Looming Strike, Hold FG Responsible, ASUU Tells Parents

At least two zones of the Academic Staff Union of Universities have asked Nigerians to hold the Federal Government responsible if the body of university lecturers embarks on another strike.

The Abuja and Bauchi zones of the union said this on Tuesday while accusing the government of not implementing the agreement it signed with the lecturers in December 2020.

ASUU embarked on a strike as a result of its disagreement with the Federal Government on the funding of universities, the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, implementation of the University Transparency Accountability Solution, funding and revitalisation of public universities, earned academic allowances, promotion arrears and renegotiation of the 2009 agreement.

ASUU held several meetings with the Federal Government on the UTAS and the other issues, which were approved by the government, with a promise of prompt implementation.

The government’s assurance of implementation, which was accompanied by the signing of a Memorandum of Action, led to the calling off of the strike on December 24, 2020, after the Federal Government also agreed to exclude ASUU members from the IPPIS.

However, ASUU for some weeks now has been urging the government to fulfil the agreements contained in the Memorandum of Action, which it signed with the union.

As a result, the Abuja zone of the union, at its congress on Tuesday, accused the Federal Government of reneging on its promises and warned that such an action could lead to a fresh industrial action in the nation’s universities.

The zone comprises the Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State; Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State; Nasarawa State University, Keffi; Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State; and the University of Abuja.

The union said it could no longer guarantee industrial harmony in public universities due to the attitude of the government to the agreements.

The zonal coordinator, Dr Salahu Lawal, disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja.

Lawal urged Nigerians and parents with children in public universities to hold the government responsible for the consequences that might arise from the non-implementation of the MoA.

He said, “Recall that our union signed a Memorandum of Action with the government, leading to the suspension of the 2020 strike action in February 2021, but almost nine months on, ASUU is again calling on the government to honour its promises to the Nigerian people on the immediate deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution.

“The government, as it has always done, again reneged on its promises to the union and the nation, a development that can lead to another industrial action in the universities.

“We, therefore, demand the implementation of all outstanding provisions in the February 7, 2021 FGN/ASUU Memorandum of Action; the immediate deployment of ASUU’s innovation of a more robust system of human resources management and compensation called the UTAS; and the immediate payment of outstanding earned academic allowances to our members.

“We also demand the full implementation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement as renegotiated in 2021 based on the ILO’s collective bargaining principle; immediate action on the report of the presidential visitation panels to federal universities without delay; and immediate action on the recommendations of the committee on state universities.

“We urge all Nigerians to hold the Federal Government responsible if the union decides to embark on another industrial action following the non-implementation of the MoA.”

Lawal added that signing into law the draft renegotiated 2009 agreement and the release of revitalisation funds to public universities would address the deplorable conditions under which students live and learn.

He stated, “ASUU has for long laid bare to both the government and Nigerians the decrepit state of infrastructure on our campuses, which has been the bane of research activities in our universities.

“Our call for urgent intervention in this respect has been acknowledged by the government.”

Protest Rocks Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa Over Dissolution of Management

Some youths in Eruwa town gathered early today at the entrance Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic to protest the removal of the erstwhile acting Rector, Mr. Peter Adejumo and called for the appointment of substantive rector in the institution.

The youths who gathered in number also demanded the removal of the Governing Council Chairman of the institution, Prof. Samuel Ogundiran for failure to appoint substantive management.

The major entrance to the institution was locked as students and members of staff were prevented from entering the campus.

Recall that ODUDUWA NEWS had earlier reported the dissolution of management of the institution and subsequent appointment of Rector, Bursar and Head of Works in acting capacity.

The Governing Council of the institution had on Friday approved the appointment of Dr Akinteye O. Adewuyi as the Acting Rector, Oladipo S. Abimbola as the Acting Bursar and Abeegunde O. According to the governing council chairman, Professor Samuel Ogundiran, he said “the appointment is in accordance with the Conditions of Service for Nigeria Polytechnics as contained in National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Chapter Ten Cap (e)” that acting appointment shall be for a period of six months in the first instance and could be reviewed for another final period of six months.

Ogundiran said that the incumbent acting Rector, Mr Peter Adejumo’s tenure ended on 10th September 2021.

