No Money Rituals, Yahoo Yahoo In Our Time, Says Osun Ex-Governor, Aregbesola

Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has advised youths to shun crimes and other self-defeating activities like advance fee fraud, ritual killings and drug use.

The former Osun State Governor urged young Nigerians to take advantage of their time in school to seek knowledge that will equip them to be the best in chosen fields.

He spoke at a programme part of the 60th anniversary of Akoko Anglican Grammar School, Arigidi Akoko (AKOGRAMS) in Ondo State.

Aregbesola said the influence of the school contributed to his achievements as a professional and politician.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said schools, in the past decades, focused on structured development and grooming.

“There were social nights every Saturday involving decent entertainment activities such as debates, lectures, drama, film shows and dancing”.

“We had teachers who attended to the students and took them as their own children, caring but dealing strictly to instill moral values and academic knowledge.

“The principal at my time was a politician, an ex-parliamentarian who would always regale us with local and international news and current affairs at each morning assembly.

“He was an inspiration and a tool of God in my political evolution. AKOGRAMS moulded and formed me,” Aregbesola stated.

The Minister also attributed his successes as a Governor and Minister to prayers, self-belief, total trust in God Almighty and focus on programmes aimed at transforming lives.

APC primary: Tinubu, other aspirants can’t outspend me, says Orji Kalu

A presidential aspirant, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has said that the former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, and other aspirants cannot outspend him during the upcoming All Progressives Congress presidential primary election.

He said this during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, adding that Tinubu isn’t a hindrance to his becoming next president.

Asked if he sees the former governor as a threat, Kalu answered, “No! and I am not a threat to his ambition. By the time we meet in Eagles Square, this issue will be settled.

“Mind you, politics is not only about money; it is about the people you are going to govern -the people of the North-West, the people of North-East, the people of North-Central, the people of the South-East, the people of the South-West, and the people of South-South, and we have the people. I can move the people and the people are with me.”

On why he decided to run fr president after an initial denial, Kalu said the situation of the country made him make a U-turn.

Apart from boasting that he has support from all regions in the country, Kalu also said as a “recognised billionaire”, there’s nothing others can spend that he can’t spend.

He said, “It was circumstance from the South-East, South-West, North-West, North-Central, and North-East that made me decide to join the race. I was governor with him (Tinubu), there is nothing difficult in challenging anybody.

“We are all going to meet at the Eagle Square, and we will square it out there. There is no difficulty. I am the only political businessman that is first recognised as a billionaire, and I am not sure that there is anything those people can do, in terms of money, that I cannot do. I don’t think they can speak to anybody in Nigeria or in the world that I cannot speak to.”

The Governor commended the old students of AKOGRAMS who organised the Diamond Jubilee celebration for pulling together their hard earned resources to embark on several projects in the school which include blocks of classrooms, school gate project and planting of 100 trees within the school compound.

Ex-governor Oni Dumps PDP for APGA, Picks Governorship Ticket

Former governor of Ekiti State and one of the governorship aspirants in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Segun Oni, has dumped the party for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Oni who lost out in the recently conducted PDP Governorship Primary election to the winner, Bisi Kolawole, was said to have reached out to APGA for an opportunity to contest the governorship election using their platform.

THISDAY gathered that after some exploratory meetings between Oni’s associates and the leadership of APGA, a deal was struck to admit the ex-governor into the party’s fold and subsequently grant him a waiver to enable him to fly the flag of APGA.

APGA’s Vice Chairman (South West), Samson Seun Olalere led Oni’s associates to a meeting with the national leadership of APGA on Tuesday.

The meeting which was held behind closed doors had the national chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Ike Oye and National Secretary of the party and former Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku in attendance.

THISDAY gathered from a source privy to discussions at the meeting that the team came to APGA at the instance of the ex-governor who has concluded arrangements to dump the PDP for APGA.

According to the source, “Oni has already registered with APGA and purchased its nomination form, having secured firm assurances that he will be substituted as the party’s flag-bearer for the Ekiti State Governorship election.”

