We’ll complete Ido-Eruwa road before end of 2023 – Makinde

Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde has assured the people of Ibarapaland that the Ido-Eruwa Road, linking the area to Ibadan, the state capital will be completed before the end of the year.

Makinde, who spoke at First Baptist Church, Anko, Eruwa, during the Thanksgiving Service in honour of the mother of the Speaker of the State’s House of Assembly, Hon Debo Ogundoyin , Mrs. Justina Ogundoyin, said that the road project would not experience any further delay.

He said: “I want to assure you that this project(Ido-Eruwa road) will also be like that of Ogbomoso-Iseyin Road. “I know some of you have used it in recent time and have seen how beautiful and quality it is.
“From Ido, it should not take us more than 25 minutes to get to Eruwa. Under Omituntun 2.0, I want to assure you that people will be living in Eruwa and be working at Secretariat in Ibadan. “Within the next three weeks, work will begin on the road again.

“During the campaign period, I promised that the road will be commissioned before the end of this year and I want to confirm it will be so.” He thanked the people of Ibarapaland for voting massively for his re-election.
He also eulogised the late Mrs. Ogundoyin for living an impactful life, adding that it is not how long one lives but how well.

“First, I want to thank God because today is a thanksgiving Sunday. It is generally believed that one needs to spend many years to live an impactful life. No, it is not how long but how well and impactful.
“Our mother, Justina Ogundoyin, we can see that she led an impactful life, despite her short period. She raised respectful and godly children. So, we thank God for that, though I know it is tough,” Makinde said.
While admonishing The Speaker and his siblings to have faith in God despite the demise of their mother, the governor said:

“Let me finally say to the Honourable Speaker and his siblings that it is time to have absolute faith in God. As a government , it is very easy to derail, especially when you are dealing with power. But I want to urge you to keep praying for us.”

The governor thereafter made a personal donation of N1million to the Church. Speaking on behalf of his siblings, the Speaker Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, appreciated Governor Seyi Makinde and the entire people of the state for standing by them throughout the funeral programme of their later mother.

Earlier in his sermon, the presiding Pastor, First Baptist Church Anko, Eruwa, Reverend, Michael Ayoola, who read from Philippines Chapter 4 verse 20, said that only Almighty God is worthy of praise in any situation.

He described late Mrs. Ogundoyin as a highly dedicated personalty who really scarified to serve the lord in his vine yard during her life time.

Among the dignitaries who attended the event were the deputy governor of the state, Barrister Bayo-Lawal, state lawmakers, Commissioners, Political functionaries, and well wishers.

Lagos Court sentences businessman to six years imprisonment for smuggling cocaine

A Federal High Court in Lagos State has convicted and sentenced a 49-year-old businessman, Celestino Kingsley, aka Okafor Kingsley Ikenna, to six years imprisonment for illegally exporting 9.40kg of cocaine.

Justice Daniel Osiagor handed down the jail term this month after Kingsley admitted committing the offence and pleaded guilty to the charge.

The convict was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on two counts of conspiracy and the unlawful export of the banned substance in a charge marked FHC/L/196c/2023.

The prosecutor, Augustine Nwagu, told the court that the convict, sometime in March, conspired with one Chibuzor Okoye, who is said to be on the run, to commit the offence.

The prosecutor told the court that the convict was arrested on March 4, 2023, during the outward clearance of passengers of a Qatar Airways flight to India via Doha, at the new terminal 11 of the Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

According to the prosecutor, the offence committed is contrary to and punishable under Sections 14(b) and 11(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement A. Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The convict pleaded guilty to the charges, and following his guilty plea, the prosecutor urged the court to convict and sentence him according to the sections of the NDLEA Act he was charged with. But his lawyer pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing his client.

The lawyer urged the court to take into account his client’s timely guilty plea as a first-time offender, and that since his client was arrested, he had turned a new leaf, with a promise not to engage in any illegal acts.

He, consequently, pleaded with the court to grant his client an option of a fine instead of a jail term.

In his reply, the prosecutor admitted that the convict was a first offender without any previous conviction record.

Justice Osiagor, in his judgment, sentenced Kingsley to three years each for the two counts, adding that the jail term should run concurrently.

The judge, however, gave the convict an option of N2.5m fine on each of the counts and also ordered that the monetary option should run consecutively.

24-Year-Old Man Breaks Into Apartment, Carts Away Laptop, Resells It At N12,000

Operatives of the Bayelsa State Volunteers have arrested a suspected thief for allegedly stealing an HP laptop at Agudama-Epie in Yenagoa, the State Capital.

The Suspect identified as Richard Olopele, 24, hails from Arogbo Community in Ondo State but resident in Agudama.

In a confessional statement made after his arrest on Thursday, April 13, 2023, the suspect admitted to have broken into Engr. Lambert Miebi’s living home at Agudama-Epie in the guise of looking for his friend who is a relative of Lambert.

Further interrogation revealed that he had sold the Laptop with the sum of twelve thousand naira (12,000.00) and the buyer has been reportedly arrested.

