Ooni calls Jimoh Aliu hero of Yoruba culture, says his death is a blow to Nigerian theatre industry

The Arole Oduduwa & Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, has described the death of the veteran nollywood giant, Pa Jimoh Aliu as a passage of one of Yoruba’s greatest heroes of culture and traditions, saying his death has dealt a blow to the theatre and film industry in Nigeria.

Ooni Ogunwusi, the Spiritual leader of the Oodua race worldwide in a statement by his Director of Media and Public Affairs, Comrade Moses Olafare, described the late actor, producer and entertainer as a unique promoter of the prestigious Yoruba culture which he projected through his several works during his lifetime.

“Like the late Hubbert Ogunde among other Yoruba’s cultural heroes, the whole world particularly the descendants of Oduduwa will never forget ‘Arelu’; one of Pa Aliu’s epical movies through which this great man taught countless moral lessons.

“Aside from being a movie maker, pa Jimoh Aliu during his lifetime was very close to the ancient throne of Oduduwa through which he played several active roles particularly by adding glamor and indeed colour to our festivals and other social activities.

“His return to his creator at 85 is a unique reminder that death remains a unique feature of all men and no matter how good or badly spent a life is, it must end.” A part of the statement read.

The Co-chairman, National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria(NCTRN) with Nigerian Theatre industry, Ekiti State, Oodua race and all members of of the deseased icon of cultural development praying the Almighty Olodumare will give them the fortitude to bear the loss the death of Chief Jimoh Aliu has caused.

Oduduwa Republic: Stop deceiving Nigerians, MURIC tells Yoruba separatists

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has told the protagonists of the proposed Oduduwa Republic to stop using fake Islamic organisations to camouflage as Muslims. The human rights organization urged Nigerians to be wary of fake Islamic groups masquerading as genuine and declaring support for the secessionists.

This was revealed by the Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, in a press statement issued on Wednesday, 23rd September, 2020.

“The protagonists of the proposed Oduduwa Republic are desperate. Their desperation has reached a crescendo where they have resorted to dishonourable actions. This should jog the conscience of honest Nigerians. There is nothing wrong to have differences and disagreements. It is also normal to have ambition. But what is abnormal and ignoble is to pursue your ambition by hook or crook.

“Those in the irredentist Oduduwa Republic camp have descended so low that they use fake Muslim names and counterfeit Islamic organisations to issue statements in order to confuse Nigerians. Their plan is to deceive Nigerians and the rest of the world into believing that Yoruba Muslims are with them in their secession bid. This is not politics. It is outright dishonesty. It is not only cowardly, but ignoble, despicable and condescending. It should be condemned by all men and women of honour.

“Those behind it should be ashamed of themselves and those still supporting them should realize by now that they are being led by the nose. We urge Nigerians and the outside world to wake up to the antics of shenanigans masquerading as leaders of Yoruba self-determination groups. Yorubas are known to have great qualities of honesty and transparency. That is why the average Yoruba man, based on established Yoruba norms and values, is proud to be called an ‘Omoluabi’, i.e. a man of honour.

“But the reverse is the case with the self-acclaimed leaders of the present Yoruba irredentists. They are another cup of tea entirely. They are prepared to get their reckless and ill-thought-out ambition by fair or foul means. Instead of using superior logic to convince Nigerians, they tell lies at will to confuse the gullible. They forge names and concoct counterfeit organisations just by snapping their fingers.

“All these are in an effort to deceive the public. Our question to them is very simple: what kind of ‘republic’ do you want to establish with falsehood? Why must you resort to deception, lies and false propaganda? It is sheer mischief, nothing else. This is where Nigerians have to choose: should we follow liars and mischief makers or should we queue behind men of honour and truth? The devil you know is always better than the one you do not know. We may not have gold or silver today, but we will never deceive you with lies or half-truths. Unless you are a certificated gambler, it is too dangerous to follow liars to terra incognito.

“The names of fake Islamic groups like Yoruba Jamatru, Yoruba Islamic Organisation (YISO) and Yoruba Muslim Community have been used to deceive the general public. We alert the press and the good people of Nigeria that these are all fake groups conjured by the secessionist camp.

“Observers of the religious circle in the South West will note that notable Islamic organisations that have been speaking for Muslims in the region are the umbrella body for all Islamic organisations in the zone, the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), the Companion, The Criterion, The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), FOMWAN, NASFAT, QAREEB, the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), The Muslim Congress (TMC), The Ansaruddeen Society, Nawairudeen Society, MURIC, the Movement for Islamic Cultural Affairs (MICA) and a few others whom space cannot allow us to mention here.

