COVID-19: Osun begins vaccination of over 800 combined 2020/2021 intending pilgrims

Osun Government has disclosed that over 800 intending pilgrims to this year’s Hajj will be vaccinated as part of the requirements for visiting the Holy Land.

The exercise is in compliance with the directive of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) in accordance with the safety guidelines of National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).

This is even as the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Hon. Tajudeen Olaniyi Lawal, said the Administration of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola was committed to citizens’ welfare, healthy living, safety and general well-being.

Recall that the leadership of NAHCON had earlier directed all the 36 States’ pilgrims welfare boards, including the FCT and Armed Forces in the country, to urgently give Covid-19 Vaccination to all 2021 Hajj intending pilgrims, so as to meet up with the average of 12 weeks’ interval required for pilgrims to take two rounds of vaccination before the Hajj exercise.

Addressing the registered intending pilgrims during the flag- off of the vaccination exercise at the premises of the State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, State Government Secretariat, Abere, Osogbo, Home Affairs Commissioner, Hon. Tajudeen Lawal said the board had received enough doses to cater for the needs of the intending pilgrims.

He said the Administration of Governor Oyetola would continue to do the needful and would prioritise the people’s welfare as it has been doing since inception.

Lawal who said the State had recorded many successes and received several commendations and accolades for its annual outstanding performance, assured the intending pilgrims of seamless and hitch-free exercise.

“First and foremost, I have to commend our amiable Governor for his prompt support over the years. He has shown to us that he is a leader, a worthy leader whose passion and love for the welfare and general well-being of the citizens is second to none.

“As you all know, Nigeria and other parts of the world couldn’t perform Hajj last year. We are considering combining registered intending pilgrims for the year 2020 and 2021.

“So far so good, about 800 people have registered and hopefully, all of them would be vaccinated in line with the directive of the NAHCON.

“I am appealing to our people to take this exercise seriously and conduct themselves with topmost Omoluabi ethos whenever they are in the Holy Land because this is what we are known for”, Lawal added.

Addressing the journalists during the exercise, the Secretary, Osun Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Mr. Bolaji Sanni, said the exercise was designed to adhere to and fulfill all necessary safety requirements as laid down by the health authorities.

According to him, the intending pilgrims are expected to take two doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines before they leave Nigeria for Saudi Arabia.

“This vaccination exercise is in line with the directive of the the NAHCON to vaccinate all the intending pilgrims as part of the necessities for this year’s Hajj.

“Since the Hajj exercise for this year is expected to commence in June, we are under obligation to carry out the vaccination exercise to meet up with the deadline.

“This first phase of the vaccination exercise will end by April while the second dose will be taken early June as the intending pilgrims are expected to depart Nigeria for Saudi Arabia by the middle of June.

“We are ready to complete the exercise for all of them. Though we have the combined list of 2020 and 2021 running to 800 registered intending pilgrims so far, some are still registering and we are committed to ensuring that everybody is fairly treated,” Sanni added.

Some of the intending pilgrims that spoke to journalists after being jabbed commended the exercise and the State government for its prompt response to the current health reality.

Maximizing Employment Quota From Government Institutions in Ibadanland for Indigenes is one of My Goal as CCII PG – PRINCE OLUYEMISI ADEAGA

In response to a question on solving issues of the employment quota in Federal Ministries, and all Federal Agencies asked by a member of CCII to the two leading contestants for the position of President General, Prince Adeaga in his response made it known that his team will work together with Federal Character Commission in addressing the issue.

It should also be of note that Prince Adeaga currently have over 40 Ibadan Indigenes working in his oil and gas establishment. This is a pointer to the fact that he’s not only capable of the position, but he is an experienced Administrator with many years of Service in both Private and Public sector.

Read his full response below:

By the grace of Almighty, if elected and when I resume office as the PG after Friday April 2 elections, my team and I will work together with Federal Character Commission towards ensuring that the Golden rule that guide employment of the indigenes is adhered to, especially, the junior and intermediate officers.
The Corporate Social Responsibility of Companies operating in the land would also be explored.

A relevant committee would also constantly link up with Ibadan indigenes who work in these agencies to monitor their recruitment exercises. This is to enable our proactiveness towards taking the right steps at the right time. I will also ensure that we safely fraternise with the CEOs of private organizations with employment capabilities, to enable us promote their confidence in CCII and secure their interests in Ibadanland. One of such ways is inviting them to many and relevant activities of CCII.

The previous and present CCII administrations have been doing this and I really commend the efforts made to date for the initiative as the Heads of some Federal agencies participated in the last Ibadan week.

During my time as the Chairman of Ibadan Week between 2011 & 2012, we extended our award night tentacles to the University of Ibadan (UI) and some other Federal establishments as our vision for inclusiveness.

