The Lagos State Government has announced the suspension of the implementation of the new policy guidelines on the provision of safe abortions for residents of the state.

It would be recalled that in June, the government, through the Ministry of Health, had unveiled the “State Guidelines on Safe Termination of Pregnancy for Legal Indications”.

Mixed reactions, however, trailed the move as prominent bodies such as the Catholic Church called on the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to stop the implementation of the abortion guidelines.

In a statement on Thursday, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi said the governor directed that the new guidelines should be suspended until adequate deliberations are made.

Sanwo-Olu said the suspension would allow for adequate public sensitisation and stakeholder engagement to reach a consensus required for a successful guideline development.

The statement reads in part, “These guidelines have generated immense public interest which has necessitated escalating it to Mr Governor, who has advised further sensitization of the public and key stakeholders to ensure a clearer understanding of the objectives of the guidelines.

“To this end, we are suspending the implementation of these guidelines in the meantime for the Executive Council to deliberate on this matter and ensure adequate public sensitization and stakeholder engagement to reach a consensus required for a successful guideline development.

“The Lagos State Ministry of Health remains committed to planning , devising and implementing policies that promote qualitative, affordable, and equitable healthcare services to the citizenry.”

Kuje Jailbreak: Buhari govt must sack Chief of Army Staff, others – Fani-Kayode

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has called for the sack of the Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt. Gen. Farouk Yahaya and all the military high command over the spade of insecurity in the country.

Fani-Kayode made the call while urging President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to do more to protect Nigerians.

He was reacting to reports that the Department of State Services, DSS, warned the military about the attacks on Kaduna train and Kuje prison by terrorists, but nothing was done.

In a series of tweets, the All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain wondered if the Nigerian Military High Command was incompetent or weak.

According to Fani-Kayode: “A situation whereby the DSS not only WARNED the military about the Kaduna train attack & kidnapping but ALSO the Kuje prison break well BEFORE they both took place & the military REFUSED to act to prevent or resist either of them gives cause for alarm & raises many questions.

“The DSS, NIA & NPF are doing their job & they have lost so many men in the course of this conflict.

“Our young soldiers & junior officers who are fighting in the killing fields are doing their best too but why are our SENIOR OFFICERS & MILITARY COMMANDERS so INCOMPETENT & WEAK? Is there not more to this than meets the eye?

“It is increasingly difficult to comprehend the glaring incompetence & lack of patriotism, professionalism, diligence & courage of the leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“Is this the same military that once proudly led ECOMOG to victory in the West African sub-region?

“Is this the same military that once gave the Chadians & Libyans a bloody nose?

“Is this the same military that once faced down the Cameronians & French in the Bakassi Peninsukrs?

“Is this the same military that once kept us safe & protected us from enemies within & without?

“Is this the same military that was once led by Murtala Mohammed, Benjamin Adekunle, Olusegun Obasanjo, T.Y. Danjuma, Sani Abacha and Ibrahim Babangida.

“Is this the same military that was once regarded as the most powerful & effective fighting force in sub-saharan Africa?

“Is this the same military that politicians and our people once spoke of with respect & in whispered tones. How are the mighty fallen!

“Who will defend us from these foreign barbarians and invaders now?

“Who will stand against the terrorists that have plagued our land & that slaughter our people like sallah rams & Xmas turkeys? This is no longer about party politics. This is now about saving the lives of our people who are being butchered & terrorised in a most horrendous way.

“The entire military high command & the COAS have to go & the FG has to do far more to protect our people. We owe them that much. To criticise our own where we have gone wrong, though rare & unfashionable, is an act of patriotism & not one of rebellion. Nigeria must come FIRST!”

Ondo State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, has raised the alarm that terrorists are moving southward to take refuge in the forest.

He reiterated the need for the creation of state police to ensure security of lives and property.

Akeredolu pointed out that the Nigeria Police Force is overstretched, understaffed and lacks the capacity to adequately secure the people.

The governor spoke in his office on Thursday, while hosting the new Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 17, Yunnus Akeera.

He said, “We do not run away from the fact that the police force is overstretched. The same thing, we do not run away from the fact that a single police command in Abuja will not be adequate to police the large populace of the country. This has led to our demand for state police.

“We can complement each other. I have had senior police officers who agree on state police. Maybe they can’t say it in public. Go to Ekiti and even here in Ondo State, most of the police stations have no vehicle. Look at the unfortunate incident that happened in Owo, police said they had no vehicle to pursue the perpetrators.

“Let us all sit down and agree that we should have a system that will create division of labour. We can have the federal police and then, the state police. You can face a major task like intelligence gathering and pass it to the state police to work on.

“What is happening, if not for lack of intelligence people will not go to Kuje and attack the place in Abuja. We need your cooperation too in this our cry for a dual police system that we can work together. People are moving down south to take refuge in our forest. You don’t have the men and officers to secure the country. Police is understaffed. We appreciate your limitations in terms of men, ammunition and so on.

Earlier in his remarks, the new AIG, Yunnus Akeera, who was accompanied to the governor’s office by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Oyediran Oyeyemi, said he would carry on with the good work the governor has done on security and deepen it.

Impeachment: Oyo PDP Knocks Makinde’s Deputy Over Refusal To Respond To Allegations Levelled Against Him

The ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo state has berated the deputy governor, Rauf Olaniyan over his refusal to clear his name of allegations of financial impropriety, abandonment of office among others, levelled against him by the state legislature but resorted to approaching the court to restrain the lawmakers from performing its constitutional functions saying such action violates every atom of the Yoruba ‘omoluabi’ ethos.

The party however, praised the state House of Assembly over its directive to the state Chief Judge, Justice Munta Abimbola to constitute a 7-man panel to investigate the allegations levelled against the deputy governor, Rauf Olaniyan describing it as the right move in the right direction.

