Viral Video: LUTH Medical Doctors Fault Stella’s Claim on Hydroxychloroquine COVID-19 Cure

The Lagos Teaching Hospital LUTH Medical Directors has expressed shock over the trending video of Dr. Stella Immanuel, a medical doctor in the United States of America, who claimed that a combination of Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), Zinc and Zithromax could cure coronavirus.

In a statement yesterday signed by the president of the Guild, Prof. Olufemi Emmanuel Babalola, the medical directors said the video had been shared all over the country and led to many people justifiably asking the question of what doctors think about it.

Olufemi stated that it was important for people to understand it was just Immanuel’s personal opinion, which has no scientific backing and could simply be regarded as “unsubstantiated claims”.

In the video that has gone viral, Dr. Immanuel claimed to have treated over 350 patients in her clinic in Houston, Texas, with the combination of Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), Zinc and Zithromax.

But Olufemi said “people must understand that this is not scientific evidence and just her own personal, unsubstantiated claims.”

He stated that although some studies had suggested that Hydrochloroquine was effective, while others had come to the opposite conclusion, hence the need for a medical research that had started.

“As we speak, a study is underway in the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) on its efficacy and safety. Subsequently, a meta-analysis of all these studies should be undertaken to pool all the results and come up with a summative analysis which will guide clinicians,” Olufemi said.

He submitted that until all these have been done, all anecdotal claims such as the one by Immanuel must be taken with a pinch of salt.

Covid-19: Osun cancels Eid prayers, okays Juma’at service in mosques

The Government of the State of Osun has cancelled the congregational Eid-ul-adha (Sallah) prayers across the State ahead of the July 31 festivities.

It however added that the regular Friday Juma’at service will hold in line with the existing safety protocols and guidelines put in place by the State government.

A statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Wole Oyebamiji on Tuesday, disclosed that the cancellation of the Eid prayer was necessitated by the continuous rise of COVID-19 cases in the State, which he said had escalated into a community transmission stage.

Oyebamiji further said “Having appraised how the state is currently faring with respect to the global health emergency, vis-a-vis the fact that Eid-el- Kabir and Juma’at fall on the same day, there would be no Eid congregation or prayers on Friday, July 31. However, Juma’at service will hold in line with the existing safety protocols and guidelines.

“Osun is still recording rising figures of confirmed COVID-19 cases amidst an active community transmission stage of the pandemic. This coupled with the fact that people whose COVID-19 status has not been ascertained would be travelling into the State from different parts of the country, in the spirit of the celebration.

“Our health managers are also worried by the recent surge in active cases, and have warned that the State could experience galloping figures due to continued disobedience of safety protocols if it allows any kind of specially high density gatherings or congregation. And the State cannot afford the impact of any form of large gathering such as the kind expected at praying grounds and the associated difficulties of enforcing the safety protocols against COVID-19.

“Therefore, the State Government does not want its citizens exposed to this dangerous infection, especially among the aged and those with underlying health conditions”, he added.

The SSG while wishing all Muslim faithful a happy Eid-el-Kabir celebration ahead on behalf of the Governor, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola and the government, assured that the State Government “is not relenting in its fight to curtail the spread of the coronavirus, and to rid the State of it. General Adeniyi Must Not Die in Custody – Yoruba Elders Warn

Yoruba elders under the platform of the Yoruba Summit Group at a meeting earlier held today lamented that real culprits of the crime against the Nigerian people and nation were allowed to go scot free.

Thé leaders expressly demanded that Adeniyi must be safe in custody with no harm happening to him.

The group said, “The Yorùbá nation notes with sadness that on the very day our daughter Tolulope went home, a senior military officer, Major General Olusegun Adeniyi, was court-martialled for daring to voice out the lack of tools and equipment needed to prosecute a Boko Haram war that has become far too prolonged and far too controversial in light of the numerous calls to the Federal Government to change the service chiefs who have failed to provide the highest quality of security, leadership and delivery of forthrightness in their duties.

“We the Yorùbá condemn in strong terms the cherry-picking of our fighters, soldiers, officers as either cannon fodders easy-targets, operational fall-guys and being used for experimental disciplinary measures whilst the real culprits go free!

“Critical to this development are also pieces of news items of friendly fire from soldiers of a particular part of the country using their guns on our fighters who dare carry the battle deep into the Boko Haram held territories.”

The leaders are also demanding for a full scale investigation into the death of Tolulope Arotile.

They posited that there was more to her death that have to be unraveled.
