Lekbad Column: Lanrewaju Adepoju, extolling the temerity of a poetic czar

Comrade Lekan Badmus is a freelancer, public opinion analyst and a columnist with Oduduwa News.

Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister once composed a song that will continue to resonate and reverberate till eternity. He sang; “… I am black and proud, I am proud of my colour, whoever that is not proud of his colour, is not fit to live.”… .Just as the song refuses to diffuse into the thin air over time and in spite of the multi-various, non-censored and morally bankrupt songs currently trending, Barrister himself lives on. He was a philosopher.

The above referenced song has a direct bearing on our existence as a race. A race is defined by its culture because culture is a way of life. By way of academics, culture is all- encompassing. Cloth, religion, language, food, to mention but a few. All these are cultural heritage which need to be preserved for the purpose of transmuting it from generations to generations. Culture is identity. As such, any tribe that fails to promote its’ heritage would, in no distant time, go into extinction.

Lanrewaju Adepoju was a stylist whose works has dual purposes. One is to promote Yoruba culture while the second is criticism. Alhaji Lanrewaju Adepoju is in the class of Fela Anikulapo and Bob Marley with reference to activism. He was a torn in the flesh of tyrants and despots. He never cared a hoot to lambast the promoters of social injustice. Lanrewaju Adepoju is an ardent believer in egalitarianism and social welfarism. These he had always preached with fervour despite serial victimization and detention.

In the same vein, he could be likened to Professors Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe in literary world and poetic effusions. He is a Pan-Africanist who was known for bitter truth, constructive criticism of government, fierce, brave and one who was never timid to expose the personalities behind any obvious evil. Alhaji does not believe in wrapping illegality with any garb of diplomacy.

Is there any oriki (panegyric) of a town he knew not ! I doubt that. The Akufo-born poet is a well-researched exponent, an institution and a son of the soil who is ever proud of his ancestry.

Lanrewaju though never had formal education but he did not succumb to fate.Through a dint of hardwork and determination, he tutored himself using ABD olowe poetic book of the olden days. This later helped in no small mean to enrich his works of art.

And because he refused to remain a stark illiterate, he rose to become a proof-reader in a newspaper organization called ‘People’s Star Press Limited’, founded by Ladoke Akintola. He also played other parts in that newspaper organisation which shaped him until he became a broadcaster in 70s, anchoring a programme called ‘Ijinji Akewi,’. His other notable programmes were Gbele gbo and Tiwa n tiwa.

Poetry is not a business of or for fools. It is for the wise, the brainy and the intelligent. This is a colossus who spends a lot of time searching for deep but beautiful words and proverbs to describe situations. The output of his deep imagination and poetic licence is what we get from his rich Ewi metaphysical poetry. The Are Alasa of Ibadanland deserves a double UN honour as Nobel laureate in the field of poetry and social justice in the area of constructive confrontation of maladministration.

Lanrewaju Adepoju may have retired due to aging but his works still remain the voice of oppressors.

Although, he has won so many accolades and awards but there is nothing bad if the Yoruba- speaking states accord him a befitting honour while still alive. Anything contrary to this is pointer to the fact that the price of honesty and promotion of culture is neglect.

Eniyan o suwon leeyan…ijo a ba ku, laa dere. Naming any edifice after a the demise of a genius is not as good as celebrating him while alive. Such a step is a motivation.

Oyo Govt. Seals Premier Hotel, Event Centre, Over 80 Shops for Violation of Sanitation Laws

The Oyo State Government has sealed the indigenous premier Hotel situated at Mokola hill and an event centre located at Eleyele, for violating the environmental sanitation laws of the state.

The Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Abiodun Oni who led the enforcement team alongside the Coordinating Director of the Ministry, Mr. Rogba Adedigba, Director Environmental Health Services, the Environmental Task Force, Amotekun Corps and Environmental Health Officers, among others during the week reiterated that the need to seal up these facilities became necessary so as to put an end to environmental nuisance in the state.

The Commissioner who was appalled with the attitude of the management of Premier Hotel for accumulating heaps of wastes within their premises, wondered why the management failed to co-operate with the designated authorised waste collector, despite the 7-days ultimatum given to them to evacuate their wastes.

