There is no going back on actualization of Oduduwa Republic – Prof. Akintoye

The worldwide leader of the Ilana Omo Oodua, Prof Banji Akintoye has said there is no going back on the actualisation of the Oduduwa Republic.

Akintoye described the Yoruba as a civilised people who cannot continue with the barbarism of the suspected Fulani people that have held Nigeria to ransom, adding that only Ethiopia can be older than the Yoruba people in terms of civilisation.

The don revealed that the anticipated Oduduwa Republic will continue the civilisation agenda of the late Premier of the defunct Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowon.

Akintoye disclosed this during an interview on CityTalk with Reuben Abati, which was monitored by ODUDUWA NEWS on Saturday.

“There is no nation in tropical Africa that is older and also more civilised than the Yoruba nation, except perhaps Ethiopia.

“We are going to continue in the civilisation nation-building that has been for years which the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo wanted to continue in the 1950s. We cannot stay with Nigeria where Fulani have made the rest of us continue in barbarism.

“Yoruba is a civilised nation. When the white man came in the middle of 19th century and began to spread Christianity through education, our country was better ready to receive education than any tropical nation because for missionaries in any part of Africa, they had to station in the bush and start looking for people to educate. But our case was not like that in Yorubaland.

“In Yorubaland, you just go to Oba in the city and introduce yourself to say you have come. There’s a photograph of missionaries arriving in Oyo to greet Alaafin in 1883. It was a great picture, with a large number of people, and the Oba himself on the throne and the missionaries in front of him to greet him.”

The octogenarian historian stated that the Nigerian government has put Fulani people in key posts, especially in the security arms of the country, and they have constitutional powers to run most of the affairs of the country via exclusive control.

“Fulani play the dominating factor in every part of Nigeria. The constitution is helping them at the moment, and we have to go out of such a country. There is 98 control of power in the constitution and 68 out of them are under the federal government that is controlled by the Fulani.

“The remaining 30 are shared between the federal and states concurrently with the proviso that if the federal and state governments clash, the state government must surrender and the federal government must take precedence.

“We are going to liberate our people and have our civilised country. We cannot continue with a country where all major key posts are headed by the Fulani, and that wouldn’t have been an issue but the barbarism is too much. The police department, the army, the customs, the secret state services and the rest are headed by the Fulani.

“People are saying there will be war. Well, we are trying to not make war happen because we don’t want to brutalise anybody but if they make war happen, they will be sorry, that’s the situation.”

LASIEC to conduct free, fair council elections in Lagos State – Chairman

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), has reiterated its commitment to the conduct of credible, free and fair elections in the State, stressing that it is an impartial election management body consciously putting in place all the required machinery to achieve orderly elections.

Chairman, LASIEC, Justice Ayotunde Phillips, who made this disclosure at a three-day pre-election retreat organised for staffers at Ikeja, said the Commission will continue to build and sustain its integrity as an impartial body recognised for excellence in electoral administration and the sustenance of democracy.

The LASIEC boss said “the retreat, with the theme Electoral Integrity and Administration of Local Council Election, is essentially to review and evaluate our state of preparedness for the forthcoming Local Government elections, as the tenure of the elected Council officials in the State is gradually coming to an end”.

Speaking further, the Chairman disclosed that the retreat would be in two batches, noting that the current batch comprises of the top echelon of the Commission, while the second batch would have in attendance other senior staff.

This, she said, is to ensure that the Commission’s officials are in tune with the modern realities of election administration and conduct.

While emphasising LAISEC’s readiness for the election, Justice Phillips, said that the Commission has inspected and ascertained the functionality of its offices in each Local Government Council, stressing that those below expectation are urgently receiving attention.

She further disclosed that the Commission has also invested in staff training and election observation missions both at local and international level.

“Similarly, we are exploring a new approach to ensure the health and safety of voters and election personnel during the poll in line with the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic”, she noted.

Justice Phillips also disclosed that non-sensitive materials have already been dispatched to remote areas with difficult terrains for logistic purposes, adding that the Commission’s new uncluttered and user-friendly website will soon be unveiled to further boost communication between the Commission and its various publics.

While assuring that LAISEC will continue to build and sustain its integrity as an impartial body, Justice Phillips urged Lagosians to perform their civic rights during the Local Government election.

A facilitator, Mr. Sina Odugbemi, who spoke on “Voter Apathy: Evaluation of the roles of stakeholders”, opined that for a democratic system to function effectively all stakeholders must actively participate and collaborate in the electoral process.

