Datti Will Debate With Your Preferred Candidate Not You, LP Replies Wole Soyinka

He was reacting to a one-on-one debate challenge extended to him by Soyinka over the opinion he expressed in recent interview.

The vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said that there is no political basis to debate with Prof. Wole Soyinka on the outcome of the February 25 presidential election.

Reacting to a one-on-one debate challenge to him by Soyinka over his views on the constitutionality of inaugurating President-elect, Bola Tinubu, Baba-Ahmed told the Nobel laureate to instead bring his preferred candidates to debate him.

In a statement by the Obi-Datti Media Office on Saturday, the LP vice-presidential candidate said his decision not to take Soyinka up on his offer was not out of cowardice but for cultural and political reasons.

He said one of the reasons he would not debate the celebrated writer is that he was not on any of the opposing ballots in the election. Datti, however, said that if Soyinka could use his influence to bring out his preferred candidates for the debate, he was willing to take them on.

Baba-Ahmed had on Wednesday, March 22, called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Chief Justice of Nigeria not to swear in Tinubu, whom INEC declared as the President-Elect, insisting that declaring Tinubu the winner and issuing him a certificate of return was against the constitution.

The 53-year-old, who was a guest on Channels TV’s Politics Today, went on to stress that “whoever swears in Mr Tinubu” has “ended democracy” in Nigeria, a position that did not sit well with Soyinka and several other prominent Nigerians.

Reacting to Baba-Ahmed’s controversial position, the Nobel laureate described the remarks as a “kind of do-or-die attitude and provocation” that goes contrary to democratic disposition.

Soyinka said the LP vice-presidential candidate tried to “dictate to the supreme arbiter of the nation”, adding that it was unacceptable.

See full statement by the Obi-Datti Media Office below:

DATTI BABA-AHMED WILL NOT DEBATE PROF. SOYINKA. Like many Nigerians we are bewildered by the late hour intervention of our respected Nobel laureate Prof Wole Soyinka in issues around the flawed 2023 elections.

Where was he all this while? One of those who should ordinarily and rightfully be honoured as the conscience of the nation, Prof. Soyinka is now criminalising dissent and infact weighing in on the side of fraud and injustice! We state therefore that the vice-presidential candidate of Labour Party, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed cannot take up Prof. Soyinka’s offer of a public debate, not out of cowardice, but for cultural and political reasons.

Culturally it’s just not decent, their age and accomplishment gaps taken into account, for Datti to sit opposite the 88 year-old global icon and point out his folly to his face, even if the old man called for it. And politically there is no basis for such a challenge in that Prof. is not on any of the opposite ballots.

If however he can use his influence to drag his preferred candidates, who resisted debates throughout the campaign, to the studio this second, Datti says he is more than willing to take them on. Signed: Obi-Datti Media Office.

Self-Imposed Labour Party Chairman, Lamidi Apapa Plotted By Tinubu To Take Over Party’s Affairs – Obi’s Supporters

The supporters of Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi in the last general elections have begun reacting to the crisis rocking the party in recent time. They have attributed the crisis to the manipulation and plot carefully orchestrated by president-elect, Bola Tinubu to take over the party affairs in order to install his stooge that would later withdraw the petition filed against him.

Recall, ODUDUWA NEWS had earlier reported how Police took over the national secretariat of the Party in Abuja as a result of crisis rocking the party.

Some members of the National Working Committee of the Labour Party (LP) led by the Deputy National Chairman of the party (South) Lamidi Apapa have taken over the affairs of the party following a court judgment restraining Julius Abure and three others from parading themselves as national officers of the party.

The development took place in Abuja on Thursday during an emergency meeting of the LP National Working Committee (NWC).

Lamidi said he is now the Acting National Chairman of the party while Saleh Lawan is the Acting National Secretary.

According to him, Abure and the three others must vacate the order of the Federal High Court retraining them before further action can be taken on the leadership of the party.

The emergence NWC meeting also reinstated Executive Council members from Ogun State, Rivers State, and Gombe State.

