Sanwo-Olu tasks all stakeholders to address environmental challenges

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday, restated the need for everyone to come together and address environmental issues through multifarious approaches of human intervention and sustained advocacy.

The Governor, speaking through the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, at the commissioning of the repaired embankment failures located within the premises of the Leadership Training Centre, Apapa, added that the newly repaired infrastructure will effectively address the problem of erosion which had posed a serious threat to lives and property in the area.

He commended the Federal Government, through the Ecological Fund Office (EFO), for its prompt response and leadership, which played a key role not only in ensuring the successful completion of the project but also averting the calamities that would have resulted from negligence and inaction on her part, stressing that “As a State, we are appreciative of this very important intervention from the Federal Government which would impact not only the training centre but also the environs”.

Earlier in his address, a member of Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, Senator Olalekan Mustapha, said the project is one of the 16th ecological interventions approved by President Muhammadu Buhari which was subsequently awarded by Federal Executive Council in March 2019.

While noting that the project is expected to address the devastating effect of erosion and flood menace in the School Community, he implored the community to take ownership of the project by preventing indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage channels, noting that it is the responsibility of the community to maintain the project and ensure its sustainability.

KILLING SPREE, REIGN OF TERROR AND THE AGONY OF HAPLESS CITIZENS By Ismael Taiwo T.COOL

INTRODUCTION
As William Shakespeare opined “there is no sure foundation set on blood, no certain life achieved by other’s death. Nigeria, a country filled with superfluous human and natural resources but built on faulty foundation has been battling with myriads of insecurity. In the 90s, what we used to witness was the robbery cases and petty theft as well as pen robbers. But the narrative has changed over a decade ago, the menace of kidnapping, banditry and terrorism even broad daylight robbery has stared us on our faces while we look helpless on where the practical solution can be sought for.

INSECURITY
In 2009, the terror of Bokoharam was widely pronounced in Nigeria and since that time we have been sleeping with one eye closed. Successive governments had promised to nip the menace in the bud but there seems to be no solution at sight as the terrorist gangs wax stronger everyday while the security agencies look incapacitated.
In the process that gave birth to current administration, President Buhari promised entire Nigerians that if given mandate the insecurity will be a thing of the past and some of us were overjoyous that the new Sheriff would save us from the nearly collapsed security structure under ex-president Goodluck Jonathan. Alas, rather than combating insecurity in Nigeria, the opposite is what we are witnessing as the insecurity has taken a new dimension. The menace of kidnapping, maiming and killing has continued to grow unabated and the citizens seem helpless.
Recently, more than 40 farmers who went out to work and put food on their tables met untimely death by these bloodsucking monsters who brazenly go on rampage unchecked. The unfortunate farmers were slaughtered in their respective farms. This is a twin problem, if they stay at home they might by killed by hunger and if they go to find food they might be killed by these bloodsucking monsters.
One wonders that a supposed Chief Security Officer of the State would have doubled up his effort at strengthening the security apparatus but it has always been usual cosmetic approach of ‘being on top of the situation’ when it is crystal clear that the country is falling into a pariah state.

HERDSMEN KILLINGS
Country people, as the guerilla tactics of Bokoharam gangs seem to be unabated, there comes Fulani herdsmen who brazenly graze on farms and destroy farmlands. As if illegal grazing could be the only deed of these marauders, they kill, kidnap and maim our brothers and sisters without being brought to book. If arrested, they find themselves back to the society to continue their dastardly acts. One asks, how can we get out of the woods? The answer is not farfetched, those who swore oaths of protecting the lives of Nigerians whether at the Federal or State levels should brace up and confront the monster holistically.
In the Southwest region, the Fulani marauders have taken over the forests, many people have met their untimely death in the hands of these killers. They have killed traditional rulers, scholars, business women and men. They had succeeded in sending farmers out of businesses owing to the fear of being killed in their farm settlement. As these atrocities going on in the country, one will expect President Buhari to act as the father of the nation and put a stop to the ongoing carnage by the killer herders. Rather, President Buhari in his usual nepotistic stance, made case for the killer herdsmen, emboldened them to continue doing their businesses at the detriment of farmers.

While calls made from different quarters to President Buhari to sack the service chiefs that have failed in discharging the duties assigned to them, Buhari rather than rewarding failure with failure continually eulogizing the service chiefs while the country is tearing apart, until recently when the President took the bold step by relieving them of their duties.

