ODUDUWA NEWS HAD AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THREE PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANTS OF GREAT IFE STUDENTS’ UNION.

In the last four years, the Students’ Union activities in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife had been paralysed before it was later reinstated via a statement made available to newsmen by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede in April. The VC claimed that he lifted the ban on union activities to honour the late Afenifere Spokesman, Dr. Yinka Odumakin who was an alumnus before he died. As the students decide today, we had an exclusive interview with three aspirants.

ODUDUWA NEWS: Welcome to an Interview session with ODUDUWA NEWS. On a quick note,  kindly introduce yourself and  a quick response on your main intention of vying for the presidential post of the Students’ Union of OAU.

Efficiency: My name is Jimoh Kehinde popularly and politically circumcised as Efficiency, a penultimate student of the department of Management and Accounting, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, the leading university in Nigeria and arguably the foremost or better still, one of the foremost universities in Africa.

Without  much ado, in terms of meeting me, i can tell you categorically that i am in my early 20s and at the same time a preacher of the revolutionary gospel which is to fight for the emancipation of the oppressed as we know or that can be said to be the watchword for “Great IFE”.

Not to draw the curtain specifically at this point, i would say i am a man of my words and cherish sincerity in any of my dealings. I’m very accommodating, and this is to mention among many. Thank you.

To answer the second question,  I believe and perceive Great Ife Students’ Union as sacred. The union is supposed to be the  front-runner of progressive agitations especially when the country’s growth on the decrease. We have to revive our immediate society so as to face the bigger picture. I so much believe everyone should be guaranteed the right to life, liberty and property.

This is what has gingered my interest. We must create a platform for all and a union for all students not for some students. The lost glory must be brought back and I am on a mission to lead a union where the interest of the students shall be protected at all times.

ODUDUWA NEWS: Awesome! Thank you so much Efficiency! And Oduduwa News wishes you well.

BUKOLA: I am Olokede Oluwabukola Olamide, popularly known as BUKOLA. I’m a 300L student of the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

There is a trend I have seen in the Nigerian educational system and it is one that portends danger. This trend is obvious to every discerning student and those interested in university education in Nigeria. This trend started several years back but all the attempts to arrest this dangerous trend in our educational system have not really yielded immense positive results. Many of us in the university today did not attend public primary and secondary schools and the major reason for this was because of the *low quality of education they offer which was as a result of years of neglect and mismanagement on the part of those who were saddled with the responsibility to do so.

Even the private secondary schools we attended, there was no proper regulatory measures put in place to ensure quality assurance.

The trend currently is that our public universities are already on the path of neglect and mismanagement, the path that our public secondary schools followed and which consequently made them not to be a point of call for our parents when they wanted to enroll us for primary and secondary school education. The danger of this current trend of our public universities is that it would lead to the collapse of the public university system and this would make university education inaccessible to many young people, and the socio-economic status of the majority of our parents cannot afford to send us to private or foreign universities.

This dangerous trend that I have seen and the realization of the fact that the Students’ Union is a viable and formidable tool that could be deployed to arrest this trend made me to step out to seek the mandate from the Great Ife Students to be the President of our dear Union in the coming session.

ODUDUWA NEWS: Awesome ! This is a great move and we definitely hope you succeed in this political endeavour.

Thank you for the prompt and precise response Bukola.