“It is disheartening that despite efforts of this administration to provide an enabling and sustainable environment to residents, people still go ahead violating the environmental laws of the state whereas a filthy environment poses threats to individual’s lives in the state. When sickness comes, it knows no boundaries”, the Commissioner added.

In the same development, over 80 shops were sealed at Sango market for non-compliance of environmental sanitation laws which include indiscriminate dumping of wastes on the road median, accommodating a filthy drainage at the frontage of their shops and non-compliance with the authorised waste collector while also the event centre was sealed for patronizing illegal waste collector.

Mr. Oni who further emphasized that the enforcement will continue to take place lest people understand the need to take care of our environment

“As citizens, proper waste disposal is a way of exercising their responsibilities as well as giving concrete support to the government as such, putting an end to the scourge of filthy environment” The Commissioner added.

Oyo Govt To Create Enabling Environment For Kunle Afolayan’s Mega Film Village In Oke-Ogun

The Oyo State government on Monday said adequate enabling environment would be provided for the mega Film Village established by the popular film producer and actor, Kunle Afolayan at Igbojaye in Itesiwaju local government.

The film village, which is one of its kind in Africa would lend structural capacity to the film industry and provide relaxation and other facilities for tourists when completed.

The State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun stated on Tuesday at his office in Ibadan that every means within the capacity of the State government would be made available for the Film Village to be the best tourist destination in Africa.

Olatubosun said apart from the late Hubert Ogunde and Adeyemi Afolayan, the father of Kunle Afolayan, no theater practitioner has put so much efforts into theater to the extent of establishing a Film Village till the latter did at Igbojaye.

He went further to say that the State was poised to benefit immensely from the project, as many youths would be employed in construction of the village and in the tourism sector of the project.

He maintained that the project was part of other private ventures that have seen opportunities in the landscape, cheap human capital resources, security of lives and properties as well as provision of network of roads round the State and were taking better advantage of the situation.

“You can see that the works of the present administration in the State is yielding good results, we appreciate Mr Kunle Afolayan for this bold step to establish the Mega Film Village in Oyo State and we are conscious of the fact that the project has gulped millions of naira, the present administration under the able leadership of Engr. Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State will continue to direct all efforts towards creating enabling environment for such ventures to spring up and be sustained in the State.

“The creation of Amotekun to complement the regular security forces in Oyo State has seen to eradication of vices and crimes, while people are now bringing their businesses to Oyo State, where nature has blessed them with arable land, desirable natural ambiance and human capital to develop their businesses.”

Mr. Kunle Afolayan who spoke with journalists at Igbojaye during the weekend said the Film Village was envisioned to create tourists attractions in the area of resorts with mountain hiking, recreation and opportunity for film makers to have readymade structures to make good films.

He said his Film Institute has started training 300,000 students on Film Studies in three years, through an agreement he had with MasterCard Foundation.

He added that 40% of the 300,000 students will be from low-income earning homes and the gesture will contribute to the growth of the film industry.

“I think this is going to create a big relief for the generations to come, when we want to shoot films, we always go look for people’s houses, begging them and you do not have control, but with this kind of place, we can have the confidence to commence shooting at our convenient time, we can easily decide on our own about the weather and other factors, but you cannot do that if you are renting the place or if you are tied to a time from the house owner.

“We came here in November for a suitable location for a film, but on getting here, I thought about it and I felt this is just a beautiful place, if you are coming from Ibadan, get to Iseyin, leaving Iseyin and on your way here, you will hardly see mountains, rocks and valleys like you see here, when you come to Okaka till you get to Otu, you won’t find those natural ambiance, but from Igbojaye to Komu-Baba Ode, the places are surrounded with all these natural gifts that people are not taking advantage of.

“There are lot of well known tourists destinations around the world that, as a matter of fact, do not have half of what we have here or because of how they are positioned, how they are structured and a lot of government supports, they get loans and people fly there from all over the world.

“That is what we are trying to create here too, for people from Lagos, people from Abuja and other areas will come down here, you do not have to go to Obudu again if you want natural ambiance, where you are at peace with yourself, that is the bigger picture, it is not just going to be a film studio, it is also going to be a recreation center, a resort with mountain hiking, that is what we are going to sell.”

He however lamented low availability of workforce at the location as according to him, many youths in Itesiwaju local government have relocated to Lagos and other cities, forcing him to go as far as Ibadan to hire work hands.
