Nigerians Can No Longer Bear This Economic Hardship – Gani Adams Slams Tinubu Over Poor Policies

Iba Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, has called out the President Bola Tinubu administration’s insensitivity to Nigerians’ economic challenges. He expressed deep concerns over the growing hardship the citizens are facing under the current government.

In an open letter titled ‘President Bola Tinubu, time is going’, Gani Adams said, “We have no regret that we were created to inhabit this geographical space in the West African axis of the African continent.

“Obviously, past leaders, since 1960, disappointed Nigerians with the way ‘Nigeria and Nigerians were badly led and resources selfishly managed’.”

Adams then criticized President Tinubu’s campaign promises, saying, “When you came with the ‘Emilokan’ coinage, many Nigerians were persuaded that you will perform better than Muhammadu Buhari.”

Reflecting on the harsh economic conditions, Adams highlighted the skyrocketing fuel prices: “On May 29, 2023, when you became the Commander-in-Chief, the price of a litre of fuel was less than N200. Today, it is more than N1000.”

He questioned the reform efforts of Tinubu’s administration, particularly in the economy: “What type of reform is this? In May 2023, the Naira to a Dollar was less than N740. Today, it is more than N1,600.”

Adams further decried the increase in insecurity across the country, noting, “…from the North to the South, East to the West, the rate at which Nigerians are being abducted… it was as if these bloodthirsty maniacs have just been unleashed on Nigerians from the hottest part of hell.”

Concluding his letter, Adams urged the president to reconsider his policies: “Mr President, don’t you think the wicked and draconian increase in fuel price is a huge recipe for crisis?” He insisted, “Nigerians can no longer bear this economic hardship any longer.”

Fuel Price Hike: Ogun Govt Approves 2-Day Off for Workers To Ease Economic Hardship

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has approved two days off duty per week for officers on Grade Level 01-14, while officers on Grade Level 15-17 are to maintain one day off duty per week.

A statement by the State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya said the gesture is aimed at further easing the burden on the teeming workers who now face more significant challenges commuting to work.

According to the Head of Service, the gesture is expected to translate to substantial relief while also enhancing service delivery through a more motivated and energized workforce.

He described Governor Abiodun as highly committed to the welfare of workers.

He urged all accounting officers to immediately implement the policy in their respective MDAs by working out modalities to ensure that the day off system is scheduled in such a way that service delivery is not compromised.

According to Onasanya, Governor Abiodun had, in July 2023, introduced the one day off work policy for all grade levels, adding that the current extension to two days off work for GL 01-14 is to further reduce the financial burden on workers and increase productivity.

Gov. Abiodun Meets NLC, Says Ogun Won’t Be Second In Implementing N70,000 New Minimum Wage

Ogun State workers will soon smile as the state Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has stated that his administration is working towards implementing the new minimum wage.

The governor, who made this statement at a meeting with the leadership of organized labor held at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan Abeokuta, noted that workers have been instrumental in the rapid economic growth the state is witnessing.

He promised the union leaders that Ogun State would not take second place in the implementation of the new minimum wage.

He said: “On the new minimum wage, all hands are on deck working assiduously, and I am sure that as always, we will not be number two in the implementation of the minimum wage.

“I have told my team that we should roll up our sleeves; we should work as hard as we can without putting undue pressure on our people. We should be creative, more efficient, block loopholes, and increase our revenue so that we can afford to pay the new minimum wage comfortably, and by the grace of God, we will not be second in terms of implementation.”

He pleaded for continued partnership from organized labor, emphasizing that their cooperation has led to economic prosperity, as the state budget has increased from less than N400 billion at the inception of the administration to the current N703 billion, with performance at 80 percent. He added that the state is looking at a trillion Naira budget for next year’s appropriation.

Governor Abiodun said he initiated the meeting as part of efforts to engage stakeholders involved in the movement of people to find solutions to the current situation caused by the fuel subsidy removal.

Abiodun, who took time to explain the intricacies of the oil sector, acknowledged that the current realities are the fallout of the federal government’s decision, led by President Bola Tinubu, to reposition the nation’s economy for sustainability, adding that as a responsible government, his administration has put several measures in place to cushion the effects on the people.

“We have commenced the energy transition program by converting our mass transit buses to CNG and launching electric motorcycles and tricycles.

“Yesterday (Monday), we held a meeting with the transport unions. They demanded that we ramp up the availability of these alternative means of fueling transportation in the state and widen the scope because of the success they have recorded.

“The federal government is making rice available for us to sell at very subsidized prices to everybody. The federal government is also providing us with 500 CNG kits that we will use to convert 509 commercial vehicles so that we can lower the cost of transportation,” Abiodun added.

