INTERVIEW: Recently Held Poly Ibadan Students’ Union Election Was Free And Fair – Dean

In an interview with ODUDUWA NEWS, the Dean of Students’ Affairs of The Polytechnic Ibadan, Mr. John Akinwumi Makinde discussed the recently conducted Students’ Union election.

The Dean who was also the electoral chairman, while granting an interview to ODUDUWA NEWS early hours of Monday, affirmed that the election was free, fair and transparent as against the allegation from some students that the process was tampered with to favour their annointed candidates.

Recall that some students had protested last week against the outcome of the election where they barricaded the school entrance, carrying placards with various inscriptions and chanting ‘aluta’ songs.

According to the Dean, “there was nothing like rigging in the election as all candidates were pleased with the process because all their party agents who represented the candidates appended their signatures on the result sheets.

“We had our Students’ Union election through electionic voting and we firstly had our dummy demonstration to showcase our readiness before the whole process.

“Thank God ODUDUWA NEWS correspondent witnessed the election, you saw the transparent process and how the election was conducted peacefully without any rancour.

“As unmpire we promised them fairness, equity and we demonstrated and showcased it. The process was so transparent because those that won and lost all appended their signatures.

“How will I rig online voting in the presence of security forces, journalists and several other people. We ensured that all stakeholders were carried along before the commencement of the electioneeing process and I didn’t even know the IT expert that designed the platform for election.

“The hues and cries aftermath were handiwork of my traducers who are hellbent on using every ocassion to launch their mischievous act, they have been on this before I became the Dean as no fewer than thirteen petitions were written against me and I overcame all their traps.

“I am from Marketing Department of the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies, both the students that won and lost are not from my department. The guy that won is from the Department of Purchasing Supply and the guy that lost is from Business Administration.

“It is however sad that some students embarked on protest and locked the gate to mislead the public. Though it is within their constitutional right to protest and express their grievances but I would implore them to be civil in all their approaches.

“We are open for talks on any issue, I will implore students to shun any act capable of truncating the smooth academic environment we have been enjoying for a long period of time.

“As an institution we have tried our best. Though, students will always be students. At the same time, they would keep on improving. Our expectations from those that won should be based on template and platform we give to them to ensure that the school is peaceful. We are lecturers here because they are here and we shall do everything under our control to ensure that the school is peaceful”.

The Dean implored the students not to be unnecessarily combative and when they have their grievances they should choose best alternative dispute resolution.

He talked about the students were suspended recently on the allegations of kidnapping and robbery. He said those students were given fair judgement at the disciplinary committee and they were suspended according to the rules and regulations guiding the institution.

2023 Presidency: Yoruba Nation Group UK Counters Afenifere, Endorses Tinubu/Shettima

The Yoruba Nation United Kingdom,a group agitating for the creation of Oduduwa Republic have endorsed the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the candidate to be supported by the group.

In a Communique signed in London on the 22nd October during the Yoruba World Congress press conference, the group took the decision at the back drop of Afenifere endorsement of the Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi.
The Memorandum of understanding signed by the representatives of the various groups present had the President of the Yoruba Nation UK,Eng.Tajudeen Raheem, All Progressive Congress UK President,Hon Abeeb Oladapo and the leadership of the Tinubu Shetimma Support group led by Alhaji Azeez Salam in attendance.

In the statement released,the group said the endorsement is important and as such,a weekly mobilization event ending March 2023 across all the 6 Southwest states and the federation.The All Progressive Congress UK will relaunch the endorsement nationally while the Tinubu Shetimma Support group TSSG-diaspora will relaunch globally.

Also present at the event were members of the mobilization for Yoruba Nation, Mrs Mojisola Cole aka Mama Duncan (Chicago), Barrister Femi Ogunjimi JP and Barrister Ola Alatishe.
Also present were the Tinubu Shetimma Support group TSSG-DIASPORA members led by the woman leader,Mrs Kemi Omole, President of the Asiwaju Support Moving Train, Nigeria and diaspora,Mrs Mujidat Folashade Adegbenro. Other members of the TSSG present were Mrs Tunrayo Badero,Asabi Tunrayo from Nigeria as well as Mr Rasaq Ayinde Anobi (UK).

Ooni of Ife to marry 7th wife tomorrow in Lagos

Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II has perfected plan to marry another wife, Temitope Adesegun, a PhD holder, making her the 7th wife.

Temitope Adesegun is a highly influential woman in business and management. She bagged diplomas in Linguistics and Data Processing from the University of Lagos in 1998 and 2000 respectively and a Bachelors’ in Business Administration from the same university.

She enjoyed a private sector career as an administrative executive and public relations officer at several organisations.

In 2009, she became the Personal Assistant to the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Princess Adenrele Adeniran-Ogunsanya; a position she managed till the end of her political tenure in 2011.

She is a certified alumnus of the following universities: University of Oxford, United Kingdom, INSEAD Business School, Fontainebleau, France, University of Cambridge, Judge Business School, United Kingdom and Harvard Kennedy School of Government in the United States.