As part of the plan to unveil his new platform, the source said that Oni is mobilising supporters who will accompany him on a long road march from Ikare Ekiti to the state capital, Ado Ekiti.

The road march which is meant to showcase the strength of his support base will have the supporters drumming, dancing and waving the APGA flag all throughout the march.

I Will Defeat Tinubu As APC Candidate If PDP Fields Me – Fayose

A former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has described as hearsay or loose talk the claim that he has pledged to support the presidential ambition of the National leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Instead, Fayose, who said he might consider joining the 2023 presidential race, boasted that should the People Democratic Party pick him as presidential candidate and Tinubu gets the APC ticket, he would trounce the former Lagos governor at the polls.
Fayose added that Nigerians would be doomed if they fail to replace the APC with the PDP in Aso Rock come 2023.

The ex-governor spoke in an exclusive interview with Saturday PUNCH.
Responding to a question on his alleged pledge to back Tinubu’s presidential ambition, Fayose said, “I have said it over and over, Asiwaju remains a Yoruba leader; I remain a Yoruba leader. We are in different levels of leadership. But if I am being misquoted for the fact that I said Asiwaju is a Yoruba leader, I am saying I am a Yoruba leader, but Asiwaju in his own Yoruba leadership is in the APC; Ayo Fayose in his own leadership is in PDP.

“Who has told you that I don’t want to be President? Who has told you that if the PDP picks me that I will not defeat Asiwaju? Who has told you? You don’t know maybe I will still contest. If I come out and they zone it to the South-West and they say it’s Fayose, if they pick Asiwaju, I will defeat him!”
Further rubbishing the claim that he had pledged his support for Tinubu’s ambition, Fayose wondered what he stood to gain from Tinubu’s presidency as a member of the opposition party.

He added, “I have never seen the quote. It is impossible. How do I claim to be the husband of a woman in another man’s house? It is all heresies. Loose talks! Listen, PDP government is far better than the APC government in Nigeria. Would he (Tinubu) leave the APC people and come to give me appointments or will he make me vice president, such that I work for the APC? It is not possible. Tinubu is for the APC, I am for the PDP. All these insinuations are just to call the dog a bad name so as to hang it.”
On his claim that the PDP is Nigeria’s brightest choice in 2023, Fayose said, “If the PDP does not win the 2023 election, then Nigerians are doomed. From what I have seen since 2015, Nigerians are doomed. The kind of leadership that Nigeria has witnessed – insecurity, the economy.

“Don’t forget that the impact of these things is more felt by the masses. It is the people that are at the receiving end. The cost of diesel today is about N400 per litre; during President Goodluck Jonathan’s (PDP) time, it was N140, N145. Whatever we are saying, it is either Nigerians want to remain in perpetual poverty or they save themselves. It is about Nigerians themselves.

Mapoly Student: We Only Asked If She Had Prescription For Pregnancy Strip, Postpill -Ogun Police

The Ogun State Police Command has denied arresting a student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Olanipekun Oladayo Irenimofe, on Friday for buying a pregnancy test kit and contraceptive.

Rather, the Police Public Relations Officer, DS, Abimbola Oyeyemi said the police were doing their duties by questioning her whether she had a doctor’s prescription or not.

When our correspondent reached out to him on the matter, he said “The command has released her since morning. She was questioned if she has a doctor’s prescription.”

A Twitter user, Olukoya Oluwatosin on Friday raised an alarm over the arrest of her sister for buying a pregnancy test kit and emergency contraceptive pill.

She said, “My sister, a student of Mapoly just got arrested for going to buy postpill and pregnancy strip. She’s at a police post in Abeokuta.”

In subsequent tweets, she revealed that her sister had been released, but that policemen went searching for her again.

Olukoya later tweeted that police went to arrest the pharmacist who sold the products to her sister.

“Please help oooo, she just told me they’ve gone to arrest the pharmacist that sold them to her.”

