Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has said state governors, rather than President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, should be held responsible for accounting for the financial gains arising from the removal of the petrol subsidy.

Abiodun made the statement on Thursday during a campaign rally organised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

The governor said the removal of the petrol subsidy had resulted in increased allocations to state governments, making governors better positioned to explain how the additional funds had been utilised.

According to him, the increase in revenue accruing to the states has provided governments with greater resources to execute infrastructure and other development projects.

Abiodun maintained that the federal government under President Tinubu should not be solely called upon to account for the gains from subsidy removal, stressing that the funds have also been distributed to state governments through increased allocations.

He said governors should therefore be prepared to demonstrate to citizens how the additional resources received since the subsidy removal have translated into tangible development across their respective states.

The governor used the occasion to highlight infrastructure projects and other interventions undertaken by his administration in Ogun State, presenting them as part of the benefits being derived from increased government revenues.

His comments came amid continuing public debate over the economic impact of the petrol subsidy removal, which has contributed to higher petrol prices and increased living costs, while government officials have repeatedly argued that the savings and increased revenues are being redirected towards development and social interventions.

Abiodun urged the people of Ogun State to continue supporting the APC, saying the party remains committed to implementing policies and projects aimed at improving the welfare of residents and accelerating development across the state.
