Akeredolu Leads Southwest Govs To Visit Asiwaju Tinubu in Lagos

Chairman of the Southwest Governors’ Forum and Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has declared that former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is doing his best as leader of the Southwest.

Governor Akeredolu, who spoke on behalf of his brother Governors during a visit to Asiwaju Tinubu’s residence at Bourdillon in Ikoyi, Lagos State, on Tuesday, said the Governors in the region believe in the leadership of the former Lagos State Governor.

Arakunrin Akeredolu, who led his colleagues to the meeting, noted that Asiwaju Tinubu is not just the leader of the Southwest but also the only national leader of the APC in the country.

He explained that they decided to pay the APC National leader a visit after the Southwest Governors’ Forum meeting which took place earlier in Lagos.

“We held the Southwest Governors’ Forum meeting. After the meeting, we deemed it fit to come over and visit our leader who has returned home successfully and who is hale and hearty.

“We have come to show our love for him and thank God on his behalf. He has been receiving visitors here. This place has turned into Mecca. We are here as part of the pilgrims.

“The National leader of APC remains one. Most of us in the Southwest believe in his leadership and it shows that he’s doing his best to lead us.

“He is not only the leader of the Southwest but also the National leader of the APC in Nigeria. But we in the Southwest first lay claim to him as our leader,” Governor Akeredolu said.

Sanwo-Olu, Akeredolu, Aisha Buhari Task Women on Active Participation in Politics

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu; his counterpart from Ondo State, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu; and Nigeria’s First Lady, Dr. (Mrs.) Aisha Buhari on Tuesday harped on the role of women in national development, saying women must be accorded their rightful recognition in the scheme of affairs.

They all spoke at the opening ceremony of the 21st Annual National Women’s Conference of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) with the theme: “Awake,” held at the Convention Centre, Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the fact that men can do virtually nothing without women, saying it was important for women to be awake and alive to their responsibilities, especially the emerging realities of the 21st century.

According to him, “There is nothing we men can do without women beside us. And so the charge before us today is to look at the changes and the emerging realities of our time. I believe the word awake is appropriate and it is meant for our women to be a lot more resilient; to be aware of the environment; to have a new approach to doing things; to ensure that you have a sustainable mindset at everything you find yourselves doing as individuals, as organizations, as corporate entities, and so on.

“I think it is important for us to know that all of you, working collaboratively as partners with the government, we can achieve a lot together working in unity.”

He said since inception, the policy direction of his administration had focused on empowering women, just as he paid a glowing tribute to the contributions of women towards actualization of the THEMES Agenda.

“In our Themes Agenda, all of the processes and the programmes we have, in one form or the other, are targeted at ensuring that we can put our women in the drivers’ seat. If you talk about health, education, infrastructure, and so on, the strongest engineers that are leading our infrastructure in Lagos are all women.

“For us as government, we have actually awakened; we have said to ourselves that we need women to take their rightful position and it is not just by mouth that they said our government is “HeForShe”, because you can see our cabinet members; they are the reasons for all of the great things that we are doing. We believe that when we have women leading the conversations, we will achieve a lot more. So, you can take it to the bank that our administration will ensure that women take the rightful leadership positions and that you are an integral part of our greater Lagos agenda,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The Governor specially appreciated COWLSO for the various humanitarian initiatives in critical sectors, especially the donation of 5000 transistor radios to support continuous learning by students during the lock down occasioned by COVID-19 pandemic, as well as various interventions in health, sexual and gender-based violence, among others.

On his part, Akeredolu, who was the special guest of honour, said history was replete with heroic acts of women, and that no reasonable society would confine women to the background, just as he said it was no longer acceptable for women’s participation in politics to be limited to singing at rallies.

“There is a need for women to start taking the issue of participating in politics seriously. Your role cannot be just jamboree – singing at political rallies. We must train the girl child in a way that she has a role to play in the future,” Akeredolu said.

