A federal High Court in Lagos has granted bail to Godwin Emefiele, suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in the sum of N20 million.
Recall, the ex-CBN Governor has been in the custody of Department for State Security, DSS for the past seven weeks.
In a ruling on Tuesday, Nicholas Oweibo, the presiding judge, said the charges against Emefiele are bailable.
The bail was granted with one surety.

The suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor arrived before lawyers arrived and is standing trial on a two-count charge of possessing a single-barrel shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371) without a licence.

No fewer than three students of Osun State College of Heath Technology, Ilesa have been shot by unknown gunmen.
It was learnt that the students were shot near a Barber’s shop at Amuta, a suburb near the main gate of the institution.
An eyewitness who spoke to ODUDUWA NEWS under the condition of anonymity claimed that, “the gunmen suspected to be members of the dreaded Eye Confraternity stormed the community and started shooting sporadically, and in the gun battle that dueled for several minutes three students of the school were shot.
It was confirmed to ODUDUWA NEWS, that the students have been hospitalized at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.
A pregnant woman, three children and 18 others were on Sunday evening, July 23, reportedly burnt to d£ath after a fuel-laden tanker exploaded at Ore, in Odigbo council area of Ondo state.
It was gathered that the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed. Shortly after it crashed, the victims stormed the scene to scoop its content.
ODUDUWA NEWS reports that the fire was ignited by a spark from a phone of the persons scooping fuel that spilled from the tank.
An eye witness account said that they were inside the church when the tanker fell and spilled its contents on the road.
The source who identified himself as Cyriacus said many persons rushed to scoop fuel from the tanker despite being warned by the pastor in the church.
Three children died and we have counted over 15 bodies. A pregnant woman that wanted to buy the fuel also died. The money is still with her.”.
Acting IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun on Sunday revealed that he had wanted to be the Lagos State Commissioner of Police two times in the course of his career, but was denied the opportunity.
The thanksgiving service was attended by Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State.
Also, present at the occasion were top echelon of the police, including the DIG in charge of Research and Planning, Frank Mba; former DIG Operations, Leye Oyebade (retd.); Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2, Ari Mohammed Ali.
Speaking at the thanksgiving service, Egbetokun recalled the intriguing and challenging moments that have characterized his career in the police, including close shaves with death during encounters with armed robbers and other dangerous criminals.
While recalling that he had many encounters with armed, dangerous criminals as a young officer, IGP Egbetokun particularly pointed out an encounter in 1992, during which, he said he escaped being killed by the grace of God.
“I recall the incident of November 4, 1992, when I had to engage in a shootout with armed robbers. It was just the grace of God that I wasn’t killed that day.
“I remember twice that I wanted to be Commissioner of Police in Lagos State and those two times I was denied. But today, I thank God.”
Egbetokun however said he was not appointed acting IG by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu because of his relationship with him.
Egbetokun said the President was not one who usually take sensitive decisions based on sentiments.
Rather, he said his appointment as acting IGP was another testimony to the greatness of God, as he was not expecting it.
Egbetokun said he was in the house of a friend watching television when the news of his appointment broke.
“I saw the breaking news. It can only be God. I know that this appointment is not because I am the most qualified or because I have a relationship with Mr. President,” said Egbetokun.
He also recalled that his best friend and lover to severed ties with him when he decided to join the police.
But he said he had to bail out the friend from police detention after he passed out from the Police Academy on October 12, 1991 and returned to Lagos on October 15.
Since then, he remains my good friend till today.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said Nigeria has failed the African continent specifically, and the world at large.
Obasanjo stated this in Abuja while giving the keynote address at the public presentation of the book titled, “Reclaiming the Jewel of Africa,” written by former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, who also served as Minister of Finance, Olusegun Aganga.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by his Special Adviser on Monetary Policy, Olawale Edun, unveiled the book.
Obasanjo said, “Over the last 63 years, we have not lived up to expectations. We have disappointed ourselves; we have disappointed Africa; we have disappointed the black race; and we have disappointed the world.”
He, however, added that “what Segun (Aganga) has tried to identify, itemise and recommend in his book is the way forward.