In recent times, Southwest region, having noticed that it security cannot be entrusted in the hands of Presidency any longer established Southwestern Security Network codenamed Amotekun to clear the region of criminal elements. This will continually generate tension in other regions who might want to be emboldened to come out with their security apparatus.

CONCLUSION
As the tension is high in the country, President Buhari needs to be up and doing as chief security officer to douse the tension. The inability of Presidency to live up to expectation and cage these marauders may lead to self-help whereby every region will raise militias to secure them.

She added that massive deployment of Police personnel and that of Sister Security Agencies have been put in place to forestall further crises.

“The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command wishes to inform the general public on the incident that occurred earlier today 28th January, 2021 at about 1145hrs at Odo-Osun Area of Mapo where Police personnel from Mapo Divisional Police Headquarters were deployed to effect the arrest of two notorious miscreants who have been deeply involved in the crisis rocking Shogoye/Akobi areas of Mapo lately.

“It can be recalled that armed thugs from Shogoye/Akobi Areas have been unleashing mayhem, causing grievous hurts and death of innocent citizens in the two areas. On the 25th of January, 2021 at about 0600hrs, an elderly woman in a white Celestial church cap known as Modupe Daramola ‘f’ aged 60 years of a Celestial church in Akobi area was hit with pellets from a locally made gun fired by one of the hoodlums during the clashes and gave up the ghost, while some other ones sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Post COVID-19 Economy: Gov. Makinde inaugurates committee on economic recovery

Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on Thursday, inaugurated the state Steering Committee on COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus Programme (State CARES), an initiative targeted at mitigating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the state.

The governor, while inaugurating members of the nine-man steering committee at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, said that the programme was meant for post-COVID-19 economic recovery.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted Governor Makinde as explaining that the programme will focus on three major areas, including expanding access to livelihood support, food security services and grants for the poor and vulnerable households and firms in the state.

He said: “We are here to inaugurate the CARES programme for Oyo State. The programme is aimed at mitigating the damage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“So, it is about post-COVID-19 economic recovery and we are looking at three major areas. We want to increase access to basic services such as health care. We want to take care of the poor and the vulnerable households within the state and we also want to strengthen the food supply chain for the poor households, because we know that once we are able to tackle hunger, people are able to think correctly.”

The governor also maintained that his administration had begun to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state since last year, as it has provided palliatives to the poor and vulnerable households as well as farmers in all the nooks and crannies of the state.

He added that the state was able to distribute farm inputs to farmers to increase food production and ensure food security post-COVID-19.

“We also want to support the MSMEs to navigate this difficult time. We already started taking this action since last year with the distribution of palliatives to the poor and vulnerable households. We also distributed farm inputs to farmers in the state to increase food production.

“We came up with the N1 billion MSME fund to provide credit at a single-digit interest rate to MSMEs in the state and while I was comparing a note with the focal point for that, the Director-General of the Oyo State Investment Promotion Agency (OYSIPA), he told me that about N500 million had been disbursed already and that they still have other applications. So, we have been doing most of these things.

“The programme is not just a grant or giving money to us, it is a programme for results. So, we have to spend the money first and the World Bank will have to confirm that we have spent the money on those things that we said we are going to spend the money on.

“With this, we can even do more apart from what we have been doing on our own to help our economy recover from the effect of COVID-19 and the economic meltdown occasioned by the drop in oil prices, which have been affecting the federal allocation coming to the state.”

Speaking earlier, the state’s Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Akinola Ojo, stated that the CARES Programme is a World Bank-assisted programme for results, with the sum of $750 million already earmarked by the Bank to support the 36 states of the federation and the FCT.

“This P for R, which is the programme for results, initiative is aimed at mitigating the devastating effect of the coronavirus pandemic on the livelihood of the poor, vulnerable households amongst us as well as to help cushion the effects of this pandemic on the economic activities of the respective states.

“The objective of the programme is to basically expand access to livelihood support, food security services, grants for the poor, vulnerable households and organisations,” the commissioner said.

He added that the objective of the programme will be measured using free-result indicators, including the number of beneficiaries targeted, who have access to basic social services, the number of farmers supported to increase food production and a number of vulnerable and viable firms supported by the programmes.