Also, Nigeria’s First Lady, who was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Women Affairs and Administration, Dr. Rukayyatu Gurin, commended the initiative of COWLSO, and called on other first ladies across the country to embrace it, with the view to empowering women and girls.

In her opening remarks, COWLSO Chairman and Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu paid glowing tributes to the founding mothers of COWLSO, especially the late Dame Obafunmilayo Johnson, wife of the first Military Governor of the State, who founded the Committee in 1974, and Senator Oluremi Tinubu who initiated the National Women’s Conference in the year 2000 during the tenure of her husband, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Governor of the State, as well as her predecessors.

She said aside from the theme, other sub-topics would be thoroughly examined in the next two days, adding: “This conference will not just be a talk shop. At the end of the conference, we shall issue a Communiqué that will appropriately articulate the deliberations at this conference, and proffer insightful recommendations that will result in actionable initiatives. It is hoped that this will translate to significant improvement in the way participants address the highlighted topics, going forward.”

The event was attended by dignitaries including the Wife of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Hajia Salamutu Gbajabiamila; Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire; Governors’ Wives from Ogun, Ekiti, Kwara, Osun, Ondo, Kebbi, among others.

Special inspirational women awards were also presented to Nigeria’s first female Director of Public Prosecutions, Mrs Muheeba Wonuola Folami; first female Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State and first female Vice Chairman of Transcorp Plc, Mrs Foluke Abdul-Rasaq; the Iyalode of Lagos, Chief (Mrs.) Bintu Fatima Tinubu; and Super Falcons captain, Asisat Oshoala, who was honoured as inspirational youth of the year.

Southwest Governors Meet In Lagos, Discuss Security, Oodua Group, Others

FG To Create 21million Jobs, Lift 35million Nigerians Out Of Poverty By 2025 ― Osinbajo

The Federal government has disclosed that the new National Development Plan will create over 21 million jobs and lift 35 million Nigerians out of poverty by 2025.

Speaking on Monday in Abuja at the Nigerian Economic Summit (NES), the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osibanjo said that the new plan was part of the government response to the COVID-19 pandemic in supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to create jobs and wealth.

Osibanjo explained that the Economic Sustainability Plan also served as a bridge between the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan and the new medium-term National Development Plan.

This new Plan is nearing finalisation and was developed through an inclusive process that brought together a broad range of actors and stakeholders from across all sectors of society.

“I understand that the private sector including the Nigerian Economic Summit Group made substantial contributions and inputs into the draft Plan which is to be adopted by Government in the next few weeks and I wish to thank you for your contributions.

“The broad objectives of the new Plan are to diversify the economy, invest in critical infrastructure, build human capital and improve governance and security. The intention is to achieve broad-based and inclusive GDP growth in order to create 21 million jobs and lift 35 million people out of poverty by 2025.

This is ambitious but realizable target is consistent with the government’s vision of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in a decade.

Lagos APC Congress: No faction will be left out, appeal committee assures

Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC) Congress Appeal Committee for Lagos State, Barr Fatimah Umar, has assured all members, petitioners and stakeholders that her recommendations will reflect all factions within the party as part of efforts to reconcile various aggrieved factions within the state.

Umar at a special stakeholder meeting comprising members of the Governance Advisory Council, members of the state executive and elected officers of the party on Monday assured stakeholders, petitioners and all aggrieved members of fairness and transparency throughout the period of hearing.

Umar stated that the APC is one and should not lose its guard to allow it to be destabilized.

She assured all members of the committee’s preparedness to reflect all factions in her recommendations, noting that no faction will be shut out.

She stated: “My jurisdiction does not go beyond the state congresses.

“The issue of who to invite is not part of the mandate of my committee. If left to me, I wouldn’t know which group is which. I apologise to those that were not invited. If you feel you are not part of the privileged ones, that is why we are here. It doesn’t matter which group you belong to or what you are agitating for, we are all APC. The congresses are events that lead up to the national convention, the appeal committee has no power to subvert any opinion but to reconcile.