Meanwhile, in reaction to the protest, the Chairman while speaking today to the correspondent of ODUDUWA NEWS via telephone conversation through his Media Aide said, those who protested were rented and ignorant of the laid down rules and regulations for the appointment of substantive Rector.

He made clarification further as quoted thus: “Governing Council doesn’t appoint Acting Rector for the third time as insinuated by the protesters, the Governing Council was inaugurated last year July and it appointed Acting Management by August. The Council does not unilaterally appoint substantive management because it does not have final decision on substantive management but to select best three names which shall be forwarded to the Governor for final appointment after proper screening.

“The process for substantive management has started already, interested candidates have applied and the application closed by July, interview and selection of credentials shall commence next week.”

“What the Council did at the last meeting was in accordance with the provision of NBTE Scheme of Servic and Chairman can’t take unilateral decision without the consent of the entire Council, the decision was taken at the meeting not the room of Council chairman.

The Chairman however appealed for calm as the decision of the Council was in the best interest of the institution and urged the protesters to allow peace to reign and not to allow themselves to be used by those who are not happy with smooth academic calendar being enjoyed at the institution.

Sanwo-Olu Vows To Establish Additional Universities Of Science and Technology, Education In Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday said plans are underway for the state to have two additional universities of Science and Technology as well as Education.

He also vowed not to interfere with the ongoing selection process that would lead to the appointment of the substantive Vice Chancellor of the state-owned Lagos State University (LASU).

The Governor said he does not have personal interest in who becomes the next Vice Chancellor of LASU and therefore has no intention to influence the process, adding that due process would be followed in the appointment.

Governor Sanwo-Olu made the statement while receiving members of the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) led by its chairman, Prof. Samuel Edoumiekumo, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Lagos House, Ikeja on Tuesday.

“The process for the appointment of the substantive Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU) is ongoing and I can assure you that all the laws and due process that would lead to the appointment of the vice chancellor would be fully adhered to.

“I have no intention to interfere or have any interest in the choice of who would be vice chancellor. We have put in the committee men and women of impeccable character that have distinguished themselves and are willing to do for us a good job,” he said.

The Governor also promised to assist the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities to get back the title documents of its property situated at Idowu Taylor Street, Victoria Island in Lagos, saying the property would be released to the Committee at no cost.

He said Lagos State Government will support the Committee on its forthcoming 60th anniversary celebration holding next year.

Speaking earlier, Prof. Edoumiekumo commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for rising to the occasion when COVID-19 pandemic ravaged the state and for delivering dividends of democracy to the people of Lagos State in different sectors.

He said the ongoing metro rail system and the proposed 38 kilometres long Fourth Mainland bridge project, which according to him is one of the single most significant infrastructure projects undertaken by a state government in Nigeria, are testimonies of a thoroughly focused government.

The Chairman of CVCNU said Governor Sanwo-Olu’s support as the Visitor to the Lagos State University is commendable and called for the Lagos State Government’s support for the forthcoming 60th anniversary of the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.

“As Nigeria’s economic and social powerhouse, Lagos is arguably a mini-Nigeria and leader in its federation of states. Lagos sets the agenda and leads other states to emulate in economic development, innovation, good governance and education,” he said.

Prof. Edoumiekumo said the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities is desirous of working with key stakeholders to improve the Nigeria University system and therefore seek for mutually rewarded partnership with Lagos State Government and the people in that regard.

Lagos Adopts Staggered Resumption For Schools As COVID-19 Third Wave Increases

The Lagos State Government has announced the resumption guidelines for the Y2021/2022 academic session for public and private schools across the State.

In a release issued on Monday by the State Ministry of Education, the Honourable Commissioner, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, stated that all schools are expected to resume on Monday, 13th September 2021, while students of Model Colleges and Upgraded Schools will be required to resume in batches from Sunday 19th September, 2021.

In her words, “Boarders in Model Colleges and Upgraded Schools, as well as SS2 students seeking placement into SS3 class are expected to resume on Sunday 19th September, 2021. The revision for the classes will run from 20th to 26th September while promotion examination to SS3 class will start from 27th September to 8th October, 2021.

