Oyo State Government has declared that all public schools in the State are to resume for the second term 2021/2022 academic session on Monday, January 10, 2022.

The Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran made the announcement during a New-Year Prayer session with staff members of the Board on Tuesday.

While wishing students and teachers a happy resumption, Dr. Adeniran appealed to Head-teachers and all stakeholders to ensure strict compliance with all COVID-19 safety protocols put in place by the state.

Meanwhile, the OYOSUBEB Chairman has vowed that the welfare of staff members of the Board will remain top priority of the management of the Board this year.

Dr. Adeniran noted the Governor Seyi Makinde led administration believes workers deserve their pay on regular basis, adding that this has informed the Board’s decision to approve disbursement of loan forms to staff members of the Board.

According to him, the loan will be disbursed to beneficiaries, depending on their grade level.

Yoruba Group Faults Igboho’s Lawyer, Olajengbesi’s Resignation, Says He Acted Unprofessionally

Yoruba group, Ilana Omo Oodua (IOO) has faulted Pelumi Olajengbesi, a lawyer to Sunday Adeyemo, a.k.a Igboho, for announcing his resignation on social media.

Olajengbesi defended Igboho’s aides and relations against the Department of State Services (DSS) at an Abuja High Court.

In a statement on Sunday, the activist told the public he was done with matters involving Igboho and the Yoruba Nation agitators.

The legal practitioner said his firm was satisfied with its representation of the citizens which ensured the protection and enforcement of their rights.

Olajengbesi noted that thirteen persons arrested by the DSS were released, while only two persons face terrorism trials at the Federal High Court.

“While thanking everyone, particularly Chief Yomi Aliyu (SAN) for the opportunity, and freehand service, Dr. Olasupo Ojo for his fair leadership and Chief Femi Falana for allowing his industry to be tapped and for the moral support, I most respectfully wish to now step aside”, he wrote.

Reacting, IOO spokesman, Maxwell Adeleye in a statement made available to ODUDUWA NEWS, said the lawyer’s resignation on the internet “is an indication of lack of understanding of the ethics of his profession”.

He said Olajengbesi resigned over the body’s response to “his provocative and unnecessary attack” against the leader, Professor Banji Akintoye in December.

Olajengbesi defended Igboho’s aides and relations against the Department of State Services (DSS) at an Abuja High Court.

IOO said Olajengbesi announced he was quitting cases concerning Igboho and the Yoruba Nation struggle but will continue with the case of the Ighoho charged for terrorism.

“You can’t approbate and re-approbate. You can’t be out attacking us on social media and still want to handle the Ighoho case. You can’t eat your cake and have it.

“The public embarrassment, humiliation and opprobrium that has been brought to the Yoruba Nation self-determination struggle by Olajengbesi in the last 24 hours is enough.” Adeleye noted that if allowed to continue, “Olajengbesi will sabotage us and trade the two innocent people to the Nigerian Government.

“We do not want him anywhere near our struggle anymore. He has clearly indicated that he lacks honour, integrity and decency.”

The statement reiterated condemnation of Olajengbesi’s New Year’s day message to President Muhammad Buhari “without authorisation, impersonating and painting the image of a tired Igboho”.

OPINION: The Controversial Altercation Of Customary Laws And The Coronation Of The 42nd Olubadan

…In response to Lawyer Lana’s letter to Governor Makinde

In Yorubaland, installation of successive Obas has always generated furore. This may not be unconnected with the influence, power and respect that are attached to the status. Ideally, at the demise of an Oba, it is a norm that a successor would be coronated. Meanwhile, installation of a successor is dependent on the extant customary law. Although, every prince is a potential Oba but the King-makers; who expectedly are not partisan, have a great role to play. Their recommendation is essential to government’s ratification.

Boisterously, the process of installation of a successor in Ibadanland is the most rancour-free. The pattern is designed in such a way that allows a progressional and sequential promotion from the angle of depression to an angle of elevation. The Olubadan-in-council is an hierarchical order or organogram that allows seniority. Thus, the most- senior Chief automatically steps into the shoe of the departed Oba without much ado.

Ibadan sons and daughters need no soothsayer to tell them who wears the crown. The tenth Oba is already known. It is needless to begin to explain the two royal lineage to the post. It is inconsequential to the subject of the matter.

Consequent upon the demise of the 41st Olubadan on Sunday 2nd of January, 2022, the home of Dr. Senator Lekan Balogun at Alarere area of Iwo road became a mecca of some sort while his family compound at Ali Iwo around Gate went into wild jubilation which coincided with festive period. His private home became the cynosure of all eyes and the whole place went ecstatic. Reason: he is the heir apparent to the stool. The Otun-Olubadan is not unknown to the public. He is an erudite scholar, writer, Administrator and a personality of high pedigree.