Eze Indigbo Remanded For Allegedly Threatening Lagos With Proscribed IPOB Sect

A Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in the Sabo area of Yaba, Lagos has ordered the remand of a leader of the Igbo community, Eze Ndigbo Fredrick Nwajagu, for allegedly threatening to bring the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to the state.

Chief Magistrate Peter Nwaka ordered that the defendant should be kept at the Ikoyi custodial facility for 30 days pending the legal advice of the State’s Director of Public Prosecution.

The Chief Magistrate made this order on Wednesday after Nwajagu aged 67 was docked before the court by the police on a two count charge of conspiracy and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.
The police prosecutor, SP Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the Eze Ndigbo and some others at large committed the offences on March 26 at No. 2, Akeem Shitu Street, Ajao Estate, Lagos State.

He alleged that Nwajagu put fear in Lagos residents when he threatened to bring IPOB to the state. Nwajagu was also said to have publicly stated that IPOB would shut Lagos State for one month.

According to Nurudeen, this alleged offences contravene Sections 168 (d) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Being a remand proceeding to ensure lawful detention, the plea of the defendant was not taken.

The Chief Magistrate said he would await the advice of the state’s DPP, Dr Babajide Martins on how to proceed before adjourning the case to May 3 for mention.

Yakubu song: I don’t fear death, I’ll rather go down fighting for justice – Falz

Nigerian hip-hop artist, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has revealed why he does confrontational music.

In a recent interview with Arise TV, Falz said he was not afraid of death, stressing that life in Nigeria is not meaningful.

The multi-talented entertainer featured on the programme ‘Music as a Socio-political Tool’, on the heels of his latest song with his colleague, Vector – ‘Yakubu‘, titled after the chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

The rappers, in the song, called out INEC, its chairman and other political parties allegedly involved in the electoral malpractices in the just-concluded general elections.

According to Falz, he would rather go down fighting for justice than to remain silent and die from the failed system of the country.

The rapper, who joined the programme via Skype from the United Kingdom, explained that he was not abroad because he was afraid of confrontation from state actors over the controversial song.

He said, “I knew that was going to come up when you announced that I was doing this from London. Like I said earlier on, this is not the first time, this is not the second time, this is not the third time.

“I have released tons of records that are very confrontational. And I was on ground. I’m always on ground when I released these records.

“It is not to say that I’m running anywhere. Absolutely not. Everyone know where to find me. If anyone wants to find me. But I have no reason to fear anything. And I always say this when people ask me ‘how do you do these things without any fear of consequences?’

“And this is the same answer that I always give: the kind of life we are living already is one which we are more or less fading away already. It’s not a meaningful life what we have in Nigeria as a country.

“What’s the worst that could happen? It’s death. I don’t fear death. I would rather go down fighting for a just cause. I would rather be remembered as someone that lived a life that was meaningful rather than someone that for example was walking down the road and got run over by a danfo [bus] because he was driving recklessly.

“Or, someone that got a heart disease and could not save himself because there are no hospitals capable of saving him in Nigeria,” Falz added.

Crisis Deepens In Afenifere As Yoruba Youths Ask Ayo Adebanjo To Resign

The Yoruba Afenifere Youths Organisation of Nigeria (YAYON) has asked Ayo Adebanjo, leader of the socio-political group, to resign from his position.

The organisation accused Adebanjo of abandoning the “uncompromising pursuit and defence of the interest of the Yoruba people”.

In a communiqué by Eric Oluwole, national youth leader, YAYON asked Adebanjo to provide “substantial reasons for attacking and maligning” Bola Tinubu, president-elect.

The group condemned the removal of two national officers of Afenifere — Jare Ajayi, the national publicity secretary, and Abagun Kole Omololu, national organising secretary.

“But we noted sadly that Afenifere began to derail from this long-head philosophy as soon as our father, Baba Ayo Adebanjo took up the position of acting leader,” the organisation said.

“He abandoned the uncompromising pursuit and defence of the interest of the Yoruba people for whatever reasons.

“We noted sadly too, that rather than rally the Yoruba people behind their son, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, now the president-elect of Nigeria, to emerge as president of this great country.

