Ex-Nigeria’s President, Obasanjo Pays Condolence Visit To Olubadan’s Widow

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo this morning visited the widow of the late Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, who died in the early hours of Sunday after five years on the throne.

Obasanjo arrived at the Popoyemoja palace of the late king around 7:10 am with Olayiwola Olakojo, a former secretary to the Oyo state government and left 30 minutes later.

He was received on arrival at the palace by Olubadan’s widow, Rasheedat, and Gbonka Balogun of Ibadan, Nureni Akanbi, who is also an elder brother to Rasheedat.
The former president prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed monarch and promised his readiness to assist the family whenever the need arises.

In a tribute he wrote in the condolence register, Obasanjo said: “Kabiesi, sun re. You lived for the service of family, community, state and the nation. You served committedly and God granted you longevity. We pray that your soul will be with your creator and the family and community will continue to thrive.”

Man Arrested With Fresh Human Parts In Igege, Osun State

Operatives of Osun Security Network Agency codenamed Amotekun on Wednesday arrested a suspect with mutilated human parts.

The suspect arrested in Igege town in Ola-Oluwa Southeast Local Council Development Authority in the state was almost lynched by resident before he was rescued by Amotekun operatives.

It was gathered that the man was accosted by residents and was forced to unpacked the content of his “Ghana must Go” bag, which was discovered to be part of human body.

Although the suspect in the recorded video was heard saying he was set up by someone, the residents around him were beaten him intermittently until he was ferried away by Amotekun Corps to their office in Telemu.

Confirming the incident, Chairman, Ola-Oluwa Southeast LCDA, Sunday Olaifa demanded comprehensive investigation into how the suspect found the part caught in his possession.

He said the man has been taken to Osogbo, the state capital to avoid a situation where residents may try to lynch him in the area.

“It is true the man was caught with body parts, but we demand that the case be diligently investigated as the suspect claimed he was set up by his “supposed” son-in-law, hence, the matter should be properly investigated”, he said.

Meanwhile, Osun police spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola said the Commissioner of Police has been briefed of the incident and personnel have been deployed to the scene, but added that further details would be communicated to journalists later.

Sylvester Oromoni’s Death: Lagos Clears All Suspects In Police Custody

The government of Lagos state has cleared five employees and five students of Dowen college who were said to have been suspects involved in the death of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni.

Following the advice of the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, MS. Adetutu Oshinusi which was addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department,SCID and the trial magistrate, Magistrate Olatunbosun Adeola, where it was made known that the final autopsy reports released by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and the toxicology report of post mortem samples and that of Central Hospital, Warri shows the same result as the cause of death taged; Septicaemia, Lobar Pneumonia with Acute Pyelonephritis, Pyomyositis of the right ankle and Acute Bacteria Pneumonia due to severe Sepsis.

According to the DPP’s advice, the result of all this reports gotten at the hospitals also did not indicate the presence of any toxic or poisonous substance in the body of the deceased. The legal advice therefore concluded that there is no suspected case of murder or involuntary manslaughter or wrong feeling of administering of poison, with an intention to cause harm.

The state also cleared the minors; Favour Benjamin aged 16, Micheal Kashamu (15), Edward Begue (16), Ansel Temile (14) and Kenneth Inyang (15) of accusations of belonging to an unlwaful society as there is no sufficient proof to establish the offence.

Explaining that the investigation carried out by the police did not reveal that any secret society name, tattoo or insignia of any unlawful society was found in the possession of any of the suspects during the police investigation, adding that to hold otherwise would amount to sniffing for an offence and a speculative act which the law does not permit.

The school as a whole and five of its employee: Celina Uduak, Valentine Igboekweze, Hammed Ayomo Bariyu, Adesanya Olusesan Olusegun and one Adeyemi were cleared of the offence of Negligent Act Causing Harm contrary to section 252 of the Crimina Law Ch. C17, Vol.3, Laws of Lagos State 2015.
The state then orderd the release of all suspects if they are still held in custody.

The crisis rocking the ascendancy of Olubadan throne after the demise of Oba Saliu Adetunji Ajeogunguniso 1 has taken a new dimension as the former governor of Oyo State and Osi Olubadan of Ibadan, has spoken at last about the controversy surrounding who replaces the late monarch.

