One person was confirmed dead while another was rescued, on Saturday, when a two-storey building collapsed on Lagos Island.
The incident occurred during the downpour.
The building under construction was located at Freeman Road, Lagos Island before the collapse was recorded in the afternoon.

The Lagos State Territorial District Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye who confirmed the incident at about 4.50pm, said responders quickly rushed to the scene for rescue operation.

Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja ll, the Ooni of Ife, has described the calls for the zoning of the presidency in the 2023 elections, as “based on emotions.”
Ooni said this on Friday in a chat with ARISE TV.
There have been calls for political parties to zone their presidential tickets to the south, in what several politicians from the region have described as a move that will be in the interest of “fairness, equity and justice.”
The debate took a new twist earlier in May when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) decided to forgo zoning and throw open its presidential ticket.
Adding his voice to the debate, the Ooni urged Nigerians to focus on competence, adding that “emotion has been our problem in this country for a long time, and that is why we are not growing”.
“The call for zoning is based on emotions. Let us cut the chase and go to the factual things. Who is going to turn around this country, irrespective of emotions and sentiments? We have built our institutions on emotions and sentiment, which is unfortunate because it will not last,” he said.
“We have big problems in this country. Who is going to solve them? Let us look at it with our analytical minds other than emotions and sentiments of zoning.
“Let’s look at competence in Nigeria. Emotion has been our problem in this country for a long time, and that is why we are not growing.”
Mr Semiu Adeyemi Adeniran has just been appointed as the substantive Statistician-General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Engineer Mufutau Open Salawu FNSE, a former All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and former Special Adviser to Late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, has joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Open Salawu, an APC aspirant for the Federal Constituencies of Ogbomoso North, Ogbomoso South, and Oriire, made this known in a statement made accessible to newsmen on Saturday.

Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the governor of Ekiti State and a presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), has stated that he is one of the few Nigerians with real-world expertise in ending wars.
The governor announced this on Thursday in Kaduna, as part of his continuous consultation to seek the support of delegates ahead of the APC presidential primary, according to a statement released yesterday in Abuja by the spokesman for Dr. Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Femi Ige.

To that aim, Fayemi offered to apply all of his experience resolving internecine battles in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Rwanda, and Sri Lanka to the fight against insurgency and banditry in the country.
Fayemi said, “I’m one of the few Nigerians with real time experience in resolving wars. I consulted for Nigeria under President Olusegun Obasanjo, I was involved in the resolution of the wars in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Rwanda and bringing the Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka to the negotiation table.
“Besides that real time experience in war resolution, I have a Doctorate Degree in War Studies. If I can bring peace to other lands, why not my own country.
“Nigeria is facing a war situation that we can’t afford to put a neophyte in power, the repercussion is too ghastly to contemplate.”
The presidential hopeful assured that he would spare no effort to ensure that the country wins the fight that must be fought with tenacity against insecurity, banditry, unemployment, poverty, inequality, threats of national disintegration, and lawlessness.
Against this background, Fayemi noted that working with other key leaders of the party, a detailed blueprint that has been developed with corresponding timelines of implementation would be employed to guide the speedy and accelerated retooling of key institutions of state, including the armed forces, the police service and the civil service.
The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has indicated that he will support whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election.
He made this known when he met APC delegates in Rivers State.
He said despite the number of aspirants vying for the All Progressives Congress presidential ticket, they must be willing to rally around and support whoever emerges candidate in the forthcoming primary elections.
This was as he said there was no need for hostility among aspirants as the ultimate goal remained the country’s unity.
According to a statement signed on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, Osinbajo spoke in Rivers in continuation of his nationwide consultations with stakeholders and delegates of the APC.
The statement was titled ‘APC has greatest potential to do the best for Nigeria, says Osinbajo in rivers.’
In his call for unity, the Vice President noted that all the aspirants that had made public, their intention to run for president under the APC, were progressives.
He said, “We are all progressives, we represent the same point of view that this country can be better; that we can improve the fortunes of our young people; that our country can be a great place. Every one of us has that desire, and every one of us can achieve that, given the chance.
“Everywhere I’ve gone, I’ve pointed out that there is no need for conflict of any kind, especially among presidential aspirants. All of us, who are presidential aspirants, have either worked together or eaten together in one place or the other. We are aspirants today, but only one person would emerge, and we must be prepared to work with that person.”
According to him, the best aspirant should be chosen to lead the party as its presidential candidate in 2023.
The Vice President also noted that the governing APC had the greatest potential to do the best for Nigeria and ensure its further development and progress.
“We are also, of course, completely at one on the idea that the party needs to be united. So, everything that needs to be done is being done and will be done to ensure the unity of the aspirants.
“Our party is, as you know, not just the ruling party, but the party that has the greatest potential to do the best for this country,” he noted .
With regards to his consultations with the delegates, Prof. Osinbajo disclosed that “What we spent our time doing today was talking more about national issues, about issues of development; and we all affirm that we have to do a lot of work; we are willing and able to do the work.”
Before his interaction with the APC delegates and stakeholders in Rivers, the Vice President had paid a courtesy to the Rivers State Traditional Council led by the King Jaja of Opobo, Dr. Dandeson Jaja, Jeki V, Natural Ruler, Amanyanabo of the Opobo Kingdom, who is also the Chairman of the Council.
Informing the monarchs of his aspiration to run for president, he said, “Our country is at a critical phase in its existence and every country faces its challenges. Our country is facing some of the biggest challenges it has ever faced.
“This current administration has faced more security challenges than any other administration. But I am confident that, not only will we be able to tackle the challenges today, we will be able to tackle the challenges of the future.”
In his remarks, King Jaja of Opobo thanked the Vice President for his “good wishes” and for sending a representative to his 80th birthday celebration saying “That was very kind of you. Let us campaign in peace and let us not add to the challenges that we are going through already.”
Sokoto State governor and presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Aminu Tambuwal, has blamed former President, Goodluck Jonathan, for not allowing the amendment of the country’s constitution for restructuring before he left office.