“Most of these Islamic organisations have issued statements rejecting the Oduduwa Republic but the irredentists want to distort history by making forged statements using faceless Islamic organisations. This is criminal. We advise journalists to seek clarification from MUSWEN whenever any new group comments on the matter in order to avoid vicarious liability. MUSWEN is our umbrella organization in the South West and all Islamic groups in the South West are registered under it.

“We assert clearly, categorically and unequivocally that none of the so-called Islamic groups which have issued statements in support of a Yoruba Republic are known to us. They are fifth columnists created by the separatists with the aim of dividing the Yoruba Muslim community. But they have failed. It is not an Islamic organization if it is not an Islamic organization. The Yoruba Ummah is one, virile and indivisible. We therefore charge the Nigerian press to handle the Oduduwa Republic matter with utmost professionalism. The wheat must be separated from the chaff. This is not the time for yellow journalism. Neither is it the time for sensationalism.

“Statements issued by groups that are hitherto unknown in Christian, Muslim and traditional Yoruba circles should be checked and cross-checked. Media houses who publish statements made by fake groups will be held responsible for such statements. A certified journalist is expected to check the source of his or her information. The press must take responsibility.

“Those who allow the name of Yoruba Muslims to be used freely and irresponsibly will answer to Yoruba Muslims because we are going to make sure that we forward reports of fake statements to the security agents and legal action will be taken where necessary. The sources of those statements will be traced and all those involved will have questions to answer. This society must be sanitized.

“There must be consequences for irresponsible and mischievous statements and publications capable of causing the breakdown of law and order in the society. Yoruba Muslims have Allah-given fundamental right to enjoy freedom from molestation, harassment, intimidation and coercion from any quarters. MURIC will do everything possible within the laws of the land to guaranty this right.

“MURIC appeals to Nigerians, particularly the Yoruba people, to shine their eyes. These liars and forgers are advocatus diaboli whose only desire is to cause chaos in society. The Yoruba say ‘Omo ti o ba puro yio jale’ i.e. a child that tells lies will soon start stealing. Those who are now misleading you with lies will definitely steal all your money if ever Oduduwa Republic becomes a fait accompli. They are not to be trusted. They are making noise today because the tap from which free naira and dollar used to flow has been closed. We assure Nigerians that the agitation will die a natural death when the man they love to hate ends his tenure in 2023.

Tolulope Arotile immortalized by NAF, crew room named after her

OduduwaNews has gathered that the Flying Officer, Tolulope Arotile who died by a car accident at the Barracks of Nigerian Air Force has been immortalized by naming a Force 115 Group crew room at Port Harcourt after her.

The pilot, 24, died on July 14, 2020, after she was knocked down by an SUV driven by her former classmate at the NAF Base in Kaduna.

The NAF in a statement by its spokesman, Comm. Ibikunle Daramola, said the crew room housed an operations briefing room, computer room/library, pilots’ life-support room and lounge as well as a kitchen, dining room, changing room for pilots on standby and several restrooms.

The statement titled, ‘NAF immortalises first combat pilot, late flying officer Tolulope Arotile,’ said the facility also featured a newly constructed block of 18 two-bedroom flats for senior non-commissioned officers as well as a water project.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, stated that immortalising the late flying officer was done, “not only to honour her memory but also to further inspire young girls in Nigeria to study, work hard and pursue their dreams and legitimate aspirations with pride and honour.”

He said, “Besides, no fewer than 12 other female officers, who have undoubtedly been motivated by her inspirational life and the unprecedented and exemplary contributions by other female and male pilots, are currently undergoing flying training, both within and outside the country, to become NAF pilots.

Ogun Police command parades seven suspected fake soldiers arrested for robbery

The Ogun State Police Command has paraded seven fake soldiers who were arrested while trying to carry out robbery operation along Lagos Ibadan highway but met their waterloo with a stiff resistance from the SARS operatives.

The CP of Ogun Police command, Edward Ajogun while parading the suspects at the command’s headquarters at Eleweran, Abeokuta, said the suspects, who were members of a gang, had operated at Ijebu-Ife around 2.30am on September 4 in military camouflage uniforms.

Ajogun said the criminal gang engaged his men in a gun battle, which led to the death of one of them while seven others escaped.

He said operatives of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad, led by CSP Muhammad Tijani fished out the suspects from their different hideouts within and outside the state.

