Era of impunity is over, Akala reads riot act to Oyo APC members

Chairman of the Elders Advisory Council of the Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, has read the riot act to members of the party, saying era of impunity is over.

The former governor of the state said disrespect for party supremacy would no longer be tolerated and assured that the main opposition party in the state would be returned to the people.

He also debunked the insinuation that there is a plot to give the governorship ticket of the party to a particular aspirant, assuring that the ticket is open to all the zones in the state.

Alao-Akala made these clarifications while addressing party supporters who were at his Awosika, Bodija residence to demand for a fair and just process during the forthcoming state congress of the party scheduled to hold on Saturday.

The state congress, expectedly, would lead to the formation of new party executives that will lead the APC in its quest for victory in the 2023 general elections in Oyo State.

Alao-Akala, decried the level of impunity and disrespect for party institution in the state and said its leadership will no longer tolerate distruptive tendencies whose stock-in-trade, he said, is to put the sanctity of the party to ridicule and disrepute at the slightest opportunity.

He said no individual, no matter how highly-placed, is above the party, adding: “Anybody that calls him or herself a politician can never be a recognised politician without first belonging to a political party.

“That political party will serve as your Identity. It is on the platform of that political party that you will ply your political trade. You can never use your surname to contest and win an election.

“So why can’t we abide by the rules guiding the party? Treating that platform that gave you a political leverage with disdain and disrespect will no longer be tolerated.

“The era of members of the party going on radio, granting newspaper interviews or going on social media to tarnish the hard-earned image of the party has come to an end.

“Anybody caught in this web of Impunity will be sanctioned appropriately, as prescribed by the constitution of the party. There are rules of engagement and it will henceforth be followed to the latter.

“This coming state congress, you members of the party will decide who you want as your leads. They should know they cannot be the aspirant and at the same time be the one in charge of the party structure.

“You cannot eat your cake and have it. Anybody clamouring for the party structure is wasting his or her time. The party has returned to the people who are the members of the party. The people own the party not any leader or stakeholder.

“Without you followers, we cannot exist as the leaders you call us. This coming state congress will be an open affair and nobody’s ambition can supersede the interest of the party.

“I want to assure you that every local government will have a representative on the state executive. We have 36 positions in the state executive and we have 33 local government areas in Oyo State.

“It is a simple arithmetic, each local government area will have a slot in the spirit of fairness and equity, unlike in the past where some local governments had up to three representatives in the state exco while some had none.

“The era of some local governments being disenfranchised in the scheme of things is over. In the formation of this outgoing state executives, Oluyole Local Government Area, for example, has three representatives on the exco, while Surulere Local Government Area has nothing. where is the fairness in that?

“Same thing for Ibadan South-East, where they have the state secretary, PRO and welfare officer and Itesiwaju Local Government Area has nothing. Same thing in Ibadan North East Local Government with special leader and youth leader.

“These are the abnormalities we are out to correct in the formation of the new executives of the party and I can assure you we will achieve that. Each local government area will have, at least, a representative,” he said.

Alao-Akala said Oyo APC parades a conglomeration of the finest brains one can ever think of, adding: “Our membership is populated by an arrays of cerebral minds that are very capable of steering the ship of the party for us.

“We will not recycle old hands. Rather, we will ensure that we bring on board a new set of team to steer the ship of the party for the next four years.

“Even the party primaries coming up next year will be an open contest by the grace of God. It will be thrown open to all. Those carrying rumors of zoning the governorship ticket are wasting their time. They will be in for a great shocker.

“I have said it often times and I will repeat it again, it will be an open contest. Whoever the party chooses, we will support and we will win the election.

“It can be anybody from any zone of the state. Whoever is interested in contesting for the hovernorship ticket of the APC in Oyo State should be ready to work for it. It will not be tossed on anybody’s laps.

“That is where the practical aspect of politicking will come to play. Political theory is far different from practical politicking.

“A practical politician will always be in the field canvassing and mobilising for support, not making noise on the pages of newspapers and the social media.

“APC, as a party, is a progressive-minded institution, hence Oyo State will toe that line firmly. If the delegates at the party primaries decide to vote for a candidate from Ibarapa North as the governorship candidate of the part, so be it. That is who we will work with and ensure we win the election.”

