COVID-19: FG says resumption of schools by Jan. 18 no longer feasible

The previously announced resumption date by the ministry of education which is January 18, 2020 have been said to be no longer feasible.

The Minster for education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu have said considering the surge in number of infected persons with COVID-19, the previously announced date might no longer be feasible.

The Honorable Minister of Education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu gave the hint on Monday in Abuja at the joint national briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19.
The PTF had in December 2020 asked schools in the country to remain closed until January 18, 2021.

When we decided on that date, it was just a target towards what we are working on.
Of course we are keeping it in view and looking at what is happening in the society and then it is supposed to be subject to constant review.
Even today at the PTF meeting, we looked at the rising figures and thought we should probably take another look at it. On the January 18, 2021 date for school resumption, we are reviewing it’ he said.

The minister added that the issue was considered at the PTF meeting held on Monday and that the ministry would continue discussions on it today, Tuesday, 12 January 2021-

Lagos CBD intensifies sensitization against spread of COVID-19

The Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Central Business Districts has intensified the sensitisation of stakeholders operating with the Lagos Island Business Districts about the emergence of the second wave of COVID-19 in the State.

Speaking at different sensitisation meetings with representatives of CDC/CDA, NURTW and Market Associations operating within the Lagos Island Business District over the weekend, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Central Business Districts, Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde, called on the leadership of the unions to ensure total compliance with the health guidelines issued by the State Government to curb the spread of the second wave of COVID-19.

Oyerinde said the sensitisation meetings became necessary following the observed increase in the number of those affected due to the general laxity, false sense of security, non-adherence to safety guidelines by citizens, re-opening of schools, large religious congregations, social gatherings and entertainment, among others as well as the large volume of visitors coming into the Lagos Island business district daily.

The Special Adviser called for lifestyle adjustments by adhering strictly to all COVID-19 protocols in order to flatten the curve of the global pandemic.

He urged the leadership of the associations to prevail on their members to adhere strictly to all safety protocols including proper and regular use of face masks, adhering to physical distancing guidelines and avoiding mass gatherings.

While imploring the leadership of transport unions within the Lagos Island Business District to join the fight against the spread of the disease by always checking the temperature of passengers, Oyerinde advised them to ensure that physical distancing protocols relating to the number of passengers allowed in their commercial vehicles are strictly observed.

He said “We noted that as the economy reopens for business and the influx of a large number of visitors coming to the business district daily, there is the need to continually enlighten traders, business owners and visitors against violating COVID-19 protocols as well as avoiding traffic and environmental laws infringement. Most traders are beginning to lose consciousness of the need to obey health guidelines against the spread of the coronavirus pandemic”.

“We have printed enlightenment materials to further enlighten visitors and traders within the CBD zone and our enlightenment and advocacy team will regularly visit markets and streets, especially Balogun, UBA/Tinubu, Ereko/Martins, Alli Balogun, Nnamdi Azikiwe streets, outer and inner Marina and Idumota axis to ensure that everyone coming to the Island on a daily basis for business and private visits are sensitised on the need to obey the COVID-19 protocols as well as keeping the business district safe and clean”, Oyerinde added.

Urging Lagosians to be safety conscious as they come to the Lagos Island business district to engage in business transactions, the Special Adviser said that CBD enforcement unit and other government agencies are ready to ensure that health, traffic, environmental and other security challenges associated with the high influx of shoppers and traders into the Island are curtailed and well managed.

He, however, warned street traders using the walkways and kerbs to display their goods as well as motorists parking on bridges to desist from the practice as the State will continue to impound vehicles parked and goods displayed on walkways and kerbs.

AMOTEKUN: Oyo Govt kicks against weaponisation of ethnicity to destroy good initiative

Those pushing the narrative still think demonising AMOTEKUN will score for them political points. In their fancy, they are already drawing a link between the Amotekun and the fabled SARS which some youths rose against last year. They are wrong and totally miscalculating because it is a faulty narrative.

