Lagos Govt begins market demolition at train station locations

The Lagos State Government has commenced the demolition of markets around train stations.

The ongoing demolition exercise by the Lagos State Building Control Agency started at 10:20 a.m. on Saturday and commenced with the Lateef Jakande Train Station.

Thereafter, the team went to 5 other stations to conduct the demolition exercise, hence clearing traders from the rail tracks to enable a right of way for the trains.

The other stations included Iju Railway Station, Ebute-Metta Railway Station, Yaba Railway Station, Agege Railway Station, and Mushin Railway Station.

Our correspondent was on-site as enforcement officials wielded sledgehammers and cutting equipment to demolish extended walls close to the road, pulling down shanties, and flinging goods from makeshift shops and tables.

Earlier, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had on Wednesday issued a two-day ultimatum to traders selling their wares on train tracks to vacate.

Ogun Governorship Poll: Tribunal Dismisses Adebutu’s Petition, Upholds Dapo Abiodun’s Victory

The Ogun State governorship election petition tribunal has dismissed as incompetent, the petition brought forth by Ladi Adebutu, the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because it referred to INEC’s result as “purported.”

The petition contested the legitimacy of the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in March as the outcome of the polls against incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun.

On Saturday, the tribunal concluded that Mr Adebutu’s petition was fatally flawed on the grounds of incompetence hinged upon the fact that the petitioner’s case did not directly address the election results as officially declared by INEC. Rather, Mr Adebutu’s petition had insinuated that the results were “purported,” which, in essence, suggested that he might have come before the tribunal to argue based on mere rumours rather than established facts.

In its ruling, the tribunal asserted, “Petitioners have a duty, as outlined in the Schedule, to plead the election results as officially announced. Regrettably, the petitioners failed to fulfil this duty. Instead, they used the word ‘purportedly’ when describing the election results, a term that, according to the dictionary, implies unverified rumours. Therefore, the court finds that the petitioners should have challenged the officially announced results, not unsubstantiated rumours.”

Consequently, the tribunal arrived at a decision, deeming the petition as legally incompetent due to this fundamental flaw. The tribunal’s decision may have underscored the significance of adhering to procedural norms in election petitions, emphasizing that claims must be based on credible and officially recognized election results it could also mean to some analysts, a miscarriage of Justice unreasonably hinged on a ridiculous technicality as it was clear that the figures were in fact INEC’s figures.

This particular aspect of Mr Adebutu’s petition, which centred on alleged irregularities such as cancelled votes, fake ballot papers, overvoting, and the failure to utilize the Biometric Verification Authentication System (BVAS), was relegated to the periphery by the tribunal. Instead, the tribunal’s focus primarily honed in on the use of the term “purportedly” by the petitioner when addressing the election results.

The implications of this ruling are far-reaching. INEC declared that Mr Abiodun won the election polling 276,298 votes against Mr Adebutu’s 262,383. At the time of the announcement, the margin of lead was less than the number of voters who could not cast their votes due to violence and other factors. In cases like this, the number of voters left out could significantly affect the results of the election had they voted, the law requires that the election be declared inconclusive and supplementary elections held.

The solid ground upon which Mr Adebutu built his petition, according to the court, will no longer matter because the legal team referred to the figures as “purported.”

Groom-To-Be, Best Man Die In Car Crash On Wedding Eve In Ibadan

Family members of a 34-year-old groom-to-be in Ibadan, Oyo state, identified as Bosun, are currently mourning the loss of their son, who died on the eve of his wedding.

The groom, Bosun, and his best man were killed along Idi-Ape Road when they were returning from his bachelor’s eve party.

Two other people, including the groom’s friends, were also killed in the auto crash, which occurred opposite Bova’s Petrol Station, Olowotinfowosanu Shopping Complex, Ibadan.

Bosun was, until his sudden death on September 29, a staff of a multi-national firm in Nigeria.

He was scheduled to have his wedding on Saturday (today), September 30, but sadly died on Friday, September 29.

The groom was said to be returning from his bachelor’s eve party in a Highlander SUV, while his best man, was driving a Toyota Camry, behind him, when they rammed their cars into a trailer offloading.

According to bystanders, the accident happened about 11p.m., when they crashed into the trailer.

The groom’s corpse has been deposited at Molly Hospital, Ibadan.

Fourteen passengers rescued as bus goes up in flames on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

A commercial bus carrying 14 passengers and a driver was gutted by fire in the early hours of Saturday, Sept. 30, on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The Toyota Hiace, with number plate AFN117YL, took off from the Ijora motor park in Lagos and was headed to Ilorin when one of the tyres burst.

The bus immediately caught fire as it came to a stop in the middle of the road.

Thankfully, no passenger was burnt in the inferno though some sustained cuts and bruises while fleeing the burning bus.

