Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said Nigeria would rise again if the church started to preach the values of hard work.
Osinbajo lamented that the Nigerian church had shifted its focus from preaching hard work to prosperity.
He spoke while delivering a lecture at the 68th Anniversary and 58th Annual Convention of The Gospel Faith Mission International, GOFAMINT, at the weekend.
According to Osinbajo: “For too long, our churches have been caught up in the pursuit of personal prosperity and material wealth, neglecting the true calling of the gospel to promote peace, unity, and the holistic development of our society.
“If we truly want to see Nigeria rise again and fulfil its immense potential, the church must return to its roots, preaching the values of hard work, compassion, and service to the community.
“It is only through this shift in focus that we can inspire our people to become agents of positive change, rather than mere consumers of the prosperity gospel.”
Barring any last-minute change, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun of the Supreme Court is set to emerge as the next chief justice of Nigeria (CJN).
Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun from Lagos State, South West Nigeria is set to be appointed as the new Supreme Court Chief Justice.
If she assumes the office, Kekere-Ekun would become the second female justice in Nigeria to hold the exalted position after Mariam Aloma Mukhtar, who was CJN between July 2012 and November 2014, spending 28 months in office.
The current occupant of the office, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who assumed office on June 27, 2022, will formally bow out on Thursday, August 22, 2024, after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 years.
As the most senior justice of the Supreme Court after Ariwoola, Justice Kekere-Ekun is favoured to clinch the position.
Tragedy struck at a workplace in Lagos when a 25-year-old contract worker, whose identity remains undisclosed, fatally jumped into a scorching iron melting pot.
Confirming the incident on Sunday to NAN, Lagos State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, revealed that the company’s safety officer reported the incident to the Sagamu Road Police Division on August 3, at approximately 6:00 p.m.
Hundeyin said the company is located in the Industrial Scheme of Odogunyan in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
According to the police spokesperson, the company’s safety officer said that the deceased, assigned to the AOD Section, ran towards the iron melting pot, which is restricted during operation, at about 3:15 p.m. on the same day.
Despite efforts by his colleagues to stop him, he jumped into the pot, resulting in his body being completely melted.
Hundeyin, who said that police detectives visited the scene, and that the deceased’s family has been informed, noted that investigation is ongoing.
The police spokesperson said, “He jumped into it and all efforts made by his colleagues to stop him proved abortive, while his body was completely melted.
“Detectives from the station visited the scene of the crime. The family of the deceased has since been contacted, while investigation is ongoing.”

At about 10am on Friday morning, 9th August 2024, the Arugba was seen coming out of the sacred house of Ọṣun (as it was since the ancient time). The Arugba is a maiden and tradition demands her to be virgin and clean in spirit.
She’s to bear the Igbá on her head in procession to the river [Ọṣun altar] where ritual items would be offered for blessings and in thanksgiving.

Today in continuation of the procession, a lot of river goddess believers and some other traditionalists storm Osun Osogbo river to continue the rituals usually done in August every year.
Among the traditionalists, there were foreign enthusiasts who trooped in number to celebrate the famous festival.
The Ooni of Ife and Co- Chairman, National Council Of Traditional Rulers Of Nigeria(NCTRN) Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, on Friday played host to traditional rulers of Yoruba Okun origin in Kogi and Kwara states, North Central Nigeria at the ancient Ile Oodua Palace, Ile-Ife.
Led by the Obaro of Kabba, Oba Dele Owoniyi, the monarch paid the august visit to present the new Elulu of Mopa, Oba (Dr.) Muyiwa Ibeun who recently ascended the throne of his ancestors to the Arole Oduduwa.
In his opening address, the Obaro of Kabba, Oba Dele Owoniyi described Ile-Ife as the undisputed home of all Yoruba people particularly those of Okun origin, adding that Ooni Ogunwusi has done so well in giving all descendants of Oduduwa an enviable identity and real sense of belonging anywhere in the world.
“Kabiyesi, we have a lot of work to do for our people with regards to where we found ourselves in modern Nigeria. There are real issues of development deficit which I am sure we can overcome with your might and influence.
“Please be assured that our loyalty to the ancient throne of Oduduwa is never in doubt.” The Obaro of Kabba noted.
Addressing the gathering, the Elulu of Mopa, Oba Muyiwa Ibeun thanked the Ooni for his love and support which he said preceded his emergence as a monarch.
“This is homecoming for me and my colleagues here, we are here to thank Your Imperial Majesty as well as commending you for dignifying the prestigious traditional institution.” The Elulu said.
In the same vein, the Elejuku of Ejuku (Kogi State), explained that most children of Oduduwa of Okun origin are at great disadvantage as they are often regarded as second or third Yoruba.