Akinola further stated that the programme similarly outlines a two-year financial support to the state to fulfill programme development objectives in three key areas such as cash transfers and livelihood support to poor and vulnerable households, increasing food security and safe functioning of food supply chain for the poor households and facilitating the recovery of Medium and Small Scale Enterprises.

Members of the steering committee include the Commissioner for Finance, who is the chairman of the committee; Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Alhaja Faosat Sanni; Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Ojemuyiwa Ojekunle; Commissioner for Trade, Industries and Cooperatives, Hon. Adebisi Adeniyi.

Ile-Ife monarch, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has warned popular Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, to be careful of politicians seeking to hijack his agitations against killer herdsmen in the South West.

The monarch while granting an interview with Arise TV advised Igboho not to take the laws into his hands but to allow constituted authorities to handle the herdsmen menace in the region.

The Ooni, however, commended Igboho for taking on the campaign against herdsmen, adding that He (Igboho) has done well and the world has heard him, but everything should be done in moderation.

He, however, warned him to back down so that government can take over the battle to avoid politicians hijacking the movement.

The monarch said;“Let us be very objective. He (Igboho) is being a mouthpiece for the downtrodden. He came up and everybody is listening now but my advice to him as a traditional ruler is that he needs to be very careful so that the politicians won’t hijack the whole motive from him.

“Igboho has done well and has been praised, but he shouldn’t take laws into his hands.

“We have the governor in the state who is the chief security officer of the state and Mr President has invited him (Makinde).“Let the right authorities do what is right.

Ban foreign jeans, promote local fabrics, Oluwo tasks FG

The Paramount Ruler of Iwoland, HIM Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, has tasked the federal government to consider outright ban of foreign jeans to promote local fabrics and boost Nigeria’s economy.

As a custodian of culture, Oluwo lamented the infiltration of religion into our cultural values most especially the Yorubas, saying traditional rulers have role to play in distinctively differentiate Yoruba culture from religion.

Oba Akanbi explained he has earlier discussed partnership deal with the Bank of Industry (BOI) but not yielding as expected. He expressed the hope in federal government’s involvement to embrace and domesticate production of various dresses such as suit, jeans and Agbada with local Ofi.

He expressed displeasure over lumping the rich Yoruba culture with idolatry, saying no enlightened person will embrace scaring religion.

Oba Akanbi explained that the youths and teenagers could not be forced to start wearing Aso Oke except the fabric was sewn to suit their needs.

The monarch, who had sewn the fabrics into different trendy styles for male and female, said he would partner celebrities, especially Nigerian Government to sew new styles to gain acceptability among youths.

Oba Akanbi through a statement by his press secretary, Alli Ibraheem, reads “I want to task the federal government to outrightly ban importation of foreign jeans into Nigeria, promote local jeans made of Ofi to aid job opportunities and advantages”

“It is about using our own fabrics to make clothes of western dresses which our kids like. You must think like the children and the youths if you want to influence them in any way”

“We cannot compel our youths and teenagers to start wearing agbada made of Aso Oke or Aso Ofi. But now I have branded our Aso Oke as Telu Jeans and Telu Jeans is normal jeans trousers, shorts and jacket made of Aso Oke”

“Our traditional clothes and accessories such as Ofi and beads are demonstration of rich culture and luxuries of wealth. So enticing and admiring but because a people affiliated wearing Ofi and using some cultural accessories as paganism, our children begin to run away from it”

“You only see a Yoruba child wearing Ofi and using beads at either wedding or naming ceremony. You can’t see Alfa or Pastor wearing Ofi or using beads to Mosque or Church. Why?”

“I will lead the struggle to clean our culture and promote cultural accessories. I will provide technical requirements to assist the government in actualization of the dream”

“Aso Oke will also be used to sew suits and all office, school and religious wears. This will increase the demand for this local fabric and create jobs for our people who are weavers. It will also promote our culture and we will spend less money on importation of foreign clothes.

“It is about using our own fabrics to make clothes of the western world which our kids like. You must think like the children and the youths if you want to influence them in any way”.

“As traditional rulers, we have the role of clearly differentiating between the rich Yoruba culture and religion. The infiltration is scaring to our children. The culture has been lumped with traditional religion. It is disheartening. Our culture is clean. It has to be promoted and clearly distinguished to make it adorable and admirable to our generations”
