The hike in the price of diesel is taking its toll on Nigerians, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his agric business.

This is as Obasanjo lamented the high cost of diesel, feeds and exchange rate crisis as they affect fish production in Nigeria.

Chief Obasanjo said he has been sweating because of the high cost of diesel, saying this has been affecting his fish production.

Speaking at the Southwest fish farmers’ congress held Tuesday at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), the Balogun Owu complained that the hike in the cost of diesel, as well as the constant increase in prices of fish feeds, would kick fish farmers out of business.

To avoid this, Obasanjo said the only way is for them to come together to agree on sustainable prices that could be adopted to keep them in business.

According to him, farmers cannot be producing at the mercy of the buyers who would come around to buy the fish for whatever amount that suited them without considering the effect of the harsh economy on the production of fish.

He maintained that with the current price of diesel at N800 per litre, the production of a kilogram of fish is N1,400; he said the farmers cannot sell such fish for less than N1,500 as anything short of that amounts to “outright loss.”

“The price of diesel has gone high because the management of this country is not what it should be. And it is as simple as that. Then, what will happen is that particularly those of us who have to use a bit of diesel in producing fish, we will completely go bankrupt, and when that happens, Nigerians will still have to eat fish.

“Fish production will be out of reach and then, people will be producing fish outside Nigeria and be dumping it here. And you will go jobless, poor and indigent. So, what do we have to do? To come together. We want to sustain fish production and we must be able to take care of those who are going to eat and those of us who are producing,” he explained.

Facing the farmers, he asked, “How many of you are using diesel in your production? I use diesel and I’m already sweating. I’m already sweating.”

The President of South-West Fish Farmers Price Sustainability Group, Amo Tunbosun disclosed that the Country currently consumes around 3.6 million metric tonnes of fish annually but only produces 1.12 million tonnes leaving a balance of 2.6 million tonnes to be imported.

Amo explained that one of the major challenges confronting the fish farmers is the continued increase in the prices of inputs in the production of fish and majorly the feed and the refusal of the buyers to buy the fish at a commensurate price.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has today commissioned 16th housing project in Victoria Island.

The Ogun State Amotekun Corps has nabbed one Ibrahim Ismaila for allegedly having sexual intercourse with a goat.

The 18-year-old Ismaila was arrested in Ilu-Tuntun Olorunsogo, Ajowa, in Ifo Local Government Area of the state.

The state commander of Amotekun, David Akinremi, who disclosed this on Tuesday said, the teenager’s arrest followed the alarm raised by one Jimoh Opeyemi, who saw Ismaila while committing the act of bestiality.

The said Jimoh Opeyemi, an iron bender was going to a construction site when he sighted the suspect sleeping with a she-goat.

Akinremi said Opeyemi raised the alarm, attracting people around the area including an operative of Amotekun Corps, who got the suspect arrested.

Also, the corps hinted that it arrested one Raimi Yusuf for reportedly impersonating an official of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

Yusuf was said to have defrauded some people of the sum of N1.5 million.

Arrested in Ijebu-Ode, said the suspect claimed to be an employee of IBEDC, promising one Olufeyisan Oluwaseun and four others the facilitation of electric poles and metres from the electricity distribution company.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has mourned the death of a prospective corps member, Miss Eunice Igweike, who was said to have been murdered by suspected ritualists in Ogun State.

Miss Igweike, a graduate of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Anambra State, was on her way to the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Ogun, when she met her untimely death.

A statement by the NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, confirming the sad event, said security agencies were working to unravel the circumstances surrounding her death.

The statement reads, “The attention of the NYSC management has been drawn to an online publication with the above caption making the rounds in the social media.

“To put the issues raised in proper perspective, the Scheme indeed lost a prospective corps member by name, Miss Eunice Chioma Igweike, who set out for the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Sagamu, Ogun State, having been deployed to the state for National Service under the 2022 Batch B Service Year.

“A call by her elder brother to the NYSC on July 20, 2022 reporting that he had not been able to reach her sister on phone since her departure to the NYSC Ogun Camp from Aba, Abia State, prompted the scheme to contact the security agencies in order to know her whereabouts.

“Sadly, on Thursday July 21, 2022, her remains, which were intact, and not mutilated as reported in the media, were recovered along Sagamu-Imota Road and deposited in the morgue.

“The NYSC feels highly diminished by the death of Eunice Chioma Igweike, a promising young Nigerian that would have been a great ambassador of her family, contributing her quota to nation building.

“The Director-General NYSC, Brigadier General Mohammed Fadah, management and the entire members of the NYSC family commiserate with Igweike Family on the demise of the young lady.

“In the same vein, the scheme extends condolences to the Ohafia Community, the Government and people of Abia State over the death of the Prospective Corps Member.

“Security agencies are working round the clock to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of Miss Igweike.
May God in His infinite mercy rest her soul in peace and bliss.”

Men of Ogun state Police Command on the 16th of July 2022 arrested a prison escapee Festus Okoeguare and one Nancinant Paul Joshua for vandalising electricity cable.

The two suspects were arrested following an information received by policemen at Ogbere divisional headquarters that the power installation at Hallmark University junction along Shagamu-Benin expressway has been vandalized by some hoodlums. Upon the information, the DPO Ogbere division mobilized his men in conjunction with men of Amotekun corps and moved to the scene.

On sighting the security men, the hoodlums took to their heels while a get away vehicle they parked quickly zoom off with some cables. Other suspects were hotly chased and two amongst them were apprehended.

On interrogation, it was discovered that Festus Okoeguare was an escapee from White House Correctional Center located at Sapele road Benin city. It was further revealed that the escapee was convicted for murder in 2010 and was sentenced to death by hanging. It was during the endsars protest that the prison was broken into and he escaped.

Meanwhile, the commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole has directed that the suspects be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Departments for proper profiling and onward transferred to the Correctional Center.
