N702m scam: Doyin Okupe pays N13m conviction fine, escapes two-year jail term

The director general of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign council, Doýin Okupe, has quickly paid N13m fine in order not to serve his two and half years jail term.

An Abuja federal high court presided over by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu had on Monday sentenced Okupe to two years and 6 months over money laundering to the tone of N702m.

Justice Ojukwu considering the pleadings for leniency from Doyin Okupe’s wife, Mrs Omolola Okupe and his son, Adesunkanmi Okupe and therefore gave an option of N500,000 fine on each of the 26 counts for which he was found guilty.

Consequently, Okupe paid N13m fine and therefore will no longer be serving a jail term. However, he remains an ex-convict until his conviction is upturned by an appeal court.
