The Alliance For Oke-Ogun Development AOD has called on Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde to take a drastic step against the resurgence of banditry and killings in Oke-Ogun.

This was contained in a statement signed and sent today to ODUDUWA NEWS by the Head of Planing and Strategies, Comr Ismail Alani as read in part:

“Time has riped to cry out and our voice be heard by all concerned authorities in Oke-Ogun, Oyo State and Nigeria.

“It is a known fact that Gov Makinde had invested on the security of people in Oyo State aftermath of Igangan incident last year. But to our surprise Oke-Ogun is yet to get her fair share of those benefits from Gov Makinde’s investment in the state.

“This is because, the way things are going now in Oke-Ogun calls for worries as a responsible youth group and tomorrow leaders of the region. It appears to us that those killer herdsmen who invaded Ibarapa last year have shifted their bestalities to Oke-Ogun region.

“This could be seen with an alam that was raised by WSN Oyo State Commander, Gen Togun few weeks ago. It’s sad that after the alam were raised by him and some of our members, leaders and government from Oke-Ogun and Oyo state government took no action in preparedness to forestall possible violence attack by Fulani marauders. Regrettably, before our very eyes, last weekend a violence attack was launched in Alaga Oke-Ogun, Atisbo local government area.

“The attack left scores in critical condition, our investigation revealed that many of the victims of this attack are between life and death.

“Similarly, on Thursday 23rd of June 2022 another attack was reported in Saki East local government area, investigation is still on to accertain the degree of the attack as at time of issue this communiqué.

“We hereby as usual call on the government of oyo state led by Gov Seyi Makinde, his Deputy Engr Rauf Remi Olaniyan, chairpersons and all other political office holders including political appointees from Oke- Ogun to show more concern to the plight of ordinary people living in the region.

“We also called on our traditional rulers to swing into action with sole aim of finding a lasting solutions to the mirage of security challenges confronting our region.

“It’s our hope that government, traditional rules, religious leaders, social groups, media and other stakeholders will work in unison to confront the scourge before it consume all of us because nobody and nowhere is save in oke-ogun region today.

“We are entitled to better live irrespective of where we came from”.

“Although security of lives and properties is paramount responsibility of government, but government cannot do it alone except with cooperation of the entire citizenry and as we can see from the report gotten all over the country, Oyo State is relatively peaceful, this was not achieved by the effort of government alone but with the efforts of the all stakeholders, most especially the security commanders.

“This meeting is aimed at getting the situation report from various quarters on security as well as to dialogue on what to do as stakeholders and fine tune necessary steps, this will help government to put necessary machinery in place for people in the state to sleep with their two eyes closed and as the operation of the Amotekun corps is concerned, we have perfected the process of employing 500 more hands to enhance their performance and further deepen the security architecture of our State.”

While discussing the consideration on whether to incorporate local vigilante members into the existing security team for the enhancement of security in the State, Makinde urged all stakeholders and the general public to join hands with his administration in ensuring peaceful environment.

Inflation: CBN’s Policies Hurting Nigerians, Printing More Money Is Dangerous – World Bank, Economists

World Bank and the Economist Intelligence Unit, EIU, have spoken out about Nigeria’s growing money supply. They are concerned that the CBN creating money to pay the federal government deficit in the face of declining income will hurt the economy.

Their warning comes at a time when the amount of money in circulation in the economy continues to increase.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has been urged to stop the printing of money as the currency supply in the economy reached a record high.

The advice is coming from the Economist Intelligence Unit, EIU and economists at the World Bank. The EIU in particular said the central bank might have been breaking the law which stipulates a limit beyond which it shall lend to the government.

The EIU noted that the ability of the CBN to tame Nigeria’s inflation through raising rates is being undermined by its continued direct financing of the budget deficit.

“Building credibility in the target rate (of inflation) has not been a priority in recent years. The continued printing of money at the same time as tightening policy would prevent effective control of the price level”

Nigeria has rules that limit how much lending the central bank should offer the government and there are statutes that forbid the government from reckless borrowing, but the EIU inferred that these rules have been contravened repeatedly. EIU added: “All prudential rules on the government borrowing through the (CBN’s) overdraft facility have long been broken”

The World Bank on its part says the Central Bank of Nigeria’s development finance intervention is fuelling inflation in the short term and weakening the ability of the apex bank to control inflation. In a new report titled the ‘Nigeria Development Update (June 2022): The Continuing Urgency of Business Unusual, the World Bank said, there is huge money in supply in Nigerian economy.

Currency in circulation has been on the increase in 2022, and when the current data is compared to N3.29 trillion at the start of the year over 0.62 per cent or N20.5billion have been added to the economy. Meanwhile, NNPC remittances to FG continue to decline.

Waterfield Luxury Hotel Akobo, Ibadan

Lagos State government on Thursday said that the land where the 21-storey building that collapsed in Ikoyi would be taken over by the state government.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Idris Salako, who stated this, said that the state government is taking over the land in line with the state physical planning law which said owners of collapsed buildings would forfeit the land to the state.

According to him, though the state government has not taken a decision on what it would use the land for, but whenever it wants to put it to use, it is likely to be used for something that will help to remember those who died in the building.

Speaking at a briefing on the handing over of the complex to the contractor engaged by the government to demolish the structures, Salako stated that the demolition would be done having the interest of the public including the residents at heart.

Also commenting, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs, Tayo Bamgbose-Martins, said that the state government has no business with those who have paid to own apartments in the building that collapsed, the reason the state government would not consider compensating them.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said the buildings are to go down because one of the recommendations of the panel set up by the government was for the buildings to be demolished because they failed the integrity test.

The commissioner promised that any action taken on the project would be in the interest of the public, disclosing that a stakeholders’ meeting had previously been held to interact with residents and stakeholders in the building industry.

Omotoso, who asked that a minute of silence be observed in honour of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate accident, took the action of demolishing the structure in the interest of all.

Managing Director of Edge of Designs, Theophilus Lewo, said the deconstruction would take about 90 days but might be extended due to weather, rain and the safety of the workers. He said his company would not be demolishing the building, but deconstruct the building using a controlled method.