All the passengers’ belongings got burnt in the fire. Some lost their phones, footwear, and important documents in the fire.

Osun Amotekun members, others arrested for shooting Lagos residents

The police in Lagos State have arrested five armed men, suspected to be fake members of the South West Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, for shooting some residents of Igbo Olodo village along Ketu Omu Road in the Ikosi Ejinrin Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.

Those who were arrested have been identified as Mojeed Lookman, Ajani Tunde, Adebayo Abdulahi, Opabola Rofiat and Abiola James.

The suspects were arrested by policemen attached to the state police command while reacting to a distress call by residents of the Lagos community.

The police also recovered: four (4) locally made guns with twenty-two (22) live ammunitions from the arrested suspects.

We gathered that the invasion of the community by the armed men came some months after a 49-year-old resident of the community, Alade Bello was hacked to death by some armed hoodlums.

The gunmen, who were led by a man simply identified as Biodun Bashiru, claimed to have been mobilized to Lagos from Ede Osun State .

Motorists in Ogun cautioned against disobeying traffic rules

Cdr. Adekunle Ajibade, the Ogun West Area Commander of Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), on Wednesday warned motorists against disobeying traffic rules and regulations.

Ajibade gave the warning while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota, saying this will help stem the occurrence of automobile accidents during the “Ember” months.

The TRACE official spoke against the backdrop of an accident in which two trucks collided at Arobieye, along the Ota-Idiroko road.

NAN reports that two trucks had a head-on collision and plunged into the Iju river, due to a vehicle which broke down on Wednesday along the road.

However, eight people were involved in the accident in which one person was killed and two others sustained injuries.

“The incident could have been averted if the vehicle that broke down had used a C-Caution sign and the other two vehicles had adhered to traffic rules and regulations. In addition, we will advise drivers to ensure that their vehicles are in good shape before putting them on the road. They should desist from speeding and use the C-Caution sign whereever their vehicles develop any fault, so as to prevent incoming vehicles from ramming into them,” Ajibade said.

He enjoined them to exercise patience and refrain from dangerous driving during the ember months to reduce mishaps on the highways.

Labour Party Declares Support for Proposed NLC and TUC Strike

The Labour Party has expressed support for the indefinite strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to press home their demands for better working conditions.

Lagos Reporters reports that the party said it is in total support of any legitimate means to be deployed by Nigerian workers to press for better working conditions.

The strike is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, October 3rd, and will continue until the government addresses the workers’ demands.

The workers are demanding an increase in the minimum wage, a reduction in the prices of goods and services, and an improvement in working conditions.

The Labour Party has accused the government of indifference, insensitivity, intransigence, and recalcitrant posture towards the genuine demands of the Labour bodies.

The party also said that the government is punishing Nigerian workers for taking a stand during the February 25 Presidential Election.

The Labour Party has urged all its members and supporters to stock their homes with their necessary needs ahead of a long-drawn mass action until victory is ascertained.

Ogun Gov, Abiodun Flags Off Aviation Village, Says Project Will Complement Cargo Airport

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Tuesday, flagged off the construction of 200 units of two-bedroom expanded bungalows, at the Gateway Aviation Village, located at Iperu in Ikenne Local Government Area of the State.

He said the project was divided into two phases, with the first 100 units ready in six months.

The governor, who was represented by the Special Adviser on Housing, Jagunmolu Jamiu Omoniyi, said the project would herald the creation of a new city in the town and would serve the entire Remo cluster and the state in general.

According to the governor, the siting of the housing scheme would serve institutions and people who will make use of the Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport, noting government agencies like the Customs, the Nigerian Air Force, and corporate bodies, have already indicated interest in the airport.

He added that the project would create jobs for about 5,000 artisans of various skills in the course of the execution of the project.

The governor said: “This is the people’s project. This housing scheme will complement the airport and serve those who will work in this town. I can assure you that within two years, the story of this town will change. We will not engage outsiders to work in this estate, but the people of this town.

“We have done similar projects at Kemta, Idi-Aba and Kobape. The siting of similar housing estate has changed the landscape of Kobape which was a village before to a lively city.”

He called on prospective buyers to start the process by obtaining their forms and charging the people to support and take ownership of the project for the development of the town.

Speaking on behalf of the Alaperu of Iperu, Oba Idowu Basibo, Ebi Idena, and Oba Lukman Salami, expressed delight that the project is being sited in his domain.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Ikenne Local Government Area, Mr. Segun Ogunleye, expressed gratitude to the governor, saying with the siting of the housing estate and the cargo airport, the development of the town is assured.

Also, the Chairman of Ogun State Park Management Service, Engr. Wale Yusuf, said the project would change the face of the town for good, urging the indigenes to support the project.