Gov Makinde Seeks N12.35bn For Ado-Awaye Suspended Lake, Others

The Oyo State Government has sought to access N112,350,000,000 from the 1.68 percent Development of Natural Resources Fund grant for trade, tourism, and solid minerals development in the state.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, Chairman, Fiscal Efficiency and Budget Committee, Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Alhaji Shettima Yuguda made this disclosure when he led the RMAFC team on a courtesy call on Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State at Governor’s office, Ibadan, on Tuesday.

The 1.68 per cent Development of Natural Resources Fund is established to achieve resource diversification and provide an alternative source of revenue to oil not only to the federal government but the other two tiers of government and is one of the items under the Special Fund established by the Revenue Allocation (Federation Account) Act.

Speaking on the Oyo state government’s request, said the RMAFC committee was in the state for a physical visit to verify and certify the reliability of the issues in the letter of request of the state government.

Upon conclusion of its assessment, Yuguda said a report will be generated by the committee with recommendations of the commission to be sent to the President to determine the appropriate amount that Oyo state can access.

He, however, assured of fairness and equity by the committee in making sound recommendations for the state but added that this will be guided by the objective of the Development of Natural Resource Fund.

Governor Seyi Makinde, in his remarks, said the state sought to access the fund with the hope to develop the Suspended Lake in Ado-Awaye among other tourist sites across the state.

Makinde added that the state also was keen to tap its solid minerals especially lithium which he described as future gold.

He added that the state sought the fund for projects aimed at revamping, revitalising, and repositioning the state’s economy for self-sufficiency in accordance with its 20-year Oyo State Development Plan.

Ex-Oyo Guber Aspirant, Bayo Adelabu Appointed As Lagos State Congress Chairman

ODUDUWA NEWS has gathered that the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Oyo State APC Gubernatorial Candidate in the 2019 General Elections, Chief Adebayo Adelabu has been appointed as the chairman of the APC state congress committee for Lagos State.

According to the Director of Administration of The Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), Alhaji Abubakar Suleiman, the inauguration takes place at the party’s headquarter in Abuja by 1.00pm on Wednesday, 13th October 2021.

Adelabu, who came second in the 2019 election, is the leading contender for ticket of the APC in Oyo State ahead of the 2023 election.

Attempts To Foist A Crack Between Osinbajo, Tinubu Will Fail, Says Sen. Babafemi Ojudu

The Special Adviser to President Buhari on Politics, Sen. Babafemi Ojudu has kicked against attempts in some quarters to pitch Vice President Yemi Osinbajo against leader of APC Bola Tinubu against eachother.

In a statement made available to newsmen as read in part:

“My attention has been drawn to a media engagement on Channels TV this morning and a front page story of Daily Independent today.

“On the Channels TV Sunrise programme two persons supposedly representing Asiwaju Support Group and Osinbajo Support Group were pitched against each other.

“On the other hand, Daily Independent ran an headline thus:
2023 Presidency: Osinbajo On A Collision Course With Tinubu, Pushes To Succeed Buhari

“It is incumbent on me to state emphatically that neither the Vice President nor his office is aware of this or endorse this kind of a divisive engagement and news reports. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo are members of same party. Osinbajo regards Tinubu as a respected leader of a political family to which he belongs and will therefore not for any reason endorse an endeavor that seeks to pitch them against each other.

“We are not unaware of some people who may want to foist a crack among our leaders. Such an attempt is abortive. Osinbajo and Tinubu’s relationship dates way back and it shall continue to wax strong.

“Let me therefore call on individuals and media houses engaged in this act to desist from doing so. The APC remains one single, indivisible party and Osinbajo remains a loyal member of the party who respects both the party structure as well as its leadership.

“Moreover, the INEC has not given a go ahead yet for politicking towards 2023. As a law abiding citizen, Osinbajo will not commence any act in this regard until INEC blows the whistle, and in any case the VP has not indicated interest in the 2023 elections

“While appreciating individuals who are clamoring for him to contest, we however want to plead that they should not draw him or allow themselves into an unnecessary and precipitous controversy.

“We welcome our great leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu back into the country. As a great democrat himself, he will certainly welcome politics without bitterness and divisiveness. We wish him good health, long life and prosperity”.