Currently, she leads the working team of the Hopes Alive Initiative under the Auspices and Management of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II through the House of Oduduwa Foundation.

Commissioning: Sanwo-Olu Claims Lekki Petroleum Products Terminal Can Store 300 Million Litres Of PMS

The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has on yesterday commissioned Pinnacle Oil’s Lekki Petroleum Products Terminal, at the Lekki Free Trade Zone.

The Lekki FTZ is Nigeria’s most active and vibrant Free Trade Zone, and it embodies what Lagos represents. Which is vision, commitment, and an enduring spirit of excellence; this is what we have always stood for.

The Governor while speaking at the commissioning was quoted as saying thus:

“Pinnacle oil’s Petroleum Products Terminal has been designed to make possible the direct transfer of petroleum products from large vessels, through its Conventional Buoy Mooring (CBM) and Single Point Mooring (SPM) facilities.

“What this means is that vessels as large as between 90,000 Dead Weight Tons (DWT) and 150,000 DWT can conveniently berth here, and discharge their products efficiently, with minimal turnaround time.

“In addition, this facility can store up to 300 million litres of refined Petroleum Products. By all standards this is an impressive facility, built to the highest standards available anywhere in the world.

“The facility will not only serve Nigeria, it is also being positioned to serve the export market across West Africa, cementing Lagos’ place as the prime hub for commerce and logistics in West Africa.

Road accident claims three, injure two in Abeokuta

According to the Ogun Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), three people were killed and two others were injured in a road accident on Sunday along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

Mr Ahmed Umar, Sector Commander, told reporters in Abeokuta that the accident involved a Volvo mini truck and a Nissan car after the Obada police station along the expressway.

According to Umar, the accident happened around 7:15 a.m. and was most likely caused by a route violation on the part of the driver of the truck marked AKM 489 ZY.

Suicide: Body of Young Lady Who Jumped Into Osun River Still Missing

A yet-to-be-identified lady committed suicide by jumping from the Gbodofon Bridge into the Osun River on Thursday in Osogbo.
According to eyewitness accounts, the teenager jumped into the river after receiving a phone call at about 4:00 p.m.

According to them, the lady had alighted from a commercial motorcycle on getting to the bridge along the Gbongan-Osogbo road. An eyewitness, Tosin Olaleye told newsmen that the lady was having a conversation with someone on the phone when she got to the bridge.

“We saw her talking on the phone and when she alighted, she dropped the phone into her purse.

“She dropped her bag and the next thing we noticed was that she jumped straight into the river.

“We were all shocked. Before anybody could do anything, she was already in the river and we did not see any trace of her again,” the source said.

She disclosed that after other passersby raised the alarm, she and other witnesses to the incident quickly contacted the Federal Fire Service and they arrived at the scene within minutes but there was little they could do as several minutes of rescue efforts proved abortive.

“After several minutes of fruitless search, the fire fighters left the scene without recording any success. The water level has increased because of the rain and that also made it more difficult for her to be found. No one could enter the river because of its intensity,” she added.

The Federal Fire Service, Osogbo office has not given an official reaction to the incident.

Toe The Line Of Chief Bisi Akande, Accept Defeat – Osun PDP Tells Oyetola

A one-time People Democratic Party, (PDP)South West zonal secretary, and the newly Inaugurated Chairman Committee for the swearing-in of Senator Ademola Adeleke, Osun Governor-Elect, Rev Bunmi Jenyo, has advised Governor Adegboyega Oyetola to accept defeat of the July 16 governorship election.

Jenyo urged Governor Oyetola to toe the line of the ex-governor of the state, Chief Bisi Akande who he said accepted defeat in 2003 election.

Chief Bisi Akande, who sought reelection in 2003 on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy, (AD) accepted the defeat when he lost to Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola of the People Democratic Party, (PDP).

Speaking shortly after his Inauguration as the Chairman Committee for the swearing-in of the Governor Elect, Sen. Ademola Adeleke at Party secretariat in Osogbo, Osun state, Jenyo said Governor Gboyega Oyetola should be courageous enough to conceed defeat.

According to party chieftain, “The incumbent government doesn’t have a choice, this is statutory. I keep saying it to people when they said they are not cooperating, they have no choice than to cooperate. When Fayemi suppose to leave in Ekiti he left and inauguration was done, swearing in was done, same thing is going to happen here in Osun state.

The incumbent government are not facing reality. They should toe the line of Chief Bisi Akande. When he lost, instantly he gave up, but having said that, the statutory will compel them to handover to Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke” Jenyo said.

Speaking, after the inauguration of the inauguration ceremony of the Osun Governor-elect, Ademola Adeleke on November 27, the Osun PDP Caretaker Chairman, Adekunle Akindele, charged the 13 member committee management team with different sub-committees, to ensure that the inuaguration is superb and the best in the country.

Akindele said every citizen of the state, especially members of the party would participate in the celebration, adding that as the inuaguration would be going on in the capital city, members and supporters across all the local councils would also be in the mood of celebration.