Osun 2022: PDP Can’t Match What We’re Doing, Says Oyetola

Gboyega Oyetola, the governor of Osun State, has stated that the Peoples Democratic Party has no possibility of matching the APC’s achievements in the state over the last three years.

He said that his administration’s visible infrastructure and people-centered programs had won him a good rating among the people at the grassroots.

Oyetola told news correspondents late on Thursday in Abuja that he had submitted his nomination and expression of interest forms to the APC national secretariat.

Despite the effects of COVID-19 and the state’s limited finances, he claims, his government has maintained voter trust.

He said, “Well, I can talk about my party, the APC; it remains the party to beat anytime, any day. I don’t see them having any extraordinary chance of doing what we are doing.

“The infrastructure that we have done is there for everyone to see. We have also received so many ratings from the people who are to decide in terms of what we have been able to do.”

Lekbad Column: 2023 Presidential Election And The Southwest Subtle March Towards Sole Candidacy

Comrade Lekan Badmus is a columnist with Oduduwa News and a public opinion analyst.

Tentatively, INEC has fixed February as the date for the next general elections. Characteristics of Nigeria’s political culture, the voting pattern has always tilted towards two parties from 1960 till date. Although, the most pronounced was the era of SDP and NRC. Infact, the current system is a replica of that era. APC and PDP are the only recognized parties. As informed as yours sincerely is, I can’t mention more than ten parties currently on the radar of INEC. They are as numerous as sand. Alawada parties so to say !

“Amodun ko jinna” for any party to begin preparation for elections. In a sane nation, the best way for any party to remain relevant is to provide quality opposition and assume the status of a pressure group. Opposition party has a lot to do with regards to the principle of checks and balances.
Unfortunately, opposition in Nigeria is suffering from intellectual laziness.

The best way to play opposition is to think beyond the box. Be abreast over the ruling party, engage in rigorous researches, organize seminars to awaken the consciousness of the electorates on the maladministration of the ruling party, provide palliatives where necessary. However, all these though seem germane, they must be genuine.

Opposition transcends campaign of calumny, gutter politics and damaging remarks. It is wrong to raise fictitious alarm, divisive comments and incitement. Once the educated public realized the sinister motive, such opposition becomes a nuisance and whatever that emanated from their secretariat would be considered as the ranting of an ant.

In the history of Nigerian politics, the best opposition we ever had was the moribund UPN under the leadership of the late sage, Awolowo. The former minister of finance was an examplar of a good opposition. Awolowo upheld the principle of constructive criticism. He would criticise and offer solution. He was full of superior and convincing argument.

Presidential election has always been the most interesting in Nigeria. However, the political arena seems too cold and inactive. One expects serious politicking from the parties; taking cognisance of the February date.

National polity is a product of regional consensus. Charity begins at home. Ordinarily, any party or candidate that desires national respect needs to control his background. The background is the basis just like Cell which is the single unit of life. Home is essential.

From the body languages of the two domineering parties, southwest may be marching towards sole presidential candidacy.

How do I mean !

From the preparation witnessed so far, the only serious candidate for presidency has been Tinubu. He is the only candidate that has shown a superfluous energy towards the position and has transversed the four-cardinal points of the nation. Other rumoured candidates are still snoring from a deep sleep. The idiomatic expression of ” make hay while the sun shines” does not make any sense to them. As my father would say; if you failed to prepare, you must be prepared to fail.

Within the ruling party which claimed to parade array of stars, few politicians have shown interest on paper. From the vice president to the outgoing governor of Ekiti state and to Aregbesola, former governor of Osun state.

From PDP, despite the clamour for power shift, nobody has ever indicated intention from southwest thereby giving credence to my apprehension on the likelihood of a sole candidacy.

Sole candidacy is different from consensus candidate. Consensus candidate is an agreement within the party while sole candidacy is a case where all contending parties unanimously adopted an aspirant irrespective of his political inclination.