Barely 24 hours to the demise of Oba Akanmu Adetunji, a letter emanated from the desk of Barrister Lana. It was addressed to the Executive Governor of Oyo state. Momentarily, the jubilant mood of the people at Ali- Iwo was punctured. Barrister Lana is not just a lawyer. He is not a “charge and bail” solicitor. Rather, he is legal luminary who’s words are authority. He was once a commissioner of Justice in Oyo state. Thus, he is privy to customary ordinances that establish Ibadan Obaship.

Expectedly, there have been mixed reactions to the letter. Actually, the letter is a reminiscence of the litigation filed by the Seriki group prior to the installation of late Oba Odugade. The letter was given publicity by ever-reliable Oduduwa Online news; and yours sincerely have perused the letter with all objectivity. In fairness to the respected legal luminary, the body language of the letter is not ambiguous and devoid of sinister motive. Rather, it should be seen as an inquest and advice.

Quoting copiously from the letter; “.. in the history of Ibadanland, we have never had such a structure where the legality or otherwise of the installation of the Olubadan would be an issue and this is what your predecessor did not take into consideration before an illegal journey”.

The ” illegal journey ” being referred to is a veil reference to the controversial elevation of some high chiefs to the position of obas in Ibadan. This was to the was extent that the obas were empowered to wear crowns with the title; “His Royal Highness”. The arrangement also conferred the title of “His Imperial Majesty” on Olubadan. This issue pitched the elevated high chiefs against Olubadan and Olubadan against the then governor of the state, Senator Ajimobi. Ironically, the duo are no more. Their actions have become a subject of discussion and ridicule.

Having carefully perused the letter, there was nothing to suggest that the lawyer was acting any script. The letter was borne out of sincerity. The onerous task lies with the current government to approach the court before any coronation. Since the case is pending in court of competent jurisdiction; honestly, it would be unreasonable to hurriedly hold the installation. Rather, government should hasten the court adjudication.

The erudite lawyer did make two suggestions to ward off the Imbroglio. It is either the high chiefs withdraw the case they instituted or court’s pronouncement on whether the elevated chiefs are entitled to wear the beaded crowns and still be installed as Obas. Succinctly, can an existing Oba be crowned as Oba again !

The conclusive part of the letter was comical. It reads; ” The ball, your Excellency, is in their(high chiefs) court.

Meanwhile, rising from a two-hour closed-door meeting held on Monday 3rd of January at the house of the would-be successor to the throne, Senator Lekan Balogun, the Olubadan-in-Council posited that the age-long Olubadan Succession plan remains sacrosanct. The high chiefs maintained that the elevation conferred on all of them is inconsequential to the installation of new Oba and that promotion would not preclude any of them to mount the throne whenever it is their turn. This is an apparent response to Lawyer Lana’s letter.

On a finality, it would be suicidal, prejudicial, parochial and impatient to castigate the erudite lawyer. You have got to painstakingly read the letter before you crucify him because the learned person was not against any personality but the system.

Olubadan-In-Council Visits Lekan Balogun, Says Age-Long Succession Plan Remains Sacrosanct

Following the demise of the 41st Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, members of the Olubadan-in-Council have condoled with the Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, people of Ibadanland and family members of the late monarch.

Rising from a two-hour closed-door meeting held at the Alarere residence of Otun Olubadan and the would-be successor to the throne, Senator Lekan Balogun, the Olubadan-in-Council described the deceased leader of the council as an indefatigable ruler whose reign would be difficult to forget.

While praying for the repose of the soul of the departed king, the council urged the bereaved family of the deceased to remain joyous and happy for the legacies of good reign left behind by their patriarch.

The council reiterated that the historical and traditional succession plan to the throne of Olubadan remains sacrosanct, the elevation conferred on all the members of the Olubadan-in-Council as Royal Majesties notwithstanding.

Members of the council were elevated to the Royal Majesties status by the previous administration in the state led by the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi and it became contentious and litigious.

Olubadan-in-Council said the elevation granted the members, who also serve as kingmakers had not in any way altered the age-long and enviable traditional succession plan to the Olubadan throne in Ibadanland.

According to the Council, “there should be no any controversy as to who becomes the next Olubadan amongst us as the previous elevation that made us Royal Majesties did not in any way affect our respective offices in the Olubadan-in-Council and would not preclude any of us to mount the Olubadan throne whenever it is the person’s turn.

“We are the kingmakers and we will do the needful at the appropriate time. For now, we are still all in the mourning mood of our departed father and revered leader in the Council and we just want to assure the generality of our people both home and in the diaspora that there’s no cause for alarm”, the Council added.