The party said the move by the Ogundoyin Adebo led legislature indicates that the legislative arm has risen in defense of democracy and performing its statutory legislative duty as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

According to a press statement by the ruling party in Oyo state which was made available to newsmen by the PDP state Publicity Secretary, Akeem Olatunji on Thursday July 7, the deputy governor, Olaniyan should understand that “he who must go to equity must go with clean hands.”

The party maintained that as an educated individual who rose through the ranks until retirement while in the state civil service, Olaniyan should know better that the House of Assembly is constitutionally empowered and duty bound in the interest of the general public to investigate any public office holder, institution, or government parastatal when the need arises.

Disappointed by Olaniyan’s refusal to respond to the allegations levelled against him by the legislature in a petition forwarded to him and instead approached the court for a restraining order, the ruling party described the act as clear show of disrespect for the legislative arm of government which the party said was nothing short of abuse of office.

The party stressed that what the House of Assembly has done was to protect the deputy governor’s right of fair hearing as provided for in the nation’s constitution. The party added that Olaniyan’s response the weighty allegations levelled against him would have unravelled more revelation that would help all concerned parties arrive at an informed and fair conclusion.

The Oyo state PDP stated further that “no single individual should on account of the office they hold in trust for the general public feel or think they are above the law”, saying “a man without skeletons in his cupboard should not be afraid to open his cupboard.”

The Oyo state PDP also said, “as a sitting deputy governor who should always be seen showing example of leadership to now be the one displaying sheer executive arrogance, rascality, and brazen disrespect for the legislative arm constitutionally saddled with the powers and responsibility of carrying out oversight functions, was unhealthy for the nation’s democracy.

The party however, maintained that no amount of delay tactics deployed by Olaniyan in what was described as “a desperate move to buy more time” can prevent the state lawmakers from carrying out their statutory legislative duties or avert the course of justice urging the deputy governor to stop insulting the sensibility of the good people of the state by trying to whip up mischievous religious sentiments to garner public sympathy.

Meanwhile, the ruling party in Oyo state has also welcomed and commended defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) into the PDP, particularly, Honourable Simeon Oyeleke representing Ogo-oluwa/Surulere state constituency at the Oyo state House of Assembly and thousands of his supporters noting that both new entrants and old party members all have equal rights and access to opportunities within the ruling party.

Expressing confidence in a victorious outcome of the forthcoming 2023 general election, the PDP stated that APC has depleted to the point it should henceforth cease to be addressed as the main opposition party in the state stressing that every serious politician who is abreast with obvious reality as grassroots mobilizers know that there is no vacancy in Agodi Government House adding that 2023 has now gone beyond PDP or Seyi Makinde stressing that it is now a political project being championed by the people themselves across every household having seen the light after eight years of darkness and modern slavery between 2011 and 2019.

Waterfield Luxury Hotel Akobo, Ibadan

The Lagos State Government on Monday says it has fired a customary court judge, Mr Ishola Razaki Adeyemi, who allegedly dissolved a marriage between a couple and impregnated the wife of the complainant, Olayemi Ayeni.

Ayeni in a now-viral video was seen recounting his tumultuous ordeal in the hands of Adeyemi, whom he claimed made his life a living hell.

According to him, he had a major dispute with his wife and mother of his kids, Doyin Rukayat Okunnubi, in whose business he had invested N5 million.

The romance became sour when her business flourished and his wife allegedly became rebellious.

The man further accused his wife of infidelity which prompted him to sue to seek a resolution to the crisis.

He said the judge who presided over the marital fracas engineered their divorce and subsequently impregnated his wife.

“I had an issue with my wife, she moved out of the house, she rented an apartment very close to my house. I put five million naira into her business to establish a school, Greatest Kiddies Foundation. So, the success of the business caused a problem in the family, I could not control her again,” he had said in the video.

“So after 10 months, I took her to court, thinking that I’d able to resolve this matter through Alternative Dispute Resolution. The judge, Dr Ishola Azakiq Adeyeni, hurriedly dissolved my marriage and got that woman impregnated three months after the dissolution of the marriage.

“The woman, she’s now carrying nine months pregnancy for that man. What really pained me is that in the ruling, this man denied me access to my children. That I can only see the children at the school premises once a week. The same children now are under his custody; he took over the business I established for that woman. He denied me access from having access to my children, he impregnated the woman now and he still wants to send me to jail.”

Reacting in a statement issued on Monday, the Lagos State Government said the case was investigated by the State Judicial Service Commission.

According to the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Titilola Vivour Adeniyi, the findings of the investigation subsequently led to the termination of the appointment of the judge.

She added that the incident happened between 2014 and 2015.

“The attention of the State Government has been drawn to a viral video circulating the social media space wherein one Mr. Olayemi Ayeni (the Complainant) alleged that a former Customary Court Member, Mr. Ishola Razaki Adeyemi, abused his office by exhibiting unprofessional conduct in a customary court case involving the Complainant and his wife and proceeded to snatch his wife and children from him.

“The matter which occurred between 2014/2015 was investigated by the Lagos State Judicial Service Commission. The findings of the investigation subsequently led to the termination of the appointment of the Member of the Customary Court.

“It was discovered that the viral video was posted by ‘Ogbonge friends’ sometime in 2016.

“Members of the public are informed that the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has attempted to reach out to Ogbongefriends on their various social media accounts, but unfortunately their accounts have not been active since 2018. All efforts to reach out to the complainant have been to no avail.

“We, therefore, use this medium to encourage anyone with useful information about the complainant to please reach out via our social media handles- @dsvrt on Twitter or @dsva on Instagram or on 0813-796-0048,” the statement read.