“Kabiyesi Ooni, we are tired of being referred to as lesser Yoruba because of our location, those who demarcated us in those days did not consult us and that is why they did not factor in our peculiarities.
“We want you to use your connection and position to return us home and reunite us with our kinsmen. We are your children and we cannot afford to be regarded as lesser descendants of Oduduwa.” The monarch noted.
The stance was buttressed by the Olusin of Isin (Kwara State), Oba Solomon Oloyede who added that the Ooni must not relent in ensuring that all descendants of Oduduwa are in perfect condition at all times.
Responding to the visiting monarchs and their subjects, Ooni Ogunwusi who is the Chairman, Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council (SNTRC) explained that the most important thing is for Okun Yorubas to know and note that they are well appreciated by their kinsmen in the western part of the country.
“You are not lesser, second or third Yorubas. You are true descendants of Oduduwa with history of hard work and noble background which I am sure you carry with pride. We shall work together for development, peace and tranquility of our respective domains.” The Ooni said.
In a meeting with a delegation of House of Representatives members, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has issued a stern warning to the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu.
Obasanjo cautioned the federal government that failure to address the demands of Nigerian youths, who have been staging nationwide protests, could have dire consequences. The former president expressed concerns over the youths’ “frustration, desperation, anger, and unemployment.”
“You are what you are today because you’re a Nigerian; I’m what I am also because I’m a Nigerian. So why should they be Nigerians and be languishing in poverty? They make demands and we’re not listening to them. Many of them are frustrated, desperate, angry and unemployed. What do we expect?,” Obasanjo said.
The meeting, which took place in Obasanjo’s residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was attended by a delegation led by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere and included other lawmakers such as Hon. Abdulmalik Danga, Hon. Midala Malami, Hon. Matthew Nwogu, Hon. Peter Aniekwe, and Hon. Kama Nkemkama.
During the discussion, Obasanjo emphasized the need for a change in mentality among those in governance, stressing that Nigeria’s progress depends on its ability to address the youths’ demands.
The meeting also touched on a proposed bill seeking a single six-year term for the presidency, with Obasanjo cautioning that the success of such a system would depend on the “mentality” of those in power.
“If you have a system you can trust; you have an INEC you can trust, then it will not matter the number of years,” Obasanjo said, alluding to the importance of electoral integrity.
This meeting comes at a critical juncture, as the country grapples with nationwide protests driven by the youths’ demands for better governance, economic opportunities, and an end to corruption.
President Bola Tinubu’s government has abruptly cancelled the sale of subsidized 50-kilogramme bags of rice to civil servants for N40,000 each.
The withdrawal was announced in a circular on August 2, just a day after the offer was made, and coincides with the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests across the country.
The Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, which made the initial announcement, did not provide any reason for the cancellation.
The move has raised questions about the government’s intentions and its response to the protests, which have called for improved governance and economic relief.
Her Excellency, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde, has called for the enhancement of nursing mothers’ rights and the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding in the state, emphasizing its numerous benefits for mothers and babies.
She said this, on Thursday at an event organized by her office to commemorate the 2024 World Breastfeeding Week in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
“We must create a society where nursing mothers are supported and empowered to breastfeed their babies without fear of stigma or discrimination,” Mrs. Makinde said.
She stressed that breastfeeding reduces the risk of infant mortality, promotes bonding between mothers and their children, and enhances the cognitive development of babies.
“Breast milk is the best gift we can give our children, and we must do everything possible to promote and support breastfeeding,” she added.Mrs. Makinde also advocated for the creation of a conducive environment for nursing mothers to breastfeed their babies, including the establishment of crèches and breastfeeding rooms in public places.“We need to make our public spaces friendly to nursing mothers, so they can feel comfortable and confident breastfeeding their babies,” she said.
Also speaking, Dr Khadeejah Alarape, Director of Nutrition, Oyo Primary Health Care Board enlightened the nursing mothers on the need to eat good food.She assured that the state government would continue to support initiatives that promote breastfeeding and improve maternal and child health.
The event featured breastfeeding awareness walk with participants including healthcare professionals, nursing mothers, and stakeholders in the health sector.Nursing Mothers present were given food stuffs and cash courtesy of the Wife of the Governor.
A yet to be identified person was seen between battling for life as fire broke out at a Mobil fuel station near Airport Hotel on Obafemi Awolowo Way in Ikeja, Lagos State, today, causing chaos and destruction.
One person was also seen severely burnt by fire in a viral video circulated across social media.
The incident occurred around 10:49 a.m. during a peak period of fuel sales, and emergency services, including ambulances, have been deployed to the scene to attend to victims and contain the situation.
Officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service are currently at the scene, but the cause of the fire outbreak is still unknown.