“The work of the appeal committee is to look into the conduct of the state congresses and make recommendations to the national caretaker committee after they might have considered our reports.

“We are going to reflect everybody in our recommendations. What we are not going to do is to shut anyone out and not heard.

“While I understand that there are certain parties that feel they are being sidelined, I want to appeal to us all to allow the process to be concluded.”

She disclosed further that the collection of petitions from aggrieved members will close on Wednesday, October 27 at 5:pm.

“I want to urge all petitioners to submit their petitions according to the scheduled time. We are progressives and I expect us to obey the rules and follow the process,” she stated.

Akeredolu Warns Against Branding Terrorism As Banditry, Says ‘No Going Back On Anti-Open Grazing Law’

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has warned that the various criminal activities of kidnapping, bombing and assault on the people in some parts of the country which are being referred to as banditry must be appropriately addressed as terrorism.

Governor Akeredolu noted that infiltration of the country’s borders and burning down of railway are activities that must be addressed as terrorism and the perpetrators treated as same.

The Governor spoke on Monday at the 27th Nigerian Economic Summit held in Abuja with the theme: “Securing Our Future: The Fierce Urgency of Now.”

Governor Akeredolu and his Kaduna state counterpart, Malian Nasiru El-rufai, and others were among the panelists at the summit which centered on addressing the security challenges in the country.

In his introductory remarks, Arakunrin Akeredolu contended that a nation with failed security and justice systems is already set to fail.

While lamenting that the dimension of insecurity in the country recently has been surprising, the Governor said he has always believed in multi-level policing as the best way of securing the nation.

“In Ondo State, we don’t have terrorism. Our problem is farmer/herder clashes and kidnap for ransom. We have drug abuse and agitation for self determination. We have always preached the multi-level policing in Ondo State. We believe in layers of security,” he said.

The Governor, who explained that although there are criminal trespasses which can be treated by the state, stressed that before the Amotekun corps was established, the Police were not always ready to make arrest.

“Yes, you have trespass. Criminal trespass on other people’s land or farm. It falls within the purview of matters that should be treated by the state. But, all we had before Amotekun was a police system that had the duty to arrest and was not prepared to make an arrest. Things are changing and have really changed in Ondo state.

“Today, if you trespass on other people’s land or farm, the Amotekun will go after you and arrest you. They pay compensations to the farmers and when they fail they are in court. It is the only way you can send signals to the people.

“When you commit a crime and the hands of law doesn’t catch up with you, another person will repeat it. I can assure you that when you do not have an effective policing system, there is little or nothing a Governor can do. And the criminal trial is taking too long,” Governor Akeredolu said.

Speaking on the recent ban on Open Grazing, Governor Akeredolu said nomadic pastoralist is a culture that must be discouraged in the interest of those involved.

He noted that the issue of grazing routes was not a welcome conversation, adding that those were issue of the past that must not be brought back to the fore.

The Governor said: ”Speaking for those of us who have put in place anti-open grazing law. We have our reasons and we have no apologies.

“Grazing routes? Grazing routes to where? It is not going to work. There are things we had in the Past. Don’t let us imagine it now. Time changes. Grazing with AK 47 is an assault. Ban on open grazing, we are doing it effective in Ondo State.

“Nomadic pastoralist is not a new thing. There were nomadic farmers all over the world. I know of people, high ranking who have ranches today. They can showcase their cows.

“Why are we pushing these people out. It is a culture that must be discouraged in the interest of those who are involved. Even with the President order that anyone with Ak47 should be arrested, how many have been arrested?

Osun APC State Congress: Appeal Committee upholds victory of Famodun-led exco

The All Progressives Congress, APC State Congress Appeal Committee for Osun has upheld the election and victory of Prince Gboyega Famodun as the authentic Chairman of the party in the State.

The five-man Appeal Panel that was constituted by the National Secretariat of the APC also affirmed the victory of other State Officers elected at the Congress which held in Osogbo on Saturday, 16 October, 2021.

