Other members of the committee include, Sen. George Akume, H.E. Sullivan Chime, H.E. Ali Saad Birnin kudu, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, Alh. Suleiman Argungu, Dr. Mrs. Oluranti I. Adebule, and Dr. Mrs. Beta Edu.

Purported Banner Of Makinde For President Is Fake, Media Aide, Taiwo Adisa Disclaims

The Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde has disclaimed the purported banner circulated on social media advertising his intention for president in 2023.

This was contained in a statement made available through his Press Secretary, Taiwo Adisa as read in part:

“A fake news item, purportedly promoting Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, as a presidential hopeful in the 2023 election, has come to the attention of the Media Office Of The Governor.

“The banner advert, which has the picture of Governor Makinde and the Nigerian flag, as well as a picture of the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, allegedly promoting the presidential ambition of the governor, should be treated for what it is: Fake News!

A statement by Adisa on Monday, has disclaimed the alleged promo, describing it as one of the antics of fake news promoters.

“This is clearly the antics of purveyors of social media lap dogs, who are merely seeking to distract well-meaning people of Oyo State from the joy occasioned by the well-deserved promotion, to the Premier League, of the Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC).

“We believe that this fraudulent post alluded to the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Makinde is the handiwork of opposition elements, as APC’s social media lap dogs widely posted the fake news on their social media accounts.

“It is the usual practice of naysayers and detractors to seek to mix sour grapes in the basket of fruits, at a time when well-meaning citizens are celebrating.

“Let it be stated clearly, however, that Governor Makinde has no hand in any such campaign for the Presidency, as he has always stated that tomorrow only belongs to God.

“It is unthinkable that the governor, who has cautioned supporters against mounting a second-term campaign for him, would launch a 2023 presidential campaign at this period.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Makinde will not change his belief that power belongs to Almighty God and that only God knows the direction He is taking every of his creation.

“In the same vein, the Media Office of His Excellency has not and will not race ahead of time to promote an ambition that the governor has not declared.
“Therefore, we urge members of the public to ignore the fake news and see it as the shenanigans of a distressed opposition, which continues to show its desperation to retake power at all cost.

“Finally, members of the public are reminded that one of such callous posts by opposition elements once attempted to endanger the lives of innocent people in Oyo State at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, in May, 2020, when they posted that Covid-19 restrictions had been relaxed for religious gatherings, and attributed same to the Governor’s Media Office.”

Senate President, Lawan, Others To Be Conferred Chieftaincy Titles In Ekiti

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and six other prominent Nigerians are to be conferred with chieftaincy titles of Iyin-Ekiti.

Others are the former Director General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Maj.-Gen. Bamidele Olawumi and wife, an Israeli, Him Hille and wife, Mr Ayodeji Adeosun and Mrs Veronica Ndanusa.

The traditional ruler of Iyin-Ekiti, Oba Adeola Ajakaiye; the Oluyin of Iyin-Ekiti, disclosed this on Friday at a news conference in Iyin-Ekiti.

The conference signalled the week long events, beginning from Monday, commemorating the first anniversary of his ascendance to the throne.

Ajakaiye said the conferment of the chieftaincy titles was in recognition of the recipients’ contributions to the development of the community and the country at large.

According to the traditional ruler, other activities lined up for the anniversary include, N500 million launching of palace development fund, medical and optical checks. Other activities include the treatment and surgery for the people and football competition, among others. He called on sons and daughters of the town, both at home and in diaspora, to always contribute their quota to the development of the community. Secretary of the Oluyin-in-Council, Chief Opeyemi Arije, noted that the town has witnessed tremendous peace and development in the last one year of the new traditional ruler’s reign.

Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo urges elites to unite, not divide Nigerians

In a rousing speech Friday night, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo submitted that despite the nation’s current challenges, Nigerians must avoid drifting towards voices that appeal to darker impulses but instead counter fear, despair, and division with inspiring faith, creative optimism, and solidarity.

He specifically called on the elites to act in solidarity and build a consensus to settle contending issues in the nation and enlarge the circle of opportunity, especially for the young people.

In the same vein, the VP said the nation’s political, economic, and religious leaders must shun divisive narratives so as to bring all Nigerians together, heal rifts between communities and build bridges across divides.

Mr Osinbajo stated this on Thursday evening in Abuja during his keynote address at the Leadership Conference and Awards on the theme: National and Regional Insecurity: The Role of Political and Non-Political Actors in Stabilization and Consensus Building. The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, was chairman at the event attended by some state governors and members of the Federal Executive Council including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and Health Minister, Osagie Ehanire.

Referring to the phrase, “Noblesse Oblige” which in English means “nobility obligates,” the VP stated that it conveys the idea that nobility extends beyond mere entitlement and requires people of noble status to fulfill social responsibilities.

