Ogun Police Confirms Arrest of Notorious Suspected Land Grabbers

Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested three suspected land grabbers at the Itusokun Quarters in the Odogbolu area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Oyeyemi said the suspects, Wasiu Adenuga, Michael John and Moruf Alaba, were arrested following a report lodged at the Odogbolu Divisional Police Headquarters by one Kemi Olukoya.

He added that Olukoya reported that while she was on her new site supervising construction workers, a group of eight men invaded the place, started shooting indiscriminately and chased away the workers.

The PPRO said, “She (Olukoya) stated further that the hoodlums also snatched at gunpoint her bag containing the sum of N500,000 and her telephones valued at N40,000.

“Upon the report, the DPO, Odogbolu Division, SP Adeniyi Awokunle, mobilised his men and moved to the scene, and on getting there, the hoodlums were seen escaping through the nearby bush, but they were chased after and one of them, Wasiu Adenuga, was apprehended.

“Further combing of the bush led to the arrest of two others namely: Michael John and Moruf Alaba, while three Bajaj motorcycles that they used for the operation were also impounded.

“The victim identified the three of them as members of the gang that attacked her and her workers.”

The PPRO added that the Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation.

Oyeyemi said Ajogun also directed that the remaining members of the gang be hunted and brought to justice.

Sickle Cell Disorder, Not A Death Sentence – University Don

The Head, Department of Medicine at the General Hospital, Ijede, Dr. Ogo-Oluwa Adeyemi, has asserted that Sickle Cell Disorder is not a death sentence as those diagnosed with sickle cell disease have the tendency of living longer than expected due to improvement in medical and personal care.

Dr. Adeyemi, who disclosed this at an event organised by the hospital to mark the year 2021 World Sickle Cell Day at the facility, maintained that if people with the disorder receive good treatment, erase their fears, are adequately informed and able to manage crisis effectively, the probability of attaining the age of 80 years or more is very possible.

The HoD described Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD) as a genetic abnormality that causes dysfunction in oxygen-carrying capacity of the red blood cells and reduces the lifespan of the blood, stressing that “Sickle cell disorder is caused because the inherited genes, one each from the two parents are defective, resulting in the shortage of healthy red blood cells and blockage of blood flow”.

Crisis, according to Adeyemi, can start from infancy and the earliest manifestation for most children is the hand and foot syndrome, noting that those who live in rural areas or do not receive adequate treatment have tropical splenomegaly syndrome (the enlargement of the spleen and liver) making them have very big abdomen, looking malnourished, experiencing frequent pain crisis, irritability, anaemia and stunted growth, among others.

He averred that people living with sickle cell disorder are prone to other diseases like hypertension and diabetes, adding that some of them may also end up being infected with HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and a few other communicable diseases because of their frequent exposure to blood transfusion.

Adeyemi revealed that one out of four Nigerians has a sickle cell trait, adding that the efforts to curtail the spread of the disease by reducing the birth of children with the disorder are being undermined by brain drain, quackery, substandard laboratories, fake reagents, moral and ethical dilemma, wrong laboratory diagnosis and faulty machines among others.

He, however, noted that early diagnosis and comprehensive health check through an enhanced system goes a long way in helping to determine the genotype of newborns so that prompt healthcare management, treatment and monitoring will commence in earnest in order to prevent frequent crisis and early death among sufferers.

While declaring that everybody has a part to play in ensuring a decline in the number of children born with sickle cell disorder, Adeyemi charged those living with the disorder, their parents and caregivers to erase their fears, get informed and manage their crisis adequately to live a normal and fruitful life as everyone else in society.

Ayinla Omowura Calls One Of His For A Tete-A-Tete ~ By Festus Adedayo

Last Tuesday morning, lovers of the music of late ace Yoruba Apala musician, Ayinla Omowura, a.k.a Hadji Costly, Egunmogaji, lost one of the connoisseurs of that traditional music. Waheed Ganiyu was my friend, with whom I shared intellectual conversations on Omowura.

He knew Omowura like the back of his hands, though like me, he never met the Abeokuta, capital of Ogun State-born bohemian musician who was killed 41 years ago in a beer parlour tiff. Ask him what vinyl volume a particular track of the musician could be found, he would tell you off hand, with clinical precision. As a testament to his depth, knowledge and how he lent immeasurable hand in the writing of the book, I showered huge encomiums on Waheed in the book.

