ASUU Strike: NANS Storms Ministry Of Labour In Abuja, Warns Of Mass Protest Of Nigerian Students

The National Association of Nigerian Students NANS yesterday stormed Ministry of Labour in Abuja and warned of looming mass protest should FG fails to bring an end to the recently declared strike action of ASUU.

This was contained in a statement made available to newsmen by the President, Sunday Asefon as read in part:

“We have received the news of the decision of ASUU to embark on a month warning strike with great disappointment. We have thought ASUU and FG represented by top executives would allow reason to prevail, reached compromise, act responsibly in the interest of the education sector and indeed Nigeria, to do all that is required to responsibly avert this avoidable strike.

“We are appalled by the impunity, recklessness, and irresponsibility the managers of this negotiation from both side of the table has managed the fragile situation allowing it to degenerate to the level of industrial action. We are therefore compelled to believe that negotiators from both sides acted so irresponsibly because of their apathy of the interest and welfare of the major stakeholder of the sector(students) during the negotiations.

“We are equally disappointed at the government for not doing everything possible to avert this embarrassment. We are also disappointed with the ASUU for reaching this conclusion irrespective of the implications to the students, academic calendar, research they claim to love, national security, and sanity. The Government and ASUU by this action sent a direct message to Nigerian students to also take positions comfortable for our side of the table irrespective of the implications. Let me say equivocally that we will respond in clear language, the language the oppressors understand.

“I passionately appeal to all students leaders, NANS structures, and organs across the nation to mobilize to our national non-elective congress on the 17th of February where far-reaching decisions shall be made on our collective response to this blatant lack of patriotism, human feelings, and feelings for the collective future of education in Nigeria.

“Our decisions shall be decisive, collective, and irreversible until the strike is called off. We shall fight this impunity and recklessness without any consideration other than an immediate end to this strike.

“We, therefore, inform the Minister of Labour to expect us in our numbers, and ASUU should be ready to return to the table to end this avoidable, reckless and repugnant strike. Let me assure the Minister of Labour that our protest in his office today is introductory and child play in what is yet to come. We are resolute more than before to ensure we hold government, especially the ministry of labour responsible for these incessant strike actions.

“Further negotiations should as a matter of urgency have students representative as part of the parties to allow balance in decisions that are capable of impairing the lives of students and derailing their progress. The contentions and issues are triangular and must be treated so, going forward”.

Don’t Change Our School’s Name To LAU, Leave LAUTECH For Us, Students Tell Makinde

The Students’ Union Government of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) has written an open letter to Governor Seyi Mankinde, the Executive Governor of Oyo state over proposed change of institution name, GISTSMATE Media reports.

In the open letter signed by President of the union, Comr. Adeboye Anuoluwa, he stated that the name LAUTECH has been in existing for over 30years, and changing it to LAU will do more harms than good.

Citing institution like ESUT as an example, student union argued that adding new courses to the institution should not be reason behind renaming it.

STUDENTS’ UNION GOVERNMENT
LADOKE AKINTOLA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, OGBOMOSO
Dynamism, Equity, and Integrity

AN OPEN LETTER TO GOVERNOR SEYI MAKINDE ON THE PROPOSED RENAMING OF LAUTECH

Your Excellency Sir, we Ladokites sincerely appreciate your efforts so far and plans to further develop our dear great institution in all areas. However, the changing of the name of our dear institution would do more harm than good to the image of the institution. It will cause more distractions and even sabotage most of your salient efforts in the continuous development of LAUTECH.

The name LAUTECH has been in existence for over 30years and has generated enough goodwill. Changing the name of our institution would affect this goodwill negatively. The strength already gathered by the name LAUTECH can all be forgotten if there’s a name change. Instead, Your excellency can look inwardly and see to the better recommendation of more ways in which the institution can progress further.

LAUTECH as it were, has started operating as a conventional University lately. Courses such as Marketing, Economics, Business Management has commenced earlier on. On Monday 7th February 2022, NUC visited our dear institution, LAUTECH, for the proposed Departments of English and Literacy studies, Philosophy, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Sociology, and History. They all came to study the University’s preparedness to commence the new Programmes. Hence, there is no need to hide under the so-called change to conventional University as this doesn’t have any effect on the name. A case study is ENUGU STATE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (ESUT) which is offering some of these conventional University courses yet retained her TECHNOLOGY name. Further investigations revealed that ESUT is offering Law as a course and doesn’t affect or warrant their change of name in any sense. Why then do we have to opt for a change of name?

All great institutions, including personalities, care a lot about their Legacy. LAUTECH as a citadel of learning has been through both thick and thin just to earn the Legacy. LAUTECH started from scratch (from the days of OSUTECH in which nobody was offered OSUTECH certificate rather LAUTECH certificate) through the days of constant strikes and finally, the institution has made it to the top and has become a reputable University worldwide. The Tech inclined here in LAUTECH is part of what is making the University soar high amidst her contemporaries. ? Or do we have to talk about external grants and sponsorship the University is enjoying because of the Technology part?

Your Excellency Sir, kindly reconsider the idea of renaming the institution. While we leave it untouched, let’s focus on creating future and lasting solutions to what can return us to days of old. More firms within the University should be created that can boost the IGR of the University. More Research centers should as well be created to expose and also attract external bodies in and outside the countries to the University; these and many more. Our dear institution needs to be boosted to a point such that even without enough subventions from the government, our Institution can continue to run without any delay or outcry.

Your excellency Sir, LAUTECH as an institution has produced a lot of different icons and reputable individuals in this country and overseas, hear our voice as we all collectively say we stand with the name LAUTECH and as true Ladokites we are saying that the name and Legacy of Ladoke Akintola University Of Technology (LAUTECH) be retained.

OAU Student Dies After Falling Into A Septic Tank In The Hostel

A 100-level student of the Department of Linguistics and African Studies, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun state, has died after she accidentally fell into a septic tank in her hostel on Wednesday February 9.

Heritage was said to be packing her clothes that she had washed earlier when she suddenly slipped into the septic tank in the hostel where students are allegedly asked to pay as much as N200, 000 for a bed space.

Confirming her death, the University’s Students’ Union president, Ogunperi Taofeek Olalekan, in a statement released, said

”Heritage Ajibola, the Linguistics and African Languages student who accidentally fell into the soakaway this afternoon at Bver Hostel, Maintenance Hostels, is confirmed dead!

This incident is highly unfortunate. The Union mourns her. May her soul rest in peace. May God give her family, friends and course mates the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

It must be noted that Heritage’s death was avoidable if the soakaway system was properly constructed and covered. It is saddening that this has happened despite the huge amounts of money paid by students for rent. The Management of the Hostel must answer for the death of Heritage. The Union is immediately demanding justice for Heritage, with a view to forestalling a possible reoccurrence of this.

Amandla! Ngawethu! “

One of the SUG excos told LIB that the Vice-Chancellor of the school visited the scene of the incident this evening and promised to ensure that necessary actions are taken.

The school authority is yet to release an official statement on the incident.

Meanwhile, students of the school have taken to social media to react to the unfortunate incident. They called for sanctions to be taken against the management of the hostel where the incident happened.