The federal government, the governor continued, would send 20 CNG buses in the first instance to the state, while the state government would provide 100 CNG buses to transport unions in the state, saying that transportation costs are expected to be reduced by 50-80 percent as more people embrace electric motorcycles and CNG vehicles.

Governor Abiodun attributed the current fuel scarcity to operational and financial issues, while the hike in prices is due to subsidy removal and the floating of the Naira.

“With all that has been put in place, with all hands on deck and the commitment to energy transition, by the time we have transitioned from over-reliance on petrol to CNG to electric vehicles and other forms of energy, you will begin to see that the cost of transportation, which is where the problem really lies, will begin to drop.

“Therefore, our commitment to energy transition is total. It is the only path to sustainability. It has been done in other countries before,” he said.

He disclosed that a Presidential CNG Initiative comprising people from different sectors has been established, while the state has been made the hub for the transition of vehicles in the southwest due to its experience in the project.

Abiodun revealed that farmers’ markets would be set up in the three zones across the state to enable people to buy foodstuffs at affordable prices, while a task force comprising transport union executives and law enforcement agencies has also been established to monitor arbitrary hikes in transport fares, adding that labor would be involved in it.

Also speaking, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Hameed Benco, while appreciating the governor for always making organized labor part of his decision-making process, stressed the need to enforce price regulation as market men and women have taken advantage of the current economic situation to exploit the people.

He also called for a special arrangement to convey workers and students in primary and secondary schools to their offices and schools, respectively, saying it would help mitigate the hardship.

Contributing, the State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Akeem Lasisi, advocated for workers to work from their homes until the situation improves, while the Joint Negotiation Committee Chairman, Comrade Isa Olude, called for measures that would provide relief to workers and pensioners.

The Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, appreciated the governor for allaying workers’ fears, noting that he has demonstrated capacity and strong will in dealing with issues concerning workers’ welfare and well-being.

Hardship: Ogun To Release 100 CNG Buses – Gov Abiodun

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced that his administration would make available 100 brand new 18-seater Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for the use of transporters in the state.

The Governor, who made this known in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta on Monday, also said that the Federal Government would make available 20 CNG-enabled buses and 500 conversion kits to the state government during the week.

Governor Abiodun disclosed this at a meeting with transport unions on how to ensure fair transportation pricing in the state.

Prince Abiodun also announced the inauguration of an enforcement committee, comprising the State Police Commissioner, his counterpart in the Department of State Security Service (DSS), the Traffic Compliance Agency (TRACE), and heads of transport unions, as well as representatives from the Ministries of Transportation and Trade and Investment.

He said that the meeting was called because of events over the last week, including fuel scarcity, which is already abating, and the associated increase in the pump price of the product.

Prince Abiodun noted that there has always been an astronomical rise in transport fares anytime there is a slight adjustment in the pump prices of fuel.

According to him, the federal government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is not unmindful of the impact of the recent hike in the pump price, adding that the government is putting in place measures to lessen the impact on the people.

“The plans that we have as a state government, our plans are to, in the first instance, make 100 buses—100 18-seater buses—available to our transport unions. These will be 100 brand new CNG buses, and these buses will be brand buses, not no-name buses. We are talking about Toyota Hiace buses that we will give to you under a purchase agreement.

“We will make them available to you, and you can pay in installments over a period of time. You have demonstrated commitment and seriousness, and we are confident that when we give you these buses, you will utilize them responsibly and pay back on time.

“The Federal Government has also started an Energy Transition Program through the Presidential CNG initiative, and I can confirm to you that the Presidency has confirmed that they are making 20 buses available to Ogun State in the first instance—20 CNG buses. We will be getting those buses in the next week.

“They are also making 500 CNG conversion kits available to Ogun State for the immediate conversion of vehicles to CNG-enabled.

“I have been assured that the conversion kits, which is the first batch of 500, will reach us in the next five days. You know that we have a conversion center in Ogun State. We are a major conversion center for the Southwest, and we will begin the conversion of vehicles in accordance with how we agree in terms of scheduling who will come first and what vehicles we will begin to convert,” he said.

Governor Abiodun, while disclosing that the Federal Government is gradually leaving the business of sales and distribution of petroleum products to the private sector, noted that there was no need for transporters to increase transport fares by over 1000% when the price of PMS was just increased by 30%.

“We’ve seen in the past that when there is a change in pump prices by maybe 10%, we have noticed that our transporters also naturally increase fares because the cost of their operational equipment—be it motorcycles, tricycles, trucks, or buses—is impacted.

“What we’ve noticed is that when there is a change in the pricing of petroleum products by 10% to 20%, the impact that we see play out at times is like 2000%, and we want to dialogue to ensure the people are not stretched.

