is not to start threatening Nigerians and heating up the polity simply because you lost an election,” he said.
Mohammed stressed that the APC won the presidential election “fair and square” and INEC was right in declaring Tinubu the winner.
He reassured Nigerians and the international community that the president- elect would be sworn-in on May 29.
A 45- year-old man, Bayo Oluyomi, on Tuesday, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court on a charge of manslaughter.
Oluyomi, a driver who resides at 48, Dipo Akindele Street, Otta, Ogun, is facing a one-count charge of manslaughter.
The prosecutor, Insp. Rapheal Donny, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 6, along Oshodi Expressway, Lagos.
Donny said that the defendant drove in a reckless manner and knocked down a pedestrian, Miss Tolulope Ogunkorede who died on the spot.
He said that the offence contravened Section 52 of the Road Traffic Laws of Lagos State, 2018.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Magistrate, Mrs O. A. Odubayo granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Odubayo adjourned the case until April 26 for mention.
A final year Student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Okoli Chizoputam, has been beaten to death by angry mob on campus over alleged phone theft.
In a statement released by the Students Union Government, SUG, President, Folahan Festus, the student was pronounced dead on arrival at the Emergency Department of the OAU teaching hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
The release reads; “I regret to announce the death of a Part 5 student assaulted in a mob action at Awo Hall yesterday. The student was declared dead on arrival at the Emergency Medicine Department of OAU Teaching Hospital this afternoon.
“Preliminary investigations show that the deceased was accused to have stolen a phone. While we await official report from the law enforcement agencies, I must state that this incidence is a very sad one to Great Ife Students’ Union because our Union is not a Union of barbarians but that of intellectuals.
“Arrests and investigations of individuals suspected to be connected with the assault of the deceased are being made for consequent legal actions. Our Union does not support mob actions and justice must be served in this incident. Pending investigations of this unfortunate development, the activities of Hall Executive Council of Awo Hall are suspended immediately.
“What has just happened is most inhumane. Justice must be served accordingly irrespective of who is involved. Mob actions are banned and not allowed on OAU campus!
“I reassure Great Ife students that the Union is working assiduously with the school authorities and the relevant law enforcement officers to make sure that justice is meted out appropriately!”.
The indigenous students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH under the aegis of Federation of Ogbomosho Students’ Union FOGSU have mobilized themselves to barricade the main gate of the institution.
The students trooped out today to block main access to the institution.
Recall, Oduduwa News had earlier reported how the indigenous students of the institution had threatened to embark on protest against resumption of academic activities in LAUTECH Iseyin Campus, hinging their decision on the grounds that moving Faculty of Agriculture would hinder economic progress of the zone.
It was learnt that the school exam which supposed to start today was delayed for a while until normalcy returned.
According to our source, the Management of the institution addressed the protesting students to shun violence and any act that capable of disrupting the peace and harmony of the campus.
Meanwhile, many indigenous students and youths in Oke-Ogun have reacted to the recent action of Ogbomosho students, likened it to ignorance in public display.
The coalition of Oke-Ogun youth associations have unanimously condemned such action aimed at pitching Ogbomosho against Iseyin.
The youths further stated that Ogbomosho and Oke-Ogun have enjoyed smooth relationship and that action of few shenanigans cannot bring the relationship to an end.
A notable writer and ex-Oke-Ogun student leader, Comrade Ismael Taiwo popularly known as TCOOL in his words, said the latest action of the few disgruntled element can be likened to a dance of shame by some sponsored charlatans. He said the establishment of University has a process from legislative to executive point and that those embarking on protest are bereft of ideas of how government policies work.
Gunmen shot a policeman to death on Friday in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, police confirmed on Monday. It was further gathered that the assailants escaped with the rifle of the slain policeman.
The police spokesman in Lagos State, SP Benjamin Hundeyin told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that three other police operatives were seriously injured in the attack.
Operatives of the Imota Police Division in the Ikorodu area were on patrol duty when they came under the assailants’ attack at Emuren Junction, on Itokin Road in the area.
Local sources said the assailants, suspected errand boys of land grabbers, ambushed the police patrol team, opened fire on it, killed one on the spot and escaped with his rifle.
“On Saturday, police raided cultists’ hideouts in Emuren, Shagamu Local Government Area of Ogun,’’ a resident said.
NAN reports that many innocent people had fallen victim to gun attacks by agents of land grabbers in Ikorodu and its environs in the past.