The Suspect has since been handed over to the Anti-Cultism Unit, Nigeria Police Force, Bayelsa State Command for further investigation and prosecution.

3-Year-Old Girl Battling For Life, Seeks Help For Bone Marrow Surgery

ODUDUWA NEWS has gathered that a young kid has been diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anaemia and she is battling to save life, recent findings revealed that one of her parent’s genotype was wrongly diagnosed for (AA) before marriage, she’s carrying this burden and fate due to the negligence of the health practitioners.

The three-year-old young kid is in need of financial assistance to live healthy life and free from sickle cell. Out of 28,000 dollars needed for the surgery, $10,000 has been realized.

She will be flown abroad to seek medical help from Fortis Memorial Research Institute located in India.

Why we can’t ban ‘Gangs of Lagos’ – NFVCB

Following the controversies that have trailed the movie, “Gangs of Lagos”, since it was released on Amazon Prime Video, the National Film and Video Censors Board, NFVCB, has explained why they cannot ban it.

The Executive Director and CEO of the regulatory body, Alhaji Adedayo Thomas, said the board can’t take any action against the movie for now.

According to him, the NFVCB has no legal backing to regulate what is being exhibited on the online platform.

Alhaji Thomas made this known to newsmen yesterday.

He regretted that regulating online platform poses a lot of difficulties since it’s not part of the mandate of the Board.

“Have you seen the movie in any cinema house or being exhibited in any open space? Our job does not cover regulating online platforms.

“I don’t know why people are referring to the Censors Board to take action. We have a bill before the National Assembly seeking to empower the Board to regulate online platforms and any other platforms where movies are exhibited.

“Online platform is difficult to regulate and it’s not part of our mandate,” Alhaji Thomas explained.

His explanation became necessary as Lagos indigenes, on the platform of Isale Eko Descendants’ Union (IDU) recently petitioned the Censors Board over alleged defamation of their community and Eyo masquerade in the ‘Gangs of Lagos’ film.

Lagos State Government, on its part, described the movie as a cultural misrepresentation as well as portraying the culture of the state in a derogatory manner.

According to the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, the Ministry, being the regulatory body and custodian of the culture of Lagos State, viewed the film as a mockery of the heritage of Lagos.

Rerun: INEC Declares Agboworin, Sadipe Winners Of Ibadan S.East/ N. East, Oluyole Federal Constituencies

PDP candidate and serving Federal lawmaker representing Ibadan North-East/South-East Federal Constituency, Hon. Abass Adigun popularly called (Agboworin) has been declared winner of the 2023 House of Representatives election of the Ibadan South-East/North-East Federal Constituency. The announcement was made by INEC this evening after the final collation of the supplementary election held in 6 polling-units in Ibadan North-East LG and Ibadan South-East LG.

The Returning Officer, Professor Benjamin Olley announced the result of the election that Hon. Abass Adigun of PDP scored a total of 28, 111 votes to defeat all other candidates who contested the election, Dapo Lam of Apc with 27,338votes as second position, Ajaja Adebukola of Accord with 6223 votes in third position.

Others who participated such as candidates of SDP got 337votes, LP 2749, PRP scored 33, NNPP scored 621.

In the meantime, the APC candidate, Hon. Tolulope Akande-Sadipe has been declared as the winner of member House of Representatives, Oluyole Federal Constituency.

Hon. Tolulope Akande-Sadipe – 14,891 votes

Hon. Mogbojubola Olawale Mojeed – 13,073 votes

Difference: 1,818 votes (APC WIN).

Sadipe returned re-elected for the third term.

Police Confirms Arrest Of Soldier For Allegedly Stabbing Civilian In Ondo

A soldier serving with the Nigerian Army has been arrested by the state police command for allegedly stabbing one boy Bummi Omodele in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

The soldier named Tope Kazeem was alleged to have stabbed the victim severally at the back and other parts of the body with knife as the victim who is now in a critical condition has been rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

It was gathered that, he was said to have committed the crime with his friend, Azeez Ayomide at Adilewa area, off Oyemekun road, Akure.

The soldier was at the area to protect his friend (Ayomide) who had a minor disagreement with the victim.

Reacting, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami confirmed the incident, but she did not give further details.

It was however gathered that the soldier had been transferred to the police headquarters for further interrogation.

Building Collapse: Lagos Govt Begins Structural Integrity Test On Banana Island Houses

The Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory has commenced structural integrity test on the building structures under construction in the Banana Island area of Lagos State.

This was revealed in a post shared on the agency’s Instagram account on Friday.

The test is as a result of the seven-storey building under construction that collapsed on Wednesday on 1st Avenue, Banana Island, Lagos State.

The agency wrote, “Important Information. Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory, LSMTL commences immediate Non-Destructive (structural integrity) Test, NDT of the adjoining buildings at the Banana Island building collapse site.

“Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory Initiating structural integrity test on the buildings at the Banana Island.”

Shina Peller urges Tinubu to increase budgetary allocation for creative industry

The President-elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been charged by a member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Shina Peller, to increase the budgetary allocation for the Ministry of Information and Culture in the 2024 Appropriation Act for optimal performance of the nation’s creative industry.

