Breaking: Tinubu Appoints Prof. Joash Amupitan As New INEC Chairman

The National Council of State has approved the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). His nomination was presented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the Council’s meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Professor Amupitan, a distinguished legal scholar and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos, becomes the first person from Kogi State to be nominated for the top electoral position. The Council described him as a man of integrity and vast experience in law, governance, and public administration.

President Tinubu emphasized that Amupitan’s appointment was based on merit and his proven record of impartiality. The nomination will now be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation, as required by the Nigerian Constitution.

Amupitan, who was conferred with the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2014, is expected to steer the nation’s electoral body through key reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