Ajimobi’s Wife, Oke Have Hijacked APC Structure in Oyo State, Group Alleges

A group within the Oyo State All Progressives Congress (APC), the Concerned APC Stakeholders have raised an alarm over alleged hijack of the party structure by Mrs Florence Ajimobi, wife of the immediate past Governor of the State, late Abiola Ajimobi and the acting Chairman of the party, Chief Akintola Oke.

Chairman of the group, Mr Olusoji Adelana made this disclosure while addressing journalists in Ibadan on Monday.

He told journalists that Mrs Ajimobi and Oke have hijacked the structure of the party because they are claiming to have federal backing. He explained that what happened during the time of late Ajimobi where many people left the party is repeating itself.

“The three tendencies are Teslim Folarin, Mrs Ajimobi and Baba Oke and Unity Group where we have Adeseun, Deolu Akande, Soji Akanbi and others, while the Minister of Youth and Sports, Chief Sunday Dare is said to be seeking unity among the tendencies.

“For peace to reign, the unity group decided to work with the Ajimobi and Baba Oke camp, but Mrs Ajimobi has hijacked the party’s structure. A reconciliatory meeting held with Baba Oke Sunday night was deadlocked as the acting Chairman refused to shift grounds on the order of the former First Lady.

“So, the problem that occurred during the time of her husband is repeating itself. It was this that made President Buhari lose Oyo State in the Presidential election. APC also woefully lost the gubernatorial election to Seyi Makinde.

“She and Baba Oke have used their powerful relations in Kano and Abuja to outsmart other camps, and this is not good for the future of the party.

“Mrs Ajimobi said that she has zoned the positions and no one can change it. This is inimical to the progress of the party. We are saying that we should work in harmony to fight the common enemy which is PDP.

“I am using this medium to call on the national leadership of the party to call Mrs Ajimobi to order so as not to destroy the party as the husband did in his time.

“APC called a stakeholders meeting today, how many people went there? Only a few, because the structure of the party has been hijacked”.

Economic experts disagree on Osinbajo’s push for devaluation of exchange rate

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday called for an official rate that is reflective of market reality.

He said the current dual exchange rates allowed for arbitrage and blocked inflow/supply of dollars from investors.

Osinbajo said this on Monday in Abuja at the opening of a two-day Mid-Term Ministerial Performance Review Retreat organised to assess progress made towards the achievement of the nine key priorities of the Buhari regime. Experts, however, differed on the vice-president’s opinion.

This is as he said the country could not get new dollars into the system, where the exchange rate was artificially low.

The Vice President said the artificially low exchange rate was deterring investors from bringing foreign exchange into the country.

He said, “As for the exchange rate, I think we need to move our rates to be as reflective of the market as possible. This, in my own respective view, is the only way to improve supply.

“We can’t get new dollars into the system, where the exchange rate is artificially low. And everyone knows by how much our reserves can grow. I’m convinced that the demand management strategy currently being adopted by the CBN needs a rethink, and that is just my view.

“Anyway, all those are issues that when the CBN governor has time to address, he will be able to address in full.”

Osinbajo also suggested that the central bank was competing with the fiscal side of the economy, which includes the ministries, departments, and agencies of government.

He explained, “There must be synergy between the fiscal and the monetary authority. We must be able to deal with the synergy; we must handle the synergy between the monetary authority, the CBN, and the fiscal side.

“Sometimes, it appears that there is competition, especially on the fiscal side. If you look at some of the interventions, you will find that those interventions are interventions that should be managed by ministries.

“The Ministry of Industry, trade and investment should handle MSME interventions, and we should know what the CBN is doing.

“In other words, if the CBN is intervening in the MSME sector; it should be with the full cooperation and consent of the ministry of industry.

“Sometimes you will get people who are benefiting more than once because we simply have no line of sight on what is going on, on one side.”

Speaking on surviving the economic challenges of 2020, Osinbajo said that Buhari deserved the credit for providing steady leadership through the crisis.

He said, “Let me say on the whole that we have been able to weather the storm of a very, very serious economic challenge.

“I think that is based largely on the steady and stable leadership we received from the president. I think if Mr President had panicked in that period, we would have had a lot of difficulties, perhaps we would be in a much worse situation.

