The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency has confirmed the death of two persons, and injury to four persons following a head-on collision along the Sagamu/Ijebu-Ode expressway. 

This was revealed by the spokesperson of the state-owned traffic outfit, Babatunde Akinbiyi, in a statement in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Monday.

The road crash involved a Howo Truck with no registration number and a Toyota Hiace Bus with BEN 823 ZW.

The cause of the accident was attributed to excessive speed on the part of the bus driver leading to loss of control thereby crashing into the truck.

“Accident victims have been rescued to the  Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, while the bodies of two who lost their lives were deposited at the morgue,” he said.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has set up a committee for the coronation and presentation of staff of office to the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

The committee is headed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr Ademola Ojo.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who is also a member of the committee.

Other cabinet members in the committee are Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Mrs Toyin Balogun.

The coronation committee also include the son of the incoming Olubadan, Prince Folaseke Owolabi Olakulehin, Chief Dr. Onikepo Akande CON, His Royal Majesty Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi, His Royal Majesty Oba Lateef Gbadamosi Adebimpe, Chief Hazeem Gbolarumi, Mr Toye Arulogun, Bishop Ademola Moradeyo, CP Sunday Odukoya (Rtd.), Mogaji Abduljeleel Adanla and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Ramota Agberemi-Dabo.

Recall that Governor Seyi Makinde approved the nomination by the Olubadan-In-Council of Oba Olakulehin as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland and subsequently fixed July 12 for the coronation and presentation of the Staff of Office.

A cholera outbreak has been reported at Kirikiri Medium Security Prison in Lagos, with 25 cases confirmed, according to the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi.

This development contradicts the Nigerian Correctional Service’s earlier claim that custodial centres nationwide were free of cholera.

The commissioner reported that urgent medical and environmental measures have been implemented successfully, and no new cholera-related deaths have been reported in the last 72 hours.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has also recorded 118 suspected cholera cases in Katsina State, although all tests returned negative.

The cholera outbreak has affected 31 states, with 1,528 suspected cases, 65 confirmed cases, and 53 deaths reported since the beginning of the year.

President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a multi-sectoral cabinet committee to combat the epidemic.

The Lagos State Government has intensified countermeasures to eliminate transmission, and interventions are yielding dividends as residents adhere to public health information and advice.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has donated 10,000 doses of pharmaceuticals to support prison health facilities with prevention strategies for about 3,200 inmates.

Immediate water and sanitation issues have been corrected, and ongoing inspections of other correctional facilities in the state are underway.

The source of the original outbreak two weeks ago has been traced to unregulated street beverages and contaminated water supply.

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede has raised a Disciplinary Team to look into the case of two errant officers of the Commission who allegedly assaulted a female staff of Regional Hotel, Ojo, Lagos.

The officers were sighted in a viral video assaulting the staff of the hotel in an early morning sting operation on Thursday,  June 27,  2024.

Olukoyede ordered the arrest of the two officers and has directed them to appear before a joint Disciplinary Team comprising the Appointment, Promotion and Disciplinary Committee, APDC and the Department of Ethics and Integrity. 

They are billed to appear before the Team on Monday, July 1, 2024 at the Corporate Headquarters of the Commission, Abuja.

The team would look into the case of the officers and recommend appropriate disciplinary measures to be taken against them. 

Olukoyede stressed that no stone will be left unturned in getting the officers to account for their unprofessional conduct.

About 20 travellers have been reportedly kidnapped along the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode Expressway by gunmen on Sunday at about 9. pm

The gunmen were said to have ambushed the travellers between Sagamu Area Command of the Nigeria Police and Ilisan township.

Ilisan Development Council Chairman, Wemmy Osude disclosed to newsmen that the information reaching him suggests that the “kidnapping incident occurred between the Area Command and Ilisan City Gate.

According to Osude, “A resident of Ilisan (name unconfirmed) was reportedly shot in the knee and is receiving medical attention at Babcock Teaching Hospital.

“Other victims were taken into the bush. While waiting for additional information, please contact your loved ones who may be plying that road at about this time to be cautious.”

Osude who confirmed the incident also disclosed that he had spoken to the Sagamu Police Area Commander about the kidnap incident.

“I have spoken to the Sagamu Area Commander about this incident, and hopefully, we trust that all the security agents will go after these criminals and rescue these people.”

She made the disclosure via her Twitter handled shortly after the rumour of Olu Jacob’s death spread on social media platform.