Mrs. Adefisayo further noted that the newly admitted JS1 students into Model Colleges and Upgraded Schools are to resume on Saturday, 2nd October, 2021 for a one-week orientation programme to intimate them on secondary school structure and modalities.

The Commissioner averred that other returning students in JS2, JS3, SS1 and the newly transited SS2 in the various Model Colleges and Upgraded Schools are to resume on Saturday, 9th October 2021, while classes for the students will commence on Monday, 11th October, 2021.

She also revealed that the adoption of staggered resumption for Model Colleges and Upgraded Schools was due to the presence of Y2020/2021 SS3 students currently writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) scheduled to end on the 6th of October, 2021, adding that another reason is that the schools cannot accommodate seven sets at once in the boarding system.

Adefisayo, therefore, appealed to parents to abide by the new development for a smooth academic session, just as she implored the students to be more diligent and devote more time to their studies.

Interview: Four Years After Reinstatement, Meet OAU Students’ Union Presidential Aspirants

ODUDUWA NEWS HAD AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THREE PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANTS OF GREAT IFE STUDENTS’ UNION.

In the last four years, the Students’ Union activities in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife had been paralysed before it was later reinstated via a statement made available to newsmen by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede in April. The VC claimed that he lifted the ban on union activities to honour the late Afenifere Spokesman, Dr. Yinka Odumakin who was an alumnus before he died. As the students decide today, we had an exclusive interview with three aspirants.

An exclusive interview with a penultimate student in Management and Accounting In OAU… We are pleased to have him here with us and we will be sharing our readers a quick exclusive interview with one of the presidential aspirants of Great Ife Students’ Union in the election that is holding today.

Join us in taking you through this quick summary of the interview.

ODUDUWA NEWS: Welcome to an Interview session with ODUDUWA NEWS. On a quick note,  kindly introduce yourself and  a quick response on your main intention of vying for the presidential post of the Students’ Union of OAU.

Efficiency: My name is Jimoh Kehinde popularly and politically circumcised as Efficiency, a penultimate student of the department of Management and Accounting, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, the leading university in Nigeria and arguably the foremost or better still, one of the foremost universities in Africa.

Without  much ado, in terms of meeting me, i can tell you categorically that i am in my early 20s and at the same time a preacher of the revolutionary gospel which is to fight for the emancipation of the oppressed as we know or that can be said to be the watchword for “Great IFE”.

Not to draw the curtain specifically at this point, i would say i am a man of my words and cherish sincerity in any of my dealings. I’m very accommodating, and this is to mention among many. Thank you.

To answer the second question,  I believe and perceive Great Ife Students’ Union as sacred. The union is supposed to be the  front-runner of progressive agitations especially when the country’s growth on the decrease. We have to revive our immediate society so as to face the bigger picture. I so much believe everyone should be guaranteed the right to life, liberty and property.

This is what has gingered my interest. We must create a platform for all and a union for all students not for some students. The lost glory must be brought back and I am on a mission to lead a union where the interest of the students shall be protected at all times.

ODUDUWA NEWS: Awesome! Thank you so much Efficiency! And Oduduwa News wishes you well.

An exclusive interview with OLOKEDE BUKOLA, a 300 level student of the Department of Political Science, OAU. We are pleased to have him here with us and we will be sharing our readers an exclusive interview with one of the presidential aspirants of Obafemi Awolowo University, Students’ Union.

Join us in taking you through this quick summary of the interview.

ODUDUWA NEWS: You are welcome to Oduduwa News Interview. On a quick note , kindly introduce yourself and  a quick response on your  main intention of vying for the presidential post of the Students’ Union in OAU?

BUKOLA: I am Olokede Oluwabukola Olamide, popularly known as BUKOLA. I’m a 300L student of the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

There is a trend I have seen in the Nigerian educational system and it is one that portends danger. This trend is obvious to every discerning student and those interested in university education in Nigeria. This trend started several years back but all the attempts to arrest this dangerous trend in our educational system have not really yielded immense positive results. Many of us in the university today did not attend public primary and secondary schools and the major reason for this was because of the *low quality of education they offer which was as a result of years of neglect and mismanagement on the part of those who were saddled with the responsibility to do so.

