An Ikeja S*xual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Tuesday sentenced the Medical Director of Optical Cancer Care Foundation, Dr. Olufemi Olaleye, to double life imprisonment for defiling 16-year-old wife’s niece.

Justice Rahman Oshodi held that the prosecution proved the two-count of defilement and s*xual assault by penetration against Olaleye.

Oshodi said that the evidence adduced before the court against the defendant was compelling and proved beyond reasonable doubts.

According him, the confessional statement of the defendant, which he made before his lawyer, Mr. Olalekan Buruji and the DPO of Anthony Police Station that he regretted his act, proved that he committed the offences.

The judge said that the oral statement which the defendant denied, had the NBA seal of Buruji on it and his denial did not hold waters.

“You are dangerous offender and you must be ashamed,” he said.

Alaafin Stool: Oyo Kingmakers Grilled By EFCC Over Allegation of Bribery

The EFCC invited Oyo kingmakers yesterday in response to bribery allegations, which arose from a petition by a candidate vying for the vacant Alaafin of Oyo throne.

It was gathered that the petitioner alleged that the kingmakers collected bribes running into millions of naira to favour a particular candidate, hence the decision of EFCC to summon the kingmakers for questioning.

Only Oloye Agbaakin and Oloye Samu honoured the EFCC invitation while Basorun, Lagunna and Akinniku were said to be absent.

Recall, there has been a lot of controversies and intrigues surrounding the appointment of new Alaafin of Oyo. Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde had earlier alleged the kingmakers of corruption in the selection process. He made the disclosure known publicly during the commissioning of LAUTECH Iseyin Campus that he would henceforth drag the kingmakers to EFCC if they do not desist from such act.

Tinubu Receives New EFCC Chairman Olukoyede

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday received in audience the new Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, Ola Olukoyede and the new EFCC Executive Secretary Muhammad Hammajoda at the Aso Villa, Abuja

This was after they were Olukoyede and Hammajoda confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday.

According to a statement by the EFCC, “Olukoyede identified three focal areas and raised three posers as important thrusts of plying his new job. The three focal areas are: focus on the mandate of the EFCC, pursuit of transparency and accountability and building the image of Nigeria. To achieve these, he harped on the need for collective responsibility, greater emphasis on preventive frameworks against graft and premium attention on transactional credits.”

The EFCC Chairman was quoted as saying, “We need to reset our focus. Section 6 of the EFCC Act has given us what an anti-corruption agency should be doing. Number one, I believe we should be focused on driving economic development. Number two, we must also create an atmosphere of transparency and accountability, number three, we must help as an anti-corruption agency, to build the image of Nigeria.”

Continuing, “I also came here with three posers that I like to share with us. Number one is the need for collective responsibility. We need to get to a point in Nigeria where we need to come together on the same page and believe that corruption is a cankerworm to our development. We must come together and believe that, with the way financial crimes have overwhelmed our structures and systems in Nigeria, we can’t move forward and if we move forward, it will be at a snail speed… The time has come for us to show commitment”.

Olukoyede also said that: “the time has come for us to begin to look at more of prevention than enforcement. Enforcement is a very strong tool in our hands, we are going to apply it very seriously”. He also pointed out that the anti-corruption war will bite harder with a transactional credit system, arguing that, “if we allow Nigerians to continue to buy houses and cars with cash, a thousand EFCC, added to a million ICPC will not do us any good”. The new EFCC’s boss also called for greater improvement in the criminal justice system, stressing that, “if we really want to fight corruption… we must encourage our criminal justice system to adjudicate in such a way that, maximum prosecution doesn’t take more than five years. If we make our criminal justice system work, you will see more of what the anti-corruption agencies are doing and it will be better for all of us”.

The Senate, impressed by the articulation of Olukoyede’s initiatives in driving the anti-corruption war more vibrantly, confirmed his appointment as a substantive Executive Chairman of the EFCC. It also confirmed Hammajoda as the Commission’s Secretary.