“But the beginning of charting a new course for ourselves is to admit our failure because we have not always put the round peg in the round hole.
“We are carried along by ego and emotion of self, selfishness and self-centeredness, ethnic and religious jingoism, with total lack of understanding of the world we live in and gross misunderstanding of what development entails and how to move fast and continuously on the trajectory of development.”
Obasanjo identified two of the major issues that were interrelated in terms of factors for all-round development.
“These are peace and security, which we cannot achieve without justice, equity and inclusive society. And telling ourselves the truth, we have not done well on these scores in the recent past — in the last decade and a half.
“I will also point at the issue of education, where over 20 million children that should be in school are not in school. We do not need an oracle to tell us the consequences of that for tomorrow,” Obasanjo said.
The former President said the skill acquisition, empowerment and employment of youth would seem to be ignored or not appreciated.

Obasanjo said, “We do not need to look far for the remote causes of banditry, Boko Haram, kidnapping and other organised crimes.
“We are living dangerously on a keg of gunpowder, driving more people into poverty through good policies poorly and thoughtlessly implemented or bad policy and no policy at all,” he added.
The operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a drug lord while giving a suspected recruited courier 93 cocaine wraps to swallow in a Lagos hotel. The agency also disclosed that it recovered 12.4 million pills of opioids, 6,921.5 kg.
The agency made this known in a statement posted on its official Twitter handle on Sunday and signed by its Director, Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi.
The statement in part said, “It was a rude shock to find a notorious drug kingpin who specialises in sponsoring young Nigerians to traffick Class A drugs to Europe especially Italy, when operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, stormed his hotel room in Okota area of Lagos late on Friday 21st July when he was preparing a recruited courier to swallow 93 pellets of cocaine meant for distribution in Italy.
“The 48-year-old drug kingpin, Charles Uwagbale, had recruited Uju Dominic, 35, from his base in Italy with a deal to come to Nigeria, ingest 100 pellets of cocaine on Friday 21st July and return to Italy on Saturday 22nd July. True to plan, upon the arrival in Nigeria, the mule was lodged in Golden Heaven Hotel located at Enoma Street off Ago-Palace Way, Okota, Isolo, Lagos where Uwagbale brought 93 wraps of the Class A drug for him to swallow at about 23:45 pm Friday night.
“They were in the process when NDLEA operatives who have been on their trail following credible intelligence stormed their hotel room, arrested both and recovered the drug exhibits with a total weight of 1.427 kilograms.
“Operatives of the Lagos State Command of the Agency who made the arrest and seizure had on Thursday 20th July raided Akala in Mushin area of the state where they recovered 37.5kg cannabis from the home of a fleeing suspect.
No fewer than 8 persons were trapped in a three-storey building that collapsed on 24th July 2023 following the heavy rainfall in Inalende area, Mokola, Ibadan, Oyo state.
Having noticed the evil incident, the residents of the community with the synergy of the operatives of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) quickly run to rescue the trapped residents.
Fortunately, no one is reported dead while the victims have been conveyed to the hospital for proper treatment.
Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde has announced Mrs Olanike Kudirat Adeyemo, a Professor at the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine, University of Ibadan, as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) designate.
The announcement was contained in a letter signed by the state governor.
Professor Adeyemo, who served as the Head of the Oyo State COVID-19 Decontamination and Containment team of the Oyo State COVID-19 Taskforce, was born on July 17, 1970.
She bagged the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.), Master’s degree in Veterinary Public Health (MVPH) and Ph.D. Veterinary Public Health, in 1994, 1998 and 2005 respectively from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
Professor Adeyemo, who is a COMSTECH Distinguished scholar and the Pioneer Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships) at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan between 2017 and 2021, joined the services of the university in March 1999 as Lecturer Grade II in the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine. She became Lecturer I in 2002, Senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor in 2005 and Reader/Associate Professor in 2008. In October 2011, she became a full Professor.
From August 2013 to July 2015, she was a Schlumberger Foundation-sponsored Visiting Scholar at the Center for Human and Environmental Toxicology, Department of Physiological sciences, University of Florida, Gainesville, USA.