“The change in price is about 25% or 30%, so if pump prices have changed by like 25% to 30%, we should not see a difference in transport fares that is more than 25% or 30%,” he said.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, while reminding transporters that fuel is just a component of their transportation cost, urged them to do all within their power to ensure that the people of the state are not over-stretched.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abiodun Alamutu, on his part, disclosed that the increase in PMS isn’t such that should warrant the remarkable increase in the cost of transportation and called on transporters in the state to look at the possibility of having a more friendly transport fare regime.

Speaking on behalf of the transport heads, the National President of the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), Prince Samsudeen Apelogun, commended Governor Abiodun for revolutionizing the transport sector with the establishment of the Ministry of Transportation and the introduction of the E-mobility program.

He promised to call the stakeholders together and come up with a more friendly transport fare that is within their control.

I am not the first man to sleep with her, randy Ogun farmer arrested for defiling 14-year-old SS1 student

A 52-year-old farmer, Wasiu Sorunke, arrested for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old SSS1 student in Ogun State has insisted that he was not the first man to sleep with the minor.

The suspect, who lives at Owode Egba, was arrested after the mother of the girl reported him to the police.

The spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the arrest to the newsmen, said Sorunke, who admitted to being ‘randy,’ used to patronise a food vendor living in his neighbourhood and had become a family friend.

According to the PPRO, the food vendor’s daughter used to serve the suspect whenever he went there to eat. “She would also help her mother in the shop before going back home to do some chores and would return later to continue helping her mother,” Odutola stated.

Opinion: A Call for Re-evaluation of JAMB’s Age Policy for Tertiary Institution Admission: A Case for 16 Years as the Ideal Benchmark ~ ‘Kayode Ajani

The recent policy re-introduced by JAMB, setting 18 years as the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions, while perhaps well-intentioned, raises concerns regarding its relevance in today’s rapidly advancing world. Even though the policy is not new, and as we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, a time dominated by technology and fast-paced learning, the policy seems outdated and unrealistic. While this age restriction may have been sustainable in the past, when educational structures and societal norms were vastly different, it is no longer feasible to impose such limitations on our children, especially considering their evolving needs and capabilities.

The Case for 16 Years as the Ideal Admission Age:

We live in a world where children are growing up in a technologically enriched environment. Today’s students are exposed to information, learning tools, and global standards of education at an early age. With access to online resources, computer-based learning, and advanced educational systems, students are able to acquire knowledge more rapidly than in previous generations. It is common to see students excelling academically and intellectually at younger ages, a result to the evolution of our educational systems and resources.
Therefore, insisting on an 18-year age limit for tertiary education admission feels restrictive and ignores the potential of many talented and academically advanced students. By setting a rigid age benchmark, we inadvertently stifle the progress of students who are ready, capable, and willing to take on the challenges of higher education earlier.
In my opinion, 16 years is a more reasonable and realistic age for admission into tertiary institutions. At 16, most students have completed their secondary education, and many are mentally and emotionally prepared to pursue higher learning.

Additionally, it is crucial to address the age at which students complete secondary school. I propose that 15 years should be the benchmark age to write the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE). By the age of 15, students are typically in their final year of secondary school and are mature enough to take on the responsibility of these critical exams. This age is also suitable as it allows students who perform well to proceed to tertiary education at 16 without unnecessary delays.
While the above suggestions are rooted in ensuring that our students are not held back by age-related policies, there is also a need to regulate the practices of some private schools. In recent years, many private schools have been pushing students under the age of 15 to sit for SSCE, often driven by financial gains and the desire to showcase high exam pass rates. However, this practice is not in the best interest of the students.

Forcing underage students to sit for SSCE before they are emotionally and academically ready can have adverse effects. These students may struggle with the pressure of exams, miss out on the developmental growth that comes with age, and face challenges in higher education later on. It is important for the government to take action by setting a strict policy that prevents students under the age of 15 from taking SSCE. Schools that violate this rule should be sanctioned accordingly to protect the welfare and future of the students.

In conclusion, while the intention behind JAMB’s 18-year age policy may be to ensure maturity and readiness, it fails to recognize the changing realities of our world. Today’s students are learning and excelling at younger ages, and we must adapt our educational policies to reflect this progress. Setting the admission age to 16 is both reasonable and sustainable for the continued development of our youth and our nation.
Furthermore, regulating the age for writing SSCE to 15 years and ensuring that no student under this age is allowed to take the exam will maintain a balance between academic readiness and developmental growth. This will prevent schools from exploiting students and ensure that our education system remains fair, structured, and focused on the best outcomes for the students themselves.
It is time we re-evaluate these policies in the context of modern realities, embrace the talents of our younger generation, and create a system that truly nurtures their potential.