Honourable Peller, who represents Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency, made the call while sharing on his social media handles the video of himself moving a motion on the floor of the House on the urgent need to strengthen Nigeria’s creative industry.

Honourable Peller observed that globally, creative industry has become a driver of employment, economic growth, innovation and social cohesion. He added that Nigeria’s creative industry contributes significantly to the nation’s GDP, offering legitimate employment to people, thereby making it the second largest employer of labour after agriculture.

He said

“As Nigeria transitions into a new government, I urge the incoming administration to increase the budgetary allocation of the Ministry of Information and Culture in the 2024 Appropriation Act for optimal performance in the nation’s creative industry.

“This is an industry that contributes significantly to the nation’s GDP, offering legitimate employment to people, thereby making it the second largest employer of labor after agriculture.

“To move this sector forward we need young and vibrant youths to churn out policy reforms that can drive growth and development and attract investment opportunities.”

The Oke Ogun-born federal lawmaker in the said motion, which has been adopted by the House, observed that Nigeria’s film sector (Nollywood) is one of the most lucrative and active creative industries which contributes about 2% to the country’s GDP generating annual revenue of two hundred and eight (208) billion naira.

He also noted that Nigerian music sector, which produces over 550 albums annually, must be strengthened to aid the country’s economic growth.

In the motion, he had listed the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu (Burna Boy), David Adedeji Adeleke (Davido) and others as major actors in the Nigerian music industry who made and are making the country proud globally with their record-breaking feats.

The motion noted:

“At the global level, the late Afrobeat creator, Fela Anikulapo-kuti is perhaps the most iconic musician to have come out of Nigeria until recently when Damini Ebunolowa Ogulu(Burna Boy) a Nigerian singer and song writer won best international Act at the 2019 BET Awards and was also nominated for the best world music Album at 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. He also won Best International act at the 2021 BET Awards.

“Recently, top Nigerian Artist Davido’s album titled ‘Timeless’ has featured over 10 million user-generated playlists on Spotify. Also the album had over 12 million streams in 24 hours, this was the first time an album would achieve such a feat.”

Recall that Honourable Peller, who is the Ayedero of Yorubaland, is a major actor in the creative industry. Aside being the founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the famous nightclub, Club Quilox, he is also the founder and owner of Aquila Records, a music record label which had dropped many hits even before he ventured into politics.

Some of the hits include Ayepo by Airboy featuring Burnaboy, Slow whyne by Que Peller, Werey Re Rmx by Base One featuring Phyno and Olamide, Believe by Naomi Peller, Capable by Beezy, Oni Reason by Tillaman featuring Davido just to mention a few.

So, as a major stakeholder in the creative industry, Honourable Peller, who had on March 1, 2023, publicly congratulated Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his election victory as the country’s President-elect, urges him to strengthen the industry by giving it support in the areas of access to finance, skills and capacity development, infrastructure, intellectual property protection, royal control, development of creative clusters, international strategy among others.

Honourable Peller has always been an advocate, supporter and sponsor of youth-driven initiatives. Recall that through his NGO, Lead Generation Initiative (LGI), he has successfully trained more than one thousand, seven hundred (1700) young Nigerians on effective leadership skills, strategic communication, civic responsibility, active citizenship and nation building. Woman In Court For Breaking Leg Of IBEDC Staff Trying To Disconnect Her Home

A 34-year-old woman, Nosimot Alalade, was, on Friday, arraigned before an Abeokuta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Isabo for assaulting a staffer of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC, while on duty.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the defendant resides at No. 5, Amadiya Street, Olomore area of Abeokuta.

NAN also reports that the defendant is facing a three-count charge of assault, conducting herself in manner likely to cause breach of public peace and acting in a manner to endanger the life of the complainant.

The prosecutor, Insp. Olaide Rawlings, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on April 12 at about 1:00 p.m. at Olomore area of Abeokuta

Ms Rawlings said the defendant assaulted one Silas Olaleye by pushing him from a ladder while performing his lawful duty, which caused him permanent injury on his right leg.

She said that the complainant, who is an IBEDC staffer, and his team, were assigned to Olomore area for routine check of IBEDC bill and meters.

The prosecutor further stated that when the complainant and his team got to the defendant’s house, they asked for her bill and she could not produce it.

“In the process, the complainant was instructed by his team leader to disconnect the defendant’s light from the pole.

“When the complainant climbed the pole to disconnect the cable that carried light to the defendant’s house, she (defendant), out of anger, pushed the ladder which the complainant was mounting,” she said.

Ms Rawlings said that the complainant fell down from the ladder and sustained an open injury on his right leg.

She said the defendant also acted in manner which endangered the life of the complainant and also conducted herself in a manner likely to cause breach of public peace by pushing Olaleye while on lawful duty.

According to her, the offences contravene Sections 338, 343, 355 and 249 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The magistrate, M.O. Osinbajo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000, with one surety in like sum.

She, thereafter, adjourned the case till April 28 for trial.