He submitted that all stakeholders have constitutional, statutory, political and moral responsibility to drive the democratic process, which is why all of them must be carried along at all times to enhance full participation and bring about more credibility to the electoral process.

In the same vein, one of the facilitators, a retired Director, Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mrs. Toro Oladapo, attributed lack of trust in the system as one of the reasons for voters’ apathy.

While stating that the retreat will help in building the capacity of electoral officials, Oladapo urged the Commission to deploy all available media, especially the social media, to reach out to the voting public and also monitor how its activities are being reported,

Earlier, the Lead Facilitator and a former LASIEC Permanent Secretary, Mr. Adeyinka Jeje, urged the government to consider e-election as a tool in the electoral process.

Jeje noted that e-election would help reduce human interaction and encourage inclusive participation in the electoral process.

APC stakeholders meet in Ibadan, map out strategy to dislodge Makinde in 2023

The opposition party in oyo state, All progressives Congress converged in Idi-Ape Ibadan on thursday 21 January for a stakeholder meeting to map out strategy to reclaim the state in 2023.

The APC in Oyo state returned to opposition side after the 2019 general election that favored People’s Democratic Party’s candidate Engr. Seyi Makinde.

During the course of the meeting, strategic leaders of the party in the state tool rounds to bring ideas and express their readiness to work in harmony to return the party in 2023.

A communique issued at the end of the meeting, signed on behalf the Meeting Conveners and Communique Drafting Committee by Alhaji Adesina Alabi, reads:

“Conveners posited that the Meeting was the brainchild of some concerned members of Oyo APC who feel the need for Progressive family members across the eleven Local Government Areas of Ibadan Land to channel a new course and mobilize for unity, harmony and cooperation with a view to repositioning the Party.

“Conveners emphasized that the Meeting was not at the instance of individual, group or bloc of aspirants or those seeking to hijack the Party for selfish reasons. More so, efforts were made to reach out to all gladiators and prospective aspirants without any exception as they all pledged their support for the bold initiative.

“Conveners regretted the step taken by some faceless people to discredit the Meeting through sponsored noise in the mass media which was aimed at discouraging genuine members/delegates from attending the Meeting. However, stakeholders again appealed to those behind the futile call for boycott of the Meeting to have a rethink and join others to rebuild Oyo APC if they were genuine in their claims as members of the Party.

“Stakeholders at the Meeting were, therefore, unanimous in their call for more commitment, team spirit and love for one another among Party faithful as the 2023 general election beckons.
“At the Meeting, it was reported that Progressive elements from Ibarapa axis expressed their desire to be carried along in the efforts to reflect Ibadan Land/Ibarapa land Agenda for the APC.
“Stakeholders re-echoed the need for oneness and togetherness as this was considered very essential for the APC to bounce back and reclaim its lost glory and thus emerge stronger and more virile.

“Stakeholders welcomed briefing from the National Headquarters of the APC ahead of the forthcoming membership registration and revalidation exercise which the promised to accord all necessary support to ensure that a good population of existing and new members are captured in the exercise.

“Stakeholders lauded conveners for the efforts made towards strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols.

“Conveners expressed gratitude to eminent party leaders especially former governor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, who was represented at the Meeting by Chief Wale Ohu and also the State Caretaker Chairman, Chief Akin Oke,
“The Meeting adjourned for another day which Conveners promised to announce to the general public as soon as possible.”

Earlier, in his wecome address, the acting secretary of the party in the state, Hon. Mojeed Olaoya, explained that the stakeholders meeting became pertinent in a bid to address some of the issues that led to the loss of the party at the 2019 guber polls in the state.

He noted that it is important for the party to form a united front in the state.

Gov. Makinde blows hot on Igboho’s ‘vacation order’ to herdsmen, says trouble makers will be dealt with

…says the law will catch anyone who tries to disrupt peace in Oyo

Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, declared on Wednesday that his administration is determined to bring insecurity to its knees in the state by dealing decisively with troublemakers.

Governor Makinde, who made the declaration in a state-wide broadcast to residents of the state, aired on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), asked residents to come together and put the interest of Oyo State first in the fight against insecurity.

He maintained that the collective efforts of all residents of the state is the only way to continue to keep the peace and sustain the secure environment, which he said, has contributed to the growth of the state’s economy in the past.

The governor added that his administration is taking all necessary steps to protect the people from harassment, thuggery, cultism and banditry, noting that the state “has the situation under control.”

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, further indicated that Governor Makinde promised to deal with anyone disrupting the peace of the state.