Explaining, he noted that “the highest office and duty of the elite is sacrifice, sacrifice, and more sacrifice.” The VP urged the nation’s elites to “be prepared to tell our constituencies the truth even if it hurts our political fortunes or our popularity.”

The vice president also called on the nation’s elites to stop depending or promoting tribal and religious fault lines for legitimacy, noting that “the external reasons we cite as reasons for our problems cannot thrive without severe internal weaknesses in our society.”

He added, “we must be able to say to the young men and women who say secession is the only way or that we should break up into little nations that that is the way of extinction not development. We must, as religious leaders, be able to tell our adherents that people of other religions are not their enemies, they are brothers and sisters and that they must not allow those who will benefit by division and strife to tell them differently.”

The VP stated further that all Nigerians must endeavour to promote civilised values – including affirming the value and sanctity of human life, rather than violence, ethnic and religious fault lines to drive national change.

While he emphasised the need to reform institutions for law and order to thrive, the VP also noted the importance of building consensus and mediating elite competition and conflict in “finding an acceptable ‘middle ground’ among contesting options to the resolution of issues.”

Emphasising the importance of “corporate social responsibility, good corporate citizenship” and what he termed ‘transformational elitism’ in nation-building, the VP stated that, “in times of crisis, the elite must broaden its horizons beyond their specific disciplines and sectors. Accordingly, business leaders understand that it is not enough to focus on making profits; businesses need a healthy society within which to operate and make profits. This is why there are now such concepts as corporate social responsibility and good corporate citizenship.”

Addressing how elites can drive national transformation, the vice president added: “the media elite must recognise that they have a responsibility to exercise discernment in the deployment of their platforms and must reflect upon whether they are amplifying the most insensate, intemperate, and incendiary voices in our midst while marginalising voices of reason.

“The political elite must accept through policies and actions, that the purpose of power must be to better the lives of those we serve and give the young great hope for the future. Once we put on the lens of social responsibility, different and higher imperatives come into play. This is what transformational elitism looks like.”

The vice president, who is also a lawyer, had a word for his colleagues in the legal profession. According to him, “legal practitioners understand that the imperative of transformative leadership in the legal sector today calls for the Bar and the Bench to insist on the integrity of our system of justice, to insist on speed in the dispensation of cases and to call out anyone who compromises the system.”

He then turned to the attendees at the Leadership Newspaper Conference, saying “those of us in this conference are by virtue of our pedigree and status, members of a privileged minority. The contrast between our exceptional circumstances and the material conditions of the majority of our compatriots imposes a moral obligation on us to work for the common good, towards a society that works for all by spreading the circle of opportunity.”

Highlighting how the nation’s elites are integral to the process of deepening national unity, the VP said, “in times of crises, we learn and relearn lessons in solidarity and in the value of pulling together.

“In times of adversity, societies buffeted by uncertainty and anxiety are tempted to drift towards voices that appeal to our darker impulses, to those that traffic in fear, despair, and division. Elites such as those gathered here today must counter such voices by inspiring faith, creative optimism, and solidarity,” Mr Osinbajo counselled.

Speaking of himself, he assured that “I remain unyielding in my belief that we will prevail over adversity by the strength of our togetherness. The present moment is crying out for leaders that can bring our people together, heal rifts between communities and build bridges across divides.”

While calling for compromise and broad-based constructive engagements on national issues, the VP reiterated the need for all Nigerians, regardless of tribe, ethnicity, or religion, to come together for nation-building purposes, stating that, “the recognition that the system is not working optimally for many of our people should inspire a broad-based movement for reform that works to recalibrate the present order and attune it more to the aspirations of our people.”

He urged Nigerians to resist temptations of being led astray by those with ulterior motives in pushing particular agitations.

According to him, “it is also understandable that we may find that some of these agitations resonate with us. We may consider them legitimate causes and identify with them as such. However, the temptation is that our sympathy with legitimate causes blinds us to the destructive and illegitimate means employed by those that pursue these causes. This is a temptation that we must resist.”

Backing up his assertion, Mr Osinbajo quoted Martin Luther King Jr., who famously said, “Destructive means cannot bring about constructive ends.”

He continued: “in a country as diverse as ours, the aim of our national conversations should be to promote a consensus for progress rather than to promote discord and disharmony. We must be committed to continuing this tradition of renewing our nation through the tried and trusted means of conciliation, compromise, and consensus.”

The VP further said, “there is no doubt that our country is going through times of trial and testing. Many of our people are dealing with adversity on several fronts. It is understandable for discontent to emerge and inspire agitation. In a democracy, agitation – the act of making our voices heard in respect of our concerns – is entirely legitimate. What is profoundly problematic is when we employ destructive and illicit means in pursuing agitation.

