Oyetola v Adeleke: Why we can’t react to Osun tribunal verdict – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has noted its reason for staying silent on the ruling of the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Osogbo, which nullified Ademola Adeleke’s victory in the governorship elections held on July 16, 2022.

What INEC said: Addressing questions from news men, on Monday, January 30, 2023, Barr. Festus Okoye, national commissioner and chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, said the court process must be allowed to take its full course.

“The governorship election tribunal is the court of first instance in election petition proceedings. The aggrieved party in this instance has signalled a wish to appeal against the ruling. It will be harmful to prejudge the outcome of the appeal.”

About Adeleke v Oyetola: Adegboyega Oyetola, a candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), had challenged Adeleke, a candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), claiming that the latter had won due to overvoting and certificate fraud.

The tribunal acknowledged that APC’s claim of overvoting was incomplete. Still, it found evidence of overvoting in the guber election held on July 16.

The tribunal concluded that “after deducting invalid votes due to overvoting, Adegboyega Oyetola scored 314, 931 while Governor Ademola Adeleke scored 290, 666.”

What you should know: This issue has created doubts on the newly adopted BVAS.

Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) is an electronic device designed to read Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and authenticate voters at every polling unit either through facial recognition or fingerprint capture.

By this, it means under normal circumstances, anybody who is not verified by BVAS should not be able to vote.

Two Feared Dead As Truck Collides With Tricycles In Lagos

Two persons have died in an accident involving a loaded truck and three tricycles popularly known as ‘Keke’ in the Ikotun area of Lagos State, on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said it also rescued four victims; two pregnant women and two children, who were trapped inside the tricycles.

The survivors have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

New Naira Swap: CBN Gov, Emefiele Bows To Pressure, Appears Before Reps

The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele has arrived at the National Assembly complex ahead of the hearing on cash withdrawal policy by the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, members of the Ad-hoc Committee investigating the new cash withdrawal limit and cash swap policy were also in an executive session on the directive of the Chairman, Hon. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa.

The Clerk of the House of Representatives, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria conveyed the message to the members of the Ad-hoc Committee at 11:53am.

The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele had earlier held a meeting with the Speaker, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila and Hon. Ado-Doguwa on arrival at the National Assembly complex.

In confirmation of News Direct earlier report, the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele arrived at the venue of the investigative hearing at 11:59am, in company of the management team of the apex bank.

Sacrilege! Oyo PMS Leader’s Son, Kesari Allegedly Rapes Woman Inside Mosque

ODUDUWA NEWS has gathered how a son to one of the leaders of Oyo State Park Management System identified as Idris Kesari raped a woman in Islamic purdah called Niqqab.

It was learnt that the woman was raped inside a Mosque in Ibadan.

According to the source, the culprit was also alleged two months ago to have raped a lady before the recent one.

He has since been arrested by Oyo State Police Command and currently in the custody to allow further investigation on the matter.

Meanwhile, some Muslims led by an Islamic cleric, Alh. Amubieya have been condemning the incident as they trooped out today in Ibadan to express their grievances while seeking justice for the victim.

A source said, “the thug who raped a Niqobite (Muslim lady in veil) has been identified as Idris, also known as Kesari.

“He is the son of a union leader known as Al-Majiri. He was arrested by the police and the case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID)”.

Tinubu, Ganduje Behind Attack On Buhari’s Convoy In Kano – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the strongest terms condemns the attack on President Muhammadu Buhari today in Kano State by miscreants allegedly sponsored by the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

This organized attack on the person of the President is outrightly treasonable and a sacrilegious assault on our national sovereignty which must be condemned by all.

Our Party is alarmed that this attack is part of APC Presidential Candidate’s alleged plot to undermine the Presidency, cause confusion, trigger violence in the country, disrupt the conduct of the 2023 general elections and derail our democracy; having realized that he cannot win in a peaceful, free and fair electoral process.

The PDP invites Nigerians to note how Governor Abdullahi Ganduje attempted to abridge President Buhari’s movement and even tried to stop him from visiting Kano State.

More disquieting is the fact that the APC Presidential Campaign sought to humiliate and harm President Buhari, while performing his official duties in Kano.

It should be noted that the APC Presidential Candidate has been displaying open aversion and making inciting statements against President Buhari since Mr. President’s declaration, in line with democratic best practice all over the world, that Nigerians should freely vote for any candidate and Party of their choice in the 2023 general elections.

The apparent frustration of Asiwaju Tinubu to resort to encourage or condone violence is fueled by his entitlement mentality, that it is his turn to be President, despite his numerous ineligibility and disability baggage.

Nigerians are reminded about Asiwaju Tinubu’s infamous statement in London where he declared to his supporters that “political power is not going to be served in a restaurant, it is not served a la carte. It is what we are doing; It is being determined; you do it at all cost; fight for it, grab it, snatch it and run with it”.

