Oyo govt warns club-goers against illegal parking at night, impounds ten vehicles

…..As Man Hit By Drunk Driver Dies in Ibadan

The Oyo State government has reiterated it’s warming against reckless driving and illegal parking at clubs as well as fun spots during the night as the State’s Road Traffic Management Authority, OYRTMA impounded ten vehicles during the weekend.

The warning came from the executive Chairman of OYRTMA, Mogaji Akin Fagbemi on Sunday. while reacting to an incident that led to loss of a life, which was caused by an individual suspected to be driving under alcohol influence at a popular club at Awolowo way, Bodija in Ibadan.

He disclosed that the middle-aged man who was hit by a drunk night reveller sustained head injury and later died at a hospital close to the scene of the incident.

Mogaji said “it would be recalled that following a directive of the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, the authority issued stern warnings to owners of commercial buildings particularly Club houses during the height of the covid-19 lockdown around March this year following the flagrant disregard to the pandemic prevention protocols as issued by the State Government and as regards the indiscriminate and illegal encroachment of road corridors by customers of the club houses.

“It is pursuant to this warning that the Authority moved to impound erring vehicles around such vicinities particularly as the Authority continues to receive several public petitions and formal complaints from both motorists and residents of the areas where such centers are situated.

“Following a road crash occasioned by the illegal parking of a vehicle whose owner was reported to be patronizing one of the club houses located at Awolowo Road here in Ibadan, OYRTMA in conjunction with the Special Security Joint task Force otherwise known as Operation Burst moved in to impound ten erring vehicles which have been deposited at the our premises pending their legal prosecution for infringing on section 16 of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority Law 2009.”

He said the victim, who was a resident of the area, was rushed to a nearby hospital after the accident around 1200hrs of Friday night, gave up the ghost because of the road blockade caused by indiscriminate parking of vehicles at the club house.

Dr Fagbemi urged the people to ensure that they do not constitute blockade to the roads whenever they parked their vehicles so as to allow others to pass, especially in cases of emergency situations such as fire outbreaks or the need to rush a sick resident to the hospital.

He called on fun lovers and night crawlers to always seek the service of licensed drivers, as there have been several cases of midnight accidents resulting from drunk-driving by vehicle owners who investigations often revealed were coming from club houses in the midnight, who destroyed properties of other persons as well as those of government, like public utilities and streetlight poles.

“It is to this end that we reiterate that the Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration would not condone the continuity of such destructive behaviors on the roads, we shall henceforth continue to enforce relevant sections of the extant traffic laws of the State against such,” he maintained.

#EndSARS: Dapo Abiodun condemns attack on protesters, orders release of detainees

Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun has condemned attack on peaceful protesters by men of Nigerian Police and called for the release of detainees.

This was contained in a statement released today via his official Twitter handle which reads in part:

“Freedom of peaceful assembly and of speech are the inalienable rights of every Ogun State citizen, as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution, and since governments at all levels are guided by this, the Ogun State Government will not be an exception.

“The use of threat, physical harm or lethal control by any security agency to resist peaceful protests will not be accepted by this Government, and I have given express directives that will be followed to the letter in this regard.

“Sadly, I received reports of daring attacks in Abeokuta by a fraction of people who hijacked the hitherto peaceful #EndSARS demonstrations organised by mostly Ogun State youths originally organised to make the voice of the good people of Ogun State heard. This led to the disruption of public peace; vandalisation of Police stations; damaging of vehicles of innocent citizens, in particular, that of the Ogun State Deputy Governor which was parked while she was attending a function.

“I have however instructed the Commissioner of Police to ensure the quick release of detained protest organisers today, and only investigate those apprehended while directly committing the acts of vandalism.

“I want to plead with the entire Ogun State populace to remain peaceful and calm, and be involved in only peaceful demonstrations, going forward.

“It is for our joint safety that I plead, in addition to this, that citizens should desist from any act of violence, breach of peace, and breakdown of law and order, as this puts even the lives of the citizenry themselves at risk. The State Government will not condone any act that will put the lives and property of its citizens, security agents and the State in danger”.

Oyo Govt vows to enforce environmental laws as Task Force docks 27 in Ibadan

Oyo state government has vowed to continue its enforcement of the State’s environmental laws to address the state of sanitation among dwellers.

Not less than twenty seven persons were apprehended on Thursday for flouting environmental laws during the weekly sanitation exercise along Bodija, Sango-Eleyele and Orogun axis of Ibadan.

The State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Dr. Abdul-Lateef Idowu Oyeleke disclosed that the State has done a lot of sensitization towards changing the poor habit of some people to their environment, an effort he said was still ongoing on the media and through regular meetings with stakeholders.

He hinted that the essence of the sensitization was to inform the public on the need to desist from violating environmental sanitation laws, adding that the government was not out to witch-hunt the people but ensuring a habitable and investor-friendly State.

The Commissioner further enjoined business owners, traders and the general public to see the prosecution of environmental sanitation offenders as a way of ensuring compliance with the law.

Speaking at a scene of enforcement, the Chairman, task force committee on Environment, ASP Francis Ojomo accompanied by the Director of Environmental Health Services and other Environmental health officers, revealed that despite all efforts of the State government in putting necessary policies towards ensuring safe, healthy and sustainable environment, some people were recalcitrant against compliance to environmental laws, as they kept displaying wares during sanitation exercise, indiscriminately dump waste on road medians, waterways and roadsides.

“The problem is not about the availability of appropriate places to dump refuse, the State gas provided those places and containers to pack waste, the problem is about people willfully flouting the laws and we are not going to stop applying the law whenever we catch such people.

“So much sensitization efforts have gone into changing attitudes for a better environment, there are many radio jingles and television playlets to achieve this and they are still ongoing, enforcement is the final level and we shall not joke with it.”

Lagos CBD charges 31 suspects to Court for violating environmental laws

In furtherance of the Lagos State Government’s resolve to combat street trading and other environmental nuisance, operatives of the Central Business Districts have arrested 31 persons for engaging in street trading within the Lagos Island Business District.

Speaking on the operation, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Central Business Districts, Mr. Olugbenga Olarenwaju Oyerinde affirmed that the present administration is passionate about the cleanliness of the environment and has directed CBD officials to clamp down on all violators of environmental sanitation, traffic and physical planning laws in the State.

He also reiterated the determination of the State government to restore the original master plan of the Lagos Island Business Districts and its adjoining axis by checking the activities of street traders and developers, who have converted all available spaces like walkways, streets and roads to shops.

Oyerinde, therefore, called on traders operating in the CBD, especially those selling on the streets and walkways, to remove their extensions and makeshift shops from the roads immediately, as no one will be spared in the present efforts to clean up the business district.

The suspects, who were arrested at different locations in Balogun, Martins, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Tom Jones and Broad Streets during a monitoring and enforcement exercise by the CBD operatives have, subsequently, been arraigned before Chief Magistrate Shakirat Obasa of the Lagos State Special Offences (Mobile Court) sitting at Alausa, Ikeja, for committing an offence contrary to the Environmental Management and Protection Law of Lagos State 2017.