“He deserves the commendation for providing that steady hand when that was required.”

Osinbajo said anything was possible if Nigeria and Nigerians were willing to work together for the same objective.

However, experts who spoke to our correspondents offered different opinions.

A professor of capital market at the Nasarawa State University Keffi, Uche Uwaleke, said, the implications of devaluing the naira now were quite scary.

He said, “The first casualty will be the 2022 Appropriation Bill. It means the 2022 budget, which is predicated on N410.15 per dollar is dead on arrival.

“The Vice President obviously means well. But this statement is capable of triggering panic buying and speculation in the forex market (official and parallel) and further complicating things for the CBN.

“No doubt, devaluation will force down the volume of imports and reduce the pressure in the forex market temporarily. But have we thought of the impact it would have on pump price of fuel and the multiplier effects?

“How about the knock-on with regard to inflation and interest rates especially at a time when inflation rate remains elevated? Is high inflation rate not inimical to investments whether local or foreign?”

He said the argument that naira devaluation would incentivise foreign investors remained to be seen as other factors such as insecurity equally play a part.

The naira, he added, had suffered several devaluations in recent past.

He said, “It has neither solved the fundamental problem of helping to diversify the export base nor curbed unbridled imports. Doing so yet again will not change anything. Rather, it is a recipe for high poverty and unemployment levels.

“Again, suggesting that the CBN should discontinue its forex demand management strategy to the effect that certain items are excluded from accessing the official window has grave implications for exchange rate and the economy. If anything, it negates the import substitution drive of the present administration.

“The good news is that the CBN has sufficient external reserves to meet genuine demands for forex at the Investors and Exporters window. This much we have been told. The CBN should continue to manage it while joining hands with the fiscal authorities to create multiple sources of forex beyond oil.”

An economist and lecturer at the Lagos Business School, Dr Bongo Adi, said, “The exchange rate is a secondary indicator, driven by other economic factors. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, with all due respect, displayed a lack of understanding of the economy.

“We need to ask why the naira is overvalued. It is simply because we have not been able to improve our export profile.

“We have not been exporting much, the only thing we export is oil. Even the volume of oil production and oil export has gone down in recent times. Without an enormous export profile, you may not have currency appreciation.

“We can say our export profile is not that big, and we keep borrowing money from outside. If you keep borrowing, your exchange rate will depreciate.

“The government has taken borrowing as a way of life, and this has made the naira devalue. When they say the market should drive the exchange rate, why shouldn’t the market drive the economic production and infrastructure in Nigeria?

“There is another angle which is the consistent depreciation of African currencies, not just the naira. If you compare the African currencies from Naira to the Cedis of Ghana to all of our currencies in Anglophone West Africa and Sub-Saharan African, you will see currency depreciation that has been known since the 1980s. Countries in Africa do not have control over their exchange rate.

“If you look at how Africa supplies the rest of the world, you have to look at the international dimensions. Unfortunately, our leaders do not have the strategic intelligence to engage with the rest of the world.”

On the other hand, a senior lecturer in economics at the Pan Altantic University, Olalekan Aworinde, supported the position of the Vice President on the revaluation of the naira to attract investors.

According to him, the value of the naira against the dollar is currently overvalued, thanks to the managed system adopted by the CBN to control the rate of the domestic currency.

“The naira as it is overvalued. Enough of this managed system whereby the CBN is trying to control the rate at which the naira is exchanged for the dollar.

“The VP is saying the truth because if we devalue the naira to its actual value, then the margins that the Bureau de Change relies on will no longer be there.

He said besides boosting the confidence of investors in the stability of the country’s economy, devaluing the naira would also drive increased exports.

“The disparity between the official rate and that of the parallel market is likely going to scare away investors because investors don’t want to go to a place that is full of uncertainty.

“If investors bring in funds and they can’t determine the actual worth of the funds, because of the discrepancies in the value of the exchange rate, so they choose to invest in other countries with unified or stable rates.

“Also if the exchange rate is devalued, we are likely going to see a situation where there is an improvement in the country’s balance of payment, in the sense that when we do this, imports become cheaper while exports become expensive.