This is coming a few days after a police report indicated that the rate of armed robbery incidents in the state reduced by more that 32 per cent in 2020, compared to the previous year 2019.

The state government has also expressed its determination to stamp out brigandage, kidnapping and other violent crimes.

According to the governor, the state has a common enemy in hoodlums, bandits and kidnappers, who, he said, have been fomenting troubles in the state.

He noted that the enemies of Oyo State are neither the Hausa-Fulani pastoralists, who are looking for pasture for their flock nor the farmers, who are seeking to produce food for human consumption.

He warned individuals going about issuing ultimatum to Fulani residents of the state to desist from such acts, declaring that as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, he, as governor, would protect every Nigerian’s rights to reside in any part of the country.

Governor Makinde told individuals or groups planning to take actions that would lead to the forcible removal of anyone from the state to desist from such line of action, noting that anyone who fails to abide by his directive will face the full wrath of the law.

Governor Makinde warned residents of the state against taking judgement into their hands, adding that there are bodies constitutionally empowered to arrest and prosecute criminals.

He said that the responsibility of residents is to help the security agencies identify the enemies of the people.

The governor equally acknowledged the efforts of some officers of the Nigeria Police Force who, according to him, have resumed their constitutional duties of maintaining law and order in the state, even as he encouraged the leadership of the Police to continue to collaborate with his administration to secure the state.

He said: “The past few weeks’ events have made it imperative that I address issues that have to do with the internal security of our dear state.

“We cannot overlook the fact that there have indeed been instances that cause concern. The fragile peace between the herdsmen and farmers in Oke Ogun is being threatened. “Individuals who are not authorised are going around chasing people from their homes and causing mayhem. This assault on residents of Oyo State is not the way to further the Yoruba cause.

“Let me state that we shall not sit back and watch anyone make any law-abiding resident of Oyo State feel unsafe in their homes, farms, or business places. We are aware of some people circulating flyers and giving people ultimatums to leave their land. This is totally unacceptable and will not be condoned.

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), which I swore to defend and protect, guarantees freedom of movement in Section 41(1), such that citizens are free to reside in any part of the country without fear. We are determined to preserve that right in Oyo State.”

The governor, who called on local government chairpersons, traditional rulers and other sectors of the state to work with the security agencies to secure the state and ensure maximum peace said: “All Local Government and Local Council Development Area Chairpersons are directed to work with the traditional rulers and the officers of the security agencies to ensure that peace is maintained in all parts of the state.

“Let me also use this medium to speak to our traditional rulers. They must not be part of any plans to disrupt the peaceful coexistence of residents of Oyo State.

“I must reiterate that we will not hesitate to take appropriate action against any individuals who try to disrupt the peace in Oyo State. Our administration is taking all necessary steps to protect the good people of Oyo State from harassment, thuggery and banditry. We believe we have the situation under control.

“It is time for us to come together and put the interests of our state first. We have a common enemy. That enemy is not the Hausa- Fulani who is looking for pasture for his flock. It is not the farmer who just wants to grow food to sell in the market or to feed his family. Our enemies are the hoodlums, cultists, armed robbers, kidnappers and bandits. These people live among us.

“With our collective efforts, we can continue to keep the peace in Oyo State. Together, we can preserve the secure environment that has contributed to the growth of our economy.”

Irony of Southwest PDP and endless journey from one crisis to another

If there is any zone in Nigeria where the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been struggling to get its acts together, it must be Southwest. Although, the party has never had it so good in the geopolitical zone even during the President Olusegun Obasanjo dispensation, things went awry after the prolonged leadership squabble between Senators Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff.
In most states of the federation, the crisis split the party structure, but Southwest has continued to reel from instability and crisis, especially in Lagos State, where PDP has never produced the governor.

For instance, when former governor Akinwunmi Amboode conducted council elections in 2016, the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) was confused as to which of the PDP factions was the authentic structure to deal with.

Back then, Mr. Segun Adewale, a loyalist of Modu-Sheriff, and Makarfi camp’s Captain Tunji Shelle-led executive conducted parallel primaries to select candidates for the election. At a point, Shelle was forced to adopt the Labour Party (LP) as platform for the council polls, pending the determination of the leadership tussle by the Supreme Court.

In Ogun State chapter, the former executive, led by Adebayo Dayo, aligned with Makarfi, while Sikirulahi Ogundele’s executive recognised Modu-Sheriff, just as in Ondo the crisis cost the party the 2016 governorship, despite being the incumbent party.

