ODUDUWA NEWS has just gathered that residents and traders at Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), on Monday night, were reported to have scampered to safety yesterday as hoodlums clashed together, leaving on dead while severals were injured.

It was gathered that the crisis was an offshoot of last weekend’s All Progressives Congress (APC) local council primaries in the area.

Shops were seen still under lock while some schools were closed down since yesterday. A school administrator in one of the affected schools said hoodlums had made the environment tense for students in the area.

“We have been living in fear since Saturday. Hoodlums fight every day and we cannot even run the school smoothly. We all live in fear here, even the students are not safe to be in school for a long time because anything can happen.”

While giving account of what happened, a trader in the area, who gave her name simply as Sikirat, said that about 8.00p.m. a man in his 20s was killed by hoodlums who attacked a rival group.

She said the victim was asked not to go out but sneaked out of the house before a stray bullet hit him.

“I really do not know what started the fight, but what I know is that the moment the fight broke out, everyone scampered to safety while the deceased was asked to stay indoors. We did not really know how he got out and died. Until his death, he was a decent gentle boy.”

Another trader, identified as Emeka, stated that business in the area had become unsafe for two days now due to nefarious activities of hoodlums who robbed individuals of private belongings.

On arrival at the scene, according to her, it was discovered that a petroleum tanker servicing the petrol station caught fire, which subsequently extended to the whole station.

The director further stated that the fire was caused by an electrical fault which developed while the tanker, laden with 45,000 litres of fuel, was discharging its content into an underground tank before the fire started.

Adeseye explained that efforts of the Federal Fire Service and Nigerian Police Force helped in putting out the fire.

Breaking: Nigerian Senate Abolishes HND/BSC Dichotomy, Passes Bill Into Law

The bill was sponsored by Senator Ayo Akinyelure and passed the third reading during Wednesday’s plenary session.

He added that the abolishment of the existing dichotomy between HND holders and graduates of Universities would meet the huge manpower needs of Nigerians, ensure social justice and enhanced corporate governance, as well encourage patriotic contributions amongst HND employees in both public and private sectors.

Senator Ibrahim Shekarau had earlier moved that the Senate do receive and consider the report of the Joint Committee on Establishment and Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND on the Prohibition of Discrimination between First Degrees and Higher National Diplomas Bill, 2021 (SB.297).

The motion was seconded by Senator Sadiq Umar and Senate dissolved into Committee of the Whole to consider the report.

The Senate in the Committee of the Whole and Plenary then considered and approved Clauses 1-6 of the bill.

The House of Representatives passed its own version of the bill in May 2019.

Senate President Ahmed Lawan while congratulating the House said the bill has been in the process for a long time.

“Congratulations to the Senate. This particular issue has been on the front burner for a long time. I recall that in the House between 2003 and 2007, this was one Bill that was so important and it is a way of encouraging our Polytechnic graduates.

“This should not take away the kind of training they give but should be a motivation for our Polytechnic graduates,” the Senate President said.

Amotekun Arrests Human Parts Dealer In Ibadan

Operatives of the Oyo State Security Network codenamed Amotekun have arrested a suspected human parts merchant, Mutiu Abdul-Rasheed.

Abdul-Rasheed, 40, was reportedly caught and paraded with fresh human hands and other body parts, which were paraded as exhibits.

Abdul-Rasheed reportedly said he belonged to a syndicate that sources fresh human parts for some people.

He said they exhume bodies of known people.

Commandant of Amotekun Corps in the state, Col Olayinka Olayanju (retd) told journalists that the suspect was investigated for some months before he was apprehended.

He said some unnamed individuals have been “mounting pressure on him to release the suspect.”

Abdul-Rasheed said, “We only exhume bodies that are known to us because we must know the dead person when he or she was alive.

“We must also know his or her name as well as the mother’s name.

“Knowing the mother’s name of the dead person that we want to sell the body parts attracts extra cost from those that buy the human parts from us.”

Items recovered from the suspect included guns, charms, decaying body parts, motorcycles and a car. Col Olayanju assured residents that the suspect would be handed over to the police for further investigation.

Lagos Assembly To Forward Protesters’ Petition on Insecuriy To National Assembly, FG – Obasa

The Lagos State House of Assembly has promised to transmit a petition from a coalition of civil society groups which recently organised a National Day of Mourning to the Federal Government and the National Assembly.

At a sitting on Tuesday, the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, directed that the petition be transmitted to the Federal Government and the National Assembly.

“The House as the mouthpiece of the people in Lagos State should carry the matter to the President and we should take the issues up on our own through town hall meetings.

“We will help them to forward their petition to the President and the National Assembly,” the Speaker said while commending the groups for the peaceful way they conducted themselves during the protest that took place on Friday, March 28.

Obasa, who noted that the House had earlier joined its voice to the growing call on the government at the centre to urgently find solutions to the rising tension across the country, urged the groups to continue to pay attention to the progress in Lagos State.

Earlier, a member of the House, Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, told his colleagues about the protest.

“On Friday, while we were holding a public hearing, we were pulled to some protesters who had declared a day of national mourning,” he said.

According to him, the rights activist, who were visibly not happy over the state of the nation, presented their grievances through a petition.

He said the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Wasiu Eshilokun-Sanni, tried to douse their anger and addressed them by telling them that the House shares their concerns.

Among the coalition’s requests were that the government at the centre should double its efforts to bring peace to the country and that the House of Assembly should help them call the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari to the recent tension in the country.

Constitution Review: Ondo Governor, Akeredolu Denounces Claim That He Calls For Scrapping of Senate

The governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu SANS has debunked statement credited to him that he called for the scrapping of the Nigerian Senate.

This was contained in a statement signed and released to newsmen by State Commissioner of Information, Donald Ologo as read in part:

“Re- Akeredolu Advocates Scrapping Of Senate:
Call For Part-time, Unicameral Parliament Not Same As Scrapping Senate.

It is pertinent to correct the interpretative error as regards the position of Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN in respect of the ongoing Constitution Review exercise undertaken by the National Assembly.

Of truth, Governor Akeredolu, who was represented by his deputy, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa at the session which held at the Dome in Akure today, Tuesday, June 1, 2021 canvassed strongly, for cut in the cost of governance. He had, like many other well-meaning Nigerians, consequently identified Nigeria’s Bicameral Legislature and its full-time status as plausibly reducible weights to cut cost.

Succinctly, Governor Akeredolu’s view, which is the official position of the Ondo State Government is that, adoption of the Unicameral Legislature, and making it part-time would not only cut cost of governance but has the potentials of enhanced performance and altruistic services to Nigerians.

Therefore, ascribing or misinterpreting this proposal to isolatedly, depict a call for the scraping of the Nigerian Senate is erroneous. The call for a part-time Unicameral Federal Parliament remains and shall be pursued with all vigour.