Weaponising ethnicity with a view to destroying AMOTEKUN will meet with a solid brickwall and it will, also, not work.
And because they failed in their bid to stop the launch of AMOTEKUN, they have now resorted to twisting facts and creating their own bubble of alternative and fictional reality. They will fail again as they failed before.
Placed side by side, facts will always trump fiction, lies and incitement.

That AMOTEKUN strategically launched six counter-banditry, counter-kidnapping and counter-terrorism operations in four local governments, simultaneously, on Saturday, deserves credit.
Yet, more deserving of credit is the inclusive nature of the rainbow coalition that went after the criminals.
It comprised Amotekun, Vigilantes, Hunters and Miyetti Allah Vigilante.
In fact, not just members of Miyetti Allah, but some Fulani were part of the operations, with the Seriki being fully briefed about the operations.

Some lives were lost; some sustained injuries. Those killed in the process were criminals and not herdsmen.
And, the coalition, led by men of AMOTEKUN, succeeded in sending a very clear message to criminals terrorising the people: that enough is enough.
But strange and stranger narratives are being woven round AMOTEKUN’s noble effort to rid the thick forests of Ibarapa East, Ibarapa Central and Ibarapa North, as well as Iwajowa Local Government Areas, of kidnappers and bandits.
Some of the victims of the criminals have been Fulani as well as Yoruba and other tribes.
Which explains why AMOTEKUN worked in concert with Miyetti Allah and Fulani supporters who have been victims of kidnapping.

Those who are struggling to sell the lie that AMOTEKUN
killed Fulani are doing so with the wicked intent of creating ethnic tensions. They will fail.
Meanwhile, arrests were made, pieces of useful information are being extracted, and the criminals have been handed over to the Police.
One of the strange and contradictory deductions is that the same media warriors and politicians condemning insecurity in Oyo State, are the same Vuvuzelas and mouth organs being used to misrepresent, misinform and churn out false narratives about the exploits of AMOTEKUN.

If the intention is to dampen the morale of corps members, it will fail. If the plot is to paint Oyo State or parts of Yorubaland as ungovernable, they will equally fail.
There are gaps being filled in the bid to make AMOTEKUN more responsive and professional and His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, has assured of that.
Whereas there is a cogent and verifiable consensus that stereotyping, criminalising and profiling members of any ethnic group do not help matters, one is then left to wonder why it is now fashionable for some enemies of the state to empathize with criminals by deploying ethnicity? Why are some people weaponising ethnicity against AMOTEKUN’s onslaught in it’s war on criminals? Do they want to destroy it? They will fail.

This is Yorubaland and those toying with the cobra of banditry and criminality should look up to other areas of Nigeria that have become playing fields for bandits. It is this same type of indulgent narrative, of twisting facts and misinforming people of the real dangers these criminals represent, that has made bandits, criminals and terrorists to take over some parts of the country; where some governors have got no other option than to negotiate with bandits and criminals.

We are daily being served chilling and horrific tales of criminals and bandits who now hold state governments to ransom and engage in profitable negotiated settlements of crimes and criminality.

Governor Makinde will not tolerate that. His principal responsibility is the welfare and protection of lives and properties of all the indigenes and residents of Oyo State, irrespective of politico-religious and ethnic background.

The people pushing false narratives simply want to distract Governor Makinde.
But the Governor remains resolute and focussed, deploying the Blue Ocean approach to governance, an approach that has seen him devise creative means of doing projects at a time of cash crunch; he received commendation for his handling of Covid-19 and #EndSARS protests; as well as his novel welfare package for workers and pensioners in Oyo State.

This is our Oyo State and we must not allow enemies of the state to succeed. This is Yorubaland and criminals should not be allowed to do harm to our people.
Let us join hands to secure our dear Oyo State and Yorubaland.

JUST IN: Osun flags off FG 774,000 Special Public Works

The Governor of the State of Osun, Adegboyega Oyetola, has said that the administration is resolute in its efforts to equip young people to be competent contributors to the growth and development of the State.