Due to his political sagacity and dexterity, Tinubu seems to have gotten over the local threats to his ambition. Antagonism to Asiwaju’s ambition was more visible and strong from his home background. Apparently, he is loved in the north. Ile l’Adie ko ti n’iyi. His political allies cuts cross northern hemisphere and southern region. It was reported recently that one of his allies who is of southern extraction donated two private jets to Tinubu’s campaign team and one again offered him his five – storey building as campaign office. Ironically, Asiwaju was hitherto confronting opposition from three groups of people at home. These are Afenifere, Bode George, PDP and Tinubu’s boys within APC.

Prior to the death of Yinka Odumakin, the spokesman of Yoruba social-cultural group, there was a strong vehemence against Tinubu’s candidacy by Afenifere who has always criticised and openly expressed their disdain. Tinubu was seen as a betrayal and an egoist. Only God knows how he did it, Tinubu seems to have win their hearts. Little or no dissident voice is roaring from within Afenifere again. One thing is cock sure, Jagaban enjoyed an unalloyed royal support. The traditional leaders may have prevailed on Afenifere to sheathe their swords and bury stomache their vendetta. ” Won ti jebure”! After all, ‘ Omo eni ko se idi bebere, Kaa f’ileke si idi elomi.

Aside Afenifere, one lone ranger opposition is chief Bode George. One man battalion. Chief George hated Tinubu with passion. Fierce, fluent and undaunted, Bode George has always threatened to go into self – exile if Tinubu won presidency. His grouse was that Tinubu orchestrated his incarceration. Despite his incessant vitriolic attacks, Tinubu never responded. This is s good virtue from Asiwaju and a lesson to all. Only God knows how Tinubu was able to control his adrenal gland which stimulates emotion and anger. Meanwhile, Chief George has subtly ceased to call Tinubu names. “Baba ti fi owo wo’nu”.

One great virtue of Tinubu is his ability to discover, nurture and offer intellectual people the opportunity to serve. He is a political Boys’ Scout. I stand to be corrected that all political juggernauts of Yoruba extraction who are making waves at the federal level are Tinubu’s boys. He is their benefolent. They all rode on his back to stardom. Osibajo, Fasola, Lai, Aregbesola, Sunday Dare, Gbajabiamila, Bamidele, Ojudu and a host of Senators and members of house of representatives.Asiwaju is not just a cosmetics accomplisher.

Hitherto, there was a crack within the family. Fayose, Aregbesola and Akeredolu were reported to had wanted to look straight into Tinubu’s eyes. Specifically, it was rumoured that Fayemi was planning to throw his cap into the ring against Tinubu. All these have since frozen.

PPD is the only visible party in south west. This is a party in control of Oyo state where Engineer Seyi Makinde is the governor. Alas, the governor is not interested in becoming the president. The coast seems to be cleared for Tinubu as a sole candidate from Southwest. With one united voice, it would be practically impossible for anyone to defeat uncle Ahmed.

This is about the second time we might be witnessing sole candidacy in Nigeria. The first was the political parties tutored by late despotic leader, Sanni Abacha. The dark-goggle head of state had nurtured five political parties which the late Cicero of Esa -Oke derogatorily labelled as “five leprosy fingers”. All the five parties that sprang up then had adopted Abacha as their sole candidate.

Sole candidacy is a situation where all parties adopted a particular candidate in an election. The system is a guarantee to victory in any election because such election is without opposition. Atimes, other parties may present paper candidate to provide nominal opposition.

Sole Candidacy somewhat looks like option A4.

It has its merits but also a risk to other parties because the inability to present candidate in an election may could lead to political suffocation and a premature extinction of other parties. Fielding a candidate in an election is a way to sustain relevance.

Let me conclude by quoting Dr. Tunji Abayomi, a renowned legal practitioner and activist.

“…I think we need to focus on the values in a man that may transform our depressing, uncertain present and future who seeks to be President instead of hitting the past with a disturbing hammer.

A holy man may just not be a great President in a clearly poluted world. Let us reflect deeply.” The submission of Dr. Abayomi aptly describes the maxim that; ” t”eni-n- teni.”