“That way, we can bridge the trade deficit, as revenue from exports will be greater than what we spend on imports.”

The Founder of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise and economist, Dr Muda Yusuf, told our correspondent that it was inappropriate to say that the VP was calling for the devaluation of the Naira.

He said the VP implied that the currency should be market-reflective.

“What we are experiencing in the forex market is largely consequences of the CBN fixed exchange rate policy regime and administrative allocation of forex.

“The NAFEX window is a subsidised window and managing a subsidy regime is typically a herculean task. Suppressing the market is like swimming against the tide.

“The way out of the forex conundrum is for the CBN to allow the market to function. It is also imperative for the apex bank to de-emphasise demand management and focus on strategies to stimulate forex inflows.”

He added that a fixed exchange rate was a major disincentive to inflows and creates enormous pressure of demand for forex.

Ekiti 2022: Segun Oni is the only PDP candidate that can defeat ruling party – Erelu

The founder and financier of Dominion mother foundation, Erelu Kemisola Josephine Elebute Halle, has urged Ekiti people and PDP delegates to yield to the popular demand of the electorates by fielding former governor Engr Adebayo Segun Oni in the forthcoming PDP governorship primary election.

She made the appeal in Abuja when Engr Segun Oni submitted his nomination and expression forms at the PDP national Secretariat, today.

Erelu stressed that Engr Segun Oni remains the best candidate acceptable to the general public and the delegates must align with the demand of the populace to render the rigging tactics of APC useless.

The Ayedun-Ekiti born philanthropist tasked the delegates to go out and feel the pulse of workers, artisans and common people in Ekiti to form their decision.

“I urge our dear delegates to go out and feel the people’s pulse to know the candidate they are expecting our great party to give them and form their decision around it, this is the only way our party can return to power in 2022” Erelu distributed umbrellas, nose masks, cooked rice and T-shirt designed with Segun Oni picture to people with no regards for nepotism and she stated that the umbrella serving as logo of our great party, shows that we’re working under the same shelter as family regardless of any of the group working for Segun Oni you belong to, in her statement while addressing the people, she expressed her undoubtedly happiness on contributions of every other group working for emergence of Segun Oni, she also urged them to continue with their tremendous working to return Engr Adebayo Segun Oni to Oke Ayoba come 2022, the statement reads.

Engr Segun Oni stormed the PDP national Secretariat to submit his forms amidst fanfare.

While speaking, the governorship aspirant said all is now set to rescue the state from its crippling stage and return it to enviable height.

He called on the party to ensure that the primary election slated for early next year is conducted freely and fairly.

The former governor was accompanied by Dominion mother foundation members, party chieftains and stalwarts from Ekiti state.

Sahara Reporters Publisher, Sowore Tackles Osinbajo, Says ‘He is Dangerous As Buhari’

Rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has described Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as an evil and dangerous man.

Sowore claimed that Osinbajo is as dangerous as President Muhammadu Buhari.

The RevolutionNow activist alleged that Osinbajo and Buhari plot the evil plaguing Nigeria together.

In a series of tweets on Monday, Sowore claimed that Buhari is deceiving Osinbajo with a succession plan.

According to Sowore, Osinbajo is informed about all actions taken by the current administration.

He wrote: “I’ve said it several times that @ProfOsinbajo is as dangerous as his principal, @MBuhari!

“They plot all the evils afflicting this country together.

“He’s in on every action of the regime. Because Muhammadu Buhari’s deceiving the Bozo that he plans to hand over power to him.

“He’s blabbing up and down. Buhari remains one of Nigeria’s most unpopular rulers ever! Buhari has no iota of credibility both as a human being or a “leader” Shame on miniman OSINBAJO.”

It recalls that Osinbajo, speaking with top officials of Nigeria’s High Commission in the United Kingdom at Abuja House on Saturday, described Buhari as the most popular politician Nigeria has had in generations.

“The President is possibly the most popular Nigerian politician that we have ever had in generations. He is possibly the only person who can go into a place or somewhere without bossing people to gather and they will come and listen to him speak.

“We need that level of credibility to be able to solve problems in our country. And I think because of his level of credibility, despite everything, he is still the only one that can call everyone, and even people who do not necessarily agree with him know that he is a man of his words,” he said.