The governor said the administration woud not relent in its efforts to continue to seek creative ways of providing employment for the people, particularly the unemployed youths.

The governor said these at the flag off of the Federal Government Extended Special Public Works Programme (774,000 Jobs) at the Multi-purpose Hall of the Local Government Service Commission, State Secretariat, Abere, Osogbo.

Governor Oyetola lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his Administration’s commitment and keen interest in youth empowerment, saying the initiative was in line with Osun’s Development Agenda aimed at guaranteeing and securing a better future for the teeming youths in the State.

Oyetola who was represented by his Deputy, Mr. Benedict Alabi, said the Administration has developed workable modalities named “Osun Youth Policy” that articulates government’s vision, objectives and plans in driving its focused agenda for the young people.

“In many ways, this programme aligns with our Administration’s agenda of equipping our young people to be competent contributors to the growth and development of our State.

“You will recall that only recently, we codified a comprehensive Youth Policy that articulates our vision, objectives and plans in driving our focused agenda for our young people.

“All our existing programmes, including the Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme (OYES), Post-COVID 19 Recovery Plan, are already being recaliberated for employment generation and better service delivery.

“We shall not relent in our efforts to continue to seek creative ways of providing employment for our youths and our people”, Oyetola added.

The governor urged the beneficiaries of the programme to justify the confidence reposed in them by using the opportunity provided by the government to give their best in the service of the nation and the State.

He said “The programme, though a short-term response to the rising spate of unemployment in our country, deserves to be commended for its ambitious coverage and transparent recruitment process.

“With 1,000 beneficiaries drawn from each of the 774 local governments in the country, this programme further mobilises our young people to contribute to societal development while also earning a modest income within the space of three months, in the first instance.

“Again, this programme communicates the readiness of Mr. President to address the urgent need to provide economic empowerment for our teeming youth population,” Oyetola added.

In his remarks, Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for being committed to the welfare and well-being of the citizens.

Aregbesola who was represented by former Commissioner for Agriculture, Adekunle Ige, described the Federal Government’s initiative as one that would fastrack the quest to ensure quick recovery of the nation’s economy which was hitherto lost to the adverse socioeconomic effects of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Acting Director General, National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Mallam Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo, applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for the noble intent that gave birth to the national employment scheme aimed to take the citizens out of the scourge of poverty and unemployment.

Fikpo who was represented by his Deputy, Mallam Ismail Yekini, reassured the capacity of the NDE to successfully execute the programme and justify the confidence reposed in it by the Federal Government.

“This is a significant scheme designed to combat mass unemployment rate and alleviate poverty in our dear country. With this programme, the scourge of poverty and joblessness will be drastically reduced.

“We commend President Buhari for the confidence he has in NDE to implement the programme as we assure him of our capacity to deliver as we are conscious of Mr. President’s commitment to use the scheme to mitigate the adverse effects of the global Coronavirus pandemic”, he added.

Commissioner for Human Resources and Capacity Building, Alhaja Lateefah Giwa, expressed profound gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Adegboyega Oyetola for prosecuting and promoting policies and programmes aimed at eradicating poverty, hunger, unemployment and other societal vices.

Alhaja Giwa also extolled the avowed commitment of the governments to turn around the socioeconomic fortunes of the people, particularly the young people who are the most energetic and proactive segment of the population.

She expressed confidence in the ability of the programme to alleviate poverty, idleness, hunger and crime rate as many of the participants would be equipped with necessary skills and resources to be self-employed and self-reliant.

Akire Ile of Ikire Ile, Oba Abdu-Azeez Olukojo Ilufemiloye, commended the Administration of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola for rebranding the State as seen in the infrastructural development and socioeconomic growth manifesting in the State.

The monarch added: “Oyetola is a wonderful leader. Despite the paucity of funds, he is still committed to infrastructural development. He is a good manager of resources.

