Lagos, Ogun, Oyo Top List As Nigeria Records Highest COVID-19 Cases In Six Months

As states struggle to curb the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant, Nigeria is now averaging more than 700 new cases, says the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The NCDC, which disclosed this on Thursday morning, added that the country registered 790 additional infections on Wednesday, increasing the 610 cases it registered a day earlier.

The surge resulted in the federal government calling on Nigerians to take responsibility and adhere to preventive measures.

The NCDC noted that states were struggling to curb the spread of the Delta variant. Due to the spread, NCDC observed that Lagos set a new record for COVID-19 on Wednesday with 574 cases, and infections in Rivers jumped to 83, Ondo (38), Ogun (31), Oyo (23), Delta (10), the FCT (9), Ekiti (7), Edo (6), Osun (4).

One new death was also recorded on Wednesday, bringing the nation’s fatality count, since the pandemic started, to 2,195.

The NCDC added that 74 people recovered and were discharged from various isolation centres on Wednesday, with total recoveries nationwide since the onset of the pandemic clocking 166,203.

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY: IBADAN PRIME YOUTHS FORUM ENCOURAGE YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN AGRICULTURE

In marking this year International Youth Day, Ibadan Prime Youths Forum wishes to send our Goodwill message to the Youths throughout the country, especially during this era when youths transformation and employment are needed for National development.

It’s important we state, that this year’s theme announced by the United Nations fit into our current reality as a people “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health” at IPYF, we can’t but agree, that for development in our localities, the involvement of the youth innovation is essential.

We will recall, that according to a 2020 report of the National Bureau of Statistics, unemployment rate was recorded for youths between 15 – 24 years was 40.8% while ages 25 – 34 years stand at 30.7%.

The NBS also reports Nigeria’s youth population eligible to work is about 40 million out of which only 14.7 million are fully employed. With the above statistics, we cannot but agree that youth all round development is the only way out.

With the foregoing, we wish to state that youth empowerment in agriculture which is in line with this year’s United Nations theme on Food Systems is one of the feasible ways to reduce our Youth unemployment rate, we believe this is possible by introducing technology in both our farming and food processing methods.

Lastly, while we recognize the efforts of Government both at the local level and federal, we want to admonish government to do more in bringing more youths into Agriculture through innovations that will enhance their participation for National Development.

How Benin Republic Stopped Plane Buhari Govt Sent To Extradite Sunday Igboho – Falana

Human right lawyer, Femi Falana has revealed how Benin Republic rejected President Muhammadu Buhari’s bid to have Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo popularly called Sunday Igboho put on a waiting plane and extradited to Nigeria after his arrest in the French-speaking country in July.

Falana stated that Benin Republic rejected the offer and insisted that due process must be followed if the freedom fighter is to be extradited to Nigeria.

The Senior Advocate stated this during an interview on BBC Yoruba on Tuesday.

AFRICAN REPORTERS recalls that Igboho and his wife, Ropo, were arrested at the Cardinal Bernardin International Airport, Cotonou on July 19 while trying to catch a flight to Germany.

The 63-year-old legal luminary noted that Benin Republic, however, informed the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to understand that obeying the law is sacrosanct to them.

Falana said; “The Nigerian government asked the Benin Republic government to repatriate Sunday Igboho. In fact, we heard they had even sent an aircraft to be used to bring him down to Abuja.

“The Benin government made its Nigerian counterpart to understand that this is not a lawless society.”

The Yoruba nation agitator fled Nigeria to the Benin Republic after he was declared wanted by the Department of State Services, DSS.

The DSS operatives invaded Igboho’s residence in Ibadan following intelligence reports he was stockpiling arms.