Akindele said, “The task before me is to inuagurate the committee that will usher in our governor. I want to charge the committee to ensure that the inuaguration is superb. I want stakeholders present to know, that outside Osun, a lot of people are anxious to see what will happen on that day. Many people have been asking for our preparedness for that day.”

For this inauguration, the celebration starts from now. We are just underestimating our strength in Osun. We are in millions. Decision like this, sometimes, it’s not possible to bring everyone on board, we have to streamline it to make sure that few people are brought on board. Whatever we want to do at the party level, we make sure we reach out to members at the local councils. We want to make sure that the whole state are involved across board. We have created a platform for the celebration to take place at various local government.

“Hence, we have local government inuaguration committee. You can make some addition in your local government, but, whatever you do must be approved by the chairman of the committee for the purpose of budgeting.

“Give us the most memorable swearing-in in the history of the state and in Nigeria,” he said.

Akindele warned members of the party against indiscipline, saying, “we need to instill discipline in the party. Discipline is key. We are able to achieve what we are able to achieve because the leadership of the party instilled discipline. The party won’t shy away from sanctioning any member who derails from the core values of the party.”

CityMirrorNews reports that management committee is chaired by Bunni Jenyo while the secretary is Hashim Abioye.

Other members of the committee included Chief Mrs Dupe Adeleke, Sunday Bisi as Chairman, venue and accomodation; Diran Odeyemi, Chairman Media, Publicity and Entertainment, Lere Oyewumi, chairman, Budget and Procurement, Kazeem Akinleye, Chairman, Security, Muyiwa Oladimeji, Chairman Medical, Bamidele Salam, chairman, liason and Niyi Owolabi among others.

Town Hall: Ekiti gov, Oyebanji hosts traditional rulers, others over 2023 budget

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, has assured the people of the State that the 2023 budget will give adequate consideration for their basic needs while targeting all round development of the state.

He also said that the recently launched 30 years development plan of the State would be his working document.

The Governor stated this on Friday during his citizens’ engagement meetings held in the three senatorial districts of the state as part of preparation for the 2023 budget. He added that the town hall meetings had become an “annual ritual” since the first administration of former Governor Kayode Fayemi, to ensure community participation in budget preparation.

The town hall meetings which took place in Ikole (North senatorial district), Ode (South senatorial District) and Ado-Ekiti (Central), had in attendance top government officials, State and National Assembly members, council chairmen, traditional rulers, market women, artisans and other stakeholders. The meetings received suggestions and proposals from various communities on projects they want government to include in the 2023 budget.

Oyebanji at the meetings told the people that his administration was irrevocably committed to participatory and all-inclusive government and budgeting, adding that the purpose of the meeting was to interact with the representatives of various towns and communities to articulate their needs for inclusion in the 2023 budget.

The Governor, who noted that the requests of all the communities are similar, said his administration would address their concern about security. He also challenged them on the need to assist the security agencies in intelligence gathering by coming up with relevant information of suspicious movements or activities to enable them track down people with criminal tendencies.

“We should all be vigilant about what happens in our society. I agree we should step up our action on Amotekun and strengthen the security outfit, but Amotekun without intelligence is zero. He said.

Governor Oyebanji who noted that the various concerns of the people including electricity supply, potable water, rehabilitation of roads, renovation of schools building and others assured the people that the administration is already making efforts with relevant authorities to ensure that electricity supply is restored in some areas that have been without power supply for years.

On his effort to strengthen the feedback mechanism from the people, the Governor said his administration would establish an Ombudsman office where the people can supply government with useful information that would guide government in its decision-making process.
On road rehabilitation, the Governor assured the people that the RAAMP 1000km rural road project is still in the pipeline and would commence immediately after the rainy season. He explained that all rural roads fall under the purview of the programme, which is in partnership with the World Bank.

While assuring Ekiti people that his administration would fulfil his electoral promise of bringing more development to the grassroots, Oyebanji appealed for their support to enable him achieve the lofty goals.

“All the requests made by all the communities are related and what we will do is to prioritize your requests because what is paramount in the heart of one community is different from that of the other community. The reason we are doing this is because the government belongs to you and you know your basic needs even though government may not be able to do all, but we would address the basic ones.

“As a responsible government, we are of the firm belief that citizens’ participation in budgeting process enables ownership and efficient service delivery. It also gives meaning to the popular definition of democracy by Abraham Lincoln which describes democracy “as government of the people by the people and for the people”. For us, we want to govern with the people and not for them. You will always be part of our decision making and your voice will always be heard.

“This meeting is not only a personal commitment to participatory budgeting, it is also in conformity with the global best practices in budgeting. It is also one of the indicatory mileage of accountability requirements of the tripartite programme called: State Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAS) programme.

“Our annual Budget preparation process shall be bottom-up, whereby the needs and interest of the people shall be articulated. The involvement of the citizens in the Budget preparation is geared towards effective utilization of public funds based on the needs of the people. He noted.

The representatives of the communities comprising the traditional rulers and community leaders, after presenting their various demands, also commended the Governor for sustaining the citizens engagement programme aimed at effective budgeting.