“I want the people of Osun to continue to support him in his avowed commitment to stimulate our economy and provide an enabling environment for all to thrive in order to ensure all-round growth and development of the State”

COVID-19: Oyo Govt approves 30 testing centres, warns private healthcare against managing patients

Owners of private health facilities in Oyo State have been warned against managing COVID-19 cases in their facilities, as this has been linked with the rising cases of the infection in the state.

The Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and the state’s COVID-19 Technical Task Force, on Saturday, gave this warning, noting that there are 30 approved Testing Centres including the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, for the purpose of testing samples.

It added that those suspected to have symptoms of coronavirus infection should be referred to these centres for testing and that testing for symptomatic or suspected cases is free.

A statement by Mr. Taiwo Adisa, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, indicated that the chairman of the state’s COVID-19 Technical Task Force, Professor Temitope Alonge, gave this warning in a memo addressed to Chief Executive Officers, Chief Operating Officers and Managers of private health facilities in the state.

Alonge, the statement noted, appealed to the health workers to comply strictly with the advisory, reiterating that the Oyo State Government could not afford any depletion in the healthcare workforce due to ill health arising from coronavirus infection.

The statement read in part: “The spread of the new wave of the coronavirus infection in Oyo State is increasing and the reports reaching the Emergency Operations Centre and the Technical Task Force is that some of the people infected had been managed for various ailments in some private health facilities.

“In some cases, the private health facilities fail to notify the EOC about suspected cases that would have had their samples taken by the EOC at the invitation of the private health facilities. Sampling of such cases by the EOC has been the established protocol and it is still in place.

“However, repeated breach of this protocol is worrisome and I wish to remind all health care providers that we are not immune to this infection and admitting suspected cases in private health facilities is unacceptable.

“No private health facility in Oyo State has been licensed to manage COVID-19 patients. Strict adherence to the laid down infection prevention and control measures will be enforced by the EOC at any private health facility. I wish to inform you that there are reports of an increase in the number of healthcare workers who have contracted coronavirus infection at various healthcare facilities.”

The Task Force indicated that managements of all public and private health care facilities in the state should be aware that “there are thirty (30) testing centres dotted all over Oyo State, including the UCH, Ibadan, and that patients suspected to have symptoms of coronavirus infection should be referred to these centres for testing.

“Please note that testing for symptomatic or suspected cases is free.

“There are five testing centres in Ibadan, namely; Alakia PHC (Lagelu LGA); Health is Wealth (Ibadan North LGA); General Hospital, Apata (Ibadan South West LGA); Ologuneru PHC (Ido LGA); and the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

“I wish to appeal to all for strict compliance with this advisory and to reiterate that the Oyo State Government can not afford any depletion in the healthcare workforce due to ill health arising from coronavirus infection.

“If you see something, say something, and if you know something, please speak up,” the statement concluded.

JUST IN: Poly Ibadan staff embark on indefinite strike action

ODUDUWA NEWS has just gathered that staff members of Polytechnic Ibadan have embarked on strike action over non implementation of minimum wage.

The resolution to embark on strike action was reached at the meeting held by joint action committee of academic and non academic staff.

The Chairman of SSANIP, Abiodun Abegunde in his opening remarks commended the workers for their steadfastness so far and noted that the issue must be fought to a logical conclusion. He noted that different efforts have been employed to resolve the impasse to no avail. He noted that the wage structure being demanded by the Unions is even lower than that being enjoyed by sister institutions in other states.

The Chairman of NASU, in his submission, noted that the Governing Council itself was incapacitated by the overreaching activities of the Consultant. He wondered why the management was willing to follow a directive from the NBTE to lock down the school, but unwilling to implement the wage structure approved by the same NBTE

The representative of academic staff, Nurudeen Akinade noted that the activities of the consultant is a clear negation of the edict setting up the institution and asked that such be rejected outrightly. He noted that no form of sabotage would prevent the achievements of the demands.

Workers who spoke at the meeting agreed that they had endured enough and it seemed the state government had taken their patience as cowardice.

A motion for a strike action was thereby moved and seconded. It was emphasized that the strike was total and comprehensive, and no worker is exempted as essential services, till the government accedes to the demands.