Magodo Estate Not Locked Down, Overzealous Security Guards Were Only Arrested, Lagos CP Claims

The Lagos State Police Command has debunked rumour flying around that Brooks Estate in Magodo was locked down. This was contained in a statement released by the Public Relations Officer of Command, Adekunle Ajisebutu as read in part:

“Attention of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn to news making the rounds on social media, alleging that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, locked down the Brooks Estate, Magodo, Isheri during his visit to the Estate yesterday.

“The purveyors of this news are those whose intention is to make a mountain out of a molehill, and are out to blackmail the Commissioner of Police for some personal reasons.

“This rejoinder is not intended to join issues with the mischief makers peddling the news, but to unclad the truth in the interest of members of the public who might be tempted to believe the story.

“CP Hakeem Odumosu who was recently promoted to the enviable rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police due to his hard work and commitment to duty, visited the public Estate yesterday,1st January, 2022 to meet a strategic partner at a function after going round, visiting some places in the state to ensure safety of Lagosians.

“The Commissioner of Police was accompanied by his armed security details and was driven in his official car bearing an official number plate and a pennant, including all the paraphernalia of office.

“On reaching the Estate gate, he was properly introduced notwithstanding the visible security details in uniform including an outrider in his convoy, yet he was prevented from entering the Estate by some overzealous private security guards.

“All appeals to the security men to allow the CP go to see someone at a function where an urgent matter bordering on security was to be discussed, fell on deaf ears even when they had foreknowledge of his coming.

“In spite of this deliberate humiliation, the senior police officer remained calm. When it became obvious that the security men were going overboard, the CP after about 30 minutes humiliation, ordered the arrest of four of the security men, leaving one. However, in order not to make the Estate porous, the Commissioner of Police immediately posted well-armed policemen at the gate to support the security man left behind.

“A few minutes later, a female resident of the Estate later identified as Adebola Fatiregun who didn’t witness the incident but heard of it, stormed the gate in anger, inciting other residents against the Commissioner of Police and his aides. She was also arrested for inciting violence and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

“All those arrested were taken to the Isheri Police Division where they made statements. They were subsequently released few minutes after, following intervention of notable individuals.

‘At no time did the Commissioner of Police shut or lock down the Estate. The police boss could not have done that for whatever reason, knowing that the Estate is a residential one.

“Some residents of the Estate in solidarity for the arrested security men, deliberately closed the gate, thereby creating a temporary gridlock. This they did after the CP had left, perhaps to blackmail him and make him release the security men.

“It should be stated here that, the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria provides for freedom of movement. The police in particular are statutorily permitted to enter any public place at any time. The Brooks Estate is a public place and the roads leading into it are highways and as such, no one has the power to prevent police officers in uniform from entering the Estate or any such public places.

The internal security arrangements of the estates and other public places nonetheless, the statutory powers of the police to have unfettered access to public places must be acknowledged and respected.

Therefore, managements or authorities of estates in the state are advised to constantly brief their private security guards in this regard. Any restriction deliberately put in the way of the police in any of the estates will not be tolerated. Offenders will be dealt with according to the law, just as the police will not condone any form of embarrassment and recklessness”.

‘Nothing showed murder’, Police reveal details of Sylvester’s autopsy report

The Lagos state police have revealed the findings in the autopsy report conducted on Sylvester Omoroni Jnr, the deceased student of Dowen College in Lagos.

The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu, noted the autopsy report did not show that the 12-year-old student was murdered.

Odumosu however noted that investigation is still ongoing while a toxicology test is still expected to be conducted on the corpse.

He said; ”We are not at the peak yet. But we have done our investigation and have sent the report to the Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP for legal advise on those arrested and DPP has replied.

“We have gone through the medical aspect which is the post mortem.

Post mortem was carried out in Delta and Lagos states. The first one done in Delta State was only witnessed by the parents of the deceased.

“But after I held a meeting with the parties concerned, at the instance and directive of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and my Inspector- General of Police, IGP Alkali Usman Baba, the second post mortem was carried out in Lagos.

The corpse was brought from Delta State to Lagos, where the Post mortem was carried out with all the parties involved, that is parents of the deceased, parents of the students accused, the school authority and government. These were the four parties that witnessed the post mortem. And the result is out.

“The report of the Post Mortem did not bring out the issue of murder on anybody.

“Besides the result of the autopsy, the court order that we got has elapsed and we have released the house master and others on bail because there was nothing that indicted them of murd.er.

“It is only a mur.der case that is not bailable. Every other offence is bailable. They have been in custody for more than twenty days and that is infringing on their fundamental human rights. Since medical and legal reports have not indicted them so far, I think there is need to allow them have their freedom because bail is not the end of the case.