“Baba Adebanjo campaigned vigorously against him, and even after his well-deserving and hard-earned victory through a credible presidential election, he still wants the presidency out of Yorubaland.
“We noted for the purpose of clarity that Pa Ayo Adebanjo is not the Leader of Afenifere, but the acting leader authorised by Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

“We make bold to say that the action of making Pa Adebanjo the acting leader is in line with the precedence in our rich history.

“To our dismay and contrary to tradition and history, we discovered that immediately Pa Adebanjo took the mantle of leadership as acting leader of Afenifere, he has been protecting himself as the leader.

“Not only that, from all notes compared with history, he has not been working in accordance with the solemn sacred order, norms, ethics and virtues of Afenifere.

“We will not allow our future to be mortgaged by Pa Ayo Adebanjo. We challenge him to provide us with the substantial reason for attacking and maligning our son of the soil, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president-elect of Nigeria, despite the conclusion of a free, fair, and credible election devoid of monetisation or rigging, which he won.

“We condemned in totality the gross insubordination of the acting Leader of Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo.

“A vote of no confidence is hereby passed on the acting leader of Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo forthwith and he should stop parading himself as leader/acting leader of Afenifere.”

Since Adebanjo became the acting leader of Afenifere, it appeared that there has been division in the Yoruba socio-political group.
The stance of Adebanjo-led Afenifere on national issues has always been contrary to the stance of Fasoranti, the immediate leader of the group.

While Afenifere endorsed Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) for the presidential election, Fasoranti backed Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In addition, Fasoranti equally condemned the suspension of Ajayi and Omololu from the group.

Ebedi Frontliners Presents Agenda For Iseyin Development To Tinubu, Makinde, Others

…..Bemoans Eight Years Neglect of Oke-Ogun Area By Buhari Administration

….Wants FG, Oyo Govt. To Complete Ikere Gorge Dam, Reconstruct Abeokuta-Iseyin Road

A socio-cultural group, Ebedi Frontliners, Iseyin (EFI) has congratulated Nigeria’s President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Governor Seyi Makinde, Senator Fatai Buhari, Hon. Oyeshina Oyedemi (Oshine) and Hon. Dele Adeola on their victories at the last general election, urging them to prepare to key into the community’s development agenda, which they said would have positive impacts on the nation.

The group in a Press Release on Wednesday, outlined various projects, programmes and actions that they believed would have benefits for the people of the community, Oyo State and Nigeria, in the areas of food sustenance, job provision, completion of the Ikere Gorge Dam project, re-construction of federal roads around Oke-Ogun area among others.

The organization also bemoaned what it called a total neglect of the Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in his eight years in office, as no physical infrastructural project was allocated to the region that consists of ten local government areas.

The statement, which was issued after an emergency meeting of the group at the Aseyin Palace in Iseyin and made available to newsmen, indicated that EFI called on Bola Tinubu to see the completion of the abandoned Ikere Gorge Dam project as a must, so as to show gratitude to the people of Oke-Ogun region for their support towards his victory and to effect a positive change in power generation by reactivating the dam.

The group’s position in the Press Release, as signed by its President, Mr. Olusegun Adeleke indicated that the duo of Bola Tinubu and Governor Seyi Makinde’s success to achieve the agenda would be anchored upon the legislative support from the likes of Senator Fatai Buhari of the Oyo North Senatorial District, Hon. Oyeshina Oyedemi of the Federal House of Representatives, representing Iseyin, Itesiwaju, Kajola and Iwajowa and the member of the Oyo State House of Assembly representing Iseyin and Itesiwaju State Constituency, Hon, Dele Adeola.

“We congratulate the President-elect, Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu for his victory at the last Presidential election and the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, for his re-election.

“We are using this medium to also felicitate with the Senator representing Oyo North Senatorial District, Senator Fatai Buhari for his re-election, Hon. Oyeshina Oyedemi (Oshine) of Iseyin, Itesiwaju, Kajola and Iwajowa federal constituency as well as Hon, Dele Adeola of the Iseyin-Itesiwaju State Constituency for their victory and re-election, we have come with an agenda for development that will not only develop Iseyin community, but Oke-Ogun, Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.