I will make sure that the CCII under me will improve on the robust relationship with all the CEOs of Federal agencies based in Ibadan as well as all corporate organizations. When we secure their affection, having our rights and privileges from them to the benefits of our job seeking population would be with seamless ease. In fact, with these steps, it is foreseeable that some of them would be inviting our attention to job vacancies in their organizations.

I humbly repeat that this is part of our Manifesto as distributed last Friday.

Thank you

Prince Adeaga Oluyemisi. A
President General Candidate 2021

#EndSARS: Lagos Panel Awards Four Petitioners N16.25m Cheques

The Lagos State Judicial Panel on Restitution for victims of SARS and other related matters has handed out cheques to four deserving petitioners.

At the resumed sitting on Saturday, the panel gave decisions in six petitions and found that the four of them were able to prove their cases successfully.

The petitioners, comprising three women and a man, received a total of N16.25 million in total.

A breakdown of the amount shows that the three women received cheques of N10 million, N5 million, and N750,000 respectively, while the man got a cheque of N500,000.

They took turns to receive the cheques from the Chairman of the Panel, Justice Doris Okuwobi.

The Chairman of the Panel, Justice Doris Okuwobi, presents a cheque to one of the deserving petitioners on March 27, 2021.

Following the presentation of the cheques to the petitioners, the panel moved on to the cross-examination of a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Babatunde Lawson, from Reddington Hospital.

However, the cross-examination of the medical practitioner was stalled because the counsel to the Lagos State government who was meant to take him through the process was absent.

Thereafter, the panel listened to the testimony of another petitioner, Samuel Ashola, who was at the venue of the Lekki tollgate protest in October 2020.

Petitions breakdown

The first petitioner on Saturday, Felicia Opara, was a young woman who was captured in a viral video on Oct 12, 2020, following an alleged assault by some police officers in the Ojuelegba area of Lagos.

Among other things, the panel found that the culture of impunity and violence is rampant among some police officers in Nigeria.

The panel also found that there is sometimes an inability of the authorities to bring perpetrators of torture to book.

The panel therefore recommended an apology by the police to the petitioner, Felicia Opara.

The panel also recommended training of the police on human rights law & enforcement as well as the need to make policemen take responsibility for their actions.

The panel then awarded compensation to the petitioner in the sum of N750,000.

The second petitioner, Tolulope Openiyi was compensated with the sum of N10m.

The panel found that she successfully proved that her husband, Olusegun was shot dead in August 2017, by a police officer, Jide Akinola, attached to the Sabo, Yaba police station.

The panel found that there was no contrary evidence offered by the police to her testimony that her husband was shot at a police checkpoint.

The panel also found that though the police authorities arrested the erring police officer, his investigation was not properly conducted as he was later released.

The panel therefore recommended the prosecution of the police officer. The panel also recommended scholarship for one child of the victim.

Other general recommendations made by the panel include public condemnation and immediate sanctioning of police officers where necessary and an adequate and speedy compensation of victims and their families with the cost of compensation to be set aside by the Nigerian Government for the police.

The third petitioner, Francis Idum was alleged to be a victim of extrajudicial killing by a SARS officer during a cult clash, sometime in July, 2019

Witnesses who testified in the petition filed by family members of the deceased claimed police officers from Area F police command also took away his body.

In reaching its decision, the panel found that none of the witnesses who testified was an eye witness to the incident as they could not give direct evidence of the person who shot the deceased.

The panel also found that the evidence of the police on its movement of arms register for the day of the incident showed that only AK47 rifles were signed out for use and not a pistol as was allegedly used on the victim.

In the final analysis the panel recalled that there was a cult clash on the day and the balance of probability and the preponderance of evidence tilted more in favor of the police.

The panel was therefore unable to recommend compensation for the petitioner as it was not proved that the gunshot which caused his death was a weapon handled by the police.

The panel however recommended that the police conducts a better investigation by commissioning an independent outfit vested with the mandate to unravel the circumstances that lead to the death of the petitioner.

In the fourth decision involving Oladoyin Ademola, the panel was also unable to recommend monetary compensation.

The panel held that the petitioner did not connect the cataract he suffers in his eye to acts of assault allegedly perpetrated on him by men of the Nigerian police.

The panel however recommended that the DPO and officers at the Dopemu check point and police station as at the date of the incident should be investigated.

The fifth petitioner, Blessing Omoregie Esanbor was compensated with the sum of N5m.

The panel found that though her police assailant, Emmanuel Okujor was imprisoned for 17 years for the offence, the petitioner still has a permanent disability and requires plastic surgery to fix her face.

The panel also recommended periodic psychological evaluation of policemen especially those who bear arms.

The sixth petitioner, Tella Adesanya, an officer of Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Services under the Min. of Agriculture, was awarded N500,000 compensation for his unlawful arrest for three days, the seizure of his car since 2018 till date, extortion and for the trauma he suffered at the hands of the police officers.

The panel also recommended the immediate release of his car.