The Osun and Ekiti chapters were not left out. Former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose, could not install a successor in the 2018 governorship poll due to internal fighting in the party. A former National Publicity Secretary of PDP Caretaker Committee, Mr. Dayo Adeyeye, Senator Biodun Olujimi and others disagreed with Fayose over his choice of Professor Kolapo Eleka, his then deputy, as the party’s candidate. Adeyeye eventually defected to APC where he later contested the 2019 Senatorial seat for Ekiti South against Olujimi of PDP and won. However, the court later reversed Adeyeye’s victory in favour of Olujimi. Adeyeye subsequently worked against PDP, which gave APC the opportunity to reclaim Ekiti.

The PDP has been unable to return to Government House in Osun after Aregbesola’s eight years. That opportunity was lost due to internal strife that led to Iyiola Omisore dumping the party and supporting the candidate of APC, Gboyega Oyetola in a re-run.

After the Supreme Court ruled in favour of Makarfi on July 12, 2017, the Southwest zone exploded in another crisis. As a result, the zone could not settle for a consensus candidate in the December 2017 national convention for the national chairmanship. None of the over eight aspirants agreed to step-down to brighten the zone’s chances.

Chairmanship aspirants included former Deputy National Chairman, Chief Olabode George, a former Minister of Education, Professor Tunde Adeniran, 2015 governorship candidate in Lagos, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, a stalwart of the party from Oyo State, Professor Taoreed Adedoja, and former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.

The many aspirants paved the way for South-South zone, which presented only Prince Uche Secondus. Fayose, the late Senator Buruji Kashamu, former Deputy National Vice Chairman, Southwest zone, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, and others were later accused of betraying the zone.

Fayose was accused of scuttling Southwest’s moves to occupy the position of national chairman in the bid to become a presidential running mate to whomever the party would present for the 2019 presidential election. Pained by the development, Adeniran crossed over to SDP, while Adedoja joined APC.

Between Fayose, Makinde
DEFEATED variously in Ondo in 2016, Ekiti and Osun in 2018 to APC, PDP lost control of the entire Southwest until 2019. Governor Seyi Makinde had entered into a working arrangement with other political platforms and capitalised on the infighting in Oyo APC under ex-Governor Abiola Ajimobi to clinch the state for PDP.

Similar opportunities came calling for PDP in Lagos and Ogun during the 2019 election. The APC leadership in Lagos denied Governor Ambode a second term opportunity, while former Governor Ibikunle Amosun sponsored another candidate against APC’s Prince Dapo Abiodun. But PDP failed to take advantage of those chances owing to internal crises.

The clash between former Governor Daniel and Senator Kashamu worked to the benefit of APC. Again, soon after Makinde mounted the saddle in Oyo, the battle for Southwest leadership of PDP pitted him against Fayose, thereby factionalising the party. While a faction believes that Makinde as the most senior elected official officer in the zone, should lead PDP, Fayose’s supporters insist that a first term governor cannot claim leadership over the two-term former governor.

PDP’s relative poor performance in the 2020 Ondo State governorship poll could be traced to the wrangling between Makinde and Fayose. The same pitfall was also noticeable in the last Lagos East bye-elections.

The Makinde versus Fayose face-off also spurred verbal attacks between Ekiti and Oyo chapters. In Ondo, the party suspended five of its members for attending a function at the instance of Fayose, although a reconciliation committee reversed the suspension.

In a statement, the Fayose faction alluded to Makinde’s erstwhile membership of SDP and remarked: “It is rather unfortunate that someone like Governor Makinde, who is never a stable member of PDP, could use the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) trial to mock Fayose.”

The party’s Publicity Secretary in Oyo, Akeem Olatunji, criticised Raphael Adeyanju’s statement, saying it does not reflect the true position of Ekiti PDP.

Olatunji said: “It is very regrettable that we are compelled, as the ruling party in Oyo State, to react to a reckless and unguarded statement credited to Ayo Fayose-led faction of our great party in Ekiti State. For the sake of record, we like to state clearly that it is unfortunate that the only time Ekiti State PDP was allowed by Fayose to enjoy relative peace was when the ex-governor was in office, first, between 29th of May 2003 to 16th October 2006.

“In 2011, Fayose, who abandoned PDP in pursuit of his failed senatorial ambition in Labour Party (LP), openly told the whole world about the secret accord he reached with the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the then governor Kayode Fayemi against PDP, when Fayose publicly told Fayemi to honour their secret agreement.

“We are not unmindful of Fayose’s political antecedents, which is legendary for treachery and betrayal, because once Fayose is not the governor, he deploys his entire political arsenal to bring down the PDP.”