Only recently, Asiwaju Tinubu further incited his followers against President Buhari at APC’s Presidential Rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where he accused Mr. President of attempting to subvert the electoral process.

It is now clearer why the APC Presidential Candidate brazenly established a militia code-named “the Jagaban Army” which is designed to undermine our national security, unleash violence on institutions of democracy and disrupt the electoral process.

The PDP counsels the APC Presidential Candidate to come to terms with the fact that Nigerians are determined to have free, fair and credible elections and that they are unwavering in their choice of the PDP Presidential Candidate Atiku Abubakar as the next President of our country.

Asiwaju Tinubu should note that no threat by any means can divert Nigerians from the path to rescue and rebuild our nation; which aspiration is embodied in Atiku Abubakar.

Osun: It will be hard to upturn tribunal’s judgement, Falana tells Adeleke’s lawyers

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has stated that it will be a daunting task for the lawyers of the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke to overturn the verdict of the Osun State Governorship Election Tribunal.

Recall that the tribunal sacked Adeleke for overvoting at over 700 polling units in the governorship election and declared the former governor, Adegboyega Oyetola as the winner of the July 16, 2022, gubernatorial election.

Falana while speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Sunday, urged voters in Osun State to sue the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for damages over the wastage of votes.

He said, “What the voters in those areas have to do is to sue INEC for damages that you have wasted my votes.

“Looking at the judgement, I believe very strongly that it is going to be a daunting task to impeach the judgement. INEC has to be held completely responsible for what happened.

“INEC will have to go back to the drawing table so that we will not have this experience. INEC will have to put its house in order, If we have this in a presidential election, where you issue one or two reports, it will have a crisis of monumental proportion.”

Fayemi sues Arise TV, ex-Ekiti commissioner for alleged defamation, demands N500m as damages

A former governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, has filed a lawsuit against a former commissioner for information in the state, Mr. Kayode Otitoju, and Arise Television for alleged defamation.

In a suit with No HAD/10/2023 filed at the Ekiti State High Court on January 25, the former governor claimed that Otitoju defamed his character by intentionally airing offensive broadcasts against him.

Fayemi is demanding N250 million from the ex-commissioner and another N250 million from Arise TV in the lawsuit for alleged defamatory remarks made by the former when he featured as an analyst on the television station on November 22, 2022.

According to the lawsuit’s Writ of Summons, which was made public on Sunday, Fayemi is requesting that the defamatory statements made about him by Otitoju during Arise TV’s program Newsday be taken back.

The former governor is also demanding a formal public apology to be published in at least three reputable national newspapers and made available online and on social media.

Otitoju had during the show accused the former governor of “holding a midnight sitting at the Ekiti State House of Assembly to get the former Speaker, Gboyega Aribisogan, impeached.

Town Hall: We Will Consolidate On Our Gains If Re-Elected For 2nd Term – Makinde

Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde has promised to consolidate on the gains made so far in his administration if reelected again as the governor of the State.

Makinde made the statement today in an ongoing town hall meeting at the Fresh FM Ibadan observed by ODUDUWA NEWS Correspondent.

Makinde said he has been following data and logic in actualizing some of the achievements of his administration as against hasty decisions. He referred back to his logical stance during the COVID-19 era where Federal Government and some states embarked on lock down which later plunged the economy to a depression.

He used the medium to highlight some of his achievements which included making LAUTECH a solely owned institution by Oyo State, the conversion of Emmanuel Alayande College of Education to a University, recruitment of teachers in secondary schools among others.

He also talked about some challenges facing the pensioners and promised to address them as soon as possible. He gave the response while replying questions raised by representatives of the Oyo State Pensioners

Two feared dead as container falls on a bus in Lagos

At least two persons were killed on Sunday, January 29, when a container fell on a bus at Ojuelegba bridge, Lagos State.

It was gathered that the affected bus was fully loaded with passengers and at least two persons were confirmed dead on the spot.

According to reports, an eyewitness disclosed that the trailer wanted to block the bus from overtaking him when the unfortunate incident happened.

Breaking: CBN extends deadline for old-new naira swap to Feb 10

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has extended the deadline for the use of the old notes till February 10.

CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, announced the extension in a statement on Sunday, January 29, 2023.

“Based on the foregoing, we have sought and obtained Mr President’s approval for the following: a 10-day extension of the deadline from January 31, 2023, to February 10, 2023; to allow for collection of more old notes legitimately held by Nigerians and achieve more success in cash swap in our rural communities after which all old notes outside the CBN loses their Legal Tender Status.

Our CBN staff currently on mass mobilization and monitoring together with officials of the EFCC and ICPC will work together to achieve these objectives.

A 7-day grace period, beginning on February 10 to February 17, 2023, in compliance with Sections 20(3) and 22 of the CBN Act, allowing Nigerians to deposit their old notes at the CBN after the February deadline when the old currency would have lost its Legal Tender status,” he said.