Ajogun said six of the suspects – Ikechukwu Alore, Ifeanyi Emmanuel, Chinbueze Kingsley, Obiora Michael, Elias John and Vincent Magnus– were arrested at different locations in Lagos.

He added that the remaining one, Chigozie Michael, was apprehended in Sagamu, Ogun State.

He said, “The gang leader, Obiora Michael, who sustained bullet wounds on his abdomen, right hand and thigh during the encounter with the SARS operatives, was traced to his home in the Ajangbadi area of Lagos on September 17, where his wife was treating him, having lied to her that he sustained the injuries in a road accident.”

Ajogun presented a cash gift of N100,000 to the SARS operatives as commendation for their efforts leading to the arrest of the suspects.

Lagos has potential to be another Dubai if we work hard, Sanwo-Olu tells cabinet members

The two-day Ministerial Performance Review Retreat organised by the executive arm of the Lagos State Government has ended with a strong charge to members of the State’s Executive Council to deploy their physical and mental resources to bringing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s development vision to reality.

The Governor, in his closing remarks at the event, said Lagos possessed all required to attain Dubai development model, urging the drivers of his administration’s vision of Greater Lagos to be articulate and purposeful in the discharge of the tasks assigned to them.

Sanwo-Olu, who was visibly enthusiastic about the encouraging feedback from the review of performance of his Government’s actions, applauded the cabinet members and heads of the State Government’s agencies for the progress recorded in the last one year.

He, however, said people’s expectations of his administration’s efforts were more than what had been achieved so far, charging the appointees to brace for more work.

The Governor urged the cabinet members and executives of the parastatals to increase their momentum and deploy more resourcefulness to the implementation of policies and programmes designed to transform the lives of the residents and the State’s economy.

He said: “There are many takeaways from this two-day retreat which must energise us further to deliver on our goals and promises to the people. But, one key thing we must take away from this exercise is the fact that we have sustained our attempts to transform Lagos and these efforts are being acknowledged by those who understand what development is all about.

“We have many great actions and ideas we have implemented, which probably have not been properly communicated. Now we need to be smarter, more organised and articulate in the way we go about our programmes so that our efforts can be more visible. The Ministry of Information and Strategy and everyone that has strength in communication should begin to magnify these efforts and show the world how Lagos is changing.”

Despite the slow pace of socio-economic activities across all sectors, which is occasioned by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Governor said his administration would not give excuses to residents, stressing that the virus would not derail his Government’s development agenda.

Sanwo-Olu charged all Commissioners and Special Advisers to work together and exchange information for better service delivery.

He said: “We need to work together and share information with one another. This way, we articulate our successes and progress better.”

Fuel Hike: NLC set to begin nationwide protest Sept 28

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has finalised its plan to stage a nationwide rally on September 28 to protest the increase in the prices of petrol and electricity tariff.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the NLC Tuesday endorsed the decision of the Central Working Committee (CWC) which resolved to commence a nationwide protest on September 28.

It is not yet clear if the meeting resolved to have a nationwide strike after the September 28 rally with officials saying a communique will be released soon to journalists.

ODUDUWANEWS had earlier reported how the CWC of the NLC last week issued a two week ultimatum to the government to reverse the price increase which was caused by the government’s removal of subsidy on petrol and electricity.

Addressing journalists at the end of its meeting on Tuesday in Abuja, the NLC President said the NEC condemned the increment of the tariff and advised the federal government to urgently repair Nigeria’s refineries.

New legal year: Sanwo-Olu commends judiciary for rising to the challenges of COVID-19

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Monday commended the State Judiciary for rising up to the challenges posed by COVID-19 in the justice sector.

Sanwo-Olu gave the commendation in his address at a church service held at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos to mark the commencement of the Lagos State Judiciary 2020/2021 Legal Year.

The Governor, who was represented at the service by his wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, noted that despite the disruptive impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, the State judiciary continued to dispense justice through innovative measures.

He said “I want to particularly commend the State judiciary for rising up to the challenge in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic. The courts continued to dispense justice in very innovative ways despite the ravaging impact of the pandemic. This is a testament of the commitment by our judges and magistrates to the effective and efficient dispensation of Justice”.

In his remarks, the Chief Judge, Justice Kareem Alogba, pledged that Judges and Magistrates of the State Judiciary will continue to dispense justice without fear or favour and in accordance with the law.

“We judges and magistrates in Lagos judiciary have always followed the path of God and will always apply the law as it is and dispense justice to the best of our ability. May the Lord lead us on the path of integrity and lead us aright”, he said.