Olatunji also accused the former Ekiti governor of aligning with the national leader of APC, Bola Tinubu, despite everything he gained from PDP in the past, stressing, “We understand that since Fayose had completed his second term of office as governor, and realising that he cannot contest the seat again, and worst still, since he stands no chance to represent our great party on a presidential slot, he has gone into another secret agreement with his old political allies, especially in Lagos towards an empty 2023 presidential aspiration.”

But, in a reaction, Fayose’s spokesman, Mr. Lere Olayinka, said the problem in Southwest PDP is all about power, which is normal in politics. He said the major problem is that some people were trying to smuggle in something alien to PDP constitution.

He stated: “There is nothing like leadership in our constitution. Leadership comes by concession. That Makinde is a governor does not confer on him the leadership right of the region; it only comes by concession. For instance, Fayose was instrumental to Makinde getting the PDP’s governorship ticket in Oyo in 2019. As at 2007, Makinde was a member of All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2007 till 2011. The governor defected to PDP in 2015 to contest the governorship ticket, but failed. The party begged him to take a Senatorial ticket, but he refused and left to contest the 2015 governorship election under SDP and lost.

“In 2019, Makinde returned to PDP and it was this same Fayose, who supported him to get the party’s ticket, when everybody, including the national headquarters, deserted him. I don’t see how Makinde would have outplayed the likes of former Governor Rasheed Ladoja and other stakeholders if Fayose and Olafeso did not tag along with him. How then would Makinde stand before Fayose to claim he is the leader? The truth is that Makinde has not been a consistent member of PDP.”

Olayinka also accused Makinde of supporting Senator Abiodun Olujimi against Fayose in Ekiti.

“In the last governorship election in Ondo, Makinde supported Eyitayo Jegede while Governor Nyesom Wike and the NWC preferred Agboola Ajayi, because they considered Jegede a liability, since he lost to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu four years ago. Fayose on his part supported Olafeso despite the fact he (Fayose) knew that Olafeso would not win.

“After Jegede won the ticket in Ondo, Makinde, rather than bringing everybody on board, started boasting that though they considered him a ‘baby governor’, his preferred candidate defeated others. That was part of the reasons PDP lost the election, because Wike, Fayose and even the NWC were lackadaisical due to the attitude of Makinde.”

Olayinka disclosed that Makinde suggested that the zone should retain the last zonal executive, led by Olafeso, when its tenure ended last year, adding, “In 2016, when the Olafeso-led executive was elected, Kashamu went to secure a court judgment that rendered Olafeso’s executive non-functional until 2018 when the court reversed itself in favour of Olafeso.

“In 2020, it was Makinde who suggested that Olafeso should stay since his executive only functioned for two years. Everybody including Fayose agreed to the suggestion, only for him to make a U-turn to say Hosea Agbola, who just joined the PDP, should be supported for the zonal vice national chairmanship instead of Olafeso. The same Makinde allotted the zonal secretary position to Chief Bode George’s preferred candidate in Lagos. How do you expect Fayose to fold his arms and allow such a situation unchallenged?”

He accused Makinde of intruding into affairs of other state chapters in the zone outside Oyo. Dismissing allegations that Fayose was working for Tinubu and APC as unserious, Olayinka added: “Fayose is the most consistent member of PDP in the Southwest and he has contributed immensely, more than anybody. When he was given soft-landing after his tenure in 2018 so that EFCC would not probe him, the former governor refused and on the third day of exiting office, he went straight to the commission’s office for the probe.”

On the Lagos East bye-election, he said the rift between Fayose and Makinde had nothing to do with it. “There is no way PDP could have won the bye-elections against the ruling party in Lagos, whether Fayose and Makinde were in agreement or not.”

Mr. Adetokunbo Pearse, the director general of Mr. Babatunde Gbadamosi Lagos East Election Campaign Organisation for the bye-election disagreed with Olayinka, even as he blamed Fayose for creating crisis in the zone and accused Olafeso of playing double standards. “Looking at the antecedents of Olafeso, no right thinking person in the zone would venture to support him. Makinde has been wonderful,” he said.

Olafeso’s imprints
AS a former deputy national vice chairman, Olafeso is seen as a significant part of the issues in Southwest PDP. Before the party’s 2017 national convention, Olafeso had romanced Chief George, with the hope of supporting the aspiration of the former Ondo State Military Administrator for the national chairmanship position. Olafeso and Kashamu tacitly endorsed George’s aspiration, but Fayose wasn’t keen on it. Olafeso used his relationship with George to bring Kashamu close. The newfound amity between Olafeso, George and Kashamu was ostensibly in the expectation that they would bring other Southwest stakeholders and across the country to support George’s ambition.