Even the private secondary schools we attended, there was no proper regulatory measures put in place to ensure quality assurance.

The trend currently is that our public universities are already on the path of neglect and mismanagement, the path that our public secondary schools followed and which consequently made them not to be a point of call for our parents when they wanted to enroll us for primary and secondary school education. The danger of this current trend of our public universities is that it would lead to the collapse of the public university system and this would make university education inaccessible to many young people, and the socio-economic status of the majority of our parents cannot afford to send us to private or foreign universities.

This dangerous trend that I have seen and the realization of the fact that the Students’ Union is a viable and formidable tool that could be deployed to arrest this trend made me to step out to seek the mandate from the Great Ife Students to be the President of our dear Union in the coming session.

ODUDUWA NEWS: Awesome ! This is a great move and we definitely hope you succeed in this political endeavour.

Thank you for the prompt and precise response Bukola.

An exclusive interview with OLAYIWOLA FOLARANMI, a 300 level student of the Department of English Language, OAU.

I am Olayiwola Folaranmi Festus, known as reform. I am in part three of the department of English and I am currently running for Great Ife Students’ Union President.

My plan is to protect all the students and defend our constitutional rights and freedom as enshrined in the Great Ife constitution. I will stand for and uphold all times, the principle of the rule of law and also display all levels of transparency, and accountability which is the bedrock of democratic governance.

For me, the leadership we deserve is one that will be a source of pride to all Great Ife Students. I offer leadership driven by empathy and capacity, strength and sagacity. I will not be different or turn a blind eye to real concerns of Great Ife students. My cardinal point is progress, development and transformation of the UNION and shall make the union a source of pride to all students.

ODUDUWA NEWS: Thanks for your time.

BREAKING: Schools to decide benchmarks as JAMB cancels general cut-off marks

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, on Tuesday, cancelled general cut-off marks for admission into tertiary institutions and gave schools the freedom to set their individual minimum benchmarks for admission.

The Board took the decision at the 2021 policy meeting, which was held virtually, and chaired by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.

Speaking during the meeting, Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, said, “Some universities such as the University of Maiduguri, proposed 150; Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, proposed 140; Pan Atlantic University proposed 210; University of Lagos 200; Lagos State University, 190; Covenant University 190; and Bayero University, Kano, 180.

“Institutions have now been given the liberty to decide cut-off marks; there will be no cut-off marks [stipulation] from JAMB.”

On the deadline for the closure of admissions, the stakeholders resolved to allow the education ministry to decide, as they could not agree on the December 31, 2021 deadline for all public institutions and January 31, 2022 for all private institutions.

Stakeholders also adopted the 2021 admission guidelines, which provide that all applications for part-time or full-time programmes for degrees, NCE, OND, and others must be posted only through JAMB.

The meeting approved that, for Direct Entry, the maximum score a candidate could present is six and the minimum is two or an E, as required by law.

JAMB holds make-up exams August 6
The policy meeting, chaired by the Minister of Education, usually has all heads of tertiary institutions, heads of regulatory agencies in the sector, and other critical stakeholders such as the chairmen of the committees on education at the lower and upper chambers of the National Assembly in attendance.

Earlier in August, JAMB had released a bulletin on the policy meeting, stating, “This meeting kick-starts the admission process into the nation’s tertiary institutions.

“It will discuss critical issues emanating from the presentation of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, on the just-concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, and Direct Entry applications, in addition to setting the tone for the 2021/2022 admission exercise.

“The meeting is expected to chart policy directions for the nation’s tertiary institutions, set admission guidelines and present application statistics, candidates’ performance as well as evaluate the 2020 admission exercise.

“The meeting, in addition to other deliberations, would take a stand on acceptable minimum admissions standards to be applied in all admissions to be undertaken by all tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

“Given the critical nature of the decisions to be taken at the meeting, it would be streamed live on the Board’s website, www.jamb.gov.ng, on its Facebook handle ‘@JAMBULLETIN’ and other social media platforms.”

Warning tertiary institutions against commencing admission process before the policy meeting, the bulletin added, “The Board makes it clear that it is an abuse of process for any institution to commence any admission exercise before this meeting, as it is this forum that gives this authorisation.”