Alogba sought the cooperation of his colleagues, management staff, stakeholders and members of the bar to ensure effective service delivery in the State, assuring the public that justice will be served as and when due.

In his sermon, the Diocesan Bishop of Lagos, Rt. Rev. Humphrey Olumakaiye admonished judges and magistrates to continue to uphold righteousness and justice while overseeing disputes brought before them.

Bishop Olumakaiye remarked that the judiciary has a role to play in salvaging Nigeria from the ills that have besieged the country and, therefore, must live up to its mandate of upholding justice at all times.

In his words: “You need to show that Justice is about the people and not about you. Justice and righteousness are closely linked and complement each other. You must not allow your moral integrity to be compromised”.

“To salvage this country which has been besieged by many ills, such as insurgency, kidnapping, corruption, armed robbery, child abuse and others, it is vital that you are upright and live a righteous life. You must serve God and mankind by upholding justice at all times”, he added.

Earlier at the Special Service held at the Central Mosque Lagos to herald the New Legal Year 2020/2021 of the Lagos State Judiciary, the Chief Imam of Oluwole-Ogba, Imam Sa’adallah Bella, who delivered the lecture, admonished judges and lawyers to be honest and truthful when discharging their duties, saying there can be no peace in the country if the people lose faith in the judiciary.

He said, “The judiciary is the pillar upon which the country stands, if it is shaken the country will collapse”.

The Grand Chief Imam of Lagos State, Sheik Sulaimon Abu-Nollah, in his supplication at the event, prayed that Allah, in his infinite mercy, grant Judges and Magistrates in the State the wisdom needed to dispense justice fairly.

Olojo festival kicks off in Ile-Ife as Ooni enters 7-day seclusion

The Arole Oduduwa & Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, on Sunday moved into ILE MOLE, Iremo quarters, Ile-Ife for a 7-day seclusion as the annual Olojo festival kicked off in the ancient city universally believed to be the source and natural headquarters of the Oduduwa Race.

Ooni Ogunwusi who appeared in his usual white traditional attire laced with colorful ancient beads, told newsmen on his way out of the Ile Oodua Palace of Ife that he will use the highly spiritual moment of seclusion as a point of contact to God Almighty towards the total eradication of the coronavirus as well as for peace and stability in the country.

Ooni Adeyeye who is the Co-chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria(NCTRN) explained that Olojo is a festival that connotes a strong indication of God’s creation and the day of the first dawn on earth.

“I am going into seclusion, I am going into fasting and prayers in the ways of our ancestors. Like you know that we’re gradually winning the war against coronavirus and we must indeed be thankful because we are not superior to those countries being crippled by this pandemic.

“After the 7-day seclusion, there follows the other activities one of which is the procession of the sacred Aare crown with which we will pray for the entire nation and humanity.

“Every move of the Aare procession is highly significant, including the some strategic junctions of spiritual and historical significance like ITA ORANFE & ITA AGBANSALA and OKEMOGUN where I would make supplications and prayers to our ancestors.

“The first junction indicates where the first dawn came and that is where must stop, followed by where the pathfinder diety which we call Ogun sighted the first dawn and that is Oke-Mogun.

“And when I come down from the hill, there was turmoil among the dieties because Aare is the first monarchical crown and at some point they all converged at Ita Oranfe where they all agreed that kingship and organization should commence and that is where the modern day democracy and other forms of government emanated from.” Ooni Ogunwusi noted.

During the seclusion rites, Ooni Ogunwusi would be incommunicado and not grant audience to anybody.

NMA disagrees with Sanwo-Olu over full reopening of worship centres in Lagos

The Nigerian Medical Association, Lagos Chapter has disagreed with the decision of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordering all Mosques, Churches and others to be fully opened for worshipping in the State.

The Chairman, Lagos NMA Committee on COVID-19 Response, Dr Japhet Olugbodi, said the state should have waited awhile before the full reopening of churches.

He said, “I think we should have tarried a little bit and see what comes out of the reopening of the airports. The strain of COVID-19 in Nigeria is different from the one in some countries, and since we’ve opened the airport, we may have people bringing in another strain of the virus that is different and deadlier than the one in the country.

“We should have seen how that goes first before reopening the economy fully. I understand that people are hard-pressed, but there is a popular saying that goes thus, ‘safety first.’ I think we could have tarried a bit till about another month after reopening of the airports before the full reopening of the economy.”