Surprisingly, however, few months to the national convention, Olafeso, who had attended the inaugural campaign of Chief George at Lagos City Hall, suddenly switched camp with Fayose to pitch tent with Governor Wike, who was supporting Secondus. George was miffed, but there was nothing he could do when even Agbaje, whom he (George) nurtured in Lagos against Musiliu Obanikoro, indicated interest in the national chairmanship.

Olafeso and Fayose were accused of betraying other Southwest chairmanship aspirants after Secondus had won. Fayose was accused of nursing a running mate ambition, which had been zoned to the Southeast, just as Olafeso allegedly dumped George and other aspirants from the region for some gestures supposedly from Wike at the convention.

Olafeso’s ambition to contest for Southwest national vice chairmanship in the forthcoming convention is said to be stoking another crisis. Makinde and Fayose had initially agreed to support Olafeso to compensate his (Olafeso) defeat in the last Ondo State governorship primary. But, Makinde is said to be considering Hosea Agboola, to Fayose’s chagrin.

Recently, it was widely circulated in the zone that Olafeso had been endorsed, as its sole candidate for the post of national deputy chairman of Southwest. But the chairman of PDP Reconciliation Committee in the zone, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, quickly debunked the story, saying nothing like that happened or is in consideration.

Oyinlola’s reaction was a response to a report that Oyinlola, Fayose and others had adopted Olafeso as the next Southwest National Vice Chairman of the party. In a personal message, Oyinlola wrote that: “There was no affirmation of anybody at the meeting, affirmation of any kind was never part of our mandate.”

It would be recalled that the issue of Olafeso re-presenting himself for the position alongside his Secretary, Reverend Bunmi Jenyo, is the reason for a major crisis between Fayose and Makinde.

But while speaking with The Guardian via the telephone, Olafeso said the fact that he contested the Ondo PDP governorship primary ticket and lost should not exclude him from aspiring for an executive position in the zone. He also debunked having issues with anybody in the party or zone.

“We are all working towards the same goal, to reposition our party for the next general elections,” he said. “I’m very close to Makinde and Fayose. The former governor of Ekiti and I supported Makinde to win the Oyo State governorship ticket in 2019. The issue between them is not about ego or tussle for power. What Fayoose is saying is that because Makinde is a governor in Oyo does not confer on him automatic leader of Southwest. I’m appealing to the media to help the party to resolve its crisis.”

One of the reasons some major stakeholders of the party are miffed with Olafeso’s ambition is due to the role he played against his zone (Southwest) at the party’s 2017 regards to national convention held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Olafeso denied that he jettisoned his zone for money at the national convention.

Meanwhile, the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Mr. Kola Ologbodiyan told The Guardian that the NWC was doing everything possible to ensure that peace returns to the Southwest zone, because it is key to the party’s success in the coming election.

According to Ologbondiyan; “We have set up the Bukola Saraki National Reconciliation Committee and I want to assure our party faithful that the committee will address all the issues affecting our party in the Southwest region.”

LAUTECH ownership: Oyo to pay N8 billion to Osun in 3 years as asset sharing agreement

…approves N92 million for tribrid system of power supply to RCDC, Awe

…as govt launches Keke Seyi within state secretariat

As a follow-up to the agreement reached between Oyo and Osun state governments on the ownership of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), the Oyo state government, on Tuesday, approved the payment of the sum of N8 billion to Osun State government as an asset sharing agreement.

The approval, which was conveyed by the Commissioner for Education, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye, would be paid in three installments spread over a period of three years.

A statement by Mr. Taiwo Adisa, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, indicated that Olaleye stated this while briefing newsmen shortly after the Executive Council meeting held at the Governor’s Office, saying: “As a follow-up to the agreement reached with the Osun State government on the issue of sole ownership of LAUTECH, the Executive Council of Oyo State approved today the payment of the sum of N8 billion to Osun State government. It will be paid over a period of three years.

“The breakdown of the payment goes as follows: one (1) billion Naira will be paid in January 2021 and another one (1) billion Naira will be paid in December 2021. Three (3) billion Naira will be paid in 2022 and the last three (3) will be paid in 2023. This was the decision of the council today.”

Similarly, the Executive Council also approved provision of a tribrid system of power supply consisting of solar, diesel generating set and battery storage for Rural Community Development Centre (RCDC), Awe as an urgent intervention at the sum of N92 million only.