But for him, I most probably would not have written the biography of Omowura. He rummaged through information and located me sometime in 2015, clutching earlier pieces I had done in newspapers about Hadji Costly. With that characteristic smile of his, he demanded that I wrote a book on the musician. He would inundate me with calls and pleadings, asking that I should wake up from my procrastination. More out of the need to satisfy him, work began on the book in 2018. You could see the fire of enthusiasm on his face as researches turned up tomes of information about Omowura. He was ever ready to accompany me on the several interview trips I embarked on to Abeokuta and Lagos to talk to sources about the musician.

In February this year, Waheed took ill and we all thought he was going to pull through in matter of weeks. Some weeks ago, he called that his health was deteriorating. Ever not ready to burden anyone with his load, he hid details of his existential challenges from his friends. Only for that jarring news of his passage to hit the airwaves last week.

Lovers of Omowura’s music worldwide should not allow Waheed’s only child, Ganiyu Abdulateef Oluwapamilerinayo, a student of Oriwu Junior Model College, Igbogbo, Ikorodu to suffer the absence of his father. Many thanks to Azeez Temitope, a friend of his who offered his shoulders for Waheed to lean on in his last moments. May Allah repose his soul.

External Forces Behind Secessionist Agitations in Nigeria – Fayemi

Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi has emphasized the need for members of the political class and non-state actors to practise the 1993 June 12 ethos where sectional, sectarian and partisan interests were set aside in the overall interest of the country.

He said such a unity of purpose and positive disposition to the wellbeing of the country were needed in dealing with current agitation for secession.

Dr Fayemi said, there is hardly any doubt that there were calculated plans by some external forces in collaboration with domestic conspirators to dismember Nigeria and cause untold humanitarian crisis.

The Governor explained that the rising tide of agitations for secession in some parts of the country can be curtailed when leaders are challenged to promote issues that unite the nation through fairness, equity, and justice rather than issues of division.

Dr Fayemi stated this in Ado- Ekiti on Friday at a colloquium held in commemoration of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election with theme: “June12: Securing the Freedom of Democracy”

The colloquium which was chaired by the National Chairman of Afenifere Renewal Group, Hon Wale Osun, had veteran journalist, Dare Babrinsa, a members of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon Lateef Akanle and Chairperson, Ado Local Government, Mrs Omotunde Fajuyi as panelists.

The Governor who reminisced on the struggles of some political class for the reign of democracy in the country, noted that the June 12 elections revealed the strength of the nation’s diversity as it betrays the theoretical postulations about ethno religious influence on electoral outcomes in the country.

Drawing lessons from the June, 12 1993 elections, he said; “For me the most striking lessons is that unity of purpose, open mindedness are needed for our country to escape the relentless efforts of some elements to subvert our country’s corporate existence.

“The security challenges that confront us today is a direct threat to the future of our country because of the disunity among Nigeria elite on how to confront what is clearly a threat to their survival.

“Toxic mentoring that glorifies criminality, exacerbating hatred and divide our people should be scrupulously avoided. Nigeria was at such as a precipice in 1993 after the exit of Gen Gbadamosi Babangida but it was at this moment that conscientious leaders came together under the National Democratic Coalition and other various organisations to provide a national direction and a pathway to democracy. The political class elite of the time intentionally involved to curtail the rhetoric of internal issues and to avoid distraction of subverting elements.

“That is why we must all come together both those who are in government and those outside the government to challenge our leaders to do the right things. Confront the issues that divide us, promote the issues that unite us, ensure fairness, ensure equity, and ensure justice in our polity. Even as we fight to end criminality, let us unite all forms of bigotry in order to build a nation where peace and justice shall reign.”

The speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon Funminiyi Afuye in his goodwill messages reflected on the roles that Governor Fayemi and other stakeholders in the June 12 struggle played in the actualization of democracy in the country.

Also, in his welcome address, Hon Wale Osun maintained that the freedom of democracy can only be secured true federalism that does not subjugate any part of its component and give due recognition to the diversity that exist within the nation.

He added that the current constitution lacks the principles to guarantee the kind of democratic freedom that the country deserves.

The panelists; Dare Babarinsa, Hon Lateef Akanle and Mrs Omotunde Fajuyi, who fielded various questions from the moderator identified lack of abundance resources, trust, transparency, accountability, moral ethic, and prevalence of violence as the major cog in the wheel of democratic freedom in the country.

Suggestions offered to achieve democratic freedom by the panelists included; fairness in the sharing of the country’s resources, need to practice the tenets of democracy, need to bring perpetrator of violence to brook, need for youth to embrace knowledge, change of mindset, hard work and revival of moral ethics, among others.