According to him, Jonathan should have allowed the proper reform of the electoral system.
Tambuwal said this on Thursday in Akure, the Ondo state capital, while canvassing votes from the delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ahead of its presidential primary.
Tambuwal, who was a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, noted that the various challenges currently crippling the country would have been averted if Nigeria had been restructured.
He said, “I understand the debate about restructuring, the fiscal federalism, and the devolution of power. I know all of these issues and understand them very well.
“As Speaker of the House of Representatives, we attempted but unfortunately former President Goodluck Jonathan did not sign that constitutional amendment that could have possibly address some of these challenges being raised in terms of restructuring, devolution of power among others.”
He added that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, had no road map for the progress of the country since its inception.
Despite the management’s direction that students return next week, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso chapter, has stated that professors at the state-owned university will not engage in any academic activity.
Dr. Biodun Olaniran, the ASUU chairman for the LAUTECH chapter, responded on behalf of the union in a statement released earlier today.
He said that university lecturers were participating in ASUU’s statewide strike and that they would not forsake the cause unless the union’s national body terminated the strike.
Parents and students should be aware, according to the union, that academic activities would not resume even if students returned as directed by university.
The ASUU chairman said, “Our union is in receipt of the memo from the university registrar calling for the resumption of academic activities for the first semester of the 2021/2022 Academic Session on Thursday, May 26, 2022.

“The Academic Staff Union of Universities, LAUTECH branch, wishes to dissociate itself from the said memo. The branch wishes to make it abundantly clear that ASUU-LAUTECH is part of the ongoing nationwide struggle of the union to reposition our public universities. LAUTECH has not, and cannot, back out of this patriotic struggle.
“As you are aware, the LAUTECH branch of ASUU is involved in the ongoing, twelve weeks roll-over strike action by our union called to draw the attention of the Federal Government to implement the Memorandum of Action signed with ASUU in 2020. The MoA encapsulates all that needed to be done to make our public universities (Federal or State) internationally competitive.
“The decision to embark on this action was duly communicated to the university administration and it has not been vacated. As clearly stated by our union, the ongoing strike action embarked upon by ASUU is not targeted at any vice-chancellor, university administration, students, or any group within or outside the system.
“Once again, it must be emphasised that the strike action has not been reviewed in any way. It must also be stated that the administration pays attention to the subsisting demands of the branch to ensure a conducive industrial atmosphere in LAUTECH even after the suspension of the nationwide strike.
“We, therefore, urge the parents, guardians, students, and general public to note that our members are not in a position to conduct any academic activities while this ongoing action lasts.”