According to the state’s Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Barr. Temilolu ‘Seun Ashamu, the Council resolved to make the intervention on the Rural Community Development Centre, Awe, which is one of the hubs of the state’s Agribusiness development programme.

He said: “At the Exco meeting today, the Council resolved that the Ministry of Energy and Resources will provide an urgent intervention at the Rural Community Development Centre RCDC Awe, which is actually one of the hubs for the agribusiness development of this administration.

“It resolved that the ministry will provide a tribrid system comprising solar, diesel generating set and battery storage for RCDC.”

He also said that the council approved the launch of a bike sharing scheme codenamed Keke Seyi to facilitate easy transportation within the state secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

The scheme, which is to involve the use of 60 bicycles is being piloted by an indigenous company which will be paid the sum of N750,000 for its services.

He said that the bike-sharing scheme within the Secretariat will be available for use by members of the public and staff of the state.

Ashamu said: “Secondly, the Council approved the implementation of bicycle drive codenamed ‘keke Seyi.’ The bicycles will be piloted in collaboration with OurBikes Nigeria, an indigenous company, which has offered the state its services to come and pilot a bike-sharing scheme within the Secretariat so that the bicycles will be available for use by members of the public and staff of the state.

“About N92 million was approved for the RCDC and that of Keke Seyi is a token amount of N750,000. They (Ourbike Nigeria) will be providing us with 60 bicycles for the pilot, which is to last for three months initially.

“We have members of the public that come into the Secretariat and they walk around. So, the bicycles are there to promote a number of things; ease of traffic within the secretariat and to promote healthy living.

“It is a bike-sharing scheme and what that means is that you can actually enter the Secretariat from any of the entrances, pick any of the bicycles and ride it to wherever you are going. The bicycles will also be made available to Ministries, Department and Agencies so that members of staff can also use the bicycles.

“It is necessary to state that there are protocols and procedures that guide the use of bicycles. It has been in Europe and North America long before it was brought to Africa. We will ensure that all health and safety measures are put in place such that we would not accelerate the spread of coronavirus.”

Gov. Makinde donates N2 Million to launch emblem for Armed Forces Remembrance Day

…urges Nigerians to cater for families of fallen heroes

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on Wednesday, urged all Nigerians to continue to cater to the needs of soldiers who were maimed in the line of duty to the country and the children, widows and other dependents of fallen heroes.

The governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Rauf Olaniyan, stated this at the launching of the Appeal Week Emblem for the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration, held at the House of Chiefs, Parliament Building, Secretariat, Ibadan.

A statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted Makinde as saying that the day was meant to honour fallen heroes and sensitize the public on the need to cater to the welfare of veterans who are still alive as well as families of the fallen heroes/heroines.

He said: “I am highly delighted to welcome everyone to the formal launch of the Emblem Appeal Week, which unfolds the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration in Oyo State.

“It is pertinent to note that the Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration emerged out of the need to honour our fallen heroes who laid down their lives in service to humanity during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigeria Civil War, Peace Support and Internal Security Operations.

“The occasion is also designed to honour and sensitize the public on the need to attend to the welfare of veterans who are still alive as well as families of the fallen heroes/heroines. From history, indeed, they have done wonderfully well and some nuggets of gold they left behind would surely lead our nation to a better future.”

The governor, while announcing the donation of the sum of N2 million to launch 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration Emblem, appealed to corporate organisations, industrialists, commercial firms, philanthropists and all individuals to donate generously to the Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem Appeal Week Fund.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I hereby launch the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem and other activities with a sum of N2 Million to the glory of God and enablement of better life for our ex-servicemen, veterans and dependants of those who paid the supreme price for the unity and progress of our nation.”

He said the donations would support ex-servicemen and women with disabilities and those who are now under-privileged, adding that it was noteworthy that collective efforts should be made to consciously care for the needs of maimed soldiers, their widows, their children and other dependents.

Governor Makinde charged the members of the Nigerian Legion to take advantage of the various schemes of the Federal, State and Local Governments, Non-Governmental Organisation as well as interventions from philanthropists to make lives better for them.

”I strongly believe that the Nigerian Legion, Oyo State Chapter, would continue with various relief packages designed to make Legionnaires, widows and their dependents self-sustaining, thereby reducing poverty.

“Their efforts are commendable. However, members of the Nigerian Legion should take advantage of the various schemes of the Federal, State and Local Governments Non-Governmental Organizations as well as philanthropists to make lives better for its members.

