Ajimobi 74th Posthumous Birthday: Abiodun Makes Case For Diversification Of Nigeria’s Economy To Non Oil Sector

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has said that Nigeria’s economy would be sustainable if attention is shifted from oil to the non oil sector.

He said the nation could achieve this by diversifying into mineral resources, agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, and technology.

Speaking at the 6th Senator Abiola Ajimobi Roundtable and 74th Posthumous Birthday, organized by the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation in collaboration with the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan on Saturday, Governor Abiodun noted that the world is gradually moving away from fossil fuel, hence the need for the country to begin to look for other sources of revenue.

He said: “As I have mentioned earlier, the world is slowly moving away from fossil fuels as more countries embark on energy transition, therefore the need to actively diversified economy into non-oil sectors such as mineral resources, agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, and technology.

“Nigeria is blessed with an abundance of over 40 commercially viable mineral and natural resources that we as a people and government have not explored. While no official figures have been put forward, industry experts report that Nigeria’s solid mineral deposits are valued at over $1 trillion with some estimates as high as $5 trillion.

“Take, for example, my State, Ogun State, where we have over 15 natural mineral resources present in commercial quantities in all our local governments but only actively mine limestone, granite and laterite.

“In fact, we are the largest producer of solid mineral resources in Nigeria and account for just over 32.04 metric tons of mineral resources or 37.6% of national output.

“Imagine if, as a country, we are able to tap into all other solid minerals like gold, lithium, tantalite (a crucial mineral for electronics manufacturing), tin, barite, etc. The possibilities are endless, especially if we engage in value-chain addition in the country.”

He said the theme of the roundtable, “Re-engineering Nigeria For Sustainable Development: Options, Costs and Prospects”, was apt, as factors like youth engagement, collaboration with international organizations and neighbouring countries, embracing technological advancement and fostering innovation could accelerate economic diversification and growth.

Governor Abiodun lamented Nigeria’s over- reliance on oil exports, which he said exposes her mono-economy as unsustainable in the face of volatility of oil prices due to supply and demand, market forces, vandalization and oil theft.

Prince Abiodun emphasized that re-engineering Nigeria for sustainable development is an intricate and multifaceted endeavour, expressing optimism that the nation’s abundant resources and youthful population provide the needed solid foundation, but that addressing challenges such as infrastructure deficits, and economic diversification was imperative.

Senator Ajimobi, the governor stated, was as quintessential as he was kind, gifted and an exceptional communicator, who through hardwork, attained early success in the oil and gas industry and emerged a developmental political juggernaut worthy of emulation.

In his keynote address, the Minister for Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, attributed the nation’s problems to leadership and fellowship issues.

He said that though Nigeria is blessed with abundance of resources and has contributed quality men and women to lead many international organizations, she is still far from development due to lack of quality leadership.

He lamented that many multi-nationals are pulling out of Nigeria because of high cost of doing business in the country, noting that it was high time Nigeria began to focus on education, youth development, technical training, while the health and power sector should be revitalized and leadership and fellowship issues should be dealt with.

Moderator of the event, Tajudeen Akanji, in his opening remarks, said that despite the nation’s wealth, it does not show on the citizens as there is poverty in the land.

He said to re-engineer the country entails broad and general education for all, reasonable income for the people, functional middle class, functional administration, social services, and respect for the rule of law.

The communities, whom government tagged “illegal farmers and timber contractors” were ordered to vacate the area on or before January 15, 2024.

The state Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun, gave the order during a meeting with farmers, village heads and timber contractors at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

FG Commends Abiodun, Says Agro Cargo Airport will boost Ogun, Nigeria’s economy

The Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun has said that the Ogun State Agro-Cargo Airport, when completed, would add value to the lives of the people and contribute to the rapid growth of the state’s and the nation’s economy.

The Minister stated this while fielding questions from newsmen after being conducted round the airport by Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The minister described the airport as a major economic project of the Prince Abiodun-led administration, which, when fully operational, will be a game-changer for the state.

He said: “I have had the opportunity to be here before and I know that the ARISE Agro-Cargo Industrial and Export Processing Zone, is a major economic achievement that speaks to the possibility of rapid growth of the economy, which is the objective of Mr. President to have more investments like this.

“It is the type of investment that grows the economy, that creates jobs, that reduces poverty and it is good for the people of Ogun State in particular as well as Nigeria in general that new economic life is being breath into the area.

“As for this particular facility, this airport which is reputable to have the longest runway in Nigeria, I can see the terminal building receiving finishing touches to make it a full blown international passengers and cargo airport.”

Edun who described the project as “very impressive” with high standard, said the governor has leveraged on his experience in the corporate world, coupled with zeal, efficiency and attention to details, to execute major projects in the state, saying the airport is a testimony.

Speaking further, the Minister said: “I congratulate the governor and the people of Ogun State on what has been achieved so far but more importantly, we look forward to the end result which is the creation of jobs, increased production, increased opportunities for farmers to produce and sell their products at good price and in good time without any of the usual post harvest lost and lose on transit that one get from agricultural products.