Chairman of the Appeal Committee, Ambassador Obed Wadzani disclosed this while addressing a press briefing at the Osun APC Secretariat on Sunday.

He revealed that despite report of parallel State Congress held in Osun, the Panel did not receive any petition or appeal since its inauguration on October 21 by the leadership of the party at the National Secretariat, Abuja.

Wadzani explained that the decision of the Panel to affirm the results of the State Congress conducted and supervised by the Gbenga Elegbeleye-led State Congress Committee was therefore taken in the absence of any petition or appeal.

Speaking further, the Appeal Committee Chairman said the Committee came to Osun on the mandate of the national leadership of the party to look into any petition arising from the State Congress.

“We are here on the mandate of the national leadership of the party in Abuja, and this press briefing is to inform you on the purpose why we are here.

“If you recall, on the 21st of October, this Committee was inaugurated in Abuja, within the mechanism and power of the party, to see if there is any issue of appeal emanating from the State Congress that was held on the 16th of October by the State Congress Committee, led by Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye.

“We are here as the members of the Appeal Committee from the national level and I can tell you that there is no appeal or petition whatsoever since the inauguration of the Panel.

“And all the members of the Committee that was inaugurated on the 21st of October were directed to go to the State and meet with the party at the State level if there is any petition to be addressed and I am happy to report that we have been here since yesterday and we are here to address you that we have found none in the state.

“This is the only mechanism that the party leadership had provided for anyone that is aggrieved to seek redress and since there is no petition, the report will be made from what we have recorded.

“We owe it a duty to make report back to the National Secretariat of our party in line with the purpose to which we have been mandated to come. I have with me the list of the newly elected officers of the party and this will be part of the report of the Appeal Committee that will be submitted to the National Secretariat, Abuja.

“Therefore, I will like to take this opportunity to congratulate the State Chairman-elect and all his team for this wonderful work they have been doing. They have done excellently well.

“You have been doing well and there is still work ahead. This is a family affair. In APC, we know ourselves.

“My appeal to the members of the media is to continue to give wide coverage to the activities of the party as you have been doing, particularly on the good and excellent works the Governor, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola has been doing in terms of dividends of democracy to the people of Osun,” Wadzani said.

Earlier in his welcome address, the APC State Chairman-elect, Prince Gboyega Famodun, promised to put in place workable mechanism that would strengthen the unity and togetherness among members and loyalists of the party.

Famodun who expressed his readiness to embark on immediate reconciliatory process to reunite aggrieved members of the party, said no effort would be spared to collectively return Governor Adegboyega Oyetola for second term.

Asked on the moves the party will take to reach out to aggrieved members, Famodun said “the perceived aggrieved members of the party are a pressure group who wants one thing or the other but with the steps that would be taken, they will come back and we will remain one family.”

Gov Makinde, Wike, Others Attend Fayose’s Son Wedding in Lagos

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike; Governor Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Governor Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and other high profile dignitaries attended the traditional wedding ceremony of Oluwanigba Fayose, in Lagos on Saturday.

Oluwanigba Fayose, who is the son of immediate past governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, wedded his sweetheart, Olamide Adekunle Abdul at The Monarch event centre, Lekki Peninsula II, Lagos.

To the delights of many at the event, the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde announced that the political difference between him and the former Ekiti governor, Fayose was over.

“I was on Channels TV two days ago. They said I won’t come here. Am I not here? Whatever misunderstanding we had in the past, has been put behind us.”

He also noted that the presence of the Chairman Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Dr. Fayemi and erstwhile governor of Ekiti State, Segun Oni at the wedding, should serve as a lesson to Nigerians to eschew politics of bitterness and hatred.

“Here you have former Governor of Ekiti State, Segun Oni, Governor Fayose, Governor Fayemi, all of them have ruled Ekiti one time or the other. They are not in the same political party. So, those of you who want to die because of us politicians, please politics, governance is not something that should lead to anybody losing his or her life.”