“I wish to reassure you that the Oyo State government will continue to support the activities of the Nigerian Legion, especially those self-sustaining projects to enhance the lives of the dependants of the fallen heroes.”

Earlier, the Oyo State Chairman, Nigerian Legion, Mr. Michael Fajimi, said that the main focus of the programme was to raise fund in order to cater to the needs of veterans, who are still alive but incapacitated or living in despair and the children and widows of the departed heroes.

He assured that the Nigerian Legion will continue to give full support to the government in securing the lives and properties of the citizens and residents of the state.

Fajinmi, who commended the Makinde administration for its commitment to improving the security of the state, said members of the Legion would give their support to the Oyo State Security Network Agency also known as Amotekun.

Oyo Govt debunks rumour of robbery incident in Oyo’s SSG office

The government of Oyo State has clarified as Fake News, a report circulated online by Mega Icon News and Sahara Reporters, which indicated that the office of the Secretary to the State Government was burgled last week.

The government equally insisted that newsmen must always seek clarifications from requisite authorities to avoid the allure of Fake News.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, stated on Saturday that there was no iota of truth to the claim in the story.

Checks with all arms of security at the secretariat confirmed that the story was fake, unfounded and indeed an outright lie, the statement said.

“Indeed, the original publisher of the story, Mega Icon, was so mischievous that he didn’t crosscheck the purported story with any government official. He only added a line debunking the story after an official of the SSG had questioned the veracity of the fake report.

“He had claimed to an official of the government that he had to publish the fake news because he was once shunned by officials of the Ministry of Agriculture.

“Surprisingly, Sahara Reporters lapped up the Fake News, an indication that the integrity of the media houses is at stake.

“The story not only failed the simplest tests that news men worth their onion subject news stories to, it raised all the red flags of Fake News, as it claimed that no arrest had been made without stating which police station the alleged burglary was reported to and by whom.

“The Fake News had also gone ahead to state that imaginary valuables were carted away without stating what and what was stolen. Sadly, the purveyors of the Fake News have also let down their readers by not being able to provide further details days after publishing the initial lie.”

The government warned media men to always ensure professionalism in the discharge of their duties, stating that responsible and ethical journalism espouses truth and the sanctity of facts above fiction.

It added that anyone who deliberately publicises fake and concocted stories would be made to face the wrath of the law, as there are constitutional stipulations that guide against publication of falsehood.

“We find it appalling that a media house worth its name would publish a story that has no basis and is not in any way close to reality.

“In fact, we can no longer doubt the fact that the purveyors of this Fake News are out to blackmail the government in an attempt to rubbish the initiatives of the administration in the security sector.

“We want to, however, state categorically that the state will ensure no offender goes unpunished, as there are constitutional provisions against the publication of falsehood by the press despite the fundamental freedom of expression, because the administration can no longer condone the excesses of the Fake News carriers.”

APC will fulfill its campaign promises – Lagos Speaker

Mr Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of Lagos State Assembly has vowed that the All Progressives Congress APC will do its best to ensure that Lagosians enjoy dividends of democracy.

According to a statement titled ‘We’ll Sustain Growth, Unity in Lagos APC – Obasa,’ the speaker made the promise when he received the APC Women in Barracks (Lagos West branch) who paid him an end-of-year visit.

The women, led by Mrs. V. Ayadi, from Ikeja Cantonment, and Sunny Orbunde, a youth leader, had sought for more recognition beyond elections, as well as jobs for their wards.

Obasa, in his response, urged the APC women to consider whatever they do as being in the interest and for the success of the party. He also promised to inform Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu that the group existed within the APC.

He was quoted as saying, “I am sure everyone has a willingness to be good and do good, but sometimes, challenges that we do not see or envisage do not give us the opportunity to meet our overall desires. But we will continue to do the best we can, reach out to as many people as we humanly can and ensure that Lagosians enjoy democratic dividends.

“As a party, we will make sure we do everything to appease you (APC women) and work to make sure we deliver the dividends of democracy. So, you just have to bear with us and endure. You are working for the party and we know your importance.

“Since this relationship has been established, I know we may not be able to meet all the time, but once in a while, we would. You can always invite us to join your activities and if you have important information and ideas to share with us, please do not hesitate.”

On employment, the speaker noted that the government could not provide all the jobs needed by residents of the state.

He, however, noted that the government has a duty to provide the environment for jobs and urged parents to encourage their wards to equip themselves with alternatives in the form of trades and vocations.

According to him, the skills will make them hard-working, self-sufficient and less drawn to white-collar jobs, which had no guarantee.