“The agenda for development in our area is anchored upon sustainable agricultural development, security of lives and properties, provision of employment and public infrastructures like the federal roads in and around us.

“The Ikere Gorge Dam was inaugurated by the Shehu Shagari administration in 1979 to generate electricity and portable water for Oyo State and three other neighboring South-Western States, but has been abandoned since then while the multimillion naira equipments procured then have been outdated or left to rot, we believe that as part of the move by the incoming administration to increase power generation to meet the industrial and household needs of the people of the Southwest Nigeria, there is need to complete the project and as well put life into the water distribution aspect of the project to meet the yearnings of the people.

“This will also provide employment for the youths in the agro-allied industry, assist farmers with irrigation during dry season and create an all-year-round food production sustenance.

“Attached to this demand is the need for the federal government to urgently reconstruct the Abeokuta-Iseyin road that has been abandoned since the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo reconstructed it, the road has since been left to damage, with casualties from robbery attacks, kidnapping and traffic crash that have led to many deaths of road users.

“It is our belief that the bird will not fly with one wing, the efforts of the legislators to assist the executive to make bills and laws that will aid human development, this is where our legislators like Senator Fatai Buhari, Hon. Oyeshina Oyedemi and Hon. Dele Adeola from our area will have to show that they are capable.

“For each of our legislators that got re-elected to have such opportunity, it means that our people have seen and attested to your capabilities, we beseech you now to make the demand for these major projects your priority and we promise that the people of Iseyin will never forget your name when the success thereafter is discussed.

“If these are done, we believe it will be a complete departure from the neglect that Oke-Ogun area and Iseyin community suffered under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, during which no single federal road was reconstructed until the Seyi Makinde-led government intervened by taking up the reconstruction of the Oyo-Iseyin road that has been abandoned by successive governments in Nigeria.”

Governor Seyi Makinde had also promised during the pre-2023 electoral campaigns that the road leading to the Ikere Gorge Dam in Iseyin local government will be constructed while the water project at the dam will be looked into.

My Trust Has Broken Down Completely – Wole Soyinka Speaks About 2023 Elections

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has expressed disappointment about the conduct of the just concluded 2023 general election.

According to him, the nation was moving towards a situation, which he says was not planned, but one that happened fortuitously where the existing mould was going to be broken.

ODUDUWA NEWS reports that Soyinka, who said he preferred not to make comments on the electoral process because he was out of the country for a while, noted that the elections were “not exactly the most edifying exercise that we’ve been through.”

The Nobel laureate, who appeared on Monday’s edition of Channels Television’s Roadmap 2023, said even though he wasn’t in the country, he was not ignorant to what was going on.

While sharing his thoughts about the 2023 general elections and the political actors, the Nobel laureate stated that “On arriving, I came in for World Poetry Day, and immediately, I was bombarded by the most horrendous narratives both pre and after the elections.

“Since then, I’ve also read columns; I’ve seen Nigerian papers for the first time in months and I didn’t like what I read at all.

“My trust has broken down completely and even the minimum restraint that we’ve learnt to expect from seasoned politicians has been jettisoned completely.
“And the signs were there that there would be die-hard opposition to the breaking of that mould,” he said. “Elections should be keenly contested. But I still believe very much in what I call the Fashola Dictum.”

Anti-party activities: APC youths call for immediate suspension of ex-governor Gbenga Daniel

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Youth League, Ogun State Coordinate, has called on the national leadership of the party to immediately suspend a former governor of the state and senator-elect for Ogun East senatorial district, Gbenga Daniel, for working against the party in the March 18 Governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.

The APC Youth League, which equally urged the party leadership to strip Daniel of every privilege of being a member of the ruling, also demanded that the former governor should be compelled to refund the money he got from the APC to prosecute his own election.

These calls were contained in a letter entitled ‘Need to Sanction Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Senator-Elect, Ogun East Senatorial District of Ogun State’, dated March 31st and jointly signed by Fayomi Yunus and Abbas Olanrewaju Ismail, the State Coordinator and State Secretary of the League, respectively.