“Our system is not perfect, but it does prescribe the ways in which discontent can be channelled through constitutionally-guaranteed rights to vote, to associate, to protest, and to express ourselves. Change is possible through the system, but only if we engage it rather than destroy it. Thus, while the current system is not perfect, it can only be improved as more of our people engage it,” the VP declared.

He then explained that “no project of social renewal and transformation can succeed without the involvement and leadership of elites” or “in a climate of socio-political instability”, adding that “the task before us is that of renewing the social contract, creating more inclusive institutions, growing the economy and generating opportunities for our population.”

Oke-Ogun Residents Cry Out, Want Gumi’s Visit To Igboho Town Probed By DSS

The Alliance for Oke-Ogun Development a socio-political group in the Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State, has alleged that Sheik Ahmad Gumi’s recent visit to Igboho town, in Orelope Local Government of Oyo State, was an attempt to relocate fleeing terrorists that are being smoked out of the Northern Nigeria to Oke-Ogun.

The National Coordinator of the AOD, Chief Abiodun Fasasi, in a statement on Thursday said Gumi’s visit was a clandestine move by him and others with what he called ‘Fulanisation Agenda’ to make Oke-Ogun area another hotbed of crisis between the dwellers and the marauding herders.

The body raised concern over the recent video of the Islamic scholar in which he was seen in town and called on the Department of State Services to investigate Gumi and his hosts in the town.

The group claimed that the recent victory of the Nigerian Army over terrorists in the Northeast and other parts of the Northern Nigeria, necessitated the visit of Gumi and others to Oke-Ogun area and called on the traditional rulers in the region to be wary of insiders who are ready to sell out to terrorists.

The OAD also called on the federal government, especially the Department of State Services to invite Gumi and begin immediate investigation into the real reasons for their visitation to Oke-Ogun area.

The statement reads, “It is rather mindboggling to hear that Sheik Gumi and his co-travelers were   in Igboho ,Oke-Ogun, Sheik Gumi is known all over the world as the harbinger, mastermind , mouthpiece ,solicitor and patron of bandits in Nigeria. To him, there’s nothing wrong with banditry, as a matter of fact, he sees it as a flourishing business.

“It is more disturbing that an indigene of Oke Ogun can willingly be a host to a personality like Gumi, we want the DSS to investigate the real reason for his visit and the host equally has to be investigated. This is a person consumed by his passion for banditry to the extent of drawing an analogy between banditry and Niger Delta militancy.

“As if that’s not enough, he is the one saddled with the responsibility of championing the course of amnesty for the bandits, he recently accused the Nigerian President of political gullibility for tackling the bandits, trivializing the military action ongoing in Zamfara known as festival of fire by tagging it unwise decision that no reasonable solution can come out of.

“Against the backdrop of the above, convincingly we now know better who Sheik Gumi is, having seen the handwriting on the wall as the military action is neutralizing, eliminating and destroying the bandits in their scores and as the bandits are fleeing the northern parts of the country especially Zamfara and its environs, it’s unacceptable for Gumi and his bandits to see Oke-Ogun, Oyo State as their haven.

“This will never be condoned, without mincing words, we can say Gumi has come as an advance party for the relocation of the bandits.

“The apex Sociopolitical group in Oke Ogun, Alliance For Oke Ogun Development, uses this medium to charge the Federal government, the Oyo State Chief Security Officer, Governor Seyi Makinde, to look into this case and nip in the bud any untoward actions that Sheik Gumi’s visit may cause our peaceful region.

“We also call on our traditional rulers and the entire people of the State to be at alert against individuals that are strangers and might portend danger to our wellbeing.”

Ondo Govt Bans Unions’/Associations’ Activities Over Public Exploitation

The Ondo State Government has taken measures to protect residents in the state amid soaring costs and incessant increases in prices of goods and services by artisans including farm produce and food items.

In this regard, the state government has barred all Trading Unions and Associations under the umbrella of Ondo State United Artisan Group, from fixing and enforcing uniform prices of goods and services being sold/rendered by their members and non-members.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo said the decision was taken in the overall socio-economic interest of the people of the State.

The statement:

“Government had before now, watched with discomfort and dismay, the economic suffocation of the people with unimaginable increases in prices of goods and services in markets, shops and other sales outlets across the state.

“Even without due regard for market forces, it is obvious that associations and unions are largely behind this unwholesome act.

“The state government has decided to act decisively even as the public deserves protection from this undesirable exploitation under some guises.

“Therefore, fixing market prices and imposing fixed exorbitant prices on the people under the guise of association or union must be stopped forthwith.

