Allow our dear Sylvester’s soul rest peacefully- Dowen College appeals to public

The management of Dowen College, Lagos has appealed to members of the public to stop spreading false information against the school over the recent death of Sylvester Oromoni, Jnr, its student that died under controversial circumstances on November 30, 2021.

In a statement released on Monday, January 10, the school authorities say the public should allow late Sylvester to rest in peace. The school authorities mentioned that they decided to remain silent since Oromoni’s passing because they wanted experts, law enforcement agencies, the government, and medical authorities, among others to do their jobs and unearth the truth about the incident.

The statement read “At this point, we respectfully request that all those who have consistently, misguidedly and maliciously pushed false information should desist immediately and allow our dear Sylvester’s soul rest peacefully in our Lord’s arms.

“The longstanding integrity, values and processes the school worked tirelessly to maintain over the past 24 years were unfairly called to question and dragged through the mud since.”

The school authorities said the result of the autopsy conducted on the deceased revealed that there was “no bodily harm, no intoxication, but rather that the young boy suffered and died of pre-existing health conditions that had not been treated.”

“Today the truth wins, our faith wins and our integrity wins. We pray that no school or organisation ever has to experience what we have been going through.” the statement added

Last week, the Lagos state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, held a press conference where he mentioned that the two autopsies carried out on late Sylvester’s body concluded he died a natural death.

The family of the deceased however disagree. They argue that the deceased just before his death mentioned the names of five students who attacked him and forcefully gave him something to drink. The family’s lawyer, Femi Falana said the first autopsy conducted on late Sylvester showed he suffered acute lung injury due to chemical intoxication

Dowen College: Falana Fumes At Lagos Govt’s Decision To Exonerate Suspects

Shortly after the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution, Adetutu Osinusi, issued a legal advice exonerating the staff and five students of Dowen College arrested over the death of an 11-year-old student of the school, Sylvester Oromoni,Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) has reacted.

Within Nigeria had earlier reported that the DPP in its legal advice sent to the police and the court trying the case of Oromoni’s death, stated that the two autopsies conducted on the body of the deceased failed to establish a case of murder and that a final autopsy report issued by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and toxicology report of post-mortem samples established the cause of death as Septicaemia, Lobar Pneumonia with Acute Pyelonephritis, Pyomyositis of the right ankle and Acute Bacteria Pneumonia due to severe Sepsis and that no harmful substance was found in late Oromoni’s body.

The state government, therefore, concluded that based on the findings, there was no prima facie case of murder, involuntary manslaughter and or malicious administering of poison with intent to harm against the suspects including Favour Benjamin (16), Micheal Kashamu (15), Edward Begue (16), Ansel Temile (14) and Kenneth Inyang (15).

Reacting to this development, Falana who is the counsel to the Oromoni family, said the legal advice had not laid to rest allegations of murder levelled against the suspects. He argued that the legal advice was hasty owing to the fact that the Chief Coroner of Lagos State ordered that an inquest be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the unnatural death of Sylvester Oromoni.

The inquest which commenced before the Coroner on December 16, 2021 has been adjourned to January 15, 2022 for further hearing, Falana noted.

His statement reads

“Our attention has been drawn to the report issued by the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions of Lagos State dated January 4, 2022 which has purportedly cleared five students and five employees of Dowen College of any complicity in the death of the 12-year old Sylvester Oromini Jr.

However, the report has not laid the allegations surrounding the gruesome murder of Sylvester Oromoni to rest. The report is escapist and hasty as the Authorities are aware of the fact that the Chief Coroner of Lagos State has ordered that an inquest be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the unnatural death of Sylvester Oromoni.

The inquest which commenced before the Coroner on December 16, 2021 has been adjourned to January 15, 2022 for further hearing.”

Ogun Bans Usage Of Phones By Students In Schools, Charges Teachers On Proper Monitoring

The Ogun state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology has announced that students are not allowed to bring phones to school anymore, calling on teachers’ to monitor them to ensure that they don’t bring phones to classes.

Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu stated this at a press briefing held at ministry conference room, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta on Tuesday.

The Commissioner explained that the advantage of phones cannot be underestimated especially in this time of serious security issues.

Prof. Arigbabu said the reasons students are advised not to bring their phones into school is because phones serve students differently but mostly to disadvantage.

He said: “On the issue of phone in school, what we ordinarily advised is that it will actually distract the students. Teachers will be teaching them and some people will be looking at phones and going to different sites to do nonsense.

“That is why it is actually not encouraged for students to bring phone to class. If they have phones, they can actually put it in their bags and at the close of the day, they can bring it out.”

He added: “But how do we know they don’t bring it out. That is why teachers need monitor them to ensure that they don’t bring phones to classes.

“Phone has its advantages and disadvantages. For instance, if a student is having problem, he/she can make a distress call. But what we are saying is that we won’t allow a student to bring phone to the class to distract you from listening to lessons.

“That is the way we want to deal with phones in school.”