This is coming after the meeting held yesterday by 10 kingmakers at Mapo Hall where they affirmed the sacrosant of the Olubadan 1957 Declaration and made a pronouncement that Senator Lekan Balogun is the new Olubadan.

The Osi Olubadan, Senator who made the clarification today when he received visitors at his Bodija house, said the Otun Olubadan, Lekan Balogun is the next in line to succeed the departed Oba Adetunji.

Appealing for calm the high chief, “Uninformed people are just causing unnecessary tensions in Ibadan. There is no controversy about who becomes the next Olubadan after the demise of Oba Saliu Adetunji Aje Ogunguniso 1”.

This was just he clarified that he had no hand in the letter written by an Ibadan-born lawyer and former justice commissioner, Barr. Michael Lana.

Recalls that with the exemption of Ladoja, Balogun and others have been elevated to Obaship status by the administration of late former governor Abiola Ajimobi, an action that is subject of litigation and discussion in Ibadan.

OLUBADAN: Return Home And Show Emphathy— Adeolu Akande Tells Makinde

Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, Professor Adeolu Akande has pleaded with Engr Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State to return from wherever he is to take charge of the affairs of the state.

In a statement in Ibadan yesterday,Professor Akande stated that it is unthinkable that a royal father of the calibre of the late Olubadan would join his ancestors for almost a week and the governor would be comfortable staying away from the state.

“Governance is a responsibility. Governor Makinde should know that he is responsible to the people of Oyo State who voted him into office by returning home to show responsibility at this time. Governance is about empathy. Governor Makinde should return home to show empathy to the family of the late Olubadan, the good people of Ibadanland and Oyo State in general.

“It is unthinkable that the state will be undergoing the present controversy over the exalted throne of Olubadan, one of the foremost and respected in Africa, and the governor will be sitting pretty comfortably or playing golf somewhere at a time like this. I plead with Governor Seyi Makinde to please return home immediately and take charge of the state”, Professor Akande pleaded.

Dowen College: Falana Fumes At Lagos Govt’s Decision To Exonerate Suspects

Shortly after the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution, Adetutu Osinusi, issued a legal advice exonerating the staff and five students of Dowen College arrested over the death of an 11-year-old student of the school, Sylvester Oromoni,Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) has reacted.

Within Nigeria had earlier reported that the DPP in its legal advice sent to the police and the court trying the case of Oromoni’s death, stated that the two autopsies conducted on the body of the deceased failed to establish a case of murder and that a final autopsy report issued by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and toxicology report of post-mortem samples established the cause of death as Septicaemia, Lobar Pneumonia with Acute Pyelonephritis, Pyomyositis of the right ankle and Acute Bacteria Pneumonia due to severe Sepsis and that no harmful substance was found in late Oromoni’s body.

The state government, therefore, concluded that based on the findings, there was no prima facie case of murder, involuntary manslaughter and or malicious administering of poison with intent to harm against the suspects including Favour Benjamin (16), Micheal Kashamu (15), Edward Begue (16), Ansel Temile (14) and Kenneth Inyang (15).

Reacting to this development, Falana who is the counsel to the Oromoni family, said the legal advice had not laid to rest allegations of murder levelled against the suspects. He argued that the legal advice was hasty owing to the fact that the Chief Coroner of Lagos State ordered that an inquest be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the unnatural death of Sylvester Oromoni.

The inquest which commenced before the Coroner on December 16, 2021 has been adjourned to January 15, 2022 for further hearing, Falana noted.

His statement reads

“Our attention has been drawn to the report issued by the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions of Lagos State dated January 4, 2022 which has purportedly cleared five students and five employees of Dowen College of any complicity in the death of the 12-year old Sylvester Oromini Jr.

However, the report has not laid the allegations surrounding the gruesome murder of Sylvester Oromoni to rest. The report is escapist and hasty as the Authorities are aware of the fact that the Chief Coroner of Lagos State has ordered that an inquest be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the unnatural death of Sylvester Oromoni.

The inquest which commenced before the Coroner on December 16, 2021 has been adjourned to January 15, 2022 for further hearing.”