Governor Makinde cautioned those bent on dividing Nigeria along religious line to take a cue from the Fayose and Adekunle Abdul families, who despite being Christians and Moslems respectively, consented to their children getting married.

“People that want to divide this country on religious line, they should have a rethink. We are here celebrating not only culture coming together, but also religious tendencies coming together.”

The Oyo State governor commended Governor Wike and the delegation from Rivers State for gracing the occasion and identifying with the families of the couple.

Governor Makinde, who prayed God to bless the couple with children, peace and prosperity, advised them to harmonise their respective dreams and aspiration in order to avoid friction and unwarranted bickering in their marriage.

“I want to congratulate Olamide and Oluwanigba. This is the beginning of a journey and our prayer is that this will produce children.”

Makinde Denies Nursing Vice Presidential Ambition, Says Rift Between Him and Fayose Resolved

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has denied that members of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum are mounting pressure on the outgoing National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus, to withdraw his case against the party from court.

Makinde also denied having presidential or vice-presidential ambition in the 2023 general elections.

This is just as he stated that members of the PDP who have failed to deploy the internal dispute resolution mechanism of the party before dragging it before courts, especially towards frustrating the forthcoming national convention, should not be allowed to benefit from the party.

The governor made these known while featuring on Politics Today, a current affairs programme on Channels Television, which our correspondent monitored from Abuja on Thursday.

Responding to a question on the likely effect of the case instituted by Secondus on the forthcoming national convention of the PDP, Makinde said, “This is a democratic party. We believe in the judiciary. By all means, he can go ahead with his case. But we have mechanisms internally for the party to resolve issues within ourselves and I still believe that that mechanism is still there.”

When asked to confirm the report that PDP governors were pressurising Secondus to stop the legal action, he said, “We cannot put pressure on him. These are adults; these are leaders in their own rights. When you are leading a state, it does not happen just like that. No. You must have gone through a process. You must have been scrutinised by people of your state before you are deemed fit to occupy the status or position of a state governor.”

On the allegation that Secondus was unfairly treated, Makinde said, “This is somebody that, at the inception of this Fourth Republic, he was the chairman of the party in Rivers State. Then, he moved from Rivers to the national (leadership). He was the National Organising Secretary of the party. He was Deputy National Chairman. He was Acting Chairman and he was the National Chairman. I would think that he has benefitted so much from the party and the least we expected from him was to really give back to the party and be a stabiliser for the party.”

The governor said if he was in Secondus’ shoes, “I would listen to the voice of reasoning.”

When asked about the disqualification of three PDP leadership aspirants especially when the party had once pardoned its members of similar offences, Makinde said, “At some points, you have to draw the line. Yes, people have been doing things in the past and they have been getting away with it. But there has to be a point where the party will have to say, ‘Enough of this!’

“You have the internal mechanism of the party to settle any issues that you may have. Besides, what exactly are we trying to do? We are trying to send a message to Nigerians: we are going towards the general elections in 2023 and we need to let Nigerians know that this is a party that will stand for discipline, unity and a party that they should look up to whenever they are thinking of how to fix the problems that we are in. And we cannot do that in an atmosphere of impunity.”

Makinde also disclosed that he had settled with a former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose over the leadership of the PDP in the South-West.

“We have put all of that behind us; that was before the PDP zonal congress. We are done with the zonal congress. It has come and gone. I am going to be at Governor Fayose’s son’s wedding on Saturday,” he said.

According to the governor, it is the first time in the history of the PDP and political parties in Nigeria where a party is about to hold an elective convention and out of the 21 positions to be contested, about 16 has been settled through consensus including the national chairmanship position.

The group charged all political parties in Nigeria to commence a process of adopting Tinubu as the sole candidate for Nigeria.

In a press statement on Wednesday in Kano by it Coordinator, Hon Bello Lawan Bello, said the “APC leader has the capacity, national appeal and technical know-how, management skills to lead and unite Nigeria based on his landmark achievement as Lagos Governor and as National leader of APC with voluminous contribution to success of the Buhari administration.