An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ogbomoso has barred the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye and the kingmakers led by Chief Sobalaje Otolorin from removing the Chief Imam of the town, Sheik Teliat Yunus Ayilara.

It could be recalled that both the Soun and the Chief Imam have been at loggerheads in the last few months.

ODUDUWA NEWS learnt that Muslims in in the town under the auspices of Registered Trustees of Ogbomoso Muslim Youths Forum had dragged the traditional ruler and the kingmakers who are members of Soun-In-Council to court over planned removal of the cleric.

The case with the suit number HOG/31/2024, filed at Oyo State High Court Ogbomoso Division, has Registered Trustees of Ogbomoso Muslim Youths Forum as plaintiff, while the Soun and the Soun-In-Council are the defendants.

The court, presided over by Justice K.B. Olawoyin, on Wednesday 26th June, 2024, barred the traditional ruler and the Soun-In-Council from removing the Chief Imam.

It barred the “defendants/respondents whether by themselves, their agents, privies, officers under their control, or any persons acting on the instruction of the defendants/respondents from suspending or removing the holder of office of Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoso land (in person of Alhaji Yunus Olusina Ayilara) or in anyway disturbing or tampering with the office of Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoso land pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice.

“The defendants/respondents and their agents, servants and/or privies and/or any persons acting under their control or on their instructions are also restrained in the interim from doing anything under any guise whatsoever to interfere with or impede the Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoso land from carrying out the functions and duties of his office as Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoso land pending the hearing and determination of the Motion On Notice filed herein.

“I put on record that I have taken judicial notice of the full names of the Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoso land as Alhaji Taliat Yunus Olusina Ayilara and that of the 1 defendant/respondent as His Imperial Majesty Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye (Orumogege III), the Soun of Ogbomoso land.

“The hearing of the Motion on notice dated and filed 26/6/2024 is adjourned to 1/7/2024”.

Osun Masterminds is very weak on research and still laced with partisanship in its assessment of the performance of Osun State government, the Spokesperson to the Osun State Governor, Mallam Olawale Rasheed has disclosed.

Responding to the press conference by the group, the Spokesperson said fertilizers from the federal-state programme started arriving in Osogbo late Thursday. The Ministry issued a statement on Friday announcing the arrival with more trucks still coming in as at the time of filing this report.

How do you start sharing fertilizers that are still arriving in the state? What better way to be transparent than the statement from the state government on arrivals including the number of trucks?

We note that the group is being mischievous and partisan as usual as it still finds it hard to abandon its old root as an appendage of the opposition during the pre-2022 election.

Another example of the group’s hypocrisy is the reference to Dele Yes sir road. The Iwo – Osogbo road was awarded to Peculiar Ultimate Concerns by former Governor Gboyega Oyetola. The project is still ongoing and the contractor has done only about 30 percent of the job.

As an inherited project, the state government has been monitoring the execution of the project for quality assurance and the contract cannot be terminated unless there is concrete proof of infraction. Any termination based on hearsay and political allegations may land the state in costly litigation.

The state government is enforcing the highest level standard on the ongoing constructions across the state including the Lameco-Okefia dualisation and flyover bridges. So far, there is no evidence, technical or otherwise of any work under the infra plan being substandard. The government has zero tolerance for substandard work and we affirm that the projects are being supervised by top quality and certified engineers.

The public knows the administration will investigate any genuine complaints. All previous complaints were investigated and they were found to be baseless and more of political taunts. The administration noticed that criticisms from groups like Masterminds are borne out of political partisanship and confusion occasioned by the widely acknowledged good performance of Governor Adeleke.

As much as the administration welcomes feedback and genuine criticisms, the government will not succumb to blackmail and busybody political attacks. It is time for Masterminds to join the political process and stop fronting for the defeated club of yesterday.

The Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps says 17 persons died in 16 road crashes during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration in the state.

Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Anthony Uga, gave the figure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Ota, Ogun.

Uga said that 45 persons also sustained various degrees of injuries from the crashes.

The sector commander said that most of the accidents were caused by excessive speed, dangerous driving, night travel and tyre bursts, among others.

“We are appealing to motorists to adhere to traffic rules and regulations to prevent unnecessary loss of life, especially during this rainy season.

“In addition, they should exercise patience and reduce their speed to reduce disaster on our highway,” he said.

The sector commander said that the special patrol just concluded also helped to minimise road crashes because the corps was able to check excesses of motorists.

He said that FRSC would continue to sustain the special patrol, especially on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, and other parts of the state to ensure that lives are safe on the road.