“The airport is good for the economy of Ogun State and Nigeria, and we would like to see more of this. We encourage other states to join the private sector to achieve such.”

He said the government at the centre is working towards creating a stable economy through the creation of a business-friendly environment to attract both local and foreign investors to the country.

“We have to get the economy going, get the inflation down, stabilize the exchange rate and get the export and export revenue increased so that it can be a source of funding for the growing the economy,” he added.

The finance minister, who acknowledged the current hardship in the country, however, emphasized that government has come up with some intervention schemes to cushion the effects, noting that transition period when reforms are implemented, always come with pain, assuring that there is hope in the days to come.

“We have wide range of intervention programmes like the provision of fertilizer, food for the people around the country, extra funding for states for infrastructure, funding for production of rice, wheat, maize and cassava and funding, including Grants, free money for Small, Medium Scale Enterprises, particularly the smallest (micro), among others,” Edun submitted.

Why We’re Converting 46.3-Hectare Agodi Gardens Forest Into Estate — Oyo

The Oyo State Commissioner of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mr Williams Akin-Funmilayo, has stated that the planned Housing Estate Project, Baywood Estate, will not consume the Agodi Botanical Gardens.

The commissioner, who noted that some residents of the state have confused the site of the planned estate to include Agodi Botanical Gardens, clarified that while the garden sits on 9.11 hectares of land, the large expanse of 46.3 hectares of forest behind the Gardens is to be converted to Baywood Housing Estate.

Akin-Funmilayo stated this while conducting newsmen round the Agodi Botanical Gardens and the planned site of the estate, noting that the clarifications became important to educate the people of the state.

Noting that Agodi Gardens is one of the remaining legacies inherited by the Governor ‘ Seyi Makinde administration, the commissioner maintained that the recreational facility will be protected and even upgraded to an international Botanical Garden in due course.

The commissioner equally debunked the false allegation that the state government had been cutting down the trees in the forest, adding that the state government has taken the decision that 80 per cent of the trees in the forest would be retained despite the housing estate project.

Akin-Funmilayo, who took journalists round the forest, explained that the government has taken the proactive step to convert the forest to a housing estate because the forest has become a hideout for hoodlums, thieves, kidnappers and perpetrators of many heinous acts, not only in the night but also in broad daylight.

He said the conversion of the forest to a housing estate is a laudable development that would benefit the people of the state by reducing housing deficit.

Speaking to newsmen after the tour of the two sites, the commissioner explained the different segmentations of the vast land, saying “there are three identities here; the garden, fishery department, and forest, which the state government is trying to build on. Agodi Garden remains intact. But the forest has become a threat, which we have heard and seen. Many people have lost their lives here. Hoodlums and thieves waylay people around the corridor even during broad daylight. Moving from Parliament Road to Premier Junction can be dreadful.

“I believe that you as journalists are now aware of where the proposed estate is going to be sited and I believe you have seen for yourselves that trees here are still intact and they have not been brought down as being insinuated.

“Behind me is Agodi Gardens and this river divides the Agodi Gardens and our prospective estate. At the extreme there, we have the zoological garden, which is still there.”

The commissioner, who showed a survey plan of the area to newsmen, indicated that the whole expanse of land comprised the Agodi Gardens, Office of the Department of Fisheries, and the forest and that the portion that belonged to Agodi Gardens is 9.1 hectares, with trees marking the natural division between the garden and the rest of the land, while fishery department sits on 1.2 hectares of land at the corner.

“The rest of the forest is 46.63 hectares, which is now being developed into Baywood Estate. There is no directive, policy or instruction from any quarters that says Agodi Garden should be converted to a housing estate and there is no intention to alter the constructions here. So, the idea that the garden will be converted is a figment of the imagination of the people who refuse to seek the truth,” he said.
Responding to how the conversion of forest to a housing estate could impact on climatic conditions, the commissioner said: “One of the values of this estate is the preservation of these trees and that is why the name of the estate is ‘Baywood.’ So, the wood is highly significant.

“Oyo State residents should know and rest assured that the government will preserve this forest to the best of our ability, because this administration understands the implications of deforestation and its import on climate change. There might be a few casualties in the provision of infrastructure, but I can tell you that they will be re-planted.

“When this project is completed, it is going to be in a world of its own and a beauty to behold. So, I am reassuring you that the state government has nothing to do with Agodi Gardens as far as the estate construction is concerned. The area that will be converted to an estate is where we are now.

“The reality is that people cannot pass through this road freely between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m.without fear, because of the high rate of criminality around this corner and the fact that there is vast forest to escape into. Thus, the government is justified for trying to add value to the environment by providing housing instead of keeping the forest and allowing it to remain a habitat for criminals, kidnappers, and evil doers in the society.

“The government of Oyo State does not have any intention to convert Agodi Garden to a housing estate. The plan is to upgrade the garden to an international botanical garden, which will serve the people of Oyo State better than it is right now,” Akin-Funmilayo added.
