Owner of collapsed Lagos building arrested as death toll rises

At least three dead bodies have been recovered from the rubbles of a three-storey building that collapsed on Saturday afternoon at Akanbi Crescent, Yaba, Lagos State.

Two persons have also been rescued by emergency workers.

The incident comes a few months after the collapse of a 21-storey building that claimed the lives of 45 persons at Gerrard Road, Ikoyi area of the state.

It was gathered that a section of the building, which was still under construction, collapsed on another building beside it.

An eyewitness who spoke with the media said a part of the building had collapsed last year.

When contacted, Director-General (DG), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyitolu, told The Guardian that the agency was working to rescue more people who may be trapped in the rubbles.

“The building was said to have shown signs on Thursday and when one of the neighbours called their attention to it, they told him off,” Ibrahim Farinloye, National Emergency Management Agency acting zonal coordinator, southwest, said.

The State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Idris Salako, said in a statement that Lagos State Building Control Agency sealed off the construction site in 2021.

He said work resumed without authorisation.

”Preliminary findings indicated that the site had been sealed off twice by the Lagos State Building Control Agency in 2021 for non-compliance with building regulations, after which the site was abandoned,” Salako said.

“However, the developer later broke the government seal, sneaked into the site and recommenced construction without official authorisation.

“As at 9:00 p.m., one person had been pulled out alive, while two deaths were recorded.

Tinubu is suffering from Urinary Calamity — Farooq Kperogi

A popular social commentator and a columnist at Nigerian Tribune, Prof. Farooq Kperogi has claimed that national leader of APC and presidential aspirant in 2023 general election is suffering from urinary disorder.

This was contained in a statement made available by the Prof via his official Facebook account as read in part:

“When I read about the widely circulated scatological disaster that occurred to Tinubu when he flew to Minna on January 20 to seek IBB’s blessing for his presidential run, I dismissed it as probably a made-up anecdote by his political opponents.

“Then came the video of Tinubu in what appears like a mortifying urinary calamity at the palace of the Awujale of the Ijebuland on Saturday, there’s now no doubt that Tinubu is way sicker than we ever thought–and than Buhari has ever been.

“I hope his wife– and people who truly love him– will be kind enough to advise him to stop subjecting himself to further public humiliation by giving up his presidential ambition and going to take care of his health. I may die before him, but Aso Rock is not a hospice.

“I sincerely feel sorry for the man, but I’m even more sorry for a country that considers someone like that as an option to be president”.

Makinde Has Abandoned The Political Structure That Got Him Elected In 2019 – Demola Omotosho

A Chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party and former Local Government Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, Demola Omotoso has accused Governor Seyi Makinde of abandoning the political structure that fought for his victory in the 2019 gubernatorial election stating that many of those who are now his Lieutenants are alien to the struggle that gave him victory in the last poll or they were on the other side then.

He therefore advised the Governor to look for those who worked for his victory in 2019 with the same zeal he used in the build-up to the last election. He asked him to court them all over.

Omotoso who was Aanuoluwapo Omorinde’s guest on this week’s edition of BOTTOM LINE on IBR 92.5fm Ibadan said “it annoys me whenever we demand justice and some people talk about the vault being opened. I was the returning Officer for my party, the PDP in my local government in the 2019 gubernatorial election. If you don’t understand what politics is, you don’t get such assignment! My local government produced the highest votes for the governor in the election and that shows how much we worked but all of a sudden, we were sidelined. All we are asking for, is justice and equity. Many of those who are now with the governor are aliens to the struggle then”.

He speaks further “there was practically no meeting called then, that I did not attend to ensure that Engineer Seyi Makinde win the election. I know the governor to be a deliberate person. He doesn’t just take decisions without thinking it through. So, I want to believe that he is also deliberate in his decision to sideline some of us but I advise him to change”.
He alleged that there are plans to also sideline him in his local government.

“One thing I will not condone is the plan to sideline in my local government. By all standards, if you call for PDP Leaders in my local government using the two parameters, I am qualified but there are plans to sideline me too. Those who are parading themselves as leaders of the party in Ibadan North Local Government have at one time or the other left the party except for myself and Chief Hazeem Gbolarumi who have not left the PDP since inception. I joined the PDP in year 2000 and since then, I have never left the party and will not for whatsoever reason leave”.

When asked if he was aware of his appointment as Chairman, Governing Council, the Polytechnic Ibadan, Omotoso said he was never given any appointment because he was not officially informed. He however admitted that he heard of what played out but said he was not interested in talking about it.

When reminded that Governor Seyi Makinde facilitated a national assignment at the party level for him in 2019 and that the same man cannot turn against him, the former Local Government boss said “all these things are not beggarly. I laboured and worked for my party. I served as the Executive Chairman of my local government twice and in Caretaker capacity twice. So, I have lived for the PDP.

“There are three elected Executive positions in Nigeria; that of the President, Governor and the Chairman. I am happy to have served as a Chairman. So, as regards the national assignment, I have paid my due.”

Why I first informed Buhari about my presidential ambition – Tinubu discloses as Alake, Awujale endorses ambition

The National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Saturday, said he informed President Muhammadu Buhari of his presidential ambition in order not to offend him.

Tinubu said this was done in order not to create bad blood between him and President Buhari, saying he did not want to offend Buhari by “pulling the carpet from his feet.”

The former Lagos State Governor spoke on Saturday when he visited the Alake and paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, at his Ake palace in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Tinubu, who recently visited Buhari to inform him of his 2023 ambition, had earlier visited Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona at his Ijebu-Ode palace, Ogun State.

“I told him as the number one citizen, I should start my Presidential bid by informing you first, and he (Buhari) told me to inform the whole world, and I have done that.”

The APC chieftain recalled that he had served as a senator at a young age, adding that he clocked the age of 50 while serving as governor.

He spoke further that, “I have done crusades to return Nigeria to democracy before I started hearing the voices of the people that I should contest for president. I have thought about it deeply, but I cannot think about it alone.

“The people said, this time around, I should run for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I told them that we have elected someone there and I don’t want to pull the carpet from his feet.”

Tinubu said he was in Ogun to seek the permission of the monarchs to contest for president and to also seek their blessings.

“I want to seek the permission of the Kabiyesi. I want to seek his blessings and prayers from other chiefs.

“I’m here to tell you (Alake) that, I want your prayers and I want to inform you that I want to become the president.”

Responding, the Alake prayed for Tinubu to achieve his ambition, expressing optimism that, “if Tinubu becomes the president, Nigeria will be better for it.”