According to the letter addressed to the National Chairman of the APC, the former governor was found out to have vehemently worked against the interest of the APC during the elections in the state, a situation which almost scuttled chances of victory of the party at the poll.

While further calling on the APC national leadership to decide the appropriate action against Daniel as stipulated by the party constitution with regard to such anti-party tendencies, the APC Youth League with membership across the 236 wards in Ogun, said a discreet investigation revealed that the former governor had several nocturnal meetings ahead of poll with members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, with a surreptitious plans to work against the reelection of Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The investigation, according to the group, further revealed that Daniel collected several millions of naira to work for the emergence of the PDP governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, against the APC and the incumbent governor.

The statement added that “Daniel was tracked and discovered to have led the PDP machinery that
worked for Adebutu in Ogun East with attendant propaganda instruments led by his prominent aides against Governor Abiodun, without any rebuttal from the former governor.”

The League, however, expressed its dismay that the senator-elect “could go so low to have compromised
the sanctity of party loyalty and solidarity, by forming an unholy alliance with the PDP, his supposed former party to stop the reelection Governor Abiodun.”

The letter reads: “The APC Youth League, Ogun State Coordinate with its membership across all the 236
wards of the state considers it a great obligation as a matter of exigency, to address you today as a result of a certain unpalatable situation that played out in the last gubernatorial election in our dear state, Ogun State, as it affects our party and threatens its cohesiveness.

We are particularly disappointed and taken aback by the surreptitious activities of the former Governor of the State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, in the just concluded governorship election, where he vehemently worked against the interest of our party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, and almost scuttled our chances of victory.

“It was utterly strange that Otunba Gbenga Daniel, could go that low to have compromised the sanctity of party loyalty and solidarity, by forming an unholy alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party, his supposed former party to stop the reelection of Governor Dapo Abiodun.

We have it on good authority through discreet investigation how Otunba Gbenga Daniel held several nocturnal meetings with leaders of PDP and the Adebutu’s, in the build up to the governorship election, where money in hundreds of millions was given to him to work for the candidate of the PDP, Mr Ladi Adebutu, against the party that gave him a ticket to represent his senatorial district at the Red Chamber of the National Assembly.

“Otunba benga Daniel, was tracked and discovered to have led the PDP machinery that worked for Ladi Adebutu in gun East with attendant propaganda instruments led by Daniel’s prominent aides against our candidate, Prince Dapo Abiodun, without any rebuttal from Daniel himself.

“It is no more news that Otunba Gbenga Daniel, consciously collapsed the remnant of his political structure for Ladi Adebutu and worked against the APC that gave him ticket and also sponsored his election.

“It is now obvious that the original notion behind the defection of Governor Gbenga Daniel into APC in 2021 was to deceptively secure the ticket of our party having realized the PDP was no more popular in his domain and could not win any credible election, then to later serve as a mole to destroy our party to the advantage of his original party, the PDP.

“It is against this backdrop that we call on the national leadership of our great party to demand for immediate suspension of Otunba Gbenga Daniel from our party, the APC, and strip him of every privilege of membership. We also demand that the national leadership should ask Otunba Gbenga Daniel to refund
every kobo he got from the party to prosecute his election and further decide the appropriate action against him as stipulated by our constitution with regard to such anti party tendencies”.

Leaked Audio: Peter Obi Must Be Arrested For Inciting Christians Against Muslims In His Campaigns – Fani-Kayode

The former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has called on security agencies to arrest the Labour Party Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi over the religious incitation comments allegedly made in the viral leaked audio tape between him and Pastor David Oyedepo.

Fani-Kayode was quoted in a statement made available via his official Twitter handle as read in part:

“Now that the spokesman of Peter Obi, one Kenneth Okonkwo, has confirmed that the audio recording of the conversation between Bishop Oyedepo and his principal is authentic, it is time for us to call on the security agencies to declare Peter a master terrorist, a security risk, a man that is wholly unfit to lead a multi-religious, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural state and a hater of non-Christians.

“He is indeed one of the “troublers” of our nation.

“Can you imagine what would have happened to Muslims if he had won the election?

“Within a few months he would have plunged Nigeria into a religious war”.