The All Progressives Congress Osun State Chapter has asked the Peoples Democratic Party in the State to render unreserved apology to the workers over half salaries paid by Governor Adeleke.
The Party made this disclosure in a statement made available by Acting Chairman, Sokoto Takudeen Lawal to newsmen as read in part:
“Sequel to the falsehood and gibberish being fed the public by the confused leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State on the correct status of the inherited accumulated half salaries so far paid by the Governor Ademola Adeleke administration, the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has tasked the ruling party to publicly apologize to the government workers for misinforming the members of the public.
“It would be recalled that the PDP had dubiously and mischievously stated in a statement signed by its state caretaker committee chairman, Dr Akindele Adekunle, yesterday that Governor Adeleke has paid all the inherited 30 months’ half salaries within the time he came into the saddle about four months ago.
“It is not farfetched to observe and conclude that Dr Akindele dubiously made the fallacious statement in order to dupe and insult the collective intelligence of Osun workers and the general public.
“A fact check on the disclosure of the half salaries paid so far by the Adeleke administration shows that only two out of the 30 months’ half salaries have been paid by the ruling PDP administration.
“In the sixth paragraph of the PDP’s statement dated 06/04/2023, the state PDP caretaker chairman had stated that: “Since coming on board, Governor Adeleke has shown serious commitment to the welfare of workers in Osun State and even pensioners. This is evident in the payment of the 30 months’ half salaries and pension owed by the APC administration”.
“In his response, the Acting State Chairman of the Osun State chapter of the APC, Sooko Tajudeen Lawal, in a statement issued by the party’s Director of Media and Information, Chief Kola Olabisi, in Osogbo, the Osun State capital today, faulted the use of falsehood by the PDP chairman to drive the operations of the party and public conversations in the state.
In Lawal’s words: “While we are not unappreciative of the two months’ half salaries offset by Adeleke, it is pertinent to inform the confused and expired Osun State PDP caretaker chairman that his falsity in this regard is capable of being a recipe for avoidable unrest in the state when he fraudulently stated that the Adeleke administration had paid 30 months’half salaries whereas the reverse is the case.
“It is not unlikely that whoever talks too much will, one day, talks himself into a monumental trouble that may rubbish him in the similar situation that Dr Akindele and his co-travellers are now finding themselves.
“Is Dr Akindele not aware that the gibberish that he put into the public domain is capable of instigating the creditors of some of the government workers who might be thinking that they had truly collected the whole of the 30 months’ half salaries?
“Was it right for the PDP caretaker chairman who hails from Ondo State not to read through whatever is written for him by his media aide who also hails from Ilora in Oyo State before he appends his signature?
“We can see the level of the damage done by an imported caretaker party chairman and his media aide who are bereft of the residual knowledge of the state whose preoccupation is to daily flood the media space with jabberwockies without any regard for its correctness.
“The fact of the issue is that it is not correct that Adeleke had paid the Osun State workers the 30 months’ half salaries but only two and this should form the basis that the garrulous PDP caretaker chairman and Governor Adeleke must tender an unconditional apology to the Osun State workers.
“Let it be on record that as a government, we also paid arrears of half salaries. The only difference is that we never played politics with it as we concentrated on contributory pensioners at the state and local government levels,” Lawal added.
A 71-year-old man popularly known as Baba Jos in the Aba Alamu area of Apata, Ibadan, has reportedly died after smoking a dangerous drug known as Colorado.
Baba Jos, who until his death was a landlord in the community, died last Sunday.
The old man, who was notorious for being addicted to alcohol and tobacco, fell into coma immediately after taking the drug and eventually gave up the ghost three days after.
Sources at the Aba Alamu community informed newsmen that after collecting rents from some of the tenants in the 16-room one-storey building he inherited from his late mother, Baba Jos visited a joint to take alcoholic drinks and cigarettes as usual.
According to reports, the old man reportedly met some boys smoking colorado at the joint, and they invited him to join them.
Baba Jos, who had not tasted the hard drug before agreed and started smoking the stuff, because he was already drunk”, one of the sources explained.
The source further explained that immediately the man smoked the stuff, he started defecating on his body uncontrollably.
Initially, people at the joint were making jest of him, until he suddenly fell into coma and was rushed into his house located close to the joint.
“It was unfortunate that the old man did not come out of the coma until he died last week Sunday”, one of his tenants lamented.