“Accordingly, as part of the measures, Individuals, Artisans, Traders and providers of services as well as farmers are henceforth allowed to operate, sell their produce and render any service in any part of the state as they may deem profitable, based on the principle of demand and supply and prevailing market forces. This is just as membership of associations and unions remains voluntary as provided for in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

“Consequently, Government’s right to regulate the activities of Trading Associations and Artisan groups has to be invoked in the interest of residents. Therefore, on no account should any Union/Association fix or enforce prices of goods and services.

“Similarly, there shall be no sale of tickets to Artisans/Traders by any Association/Union without due approval of the state Government through the Internal Revenue Service”.

“All concerned are, therefore, advised to adhere strictly to this directive as any person or group found to be flouting it will be made to face the full weight of the extant laws.

“It is to be noted too that this directive takes effect from TODAY in all markets and sales outlets across the 18 LGAs of the state”.

Leaked Audio: Igboho gets angry easily, wants things faster – Lawyer

Ibrahim Salami, the Beninese lawyer to Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Igboho, has reacted to a leaked audio of the activist.

From the audio, Igboho berated Salami, for allegedly disrespecting him. He claimed the lawyer abandoned him and kept him waiting for over 15minutes while speaking to someone else.

Igboho had expressed confidence in gaining freedom if returned to Nigeria by Benin Republic.

Salami, in an interview with BBC, faulted the activist’s words stating that the leaked audio was dangerous for the justice being pursued on behalf of Igboho.

He said Igboho was angry with him and other members of the legal team because he felt he had no reason to remain in police detention for “not committing any crime”.

“He wants things to be done faster,” the lawyer said in Yoruba.

Salami, who attempted to resist speaking on the matter in the media, also explained that Igboho never intended to make his complaint public.

“Igboho is someone that gets angry easily and if I have a challenge with a client, it is not something to be discussed in the media,” he added.

Igboho was said to have made a similar complaint to the leadership of Ilana Omo Oodua, who is handling legal matters for him in Benin Republic.

The Benin-Republic-based lawyer hinted that the issues have been resolved, adding that he was continuing his work with other members of the team.

He noted that Igboho has a right to be angry with the way he was detained in violation of the law. “He has a right to be angry,” the lawyer added.

A source among the leadership of the umbrella body of Yoruba Self-Determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua, said Salami was recruited because of his influence in Benin Republic.

According to the source, Salami understood the legal system in Benin and he is also one of the leading lawyers and consultants to the government.

“Beyond being a professor, Salami understands the legal system. He is a government lawyer. He was very instrumental in stopping Igboho’s extradition the moment he was arrested.

“We also have some challenges with him, but we are hopeful that he will adjust going forward. For instance, after every sitting, he briefs the press first before his clients. That is wrong for elders and causing confusion.

“Apart from Igboho, he is dealing directly with Professors Banji Akintoye and Wale Adeniran, and they don’t get updates from him immediately.”

Why VAT law will be beneficial to Lagos – Obasa, residents speak at public hearing

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr) Mudashiru Obasa, on Wednesday, said the proposed law on Value Added Tax (VAT) would help the state meet more of its developmental goals.

Obasa said this during a public hearing on a bill for the Lagos State Value Added Tax (VAT) and for other connected purposes.

This was as stakeholders at the hearing commended the Lagos State Assembly and its leadership for their determination to ensure that the bill becomes law.

In his remark, Obasa noted that states have always felt financially strangulated and unfairly treated by the Federal Government in her administration and appropriation of receipts of VAT.

Speaking through the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Wasiu Eshilokun-Sanni, who represented him, Obasa said that Lagos state generates an excess of N500 billion in VAT.

“If we go by generation trend in tandem with the N2.4 trillion forecasted by the FIRS, Lagos state will be contributing about 55 percent of the total VAT collectables in the entire country.

“But what do we get in return? Some paltry sum. This injustice and inequity are part of the premises on which some of the extant agitations are founded.”

The Speaker said this agitation had been helped by the judgement of a Federal High Court in the case of the Attorney General of Rivers State versus the Federal Inland Revenue Service (2020) in which the rights of Rivers state (by extension, other states) were upheld.

“Though the FIRS has expectedly appealed the judgement to the Court of Appeal, it is expected that the appellate court will follow the sound logic in the Federal High Court decision,” he said.

The Speaker said the proposed law would allow the state more resources to meet its developmental goals.

“More so, this action brings to the fore of actualization, the true federalism for which we have been agitating,” he added.

On his part, the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosere Onigbanjo (SAN), said every state of the federation stood to benefit from the judgement of the court.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, Hon Rotimi Olowo, said even though Lagos is prosperous, it can do better and VAT will help with the resources it needs.

“We know that the resources in the state are overstretched,” he said adding that the proposed law has benefits on the state and its residents.