Between March 13, 2017 and March 12, 2021, Professor Adeyemo served as the Pioneer Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships), University of Ibadan, Ibadan.
A 2013 Fellow of the College of Veterinary Surgeon, Nigeria and a Registered Veterinary Surgeon, Adeyemo is a Fellow of many academies, such as the International Science Council (ISC), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Pollution Mitigation, the Nigerian Academy of Science, the African Academy of Sciences and the African Scientific Institute (ASI), USA.
She is also a member of many learned societies, including Society of Toxicology (SOT), the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), the Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON), the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association (WAVMA) and the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSDW).
Professor Adeyemo’s scholarship and leadership are around “One Health” trans-disciplinary research that cuts across traditional boundaries and paradigms to create novel conceptual, methodological, and translational innovation at the environment-livestock-wildlife-human interface with significant policy implication for Nigeria, the African Continent, and the rest of the world.
She is the host PI on the project (2020-2023) titled “Improving Biosecurity: A Science-based Approach to Manage Fish Disease Risks and Increase the Socio-economic Contribution of the Nigerian Catfish and Tilapia Industries” in collaboration with colleagues at Mississippi State University, USA and WorldFish, Malaysia is facilitated by USAID grant under the Fish Innovation Lab for Fish. The project is aimed at improving Nigerian aquatic animal production biosecurity and health management.
An erudite scholar, she has many publications to her credit.
The Lagos State Government has urged the public to disregard rumours that mass funerals will be held for #EndSARS victims in 2020, claiming that those responsible for the memo are troublemakers.
The Lagos State government made this known in a statement signed by its Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye on its Twitter page on Sunday, stating that the victims to be buried are not from the Lekki Tollgate shooting.
The statement, which was titled RE: MASS BURIAL OF ENDSARS VICTIMS (MISCHIEF MAKERS AT WORK) said, “The attention of the Lagos State Government has been drawn to some social media publications about a purported mass burial plan for casualties of the 2020 #EndSARS incident. Peddlers of the news are deliberately misinterpreting and sensationalising a letter from the Lagos State Government Public Procurement Agency titled: Letter of No Objection — Mass Burial for the 103, the Year 2020 ENDSARS victims, to misinform the public, stir public sentiment and cause public disaffection against the Lagos State Government.
“While the Lagos State Government would not have dignified the mischievous elements peddling such news with a response, we consider it appropriate to set the records straight and draw the attention of well-meaning citizens to the antics of some unscrupulous elements who are hell-bent on disrupting the peace and tranquillity of Lagos with distorted news and half-truths about the PPA letter.
“It is public knowledge that the year 2020 #EndSARS crisis that snowballed into violence in many parts of Lagos recorded casualties in different areas of the State and NOT from the Lekki Toll Gate as being inferred in the mischievous publications.
“For the records, the Lagos State Environmental Health Unit (SEHMU) picked up bodies in the aftermath of #EndSARS violence and community clashes at Fagba, Ketu, Ikorodu, Orile, Ajegunle, Abule-Egba, Ikeja, Ojota, Ekoro, Ogba, Isolo and Ajah areas of Lagos State, including a jailbreak at Ikoyi Prison. The 103 casualties mentioned in the document were from these incidents and NOT from Lekki Toll-gate as alleged. For the avoidance of doubt, nobody was retrieved from the Lekki Toll Gate incident.
“In the aftermath of the #EndSARS violence, the office of the Chief Coroner invited members of the public Throughout public adverts and announcement who had lost loved ones or whose relatives had been declared missing between 19th and 27th October 2020 from various clashes as mentioned above, to contact the department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) to help with identification of these casualties deposited in State-owned mortuaries. Relatives were to undergo DNA tests for identification purposes. It is important to state categorically that nobody responded to claim any of the bodies.
“However, after almost three years, the bodies remain unclaimed, adding to the congestion of the mortuaries. This spurred the need to decongest the mortuaries, a procedure that follows very careful medical and legal guidelines in the event that a relative may still turn up to claim a lost relative years after the incident.
“Decongestion of our public morgues is a periodic and regular exercise approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to free up space in mortuaries that have a large number of unclaimed bodies.”
